hunt

I had to park Chief for 3 days. When I went out to feed him on Friday, he was holding his back leg up and his foot was the size of a softball. Vet put him on antibiotics and it was back to normal in a couple of days. Couldn't see anything wrong with it when it was swelled up. After the swelling went down I found a cut on top his foot between his toes. I have hunted him the last two nights. First night he treed 3/4 mile from where I cut him lose on a leaner going into a Den. I never heard him till he was treed . Second drop struck at about 500 yards run a short track and treed on a den. I called it a night. Last night I hunted Chief and Lucky. We treed one Den . We treed on a hemlock that was surrounded by other hemlocks. I couldn't find the coon, But it was impossible to see the top of the tree. Third drop they took a old track and grubbed it up and treed it on the outside. they took the track about a mile. I was able to drive truck and get about 900 hunderard yards from them, just before they got treed. called it a night.

hunt

Hunted Chief and Lucky last night. 1st drop dogs went about 3/4 a mile with out a bark . I drove around and called them in. 2nd drop, Lucky checked back in after going about 900 yards. I put her in the box. I heard chief open Garmin said .73 miles. I jumped in the truck and tried to get closer. After a couple trips around the block the closest I could get was .92 on the Garmin. He was treed and I went to him. He was on a tree covered with grape vines that went from tree to tree. The one he was on was slick. I seen a coon about 20 yards away. Started back to truck and Chief opened on the lead .I cut him lose and he was treed on a double about 300 yards in. Started back to the truck again and he opened on the lead again. I cut him lose and he come treed with out a bark on the ground about 100 yards in. Chief had another Double. I was still along ways from truck so I cut him towards the truck. He hit a track and treed on the other side of the road about 150 yards from the truck, and had a coon. I took lucky home, and took Chief by himself. Chief treed 3 more singles. What started out as a bad night turned into a very good one. temp was around 32 and snow flakes in the air all night. Iam sure glade the snow wasn't sticking to the ground. It was 62 here wed. and warmed the ground up enough to keep the snow off.

Pups are good acting pups and growing good.

Our Deer season opens here tomorrow, and dogs will be parked for first week. Every camp around is full of hunters. The bad part is if run your dog where they Deer hunt they think your going to chase that Big buck away. I try to tell them I see more bucks when I coon hunt than any other time. But it always falls on Deaf ears.

In received a voice message from Keith Southerland last night, of his pup out of Chief and Breeze, treeing her 1st coon last night. She sounded real good! she was chopping every breath I would say she was close to 100 barks a minute. She had a nice high pitch ring. She sure sounded good. Keep her in the timber Keith. it sounds like she will be a good one. Take care Dave

Deer season

Our regular Deer season ends Sun. then we have 9 days of muzzleloader. I always enjoy Deer season. Its a time where I get to spend lots of quality time with family. I miss my boys this year. I have one son in the Army, Station in Afghanistan, My other son is a Police officer. and has been working 50 to 60 hours a week. My oldest son doesn't hunt. My son Brad and I have both killed a descent buck and a couple of doe for the freezer. We are looking forward to the muzzleloader season. Its been cold and snowy here for most of deer season, and not fit to run hounds. For the past few years I have went to GA for a week and hunted the hounds. I always looked forward to get out of the snow. This year I don't think I can go. I have to many things going on in Jan. take care Dave

Winter has arrived. They are calling for 18 more inches of snow here. It will be a good day to chase Deer, and have some fun in the snow.

By the end of today we will be over 3 feet of snow in the last two days. 25 to 35 mile an hour winds. Makes it hard to even Deer hunt.

Chief

Our last two days of Deer season today and tomorrow. snow is knee too waste deep ever where. Looks like its going to be long winter

My Chief pups are doing good, get them out of pen for a while every day to run. Need to get them tied out and use to a chain but weather has been bad. Both seem smart.

Happy Holidays

Thanks Chris, I hope you and your family have a nice holiday also. The word up here is cold and snow. I have been in the woods just about every day from the start of Deer season till the end. We have had snow on the ground the whole time. I have only seen one coon track on the ground. The coon are staying in their dens, and not moving. We did get 2 days when it got in the 50s, and it rained day and night. We lost about 3 foot of snow. between the rain and melting snow we had plenty of water every where. We are going to get above freezing this weekend. I hope to get the hounds out.I plugged in all the lights and collars to charge. I picked up a male that is three. He has a mouth like my old dogs, and is a hard tree dog. Iam hoping that I like him. Its hard to find those kind of mouths anymore. I was hoping to get out to ILL. and hunt with you. Right know everything is on hold. My son Jordan is going to be coming home from Afghanistan, sometime in Jan. We will not know when untill the last minute. The Army keeps things tight for security reasons. Take care, and hope to see you for a hunt sometime soon.
