Our season opens the 25th we wont kill many but still skin everything we shoot hides aren't worth much with Russia and China restrictions.

Opening Night

First set of woods we pulled in way off road on my buddies land, opened the door of the truck and heard a dog treed about 200 yards in. Walked back it was local Bluetick hunter and friend Dave McGinnis had a young dog treed on a hollow beech. Said hello and decided to go up on Wilder road.

Cut dogs they went deep out of hearing tree switch went off picked em up at little over 900 yrds. Had nice boar up a big maple. We knocked it out for the dogs.

Second release dogs ran a nice track came treed it was a den. Dogs had swam beaver pond I was almost all the way across the dam when my right foot went in and got a wet foot, LOL! Had another den then it got real foggy so called it a night. Dogs worked hard in that swamp and beaver dams I never saw Samson so worked up man he and Bluspeck made that valley ring was a beautiful still night!Never saw Samson tree so hard he is comin on just turned 12 mos old. Will hunt him alone tonite.

Tuesday Night Hunt

Bluspeck and his grandson Samson.

First drop dogs struck right away in about 80 yards it was red hot and put a small coon up quick. Second drop dogs went in deeper struck and ran a nice track and treed a nice boar coon which we took. Third drop ended in a den, fourth drop was an old feeder track gosh it wound around through the woods finally treed in an old maple mr coon sat in the top. Got home and dogs fed before the rain...four nights in a row for me and Samson I was bushed LOL!

Holloween hunt

Decided to walk hunt behind the house tonight. First release dogs went deep and came treed on a big hemlock on the steep side of a deep ravine, trees were so tight I couldn't even see the top to shine. Moved a good ways East to get away from the ravine before I cut em again.

Second drop dogs worked a nice track came treed again in a big hemlock on the side of the same ravine but further up and not as steep.

Caught eyes right away up in the top but coon wouldn't look again. Slid on my butt all the way down to the creek walked a ways up the creek looked back and found the coon. When I shot it out it rolled down and splash hit the water. Was a nice dark good sized sow coon, excellent fur quality!

Third drop up in the big hardwoods dogs worked an old feeder track up thru the woods, came to a chopped corn field and took track another 400 yrds came treed on the far side had a real nice boar up a bare ash in the thick tartarian honeysuckle.

Shot it out was a nice big dark boar.

Walked down in the woods and skinned the coon called it a night. I beat the rain it was just started falling as I reached home.

Thanks Doug for sharing those coon hunting tales. I love to hear & see them. Looks like you have an outstanding young prospect coming along. We are still waiting here in Ohio to get out and enjoy the season.

Blue Spike from last night.Made two trees first was a hot race straight back to a big den.Led off that re cast struck and treed this nice 18lb boar.

The nites are fun with this youngster Samson but couldn't leave ole Bluspeck home last nite!!LOL! Not taken many coon just a few biggens to reward the dog and keep my knife from getting rusty! Hope your new prospect does you proud! Be safe Dave!

Has a nice locate then rolls over to a short bawl chop. These hills are ruff.Hope to make it up there sometime,maybe next year.

Good to hear from you, yes still treeing coon with ole Bluspeck he will be 7 in April, have his grandson I'm really enjoying called Smooth Talking Samson doing a nice job for me at 13 mos old.

Hunted Samson Monday night he did a nice job knocked out a coon for him then hunted with my partner Paul in the wind with Bluspeck last night knocked ou a couple for him and Paul's pup Smoke.

11/19/15 Hunt

A little windy but Samson managed to tree one in a den, 3 in an apple tree then hole one in an old culvert that we could see back in several feet.

Lori and David thanks for the kind words!

A lot of people wont hunt during deer season especially a young dog but we hunt while the weather allows us. Been training Paul's 16 mos old Plott male with my 13 mos old Samson here are a few pics from the other night.

It was a long run and they had a nice big boar up on the outside of den tree!

Been keeping Samson in the woods as much as possible. We have been treeing coon right along.

Treed this one next to an old school bus back in the woods someone was using for a deer camp..Samson took time out from treeing to read where it was from - Shawnee Vol Fire Dept.!!Shot the big ole boar out it went THUD on the roof of the bus..didn't skin it as both back legs were infected from bite wounds, looked like a yote mighta got ahold of it.

Biggest coon this year:

Paul, Smoke and Samson and 23 1/2 pounder.

Bluspeck 12/08

Wow we have been blessed with great weather.... last yr at this time we were 3 feet deep in the white stuff. It was a nice still night and 35 degrees, I decided to go for a walk I followed the railroad tracks behind my house about 3/4 mile to the North to reach some big hardwoods where I can always tree my biggest coon. I have been pushing the young Samson pup but tonight I took Bluspeck by himself since the poor guy has been slightly overlooked lately while putting woods time on his grandson!
I cut Blu into the hardwoods he headed East and struck a couple hundred yrds in. I have never ever owned a dog that could flat out drift a track like Bluspeck. That is why he is just not good to train pups with they end up hunting him trying to keep up instead concentrating on the coon track.
Blu drifted back and forth and worked another couple hundred yrds up into the ravines, heard the locates and steady chop. When I got to him he had a real nice sized coon up a maple on the side of the ravine.

At the crack of the rifle the coon came out full of life I had just grazed it's head!

It was a nice sized sow, got her skinned and cut Blu back into the hardwoods.

Bluspeck struck close to 600 yrds above me again, as I walked in his direction I heard the steady tree chop way up in the distance. He had the still night ringing it was awesome to hear him tree so hard on such a clear beautiful night! Got to him and he was treed solid on a leaning tree.

Found the coon it was a really good sized boar coon. The crack of the Ruger brought him down.

It was a real nice furred boar so I got the small scale out of my pocket..24.2 lbs. biggest this year!

Got the coon skinned out and headed home...the Sportdog said home was 1.71 miles not bad at all!
