publishing
I like your ideas for the books. The publishing business is undergoing a revolution as we speak because of digitalization. This has the big publishing houses in a panic, but soon enough they will be out of business (unless they adapt and stop trying to force paper and cardboard).
Took Briar and Stormy to Black Branch Swamp tonight. The forecasters missed it because we only got a few showers Saturday and it was sunny yesterday. They were calling for 3" to 5" more rain over the weekend. So the swamp has drained out some but still some water in a lot of places. First spot I cut them up the Branch with Stormy going straight away from me and Briar slightly left. Stormy struck a bad track and bumped around on it and coming treed 367yds in. Went in to her and she was treed on big water oak and I found the coon after a couple minutes. Petted her up and loaded her on 4-wheeler and started up the swamp. Briar came by me running on up the trail, then slammed on the brakes and started opening going right. I cut Stormy to him and they worked the track on into the swamp and treed on another big oak. Track wasn't that good and Briar didn't tree very well. I hooked them up and came on home.

BO and BRIAR
Took them to the swamp tonight and nothing to brag about. Briar bumped a little trash and BO worked a bad track through the swamp, located several different times but moved on opening here and there. He trailed that coon over 700yds through some bad stuff and had it going good when he came out on the little county road and I caught him up. We came on in. I have got to get some of my feeders filled back up and hunt Briar by himself and get a few more coon tracks under his nose. I believe right now he will hook in behind most anything he strikes. Going to be more like me than BO was, a little on the TRASHY SIDE!! lol!

BELL and BO
Took Bell first and cut her down the ole cypress slough across road from the house. She went out a ways, made a big U turn, went up the slough to where it went under the road, came out on the blacktop and headed down the middle of it headed east. I ran back to 4 wheeler and caught up with her a mile down the road. Took her up in the swamp a quarter mile, cut her up the branch and it was a repeat of the first drop. Caught her up and took her home. Its been well over a month and maybe closer to two months since I hunted her but still I was pretty hot. Can't stand a hound that will run a road or trail. Little ways on a trail is ok but get in the timber and find a coon. Anyway I loaded BO up and headed out again. Took BO to where I took BELL first drop and sent him down the ole cypress slough. He went to 411yds did a hard left turn and blew out of there, went across a field and HE hit the dang blacktop and was headed east. I lit out on the 4 wheeler and met two cars that came by me as I was hauling it up the road watching the Garmin at the same time. I caught up to him and he was coming back to me down the shoulder of the road. He never struck tonight and neither did Bell. Lucky one of them didn't get ran over. I have Never had BO do this. When I first got Bell she did it some but I kept cutting her with BO and she quit running the trails and went pretty much the way I pointed her. Sorry night is all I can say. Guess I have to retrain them after being laid up so long waiting on me to get back going. They better learn it over quick, 2nd time around my patience is very short.

It'll get better
Sounds like you had a rough night Steve, I have those from time to time. I think the lord and these ole hounds will give us those nights sometime just to keep us grounded. usually when I have one of those nights the next time out will be back to norm. Looks like we may get some more rain over the next day or so. I hope all your health problems are doing good. Take care Steve and I'll see you soon.
BO and Briar
Took BO and Briar to BO's Bottom tonight. Been a while since I've gone in there hunting. Cut them loose down the side of the beaver lake. I had brought some feed with me to put in the feeder for Briar to get on a couple more hot tracks. As I was filling the feeder they both struck about the same time. It was a sorry track and they opened every now and then as they made their way around all that water, crossed the beaver dam and hit a bad stretch of swamp. They worked on it a while and covered about 700yds and then lost it around another beaver pond. Briar did the best he could with that track and I was proud to hear the pup out there doing his share. He had done a lot of swimming in that water so I took him home, got some more feed to fill another feeder in Black Branch Swamp and took BO with me. Got in there where I wanted and cut him loose and put the feed in the feeder. He struck 387yds down the branch and started working a good track my way. I cut my light out and waited and it wasn't long and he locked up treed. Went in to him and he was on a medium size maple tree and had the coon . Petted him up and came on home. Little better hunt than the past two nights. Going to start caring Briar by himself first at night for a drop or two near those buckets until he's treeing pretty regular then I will wean him off the bucket coon and see how it goes. Good Hunting!

BO and GIN
Mr. Jack came over tonight and we made a couple rounds. Went to BO's Bottom first and they treed together on the first drop up in a thicket of small saplings. Gin got the tree on Bo on that one. I believe they were winding a coon laid up in there somewhere but we didn't find him. Rode the 4 wheelers around to the Beaver Lake and cut them again. Those frogs were cutting up around that lake. They went in a few hundred yards without a bark and looking at Garmin BO was going to our left out in front of 4 wheelers and Gin was more to the right and starting to work a bad track. In a few minutes Bo just fell treed a few hundred yards in front of us and not long after Gin fell treed to our right a few hundred yards, We went to BO first and he was treed on a cherry that was almost against a big magnolia and went into it at the top. We shined for a bit but it was hard to get to where I could do anything but shine straight up. I feel he was there but we didn't get him to look. Got out of that thicket and back to the 4 wheelers and Gin was still blowing the top out at 513yds from us. We fired them up and headed to her. Got within about 135yds of her and walked the rest of the way. She was treed up a medium size popular that had a beech leaning toward it from the backside that had a couple big limbs against the tree she was on. We looked a while but couldn't get this one to look. I feel that one was there also just so thick and all those trees that came together he could have been in one of the three trees. We left there and rode the few miles to Black Branch Swamp. Rode over half a mile into the swamp and cut them down the branch. They went in close to 300yds without a bark and BO did a wide loop and came back by us on the run headed up the branch. About time I was telling MR. Jack that I couldn't believe they hadn't said anything yet, BO fell treed. Just as he did Gin fell treed the opposite direction a few hundred yards in. BO was maybe 225yds. We rode a little then walked on in. He was treed up a huge turkey pine that looked tall enough to catch shooting stars of any came by. We looked a few minutes and I spotted a Big eye about half way up on the left side. Mr. Jack made his way to my side and when he got there the big coon was looking with both eyes. They were wide apart and looked big as dimes. I petted ole Bo up and we eased on out of there. We got back to where we had heard Gin last and got her rounded up and headed home. That Gin gyp is a very nice hound. Real good mouth that you can hear from a LONG ways as she sounded just as loud to me at 513yds as she did at 150yds. They got cut loose each time together but after they got in there a little ways, she went her way and BO went his. Split tree and stay put. We had a nice hunt and I'm looking forward to our next Adventure of Good Hunting!

GREAT COMPANY
Tonight 3 men that have been coon hunters most all their life with Blue Hounds came for a hunt. Bryan Tate, Mr. Ed Mauney and Mr. Frank Erwin. It was a great pleasure to me to have them come for a hunt in these rough swamps I hunt in. I wish I could say we treed a half dozen and listened to some great dog work but it wasn't to be tonight. Tracks are just hard to come by the past few nights and tonight was no different. I had BO and Bryan had his hound that is about same age as BO. I think he called him Skinner but might be wrong. Bo made one tree on first drop to himself but I feel like he missed. It was a small tree in a thicket with a few big trees around but no coon could be found. Second drop they got in a few hundred yards and got a decent track going and got treed over 400yds in. We rode to within 250 and Bryan and I made our way to them. They were on a big cottonwood with vines going up into it but it was so thick around it that it was impossible to get a light even half way up the tree. We left BO's Bottom and went to Black Branch Swamp. Made one tree in a bad thicket and it was a den. Cut them again but no strike so at about 1am we called it a night. I still had a great time because of the good company I had along. Its not always about how many coon you tree or how great the hounds look but about the time spent with some great hounds men. I sure was proud to see Mr. Frank come out and listen to ole BO go even though he said we kept him up way to late, lol! Great night of hunting with friends regardless of the coon NOT SEEN. Good Hunting!

Hunting Party
Sounds like a good group Steve. Had a nice conversation with Ed down at the Bluetick Reunion in Iowa last weekend.
Hope your getting all healed up and getting back out. You made mention of how loud Gin is of Mr. Jacks, I have two of her half sisters here they are about 10 weeks old and running loose at my place. My wife described them as freakishly loud. I told her that was good. She said not right outside the bedroom window when she is not expecting it. I guess what is music to some is not to others.
Take Care,
Scott

My wife took this picture yesterday evening. MR. Frank Erwin is on the left, Bryan Tate in the center and MR. Ed Mauney on my right. We set around for a couple hours drinking coffee and talking hounds and hunting. Very nice evening on the bank of the Bogue-Chitto River. I'm sure these guys get tired of my questions but I never tire of learning and I'm always picking their brain for all the advice and opinions I can get. Looking forward to the next time we all gather up for a romp in the swamp.

Steve
There is a lot of years in coonhunting and blueticks sitting there on the banks of that river and I will add, Just a group of good guys too. I figure between the four sitting there. They could answer any question anyone might ask about coonhunting or blueticks and for the most part any other breed. Sorry I missed it.
Steve when I went to the BBCHA sectional in Amite, La. There was a guy there that I knew(don't ask me his name) but I knew him and we talked about the new club. I think he was the president. He got up and told everyone there about it and where it was at. Brian Tate will probably know who the guy is. He hunted in the hunt that night.
Man that is a meeting of the minds there. I to enjoyed the hunt me and Mr. Mauney had on his pit stop here. We managed to look at one coon that night. and made 1 that the coon wasn't home. and another that was a maybe.

Thanks Roger, Once he gets to Wendell and gets settled in I would like to make a trip up there and see him go. I will stay in touch, thanks again.
Scott, If they turn out like Gin you will be proud of them. Glad to hear they already sound loud at such a young age, that's a good thing! Take Care and Good Hunting!
MR. Jack, I wished you could have made it too. Notice the cushion in the chair beside me, I saved you a spot. Talk to ya soon.
Myers, Mr. Ed told me yaw had a good hunt and that you had a nice handle on Kink. That's one thing Bo don't have, its like leading a bull out of the woods. We going to work on that though before he jerks me down on some cypress knees. Take Care and Good Hunting!

BRIAR
Took Briar by himself to Black Branch Swamp tonight for a couple drops. On the drive over there I saw several deer a possum, couple of rabbits and a diller so I knew game was moving. First drop he went hunting good without me having to walk any and got struck at 227yds down the branch. He opened good as he moved it on out. The track took him into the Bad Stuff, briars, scrub oak, water, rotten logs everywhere, Thick. He stayed with it and at 463yds bumped up on a tree with 2 big bawl locates but kept going. I fired up the 4 wheeler and rode up the trail trying to stay close so if he treed I could get on in to him quick. When I stopped he was about 220yds from me and I knew he had got in a lot of water by where he was on the Garmin. Track was starting to get away from him and where he was headed it only got worse so I called him in. I hate to call one off track but feel sometimes it is the best thing to do. Next drop he went in about 300yds and came back so I loaded him up and came home. The rain is gone and if their forecast for the next 10 days is accurate, then we have beautiful weather finally. Cool nights and warm days with plenty of sunshine. Perfect weather for fishing and some Good Hunting!

Stormy and Briar
Took them to BO's Bottom and cut them south of the Beaver Lake. They went in over 400yds and Briar struck first and it was a good track. Stormy was to his right some and struck her on coon a minute or so later. Both were working good tracks and Briar got his rolling. I rode up closer and when I shut off the 4 wheeler Briar was screaming every breath about 75yds from me and Stormy opening every 10 seconds or so. Not far from him. She drove her track and ended up in a big hole 10' deep under the bank of a slough. It took a while but I got her to turn around down in there and she came to the light and got out. Just as I hooked her up I heard Briar cut loose with a killer locate then nothing. When I got back to the 4 wheeler he came trotting up. I walked back down to where the Garmin showed he had stopped going before he came back and was hoping he would go crawl up on the tree but he didn't. That's starting to bother me some as he has hit several trees lately and didn't stick. He just turned 9 months and I know I'm expecting a lot out of a pup but we don't get after many hot tracks like he was on tonight and I need him to tree those so I can work with him at the tree. Hopefully he will start sticking soon. Good Hunting!

STORMY, BRIAR, BO
Took Stormy and Briar to BO's Bottom but not a whole lot to talk about. They bumped around on a track and moved it about 500yds and Stormy treed but not solid and after a few minutes left it and moved on. After a while with no action I called them in and headed home and put them up. Loaded BO on the 4 wheeler and off to Black Branch Swamp we went. Drove deep into the swamp and cut him. He went 417yds down the branch, made a loop and came back by me 100yds out headed up the branch. A few minutes later he just fell treed at 674yds. I rode his way and was able to get within 100yds of him. He was on a good size tree and I found the coon pretty quick. He wanted this one bad as its been a while since he had some fur in his mouth but I didn't bring the shooting iron so I petted him up good and came on home. Good Hunting!

Briar Leaving trees
Hey Steve, from what I have read, Briar hasn't always loaded up on a tree and left. It may be that something is causing it. Hunting around all that water, I would take him to the vet and have his ears checked with a scope. Ear infection are very bothersome to dogs, especially when they rock their heads hack. I have seen many young dogs that are not as tough or dedicated to treeing critters pack up and leave. Older dogs will change their tree style but youngsters just quit. Some indicators to look for: dog barks and shakes its head. Dog holding its head tilted slightly to one side or back and forth. When you rub the ears the dog really pushes into your massaging hands for mild cases. Extreme cases doc won't want you rubbing the ear at all.
I'm sure you know most of this. Just thought it may be helpful. Some times I don't see the obvious when I'm training one.

Chris, thanks for the input and you are exactly right about his ears. I noticed a couple weeks ago when he barked in the pen at feeding time or hunting time he would shake his head so I bought some baby wipes and have cleaned them a couple times. He would lean into me as I cleaned them like it felt great. They weren't that dirty and it seemed to help but noticed last night as he barked on the back of 4 wheeler at a house dog as we were riding to our hunting spot he shook his head. I will be headed to the Vet this morning. I got the video of Jazz and she sounds great on the tree. She is going to be a good one. I love to hunt a young, natural tree dog. When they are that young they don't always bust the dark wide open getting gone but I guarantee in one year when you look back on your thread remembering when you wont hardly believe she's the same pup you are hunting now. She's doing great but the best is yet to come, enjoy every night.

MASON, BO, STORMY
Had a nice day today and a good hunt tonight. I put the Jet Boat in the river and we baited a few lines so hope the fish are biting, we will see in the morning. Mason was over and helped Paw Paw with the lines. My neighbor came over with his family and his son, Jase, birthday is tomorrow so I give him a new dog lead as a gift. I boiled up some Crawfish and we set by a fire and got our belly full by dark then headed to BO's Bottom. Beverly brought Mason in the truck to where we go into the woods then I put him on the 4 wheeler with me. I'm not going to ride my little buddy on the blacktop no matter how light the traffic is, to dangerous. We cut BO and Stormy loose by the Beaver Lake and Stormy struck quick and treed. I looked at BO on the Garmin and he came into her but didn't say a word and left on out. I told my neighbor, Scott, that BO must not think she has the coon. We went into her tree and she didn't have the coon, she had a possum. I told her NO and sent her on. I was proud of BO because he has only treed one and to turn a hot quick possum down right after being turned loose and with Stormy trying to talk him into treeing with her. I was impressed. He was soon over 700yds toward the river and Stormy was going around the lake. We rode closer to BO and he was locating but wouldn't settle. After a while he found what he was looking for and locked it down and blew the top out. Stormy had worked her way into him and backed him. We had over a 200yd walk in and Mason did great. It was a big tree and surrounded by a privet hedge jungle and we couldn't shine up the tree anywhere to look for the coon. One spot a little bit but it was looking straight up. Took a couple pictures and the boys, Blain and Jase took some videos. I asked Jase if he brought that birthday present I give him and he said yes. I told him to hook ole Stormy up and try it out, lol! Ole Stormy showed that young man how good she could get through the woods AHEAD of him. I looked back a couple times and he was getting up off the ground. We got back to the 4 wheelers and I told him that I bet that dog lead was the best birthday present he ever got, lol! He just smiled. Him and Stormy will get along just fine. We all had a good hunt and came home a little bit ago. 10 minutes after Mason got his bath that little fellow was sacked out. It was a beautiful night to be out, Big Bright Moon, smell of fresh cut hay in the air, Hoot Owls and Frogs singing their song, and Ole Bo Bawling, " It won't be Long, It won't be Long"

MASON and BO
BO with Mason in the background. Picture from tonight's hunt. That boy loves to go with his young hound Bo and tree those Rascally Coons. We have one in Black Branch Swamp that he named Rocket. After a coon that's in some movie we have seen that packs a gun around. He is a Bad Coon. The first of February Bo had treed one in the swamp up a turkey pine that ended up swinging out from the limb he was on, looked straight down at me then dropped and blew out of there. Bo re treed him in his den over a half mile later. I told Mason that coon left there like a rocket, hence the name, " ROCKET "

FISHING
We didn't catch but one fish this morning so Mason and I went upriver looking for new spots to jab some cane poles in the bank over some fishy spots. He was pointing out a good spot in this picture my wife took.
Chris the Vet couldn't see Briar until Monday but I ordered some of that Ear Solve. They say its good stuff so we will give that a try. He sure didn't have a problem bawling when I left him in the pen last night, lol! He will get it all put together soon.
