Had a good hunt with Samson tonight. Walked him right thru a herd of does in an alfalfa field he beelined to the woods, struck and came treed a couple hundred yrds down in.

Opening Night in NY

We had a nice opening night up here in NY - a calm night and comfortable 38 degrees, Paul and I hunted camp Weona in the Wethersfield hills. Made three trees looked at two coon and a long run ended in a den. Shot one nice big dark coon left the other.

Friday Night 10/28/16

Got a late start, hunted my Annie female alone tonight up in the Wyoming hills. Yotes were yapping a bit but a nice still clear night. Made two trees and had a nice coon each time. Annie hasn't had a coon shot out to her in over a year so I let her get fired up and fed her some coons. Boy she goes deep to get under a coon you catch her under the tree! Nice solid little tree dog that can move an old track quick and accurate. She will be bred to a local GRNITCH this spring. She is a five yr old Bluspeck daughter.

***Started weighing all my coon just for fun got ahold of a nice scale. You know how us hunters are always exaggerating our coon weight LOL. The dark coon in Annie's picture weighed 21 1/4 lbs. the lighter coon 17 lbs.

Thursday 11/03/16 Hunt

With the chance of getting soaked partner Paul and I decided to hit a couple corn fields up around Green Bay and Quarry roads. Paul got a call that his 16 yr old grandson had arrowed his very first deer and wanted his Grampa to share in the recovery. So I headed up to Green Bay with Samson told Paul to catch up when he got back. Cut Samson along the cornfield edge where the coon had just riddled the corn we walked a good 800 yrds before Samson struck just a few yrds inside the corn rows and took it into the woods. Worked the track nicely up past the swamp and into the hardwoods headed South towards Wethersfield road. Heard the two nice long locates and Samson had a nice boar up a big bare Ash tree. Since we weren't too close to the main road I cut Samson he struck immediately and really hammered a track Southeast and came treed in a big Poplar tee. Coon #2.
Just then Paul called on his cell I told him I was about to Wethersfield road he drove up to a big soybean field honked and I was only about 500 yrds from his truck!

We loaded Samson and coon up then went around the corner to the Quarry Road. Just parked the trucks and headed to the back woods thru the cut cornfield and cut Samson and Paul's Plott female Marly when the skies opened up. Walked through about 20 deer feeding in the field when Samson struck back in the hardwoods. I was happily surprised he could carry the track so well in the downpour..just like his grandsire Bluspeck could. Ole Bluspeck could make other dogs look stupid in a heavy rain.
Samson located and came treed in a big Norway Spruce and Marly joined him. The ole Spruce was full of grapevines but I caught a glimpse of the coon a couple times and after three shots a large 20 lb sow fell out. We were soaked to the gills and called it a night.

The closest boar coon on the tailgate weighed in at 24 3/4 lbs, the other boar coon weighed 19 1/2 lbs.

Looking good Doug! Man those are some fine coons! We very rarely catch coons that hit 20Lb down here. Enjoy that rain buddy, we have not had a rain in i couldnt tell you how long. It's dry as snuff here and twice as dusty. As always great pictures my friend! 👍👍👍👍👍

Wished we lived closer. I took Samson over to my Mennonite friends house Adam Fox in Penn Yan last night he did a good job coon were really hitting the grape vines.

Great to hear from you my friend hope all is well. We are blessed with a healthy population of coon I just worry with low fur prices they aren't getting trapped or hunted and we had rabies and distemper in the past when populations get so high. We don't plan on taking very many just to drop to the dogs but skin the bigger ones in hope prices come up and that's how we were raised to use what we killed. Having fun with young and old dogs. This big money is in nuisance trapping. I work for the County Environmental Health Department we get calls every week people wanting coon and skunks trapped we have a list of referrals from local permitted nuisance trappers. I hear most of the trappers get $50 to $75 per animal trapped, they have to be licensed through the state and abide by DEC handling and release regulations. I'm looking to retire in 18 mos. when I turn 66 and thinking hard on getting licensed and running a little nuisance business.

Monday 11/07 hunt

Paul brought his young English female Kate and I took Samson up in the Wyoming Hills off Cowie Road, Samson did some nice work, he made 5 trees, we looked at three singles and two solid dens. Shot out two nice boars. I forgot camera and Paul skinned coon in the woods so I didn't get any photos till we got back to the house. Kate got in on a few tracks and treed real good on the last run. Beautiful clear sky with a bright half moon and no wind. Coon were feeding in the grapes.

Hunting

Still kickin up here in upstate Western NY have enjoyed the season and hunting as much as possible. I'm really enjoying the new Crystal Pro light I purchased at English Days I use the red light all the time, but I see from my pictures it leaves a red glow if I forget to switch over to the white light LOL. Also trashed the useless Sportdog tracker and got me a Garmin I never loose signal now!

Since coon hides not worth anything this year I'm trying something different I shot a few nice big prime dark Northern coon and will be shipping them to Moyle and Mink Tannery to have some soft tanned wall hangers, might advertise a few for sale I will let you know how it goes. Getting a nice mink tanned and a silver coon with a white tail done too.

I have a couple litters planned this coming year, one is out of my NITECH GRCH Annie female will be bred to a local GRNITECH will be a lot of Wilcox, Briar Creek and Lightfoot blood. I also purchased an 8 yr old NITECH Sunny female from Paul Cronauer that has produced some nice pups she will be bred also there are people wanting pups off ole Sunny.

I wore the pads off my two yr old Samson dog he is coming good I really enjoy hunting him.

Annie had 5 fat pups Wednesday March 15 during the blizzard. 2 blue females, one red female, one blue male and one red male. All doing well and colored up nice. John Kirby getting a female, Nick and I will make our pics as they grow.
