Story

I've got a little story for Pastor Mike...I had to spend the day in meetings about 2 hours away from home and when I got home to get caught up with chores, it was already after 7:00 PM. I noticed that Val, Locket and Cuz were missing from the pen and after further investigation, found a fresh hole under the fence...not doubt it took all day to excavate that baby...Val came back just before dark but no Locket and no Cuz so after supper, around 9:00 PM, I took a drive around the section to see if I could spot anything on the roads. I stopped at the top of the hill on the other side of the section to listen to the back side of the hill behind my house and I could hear dogs tracking so I beat it home, put on my light and headed out with the Ranger. I got back in the fields between the ditches...(Mike will know where that is) and I stopped to listen...I could hear two dogs treed hard down by the big oaks above the spring ditch so I headed across the field with the Ranger to get closer. When I got there, it was quiet so I simply said "good girl" and Locket started in again real hard. In about a minute, Cuz came to meet with a smile on his face...and after I wiped it off he beat it back towards Locket and then there was a racket to behold...they were pounding the wood...POUNDING! What a treat...I walked in to find them stretched side-by-side on a big oak and giving it all they had. It was a big, bushy bugger but I caught an eye at least once so I know they had the meat.

There may be more to little Locket than meets the eye...eh? I guess she's trying to let me know that she's ready for the woods and at just coming 7 months, Cuz is putting a good word in for himself too. The only thing Cuz was lacking to be ready for the woods was that his legs had to get longer if he was going to keep up with Moose and Yank...looks like he's ready.

I'm looking forward to the future and hearing about how these dogs made their mark, just like those who came before them.

That's a great story. I had something similar like that a few months back with Bruizer and Luna. They both got loose and I found them in the Village park chasing squirrels with about 10 neighbors looking at me in disgust as I caught them. Glad your story had a better ending!!

Great Stuff

She's letting you know for sure Tom. Probably why she's so intent on getting out of the pen.... It won't take much hunting and the right situations and she'll be rock-n-rolling. We'll get her finished too. If you guys drag her along some, we'll put the finishing touches on her. She's wired and has plenty of energy and not afraid to get in the dark. She's definitely talking to you Tom.

More stories

My younger son Jason told me that Val and Cuz made a break for it on Saturday afternoon also. He said the neighbor called and said that two of our dogs were treed up in the woods behind his house so Jason went over to get them. Val and Cuz had a coon treed in mid day and were doing a bang up job of treeing according to Jason.

We'll be dragging Locket along now and then and I suppose we'll have to take Cuz along too, just to see how well he can hang with the big boys...we'll see.

Cuz is a good looker with good color and long ears and a decent mouth for a youngster. I've got a feeling we'll be hearing a bit more about Cuz in the future.

I talked to the owner of the Dam that Cuz is from and he said that she's coming into heat again and he wants to make the same cross again this summer. He says that the rest of the litter is doing real good, they are coon and tree minded at a very young age and he figures there's no reason it won't work again...and I agree. It's like I said, ol' Rat shows up in that pedigree 3 times in 3 generations along with Rabble Rouser, Raven, Pete and many more real good hounds.

It won't be long before the kit coons are down around here and then we'll have some fun I think.

These new pups out of Yank and Val and Yank and Angel are real nice looking and acting pups. The Moose and Leinie litter is also outstanding and they are developing more character every day. I'll try and get some pictures before they start heading to their new homes.

Look GOOD

They sure look good Dave...that's a real nice pair of young hounds.

I can just about picture those pups in her belly right up on their hind legs...treeing right along with sire and dam...what a picture...eh?

We don't get the chance every day, to put them together right but this cross sure has the makings of something special and I'm looking forward to it.

Bet

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was helping Tom put up a deer stand in the woods this past fall. I believe it was the one that Pastor Mike could have shot the wall mounter out of if he would have waited a couple of minutes. You gave Tom a call about a good hunt that you had Cherry on and I said, "I'll bet you that I can finish Moose before you finish Cherry." I do not think you said anything but a funny giggle. Or did you say something?

Hope to see you this fall in WI.

Pups

I was out cleaning the kennels and vaccinating pups tonight and I almost got stampeded by the wild bunch...X 2. What a pack of hounds...man oh man, who ever signed up for one of these pups is going to get their money's worth for sure. The Angel litter is outstanding in every way and Leinie's pups have blossomed into a real nice bunch of youngsters. I've got mine picked out but I can't remember a more difficult process because every day I see more personality and really interesting characteristics coming out of all of them. What I like best is that I've seen it all before...going back to Rat and Raven and how those pups used to impress me.

There are two pups left from the Val litter and they will be going to their new homes in the next week or so. They are both really good looking and good acting pups and are growing like weeds. They have great personalities and are smart enough to catch on to things with one lesson and that will make for fun training a little further down the road.

Once we get them whittled down to where I can actually aim the camera and get a picture of the pup I was aiming at...I'll get a couple of pictures on here but I think it's going to be fun to track their progress over the next year, just like it was fun to track all the rest that came before them.

Jason was cleaning the kennels this afternoon and he had Angel's litter and the two pups from Val's litter, loose in the yard while he was cleaning. He said that his Rat terrier decided to pay a visit and the whole pack of pups was after her. She headed down the driveway and it was like a full blown fox chase as the whole pack of pups went charging after her...he had to run them down and herd them back to the kennel...not much fear in that bunch...eh?

I thought he would be a Nt Ch by June 6 with Tom handling him. Isn't that the plan? (Nothing like a little pressure ) Now Buck, how much are you willing to put up.

Posted by topdog on 05-23-2010 09:59 PM:

Pups

If Moose is willing to tree a coon...I'm willing to call him honest...who knows...maybe we'll make a Team and get another cast win or two on him in the near future.

I can tell you one thing for sure...Dave has them harder than an oak bark shingle right now...they are in a lot better shape than this old fart...but we'll give it a whirl anyway and who knows where the chips may fall.

I was out doing kennel chores today so I figured now is as good a time as any to start messing with the pups. I had some coon scent on a rag and I had the entire litter out of Moose and Leinie, tearing into it like it was a live coon. I had all I could do to keep them from dragging me and the rag into the weeds...it was a hoot. I turned Angel's litter loose next and it was the same thing, they were wild to get after it. What was most interesting is that they all perked up at the scent on the ground prior to seeing the rag moving, it was easy to see that the scent stirred something in their brains. These are nice pups and I'm looking forward to starting the ones I keep back.

Posted by topdog on 05-28-2010 07:32 PM:

Pups...

The pups from the Leinie and Moose litter are something else...loud, outgoing, no fear and good looking to boot. They are all built like Leinie and look like they will be outstanding athletes. They bark easy and are loud enough to where you can't hardly stand to be around them when they're sounding off so I guess they're going to be something real special to look forward too. I'll get some pictures on here later this afternoon if everything works out....

I'd bet that Leinie would look forward to a scratch behind the ears from you Scott...she's drying up real good and is growing a new coat and looks like a million bucks. It won't be long and she'll be back in the woods.

We're going to take Richard for a short hunt in the hills of Western Wisconsin. We've got a few places that aren't so steep and with a little luck, we'll actually tree a coon at the bottom...while we're actually at the bottom...We're try to keep from having to climb because if they get up too high...I'll be standing on the road listening...no doubt with a smile on my face

Mark Bates and a friend are passing through this afternoon and we're going to try and hook up with them for a short hunt tonight. He's on his way north for some visiting and then back down to Wisconsin for Redbone Days next weekend. It's always good to visit and catch up so we're looking forward to it. It's even supposed to be a halfways decent night to hunt so hopefully we can get one treed and get a few pictures.

Nah. Thanks anyway. LOL Have fun there Richard. The hunting just don't get much better.

Tom,
Leinie will tighten right up. FAST. Don't know if it's possible or not. But wondered if she has the x and y chromosones. I've seen some really nice females, but none that muscle up like she does.
I'll make it up there sooner or later. We'll get things squared away, then do some huntin'.

Pups

OK...it was a battle but I got some pictures of the Moose and Leinie litter. You'll have to do your best to sort them out because it was action packed start to finish and it's impossible to catch any of them while out and about because they're into everything. I've got quite a few here so forgive me....

The calm before the storm...not really, you need to hear the sound track...if I had one...what a racket goes on with these guys.

Funny how they figure out where momma is...gotta check if she's still in there somewhere...

Now the action starts...really...it's a shame I couldn't somehow get the sound effects...it's pretty entertatining...

Can't get a grip...bay 'em..

Da twins...

These guys are snarling and growing and making the darndest noises you can ever imagine. They mean business and once they get hold of this thing...it's hard to get them off.

The rag is part of basic training and contains just a few drops of coon scent...file it away for a later date...eh?

These are outstanding pups and will be the real deal...I don't see any that want to take a back seat...they're all go getters.

I've got a couple picked out but it's tough...if these weren't spoken for...I'd be keeping back 3 or 4 to start for sure...in fact...I guess I'd keep them all back to start if I could...but of course...that would make me crazy...

Last night

Mark and his friend Ryan and Mark's daughter Samantha stopped in yesterday for a visit. We loaded up and hunted last night and our other good friend Don guided us.

We had a good hunt and I got at least a few pictures...
Moose...on the wood...

Boomer and Moose...

Shaker, Boomer and Yank...

It was good to see old Boomer doing it right and with some real intensity. Shaker, Yank and Moose looked real good and they drove this track and treed with the meat...there's a lot more story to this one...I'll share it some day...let's just say that there are a few more new students to the Raven school of marksmanship

These are great pictures considering that Boomer is a Dual Gr. Ch. and Shaker is a Dual Gr. Ch and Yank is a Nite Ch and Moose is working his degrees.

We also had a young dog out of Boomer called Homer along but he was turned alone on a couple of drops earlier and treed a couple and did a nice job.

It was a long night but well worth it...I really enjoyed visiting with these folks and look forward to seeing and visiting with them more next weekend at Redbone Days.
