tuesday hunt

I wasn't going to hunt Tue night. Hips said take a night off. It got to be around 9:30 and I couldn't stand it. I waddled out to the kennel and loaded up Dozer. I only made one drop. Drove back in on a long lane way and cut lose. Dozer went a bout 400 yards west did a big u and came back to the truck. I was sitting on the tailgate. Dozer was hanging around so I put the lead on him walked him 100 yards east and recasted him. As I was sitting their I saw that some one else was coming in. I bilked my light towards them to let them know I was their. They kept coming and passed by me 100 yards away. I decided to move. Dozer was about 375 yards out and hadn't said a word. I called for him, and as soon as I did he give two barks and fell treed. He was only treeing about half throttle. When I got to him he was treed on a small maple. It was slick. I seen a coon sitting up about 25 yards up the creek. I think he tried to lay it up and missed. As I was headed back to the truck I seen that the other hunters lights where headed back toward the road. As I loaded Dozer I seen their truck leaving. I headed for home and called it a night.

hunt

I had to park Dozer for a few days. When I went to hunt him wed. night., His front left foot was swelled up and he couldn't put any weight on it. A trip to the vet on Thur. and he is on road to recovery. I pulled out Chief and a young female to hunt last night. 1st drop. Chief was treed at 600 yards with a coon in 3and a half minutes. That was the good. The bad was the young female Star, was still back where we cut lose. I called but she never came to the tree. I rolled it out to Chief and started back to were the Garmin said the female was. Star was up a creek about 200 yards in the opposite direction so I cut Chief toward her. Chief struck and took a track 600 yards west then hooked to the south 150 yards then back to the east. He come treed 80 yards from where I was standing. Wish it was always that easy. Star was in and out with him and showed some interest on the tree. The tree was a Big Hemlock tied into about 20 other hemlocks. I couldn't get anywhere where I could shine the tree more than a third of the way up it. 3rd drop. Chief struck at 175 yards took a track fast ended up treed at over a half mile away. Like your compass always trust your Garmin. I didn't think he was treed were the Garmin said he was. He sounded like he was way closer. After I walked about 400 yards towards Chief, I called Star, and headed back to the truck. I still didn't think he was were the Garmin said he was. The block I was in is about 2 miles wide and about 2 1/2 miles long. I drove to the north side thinking I would get closer. It put me 1 3/4 miles away. I thought for sure that was the side he was on. I got out of the truck and could her him treed way of to the south. The Garmin was right and I was wrong. I drove back to the south side of the block and then headed west. At one point the Garmin had me over 2 miles away Their is a long dead end seasonal road that runs north and south about in the middle of the block . As I turned down the rd. to the north the distance on the Garmin shrank. When I got to the end of the rd. Chief was only 150 yards from me. It was posted ground so I left Star in the truck along with the gun. I t was one of the worst hell holes I have been in. It took me about 10 minutes just to get to him.Getting out wasn't much better. I was in about 6 inches of water and thorn bushes. Just as I could see the truck Chief give me a pull on the lead and into the water I fell. As I Was trying to get back up I could feel the water running into my boots. I called it a night. Oh by the way the tree was slick.

I think that Josie raised 5 pups 2 went to Mike in Ill. and yours and one other went to SC. and one to Ga. The other one in SC is doing good. Never heard anything about the others.

hunt up date

Have not been on here much. Cross bow season for Deer opened last Sat. Between Trying to Cross Bow hunt, coon hunt, and helping my son move into his new home, I haven't had much time for anything else. 50 mile an hour winds here the last few days put dogs on back burner. I have treed some coon with Chief. Dozer is on his way south. He will probably be another one that I say I should have kept. Deer season opens here with gun in 7 days, and then the snow will be her. Dozer needs to stay in the woods. If he stayed here he would be parked after next week for the winter. Joe continues to be hunted in In. He will be their until the week of the Grand American, at that time I hope to head south to hunt for a week. take care Dave

Female

Sully,
Give me a call when you get a chance. When is she due in? I think it would be best to try to AI her. How did your female out of Chief and Bess turn out? I have had good reports on that cross. take care, Dave

Posted by davemc on 12-29-2015 12:10 PM:

Chief

I will be heading out to pick up Joe and Hoss, either the end of this week or beginning of next week, all depends on the weather. I hope to stop off at never gone and get a draw on Chief one more time, I also have a female that I hope to get bred with the Homebrew blue Dan semen that I have at Never Gone. This female is the loudest I have had on the place in a long time. She goes back to Jeff Stulls Dogs, My old Homer Dogs, RC x Jenny, and Terry tuckers Boomer. You never know how any cross is going to work, But if I was a betting man. I would say this should be a cross that puts out some pups with way above average mouths. take care Dave

I would bet you are right, Pups would be Loud. If all works out and you make that happen keep me on that list for a female, Thanks and Happy New Year!

Steve
I wasn't able to get to Never Gone. I had an appointment for sat. We got about 10 inches of snow on Fri. night. They were calling for 3 to 5 more on sat.am. That turns a 8 hour drive into a 10 hour drive, Then I had another 4 hour to travel for the rest of my trip. Then the same back home. The good thing is the semen isn't going any place. It will be there when it works out to be the right time. Take care Dave

Hoss and Joe

I picked up Joe and Hoss from IN. yesterday. We have a little brake in the weather and I hope to get a chance to hunt them tonight. I took a walk in the woods Wed. We have about 8 inches of snow on the ground. I didn't see any coon tracks, But the warm up should get them moving.

hunt

I didn't get to hunt last night. I forgot about a commitment I made. We are going to get 8 inches to a foot of snow tonight, with 50 mile an hour winds. I really like the looks of Hoss. He has a nice mouth also. I am looking forward to hunting him. Hoss is a litter mate Chris Powell's female. He will be my spring project. take care Dave

Cold and snow here. Winter has been easy compared to most winters we have here. Long range forecast looks good. It is going to get above freezing end of Jan. and beginning of Feb. Looking forward to hunting Joe and Hoss.

hunt

I hunted Joe and Hoss last night. I Drove about 40 miles south to my friends place. We still have snow on the ground, and he doesn't. It makes walking a little easier for me. 1st dump wasn't pretty. We cut Hoss and Joe lose. Joe went 300 yards to the right, and Hoss went about 150 yards to the left. Hoss was working in a froze up swap area, and Joe was in the hard woods. Joe ended up swing around into the swamp, and fell treed. Hoss covered. It was a big oak tree and it was slick. Pat asked if I wanted to move to another spot. I said lets recast them and see if they can make it right. we walked about 20 yards and cut them lose. I was happy to see that neither one attempted to go back to the tree. Joe went about 150 yards along the swamp and hit a tree. Hoss slammed it and both dogs treed hard. It was another slick. We pulled them off and moved to another spot. We cut lose in a corn field that had been picked. Their was a lot of small pieces of corn for coon to feed on. The dogs struck of the lead on a barn burner. they took the track 800 yards south and then started heading west. We drove down the road about 900 yards and listened. The dogs were about 750 yards to the west. We drove the truck to the other side of the block. the garmin said the dogs where .63 miles from where we cut lose. As we drove around the Garmin showed Hoss treed, and then Joe. We got lucky and where able to drive down a dead end road and get with in 400 yards. When we got to the tree they had the meat, and we rolled it out to them. next drop Joe opened at about 150 yards after a few minutes he fell treed and hoss backed him. they treed on a big hemlock and we couldn't find the coon. but it could have been their. We dropped off Hoss, and Pat picked up his female out of Chief and Breeze. His female has a1st and 2nd on her in UKC. He hopes to get the time to finish her out this year. Pat works 2nd shift, and works 6 days a week most the time. We dropped Joe and his female and they both came treed in the bottom of a hollow at about 600 yards. No track and both dogs treed at about the same time. we went to them, they had the coon in a big hollow oak on the out side. we rolled it out to them and called it a night.

Joe,s hunt

I hunted Joe by himself. 1t drop I cut him loose nd he went about 600 yards right handed and then swung to the left another 100 yards and struck. joe took a short track about 150 yards and treed on a Hugh hemlock covered up by 2 more hemlocks. I couldn't get the coon to look, but I felt he had it. I walked about 20 yards from the tree and recasted him. He hit a track at about 80 yards and worked it in a very small area. After about a minute or two he come treed on another hemlock. I could get around all sides to see the tree, but couldn't find the coon. It could have been their, But I felt I should have found it. I walked about 100yards and cut him again. Joe struck at about 200 yards and worked a nice track 470 yards and treed on a big den. I don't know if Joe is going to stay here yet. He has a lot of good qualities. He is a real nice clean tree dog, has a good mouth, and a head full of good sense. He needs to hunt harder and faster for me. He also needs to learn to pick up his head on bad tracks. right now he has more nose than he can handle. Joe has shown improvement each time out, for me and for Ken, when he was hunting him. Tonight he went 700 yards before he struck and did it with the speed I like. Joe also misses to much on bad tracks. The bottom line is I like the dog and if I have the patients too hang with him I think he will make a nice hound.

Hoss hunt

Made 3 drops with Hoss 1st drop I went to one of my honey holes. Hoss struck at 90 yards run a short tack. and treed. The tree was a big den that was split in half. I could see the inside of the whole tree. The holes where empty. I recasted about 50 yards from the tree and he went back. I walked him about 75 yards from the tree and he went back again. This time I got on him a little. I walked 50 yards and cut him again. he headed back towards the truck. He hung around the truck for about a minute, and then went hunting again. Hoss headed back into the woods and struck at about 200 yards. He worked a track about 450 yards before he bogged down in a half frozen Beaver pond, He located two or tree times but never settled on it. I moved to get closer, and when he knew I was coming he sat down on the tree he was marking. It was a leaning tree that went into another tree that was covered by grape vines, with two big dens on each side. the tree was slick. I felt it was a tap and the coon was in one of the dens. 3rd drop Hoss struck at 400 yards from the truck. He hunted out about 250 yards then I moved up a little when the garmin showed him coming back toward me. He turned and started going deeper that's when he got struck. He took a track about 230 yards and treed on a small pine. I found the coon and rolled it out. Hoss turned a year old in Nov. He has treed about 30 coon by himself, and has only been hunted with other dogs a few times. He has a nice mouth and is a good tree dog. Iam looking forward to see how he turns out.
