Health and Hunting

Steve I hope everything works out well for you and your health.
I am hoping our weather gets a little better for hitting the woods more regular soon. I would like to get up to the Ashland hunt in Mid March. I will have some pups coming here within the week so I will be busy with that too. Spring is coming here too but the weather does not know it yet. The sun is getting warmer and the days are getting longer so it is coming.
Take Care,
Scott

I SEE HIS EYES

Took BO to BO's bottom tonight. Cut him down the side of the beaver lake and he had got close to 800yds and I was about to fire up the 4 wheeler and ease his way when he opened. So I settled back down so as not to miss the music of the track and listened to him work it away from the backside of the lake into a stand of big cypress. It was an ole feeder track and he opened about a dozen times or so and had covered about 500yds when he threw 4 quivering bawl locates and settled down to the business of treeing. I listened for about 15 minutes then fired up and headed his way. Rode within 50yds of him and waded the rest of the way. He was on a big cypress surrounded by water but tree was up on a small knoll. Found the coon laying tight on a big limb up high and put him on down to BO. He was a good size boar and I tossed him on back with Bo. Rode on into the swamp a ways and recut him but he didn't want to leave the one on the 4 wheeler. I encouraged him lightly with the buggy whip I keep on the 4 wheeler for certain situations and he went on down the slough and struck pretty quick and moved it down the slough and came across 4 wheeler trail and treed right beside it up a medium size oak. Rode right up to the tree, backed off and found the coon quick. Went in and petted him and loaded him up and backed up to take this picture. He was looking up in the tree right where the coon was at and I swear it looked like he could see him by the way he acted. As we rode off he bawled out twice, letting that ole coon know he would be back. Good Hunting!

That's an intelligent coondog.

Do you have a pedigree to show for Briar? I know Zeb has the same pedigree as Whitegrass Sally (litter mates), but I don't know anything about Dizzy Dot.

MASON and BRIAR

Mason spent the night last night since Paw Paw is getting over the cold and we went tromping to the rock bar out from my deer stand. We made this little walk bridge to get across a finger of the river onto the rock bar he calls " JAKES ISLAND" after the cartoon Jake and the Never Land Pirates. He had his sword with him in case we ran into Caption Hook.

BRIAR

Chris, here is a picture of Briar from this morning. Mason and I always take him tromping with us. His mom is Gr.Nt.Ch. Gr.Ch. PR ' TP's DIZZY DOT. She is straight off
GR.NT.CH. GR.CH. PR RAZOR RIDGE POP A TOP and GR.NT.CH. GR.CH. PR RAZOR RIDGE UNSTABLE MABLE. Her sire is GR.NT.CH. PR NIXONS WOLF CREEK GERONIMO
Briar has some great ones flowing through his veins and I'm liking what I see out of him even though I have not fooled with him yet. But today and couple weeks ago as we had him out and about he stayed busy with his nose on the ground, sniffing logs and up on a couple trees. He didn't come around Mason or me once today wanting to play or be petted. That is a sign he is maturing out of puppy stage into getting ready to start stage. Won't be long and I will see if he will use that big horn of his chasing a coon instead of just telling me he's hungry!
Thanks Darren, yea the moon and cold has been tough but its getting smaller and later coming up and weather is warming up nice with not much chance of rain over the next week or so. Should make for some Good Hunting!

HUNTING in the HILLS

Thanks Scott. I know you are looking forward to spring up your way so you and Ole Creek can get after them again. Also saw you had some fine pups on the way, good luck with raising up the litter. I'm sure it will be a few fine cooners in the bunch. Take Care.

Went out to Amite County tonight and picked up my Dad and went to a place close by where I grew up and tromp the woods many years ago. I called the place, " The Old Roberts Place" . It has an old run down home on the place that was built in the mid 1800's and an old grave yard in the woods with 4 graves in it. I spent many years in my teens and early 20's camping in the old house and hunting all the woods between there and home. Been 20 years since I cut a hound there but my Dad and I cut Ole Bo there tonight from that old house. I figured the coon was probably living under or in the old house and I was right because he struck 80yds after we cut him. My Dad can't get around the best and I had said a small Prayer asking the Lord to let him climb close enough for my Dad to be able to walk to the tree. He heard my Prayer and Answered it. Bo located at 247yds and started blowing the top out. I have been proud of this hound but never more proud of him than tonight for treeing that coon for my Dad to see. We slowly made our way to him and he had him up high in a big water oak and I put him down to BO. We made our way out of the nice dry woods and I took Dad home, drank a couple cups of coffee with him then headed home. My Dad has never been a hunter but his brother was and I hunted with my Uncle a lot back in the day. But none of my folks were ever coon hunters. When he heard I was coming out close to home he said he wanted to go and that surprised me and I was glad to have him along. I had bought a Sunfire Ultra HD light just the other day to have another light for a back up or guest light so he had a good one on his head when he looked at that coon. Was nice to be in some big, open, dry woods instead of these tough swamps. Really was a nice hunt and looking forward to going back out there next week. Good Hunting!

RIVER LIFE

Paw Paw never gets the hammock to himself, always got somebody or some hound wanting in it too! Its all good though. Mason and Briar wore me out yesterday and then the short hunt last night finished me off. Wasn't as well as I thought I was as today I have just laid around and took naps. Didn't have the energy to go for a drop or two with Bo tonight and he made me feel guilty when I fed him by throwing a fit when I walked out of his pen. Will get after them tomorrow night.

I made up for you, Steve. First drop Molly went 600 yards and treed instantly. I thought to myself, "Good, she'll have the coon." She didn't. Gave her a love tap and sent her off and she ended up going two miles! No roads, just thick cover most of the way. After about an hour and half of that, I decided to catch her. She fell treed on a spindly, almost limbless pine when I got within about thirty yards of her. I looked for just a minute, didn't see anything, leashed her and made the long hike home.

Your Briar is a handsome boy: nice deep chest, good head, and fine houndy expression. You need to take him to the show ring.

TREED

Went for a short hunt tonight to BO's Bottom. Took BO and Briar. This was Briars first trip to the woods at night and he did ok. Went with Bo for a couple hundred yards then came back. Bo went over 800yds without a bark and had made his wide swing and was headed back to me when he just felled treed in a cypress swamp. I rode to within a 100yds and went in to him. There was water all around about 4" deep and he was on a big tupelo gum and coon was setting up high looking with both eyes. I left the gun on the 4-wheeler because an easy pop up coon is not what he needs put out to him. Petted him up and came on in as I have to roll early to work tomorrow and have a busy day.

Danny I hate to depress you any more than you might already be about our warm weather but it was 73 degrees when I cut them tonight! Its coming your way, sooner or later! Good Hunting!

Echo dogs

Hey Steve I got me some of that echo stuff up here , I think I forgot to tell you . Her pedigree is on the dogs and puppy page under 15 week old triple pop a top pup TRREDBONES she is loaded with it much the same as Bo is.She acts really good and doesn't want to play much but is always hunting , she cant seem to walk goes everywhere on a run , at 5 months she can run a drag and locate a tree but is not treeing yet but I don't think it is far off.

ECHO DOGS

Scot, I checked out that page and your right, she is loaded with Echo blood! She should make you a good one. From what I seen out of BO and what I'm seeing out of Briar, 7 months old is about when they are ready to start. Briar has been showing signs the last couple weeks but I'm in no rush. Just carrying him along the next few weeks letting him get used to the night and all that goes on. Probably cut a coon lose for him in a few weeks if he don't start on his on and see what happens. They are very smart hounds and want to please and BO was naturally straight. They don't need a lot of discipline as a little goes a long way with BO. He treed one possum and I popped him on the muzzle with my hand and told him NO and he hasn't treed another one. That was 6 months ago. They also will be your best buddy. I like a hound that bonds with me, knows what I want, and smart enough to know when they made me upset not to do it again. I wish you the best with her, Take Care and Good Hunting!

BO

Went to one of my new places to hunt tonight. Its about 2 miles up river from the house and across river from BO;s Bottom that I hunt. It has a spring fed creek that comes under the gravel road and goes almost a mile to the river. I cut Bo down it tonight and he went almost the mile to the river and started swinging back my way in his big loop style. He struck he was still over 700yds in and opened here and there and moved it to my right about a quarter mile then came treed. He was over 1,000yds and I debated riding the gravel road to get closer but decided against it so just struck out to him at a fast pace. That didn't last long as I hit some boggy swamp bottom and it took a while to work my way through it. Finally hit a field and got to cut over 400yds off distance with some easy walking. When I finally got to him he was treed on a big water oak that had a thicket all around it. I stumbled around seemed like 4 ever trying to find a hole up through it to shine the tree and when I found one he was looking at me with both eyes. But he had a lot of vines between me and him and his body was on other side of fork. Spent a lot of time trying to get where I could get a good shot and I never saw him again. Stumbling around I had turned my light out and was looking up and walking trying to see an open hole to the sky and stepped in a dillar hole and down I came. Hit the ground hard and BO went NUTS!! He must have thought that was the fattest dang coon he ever heard hit the ground! If someone would have been with me and unsnapped him at that moment, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here today. Ole Bo would have done me in before he realized I wasn't a giant coon! I got up and found my light that had flew off my head and hollered at Bo to shut up, but of course he didn't. Finally just gave up on getting this one out to him. He really deserved it and so did I after that hike. We came on out and I followed that trail through the field and saw on my garmin it came out to the road just further down than where the 4 wheeler was. We just stayed on it and right before we hit the road we walked by an old old house. It was an old home site from late 1800's or early 1900's. We hit the gravel road and had went about a 100yds when all of a sudden very cold air hit me and chills ran all over my body. Just as that happened BO lunged forward so hard he liked to jerked me down and he had sucked his tail down between his legs and was spinning around like something had come up behind us so I spun too. All this happened in a split second. Nothing was there, nothing. I've never been worried in the dark and don't mind ghost, as long as I see them but I don't like NOTHING sneaking up behind me, living or dead! We went on up the road but Bo kept looking back and so did I! Lol! Poor Ole Bo always walks proud, with his tail up but the rest of the walk to the 4 wheeler he kept it sucked down tight. Whatever it was better stay up in that old house, because if it comes out and Bo trees it I will surely knock it out to him! Good Hunting!!

Spring

Steve,
Send some of that warm weather up this way, we need it. Looks like your getting some hunting in. Your Briar pup should be ready to start pretty soon. I have his full brother here but have not done anything yet with him. It will be at least a month before I will get him going.
Take Care.

COON HUNTING AND STRESS TEST

Went to my Sons last night in Chatawa and took BO and Briar. Getting Briar used to riding in the box. Made one tree that was a layup as Bo just started locating about 300yds in and kept locating and moving around in small area for a couple minutes and finally settled on a huge water oak. We looked and he could have been there but we didn't find him. Briar went great for his 2nd night in the woods and was out to 400yds at one time to the right of BO. Just a little more time and I think I will be hearing him in there with Bo working on a track.

Went this morning and had the stress test done, that took 4 hours before I got out but its over. While on tread mill at the end of the time I looked and my heart rate was 154 and blood pressure was 168 over 112. Don't know if that's good or bad. They did 11 1/2 minutes of pictures before and 8 1/2 after and Doc will look at those and see whats what. He wasn't there as he has the Flu and was home in bed but supposed to look at them this evening and if anything looks horrific they will be calling me, if not next Friday do the Echo Test and let him tell me what he thinks.
I had already had first pictures done and was sitting in a chair waiting to do the treadmill and phone rang and it was Corky so I answered to see what day he was leaving to pick up my new gyp, Stormy. He said I should have her here by this time next week and asked what was I into today. I told him getting a stress test done and he said " Well, I don't know how to say it but you do seem to be in a bad mood all the time, might want to work on that some." I thought for a second and almost laughed because every time Corky has been around me I have been in a good mood. But I know he's right because I know I stay wound up and stressed a lot over things I sometimes shouldn't worry about but that's just who I am. If you tell a Dr. all that they just want to give you pills for your nerves or to chill out and I don't like taking any med I don't have too. I like Corky and will try to better my mood if I could only figure out how. Good Hunting should do it!

Layup coon

Chris I hope you get well soon. That crud is rough stuff will take about a week or so to fully shake it.

Took BO tonight by himself out to where me and my Dad went last week, The Old Roberts Place. Cut BO behind that old house and he went down through the woods, hit the creek and went left 947yds made a U turn and went to the right over 700yds and I started calling him. He hadn't made a bark and was going south which was down wind tonight as it was starting to blow pretty good and I didn't want him to get out of hearing. He made another U turn after I started calling and when he got to 317yds on the Garmin he slammed on the brakes. I knew he had winded a layup as I watched the Garmin as he was circling in a small area but not opening. He did that for about 5 minutes then started locating and fell treed. Went to him and he was on a huge gum tree with a ton of vines going all up into it. I could only shine from one spot as there were privet hedge all around. I final spotted an eye peeking at me but just like the other night could never get where I could see him good and just wasn't going to shoot at the peeping eye in all those vines as I felt if I hit him he would probably hang up. So anther one left to run again. Came on in as the wind was really blowing. It was 39 degrees and supposed to drop into mid 20's tonight. Good Hunting!

BO and TRAMP

This is video of BO and TRAMP II treed in the swamp of BO's Bottom tonight. Mr. Jack came over and we cut them at the head end of the swamp and they started working a cold track right off. They opened every now and then and around 150yds bumped up on a tree but kept going. It was a pleasure listening to those two young hounds unravel that track. When they got in over 400yds they had him up and moving good so we rode 4 wheelers their way to get closer. When we stopped they were treed hard 90yds to our left where Bo had treed the other night so I knew it would be some water. We waded in one or two feet of water most of the way to them. They had him and I put him down but he had some life left but Tramp finished him quick but got a battle scar in return. Coon got the end of his ear bleeding pretty good. We give Bo his time with the coon and I messed with Briar a minute but he's not quite ready yet. We rode up the trail a ways and recut but didn't get a strike so loaded back up and went back to west side beaver lake to recut. Tramps ear was bleeding bad so Mr. Jack held him and I cut Bo up the side of the lake. He didn't go far and by looking at the Garmin I knew he was smelling an old track but not enough for him to open on. After maybe 10 minutes or so he was working in the water of the lake and opened maybe 6 times as he made his way across a corner of the lake. When he came out the other side he located a few times and locked down treeing. I made my way slowly across the water to him and he was on a big bushy water oak with a huge vine going into it. A deer food plot was on other side so I made my way out into it and shined a few minutes and blew squaller a couple times but nothing. Went in and rocked that big vine a few times and went back out and looked and he was looking at me with both eyes in the first big fork. Looked like I had woke him up. Gave Bo some petting and told him good job and we came on home. Very enjoyable hunt with Mr. Jack and a couple of good young hounds. Looking forward to our next adventure of Good Hunting!

PROUD PAW PAW

NASCAR season 2015 is here! This is a picture of January issue of NASCAR ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE. Mason and Paw Paw's picture made the cut in the coverage of Championship Weekend back in November. We were the only fan picture from that race, the rest were of the drivers. Makes me proud to think maybe 30 or 40 years from now on a day when Mason has his on son or grandson he might pull this old magazine out and tell them him and his Paw Paw was at that race.
Race tonight on fox at 7pm as the Sprint Unlimited gets under way and next week its the Daytona 500. I will watch the race tonight then go cut Bell for some Good Hunting.

That should make for some lasting memories for Mason. What more could a young boy ask for than to play with and hunt some fine coondogs and then look at his own picture in a race car magazine?

TIME FOR SOME RACING!

NASCAR is about to kick off their season with the Sprint Unlimited race on FOX. I'm ready to see Jimmie Johnson let her rip and hopefully bring home the win.

Scott, when I'm with Bo I'm usually in a good mood, its the job I think that gets to me some times. I hope we do get the chance to hunt together sometime I would love to see any of your hounds go, especially Creek. Take Care.

Dave, thanks for the compliment on Briar. Bo is a little jealous but he hasn't quit hunting for me, yet! lol! I will be glad to get the last test done Friday and hear what the Doc has to say. Take Care.

Chris, I know little Mason will look back one day and remember, " The Good Ole Days " just like we all do. I'm just proud the Good Lord Blessed me with such a fine, well mannered grand boy and that I get to be a part of his life that he hopefully will remember as the good ole days. The Grand Kids are what make getting old something to look forward to. Them and Bluetick puppies! Take Care.
