MASONS FIRST HUNT
This is video of BO's tree from last night After we got down to the creek and I could shine my light across on BO a little. Mason had fun looking for that coon and this hunt couldn't have been better for his first. Click on box or X to see video.

Priceless
I can still remember some of my hunts when I was Masons age, he will never forget those hunts even if he never hunts another night. I really like the sound of your new female you can put me on that list too I cant get enough of that bawl mouthed tree style, keep it up buddy It sounds good
COON HUNTING
Scott VH, I'm like you in that about 95% of my hunting is alone but I do enjoy it when I have some good company and Masons first hunt couldn't have worked out better. We would have a great time if we could get those 3 young hounds together for a hunt one night. I hope it works out one day where we can, take care.
Scot Crandall, Thanks and I have you on that list too.

MIGHTY BLUE JAKE
This is MIGHTY BLUE JAKE, Sire to the new gyp Stormy I just bought. There is a story behind this picture I would like to share with yaw that is hard to believe but it is the truth. Not just that he was treed in the middle of the morning and yes he had the coon, much more than that. I had bought Jake from Mr. Frank about a year before this picture was taken but had only hunted him a couple months out of that year. I had him going good and headed in the right direction but he wasn't a finished hound. One night I cut him from the house here on the Bogue Chitto River. He struck upriver from the house and was getting deep when he hushed a little while then started opening again headed west. I knew he had crossed the river into a big chunk of land that was owned by a man that didn't like anyone on his place. He soon was out of hearing so I rode around to Old River Road and stopped and listened from several spots but heard nothing. I never owned a tracker until the first of this year but that is one night I wish I had one. Anyway I rode around all the little county roads that made a huge block around that section of the county all night and never heard Jake again. I even walked into that guys place to where I could see his house which is way off the road but never heard him. I looked for days, listened at night, put out flyers, NOTHING. Days turned into weeks into months, nothing. I finally just gave up and put the word out I was looking to buy another Bluetick hound but non were for sale around here. My son Shane calls me one morning when he was coming out to stay the weekend and ask if it was ok if he brought a friend and I told him sure it was. Then he asked if I still wanted a Bluetick and I asked him who had one for sale? He said there was one that had been getting into his moms and step dads garbage at the end of their drive and they wanted him to haul it off somewhere. They live in Chatawa, 17 miles from me, about half way to Mr. Franks in Kentwood La. I told him, heck no, I didn't want a stray dog and don't bring that mutt out here. Well he did. Shane has a big heart, especially for Blueticks since I had them his whole life, so when he showed up he had this scrawny, mangy looking Bluetick with him. I fussed some and told him he could keep him here a couple days and we would feed him but he needed to find him another home. An hour later that dang hound was bawling and bawling in the pen and I couldn't get him to shut up. He was up on his hind legs winding something and I figured it was a deer so I told Shane to cut him loose. I was secretly hoping when he hit that deer he would leave here and not return. They cut him loose and I went back in the house. 15 minutes later they were running up the steps hollering that the stray had treed a coon!. I said Bull but Shane insisted I come see. When I got to the tree about a 100yds from this house this is the picture I saw and took. He was treed on this dead river birch, with a coon's back plain to see laid up in the hollow top sleeping. He had winded that coon from the pen and zeroed in on it once he was cut loose. I went home got the chainsaw and cut it down. When that tree hit the ground and the coon shot out, that stray grabbed him and finished him quicker than any hound I had ever seen. I just couldn't believe it. That night we cut him from the house and he treed upriver on a big water oak and had another coon that we put down to him. I kept that stray, wormed him up, got him over the mange and had him healthy. Didn't hunt him for about a month while I was getting him healthy. First morning I cut him was right before daylight and he treed downriver on a beech that was a den. As I came into the tree I stopped and watched him for a few minutes and listened to him and it hit me. This sounded and treed like the Jake dog I lost, but it just couldn't be. I hooked him up and flew back to the house and went through all my pictures but didn't have any of him. I hadn't had him long enough before I lost him so I called Mr. Frank and asked him if he had any of him and he said yes so I headed to his house with this stray dog. When he brought out the pictures and I pulled the stray, MIGHTY BLUE JAKE from the box neither one of us could believe it but it was true. The stray that was tearing up their garbage was my JAKE. He had a collar on when he went missing but none when found. Those two coon he treed that first day you could barely hear him as his voice was about gone and his looks were awful so I didn't recognize him by his looks or mouth. But after he got back on his feet and the month he stayed in the pen his voice came back. When I watched and listened to him tree that morning on that beech, it all came back to me. How that hound ended up MIA for all those months and to end up at the end of my Ex Wife's drive for Shane to find, and for him to go against my wishes and bring him out here anyway, and for Jake to wind that coon from the pen and go tree him or I would have never known that my hound had made his way back home. Its like a fairytale story but its the truth and to come in from hunting a few weeks ago and buy a gyp that I hadn't even saw a picture of, sent a friend a text asking if he knew anything about her, after I bought her, and for him to tell me that Stormy was Mr. Franks last hound, FATE. No other explanation needed.

Great story
And a happy ending. Now you have something new to work with out of him.
Had a similar experience when I was a kid (50 yrs. ago). Dad had 2 dogs stolen & had no idea where they went. 2 weeks later a friend that hunted with us called & said Blackie had just walked into his yard. She was skinny as a rail & pads on her feet were sore from running the roads. We always figured she got lose or they took her hunting & she headed for home. Never did find other one, but sure was glad to see her.
Glad to hear about your drs. report & keep stories coming- going to be -10 here in the morning. Take care, Ron.
That's one of the neatest stories I've ever read. Thanks for sharing. That story needs to be in the blue book!
BO AND STORMY
This is video of Stormy and Bo from last night on first tree. Its just for sound, no picture. I went out to the Old Roberts Place in Amite County. It was a heavy, misting rain and I shouldn't have been in it as I still have this crud hanging on but what the heck, had to go. They went a little over 100yds and just started locating down in the creek bottom. It was echoing up from them so I turned on the video as they located trying to zero in on coon they were winding. It took almost a minute but they settled to treeing and I went in to them and they had him. Petted them up and left him to run again and recut them. Made 2 more trees but one was a huge pine and other was a huge oak surrounded by under growth and I couldn't find either coon but feel both were there. Good Hunting! Click on X or black box to hear video.
Thanks Ron. Ole Stormy is 7 and I'm proud to have gotten her as she is out of ole Jake. She has a real good mouth and is a nice hound. I have plans to get one litter out of her and give her a home to live out the rest of her days. Hope it warms up soon for yaw, take care.
Chris, I hope all this Fate with Jake and Stormy is because she is going to whelp me a World Champ! lol! Dream Big or don't dream at all!
gabluedogman, Thanks! After I typed it I thought the same thing, it would make a good story and there is so much more of Jakes life after I owned him that is worth telling. I am going to talk with Wesley Martin and see if they could use the story in next years Bluebook and if so, I will do it. Take Care!

Jake
I went down in the month of February and stayed at Mr. Frank's for 5 days and bred two females to Jake back in the day. Mrs. Barbra could sure cook some good food. Mr. Frank drove clear to Ohio and bought 3 or 4 pups back. I just forget now how many. I sure had a great time with Mr. Frank,Mr. Jack, and Billy. Good luck with your hounds. Dave Woofter
IL MIGHTY BLUE JAKE
Thanks Dave. That was probably this Jake's sire you bred to. He was a Gr. Nt. Ch. Mr. Frank named this one Mighty Blue Jake as well and I bought him as a young hound, lost him, got him back and kept him a while then sold him to a friend of Mr. Franks and then Mr. Ed bought him and took him to Illinois and he was named " IL MIGHTY BLUE JAKE". I don't believe he was bred to anything until he went up there, but I might be wrong. I'm about to put the hunting time on Bell and give Bo a little time off. He was on a good roll so I have been keeping him in the woods but before it gets warm again I want to put several weeks of hard hunting on her and see how she looks. Take Care.

Old Jake
Old Jake is the one I was speaking of. Good luck with your hounds. Dave
Dog Talk
Steve, just give me a call and we'll get togeather and have us a good visit. I'll call a couple more coonhunters and whoever don't show up thats who we'll talk about.lol
Coon Hunting and Coon Hunters
Took BO for a short round last night out to the Old Roberts Place and let Briar tag along too. Bo went about 400yds before he struck and moved a pretty good track to the North, up the creek. Came out of the creek bottom headed east for almost 700 more yards and began making a big loop with him and was headed back to the creek bottom to where he struck him. He was moving him good when he came back into the bottom and threw a few locates and started treeing. But he wasn't really blowing the top out and I felt he should be off a track like that. Got into the tree and he was on a big popular and it was slick. I don't know what the coon did but he missed him. I led him 20 feet and told him to get ahead. He left out, made a circle about 200yds out, came back by me and opened 50yds away a couple times and fell treed 100yds away with the coon. Petted him up and came on home. Briar rambled around some but not ready just yet.
Went to visit Mr. Jack today and we treed a few on the couch and Lazy Boy recliner. It was a cold rainy day and Chris and his son came by and Clayton showed up a little later. It was a good visit just hoping Mr. Jack gets better soon as I could tell that nerve is really paining him. Was going hunting tonight but it hasn't been quit raining long and temps supposed to drop below freezing in a couple hours so figured I better stay off the roads. Might be some patchy ice in places. Good Hunting!

coonhunts
Glad to read about you guys down south going to the woods. Got 4" of snow today & supposed to be -10 to -15 for lows next 2 mornings, so our hunting has stopped. Only good thing is it's almost March, so temps should start getting better soon. Good to see Rain got a good home. Murph will give her the chance to show what she is bred to do & take her to town. Take care, Ron.
JIMMIE JOHNSON FAST!!!
Was shopping on ebay the other day for Mason some Jimmie Johnson stuff and this came up and Mason said he wanted it. I explained it wasn't a t shirt for him, that it was for a dog. He said he wanted it for BO but I told him I wasn't buying no shirt for a dang ole hound. Mason looked at me, well, you Paw Paw's know how those kids can get to ya, so I asked Mason why he wanted BO to have that shirt so dang bad. He give me that grand kid look that melts your heart and opens your wallet all at the same time and said," It will make him JIMMIE JOHNSON FAST!!". lol! He's here for the weekend so when it came in the mail he just had to put it on ole Bo today!

Did it speed ole Bo up some? We need some video of Bo on tree sportin his speedo.
Jimmy Johnson Fast
Yea Steve, I want to see Bo Treed in that too. I don't think I would turn Bo loose with that on him, the way bo goes It probably wouldnt be much of it left by the time he trees, but you could put it on him after he trees for a picture. Just messing with ya Steve. Take care--------Jack
PARTING WAYS
Guys I might put Jimmie shirt in my pocket and let one of yaw put it on him when we get to the tree but I don't think I will try! lol! He is to intense at the tree for me to try and wrestle that on him and I agree with Mr. Jack, if I cut him loose with it on its not going to be much left time he goes through these thickets after ole ring tail! Mason had fun with him this evening with it on so it was worth the 8 bucks.
Took Bo and Bell tonight and as you can see by the picture they struck a pair of coon and went opposite directions. Bell is red collar that says Bell, Bo is green collar that says Briar. The Blue one broke at Winter Classic and I sent it off the other day and Garmin is sending me another free because it was still in warranty. We went over by the Haunted House and when they got to creek 100yds out in front of me they both struck screaming hot. Man they sounded good pouring it on those two coon and Bo's went up first. As I was headed to him about 360yds away I couldn't help but stop and listen to little Bell screaming away and getting farther and farther up into the swamp. When I got to Bo she had came treed and Garmin said 0.62mi away. Bo was on huge den tree but coon was on outside. Figuring it was the sow as it hadn't went near as far as the one Bell ran I left it. Got Bo back to the truck and loaded him up and told him to hush as he could hear Bell and was whining to go to her. As I left the truck headed to her I fully expected to hear him bawling in the box until I got back but he didn't say a thing. I got into her and she had a Big one setting out on the last fork of a leaning water oak. Petted her up and came on out. She had been treed at least an hour and was steady as she goes the whole time. She hasn't been out much in the past couple months as I have put the time in Bo but I'm going to make myself give him a break and tune her up. Wanting to put her in a couple hunts and see how it goes.
Ron, I know its still cold up there where you at but hopefully that's about to change for yaw. We are supposed to be near 80 next week but the rain is coming with the warm. It should get yaws way soon. Take Care and Good Hunting!

When I saw "Briar" on the Garmin image I thought Briar boy had up and treed his first coon. Good news anyway with Bell doing well and Bo getting at it.
We've had snow and ice every other day since Sunday night. Most of it had melted by yesterday, and I thought about going last night. But I decided to stay because it was 28 and kind of windy. I don't have a lay up artist. Ended up sleeting at about 10. Suppose to start raining for five days tonight. Can't last too long though. Should have some good coon huntin nights throughout most of March and April.
warm
Steve,
Hope things are going well. Send a little of that warm weather up North. We could use it as Temps have been below normal all of February. We may get some snow next week but whatever it takes to break this weather pattern I am all for it.
Take Care,
Scott

RAINING TONIGHT
Chris, I wish ole Briar had pulled off and treed one, but not yet! Haven't shown him a coon yet but that's about to change. He turned 7 months old last Sunday so his time is getting near. Mason and I set two live traps yesterday and had two possums this morning. Will try again after all this rain moves out of here. We will show Briar one and see if he shows me he is ready and if not we will wait a month or so and try again. Hope you are having some good hunts, take care.
Scott it was 70 here today but the hard rain has set in. Going to get another hard cold blast by Thursday. Hope yaw start thawing out soon and hope all is good with the pups. Take Care.
We had Mason the weekend and I didn't hunt last night as he wanted to go and was going to cry if I left without him. Most all the woods I hunt are rough hunting and swamps and to much for him to tackle just yet. Down at Shane's the woods are nicer but Shane is back at work offshore so I wouldn't have his help with Mason and the hound. So I sacrificed a night of hunting to hang out with my little buddy and watch a robot movie. I thought about carrying him with me to Amite County where the woods are better but we had been busy all day and I figured he would go to sleep on the way. Plenty more nights to hunt when this rain passes. Good Hunting!
P.S. JIMMIE JOHNSON won the race today! Might not make BO any faster but maybe was good luck for Jimmie! Will put it on Bo again next week and see if Jimmie gets another win!

There was something of a break in the weather--it was only misting so I went out last night. Sent the new gyp and Ann the eight month old female down the closest bottom. They went out 400 yards and circled back without a peep. Moved and tried once more, but it was the same thing. At least we got out. Two more days of rain and then it's supposed to ice again Wednesday. We'll see. Should be winter's last gasp here. Next week I'm hitting it hard with all I have. Wolf is going crazy wanting to get out. I have a feeling he'll be taking off here pretty quick.
CRAZY WEATHER
Chris we have had some rain here to over the past few days. River came up around 5' but is starting to drop back down. I haven't hunted since Friday night. Couple nights it was raining and the other one I was just lazy. Came a rain here right at dark but has quit now but big squall line is west of here so guess I will be lazy tonight too. Work is real slow for the next two months before we kick off some new jobs so I decided to go ahead and get Carpel Tunnel surgery done on my left wrist. I have been putting it off for couple years but it has got bad. Went to DOC yesterday and surgery is set up for next Friday the 13th. I will not be able to hunt for 4 weeks which is a killer but I have to do it now while work is slow. I also have bad arthritis in the joint at base of thumb on same wrist that he said will need surgery soon. That's where pain is the worse and Fridays surgery will not help that at all. He will do steroid injections on it after the surgery and said that will help a while. Man I sure didn't expect to start falling apart at 50 years old but after thinking back to how hard I pushed myself at things all my life I guess its to be expected.
Rode 4 wheeler this evening up through the woods and as usual Briar was loose and running through the woods off to the side when all of a sudden he slammed on the brakes, nose to the ground and lit out opening every 20yds or so. Figuring it was a deer or rabbit I got ahead of him on the trail and cut him off and caught him up. He had about made it to the slough with the bucket feeder I have corn in so maybe it was a late evening coon stirring early but I wasn't taking any chances. That's the first track he has opened on or ran. I knew a few weeks ago he was getting close to starting. So when I get healed up he should really be ready for a little work on the coon trails.
The crazy weather was 85 degrees here today and tomorrows high is 38. That will be first thing in the morning as its supposed to drop during the day with wind chills in the teens and 20's. Back into the mid 60's on Saturday with lots more rain starting on Sunday and all next week. Glad when the weather levels out and I get back to hunting!

GARMIN
I had my DC 50 collar on Bo go out when hunting at the Winter Classic. I called Garmin the first of last week and told them about problem. They give me a number and told me to put it on outside of box that I ship the broke collar back to them and when they got it they would have a new one in the mail to me right away. I got it yesterday and its a brand new one with a blue collar, same color as the old one, and a spare antenna. Didn't cost me but the 5.75 for shipping old collar back as it had only been about 11 months since I had bought the other collar. I was impressed with Garmins service. I see on UKC main board people complaining all the time about them but my experience was great.
Chris this weather will straighten out soon and you and Ole Wolf can get after them. From the way you have described his actions to me I feel he is ready to rock and roll. I get this little surgery behind me I will be after them hard with these Ole Hounds. Sometimes its good for hunter and hound to take a little time off. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Yeah, I like Wolf. He's independent and full of go, but he likes to please too. If he turns out to have a good nose, then he'll be pretty good.
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/tre...ld-wolf-caulder
And here's the pedigree for the female I bought last month that's line bred to Blue Jeans Tramp on the bottom. If you look at the line breeding coefficient, you'll see that she has more of Smokey River Be's Blue Jean than any other dog. That's the original Echo's littermate sister. Jean is Tramp's dam. I'm hoping that mixes well with Maverick, who is Echo and Cheif bred.
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/blu...orld-coonin-lei
WELL BRED
Both of those are bred the best. The Blue gyp you have, Smokey River Crazy Blue Fly that's back in her pedigree came from a sister of the gyp Bonnie that I posted an old picture of a while back. Her Dam was Robs Crazy and her sire was Spanky. Bonnie, Robs Crazy, Glenda II were all from Mr. Frank Erwins Kennel off Mighty Blue Magnum and Mighty Blue Dolly. And yes, bred to Maverick she should have some goodun's ! But I can see it now Chris. When Ole Wolf goes to turning the crank you will kick the Blue dogs to the curb! lol! Just kidding. I really do see Wolf working out for you, just keep him in the woods as much as possible and try to make sure that most his tracks he gets on the next couple months are coons and you will have his mind on the right thing. Couple bucket feeders can help with that but once he trees a couple get him away from the feeders or either cast him from further away or they get to expecting that hot track to be close and will get to where they don't want to hunt out as far as we need them too. Good Luck and post us a picture on here of your hounds anytime you like.
