I suppose I'll be burnt out about a week after the first litter is born but I'm really looking forward to putting some real nice prospects with some good hunting people and will make a sweet deal for folks who will hunt them and give them the chance the deserve.

I'd bet that you're ready for spring just like the rest of us...eh?

Yes I'm ready for spring, like most people in the north. The fur shed is now empty, the kids and I can't wait to do some spring beaver snaring too. I'll be looking forward to getting out and working the dogs again.

I tried

I would have liked to bring some of that weather back Carl but it didn't quite make it up this far, even though I asked for it.

Here is the way my good friend Mark and his buddies spend a Saturday afternoon...this is a really good video and gives you some idea of the games they play. I've seen this in person but this is the best video I've seen to date of the action that usually takes place...good stuff.

Scott looking at this picture has got me thinking.....

I hunted Yellowstone State Park last night for the first time. I walked 400 yards deep to a tree, not too bad, but with all the trails leading all over the place a rig like you've got would be simply amazing for someone like me who likes to work smarter not harder, but at the same time, that attitude has reslulted in a "winter bulge" and I can use the exercise....

This is my river rig setup. Them dogs and coon have been know to get a mile + without a problem. Pretty easy run for them down the river. With the rig, I just sit up, hit the key and go. We covered 3.5 miles of the river last night.

Fortunately for me last night the 3 miles were all on Edge's pedometer. I was able to drive close to bypass all of his running in circles....

Crazy

You guys are crazy...I like hunting but not in this kind of weather. It's supposed to moderate throughout this week and maybe a few days in a row where it gets above freezing and only in the upper teens and low twenties at night but we'll have to see if it happens or not.

Yank and Moose are kind of crazy too with all these females in heat so I doubt we'd have much of a hunt even if we could get out but...never say never I guess...maybe we'll give it a try one night later this week.

Interestingly enough, putting Val, Leinie and Angel next to Shadow must have worked because she started her heat a couple of days ago. If everything stays on time, she will be mated to Yank by next weekend...that should be a very nice cross, double Rabble Rouser and Rat three times, not to mention Raven, Bomber, Bell, Rusty and many other top reproducing hounds in our breed.

Mating

It should be interesting to see how that young male produces, he sure has a good foundation to work with.

Shadow is at around day 8-9 right now so we'll hopefully have some good news in a few more days, it's a cross I'm looking forward to.

Looking forward to spring.

First night 2010

Hey Carl, she looks like she's getting with the program. I got your PM and it sounds like you had a pretty good night with the young dogs too, that's good, it's nice to be able to get out.

Dave came out last night and we decided to fire up training for 2010. It was a decent night in the mid 20s so he loaded up Moose for his first solo run. Moose will be hunted alone almost exclusively this spring and we'll see if we can get him ready for his first venture into competition hunting. Dave turned him loose a couple of times and he made a good round but didn't hit anything. The last time he cut him, Moose struck and drove a track hard through some nasty stuff, up across a big field and eventually into big timber. He located and came treed about a quarter of the way up the side and sounded real good. When Dave got there, he had the meat and was looking as good as he did last fall. Dave left the coon for next time, so hopefully we'll get a few more trees out of it as we move through the spring and summer.

Here's a few pictures of a real nice young prospect.

Moose is carrying his winter weight but looks good anyway. He's a nice prospect that will make a mark if he keeps moving forward like he has done since 8 months of age. I'm looking forward to his development as much as any dog we've started and I believe he'll make a mark in the not too distant future. He'll turn 2 in the next month or so and should be ready to come into his own over this spring, summer and next fall.

We'll be firing Yank up again soon. He has mated a few females and will take a little time to get back into gear but he'll get his work started pretty quick.

Pictures

Moose is looking real good on the hard wood. The one picture you sent me Tom I named it the Ghost dog with Paws. Did my friend Raven shoot that one. Sounds like he didn't break the old gun out for this hunt. Must be going back to Ravens school for shooters for a refresher course before he packs the old 22 again. Maybe we could add a picture taking class to Raven's school for shooters. I take it that was Moose's paws in that picture you sent me. Could we maybe post that one too? Your Buddy, Dave

Have you ever heard of the headless horseman? I guess there also is the headless redbone treeing a coon or maybe the ghost dog treeing the coon. Who knows? All I know is I have never used such a fancy camera before. I should have taken lessons before I started snapping away.

I wasn't going to post this but I can see there are too many questions left hanging out there...

This is a photo of our new "ghost" dog...

Every new venture takes a little bit of practice...whether shooting coons or shooting pictures...yep...needs a little practice.
