I would support coming to the hunt with enough advance notice to plan taking off work. Thunder has to get his feet wet sometime...been a few years since I competition hunted...it might test us both...count me in. I'd like to see how he measures up against other good red dogs.

The fact is...northern dogs win all over the south in just about every big hunt held down there. A coon dog is a coon dog wherever you drop it. Look at the winter classic winners...over all dog is from ohio...1st place registered is from ohio/indiana. Look at the world hunt...same story. The truth is, when you are trying to start a hunt like this you need participation and you will have a hard time getting people to drive to the deep south when most of the redbones are not from there.

i feel ya, but you live way outside the main hub of the competition coon hunting world...so you are always going to have a drive to compete. Ever think of taking up golfing?

If we can make a hunt like this happen...it will probably be in the spring....and probably in a central location and by central I mean central to most of the competition world....so you southern boys save a few vacation days and bring your golf club so you have something to do during the day....and we will have a hunt to the finish and crown the best redbone that weekend

I don't know if it is possible but we also use to include a buddy hunt at the Leopard World Hunts for guys who didn't want to compete but just wanted some fellowship...just a thought.

As far as the name, I like "Best Redbone". Now think about this and say it a few times.
If you want to draw a crowd, hold it anywhere people like to hunt, where people dream about hunting. Spring or Fall. I like to enjoy hunting and it seems most others do too.
I bet it could be a UKC event, even an RQE down the road.
Lastly keep it simple like US Days, the meeting takes about 10 minutes and nobody has issues. It's just a hunt once a year. No politics necessary.

fla.redpower: You should hold the "Survivor" hound and hunter
competition down there. I'll look forward to reading about the winners. :-).

That is a good idea as well. I like piling them up on my tailgate (refer to my ad 2011 June issue Coonhound Bloodlines)

I don't think anyone wants the coons radically thinned in their home hunting territory! If one person is going to do most of the work organizing the hunt, its going to be hard to move the hunt around much. If the 22 is the judge, and the best dogs are involved, there's going to be pretty heavy hunting pressure in one area. And some pretty well educated survivors after a couple of years!

Nothing wrong with the idea, Shane. Its a lot of work, but I'm sure people would enjoy it if you could pull it off. I encourage you to try.

Nonetheless, its difficult. You will have to have enough guides and enough hunting territory. You may find a club or two who will help you, but the politics get going as soon as you have to resolve the details. With one person in charge, you can resolve issues quickly, but there will always be someone who would rather complain than pitch in. And tongues will wag if your dog wins your hunt!

The # of hours in a hunt was reduced because the average age of the coon hunter has gone up, and everyone with a job wants to keep it. You are young enough to have no trouble with two rounds per night two nights in a row, but not everyone has the stamina to do that after driving halfway across the country to get to the hunt, so you are testing handlers as well as hounds. Not to say that an old fogey with a good hound can't get a handler...

Would I rather be eaten by an alligator in a warm swamp or pulled under ice by a swift current while my hound whines about the porcupine quills in his face? Why do any of us want to chase hounds through the woods in the dark? The misadventures are half the fun. As long as my dog gets home safe, I don't worry too much.
Maybe there ought to be side prizes for "most musical hound" and "best story" at the clubhouse the next day...

I rarely kill a coon.....and wouldn't want to see anyone else kill one in a competition hunt, especially in the spring when they have kittens....

$KC pro hunts are organized and run off in double rounds over two nights and I was thinking something along those lines. They limit the number of entries to 64 to be able to do that and also have non hunting judges on every cast. The entry fee is $250 and that enables them to pay judges. I was thinking of a hunt similar but with possibly using experienced and honest hunting judges the first round or both rounds the first night and the non hunting judges from there on. Killing coons is out for two reasons....1. Believe it or not, many successful competition hunters rarely ever kill a coon to their dogs....even in kill season, and no club or guide would allow out of state redbone people to come in and decimate their coon population. Majority of the cast if a hunting judge is used will score the trees. $kc rules would probably be used because they are better equipped for an elimination event because dogs are not scratched for off game, cant minus out, and do not require a final score of plus points to determine a cast winner. Whether you get a good guide and tree several coon or a not so good guide and don't tree any coon on the outside....the best dog in the cast would win and advance to the next round....until only one redbone is left standing. 4 rounds hunted back to back is not easy for man or dog....but should a hunt like this be "easy".......?
If the winner is to have credibility....it should be a true test of the partnership between hound and handler in a head to head duel to the finish with no dogs advance stopped by a score from another dog in a different cast. All you have to do is beat 3 other dogs in your cast....4 times in a row and you are crowned the winner! But the competition would be tough if the best dogs get on board with this....so it might sound easier than it is

I like the elimination part of the Hunt, that you have explained, but PKC rules I don't think so, I've never been fond turning a dog lose from a tree that has just been treed, unless u are in thick coons, otherwise your next tree will be a mile and a half away,, for the most part you push them out of the area,jmo

If we could make this happen it would be nice to keep the entry fee at $75 or lower and still offer a nice prize package and some worth while money to at least the final four and possibly further down the line.

Have you never had to turn your dog loose towards other dogs in a ukc hunt?
Ukc rules are not very well equipped for a true elimination event for obvious reasons....scratch for off game, can minus out, must have plus points to win cast, etc.
To compete dogs would need to be ukc registered.
I don't know if there is a way to hold this hunt as a ukc hunt and limit it to only redbones...but that would be great if it was allowed....

No, my best dog is too big around to load in the truck and my young dogs need some alone time to get them ready for hunts later this month.

Sounds like the new K.C. has some good rules. dogs take minus for going back to trees and stationary is only 3 min. They might be someone to talk to about this hunt. I do like the idea and the pkc rules.

I keep forgetting , but down here our coons are on crack, they run, and they run fast, lol up there they waddle, and theres alot more of them,,pkc rules are cool ,,,,in the north
