need rain and a cool down

I haven't been hunting much. Very hot and sticky here. It is also very dry We need rain bad. We got a couple of small showers. It was just enough to settle the dust. We need a couple of days of a good steady rain.

I hunted Patches one night this last week and Joe one night. Made a couple of trees with both dogs. Neither dog looked to good. They had to work hard to come up with a tree.

hunt

Hunted Joe. Joe made 2 trees Both off cornfield chases. Seen 1st coon couldn't find second one. He treed in the woods about 100 yards in. I could only see up the tree about 15 feet. He did a nice job on both tracks.

hunt

Treed two with Patches and Joe. Joe treed 1st on both trees and Patches covered. Patches led the way in a corn field chase on the 1st one. When they got in the timber Joe took the lead and treed 1st. On the 2nd one Joe barked twice and fell treed, Patches trailed in and covered. Both dogs where shoulder to shoulder trying to out do each other on the tree. They sure sounded good.

Chief x Jewell Toe nailed in

Dave,
After I get back from the zones we gotta hit the timber some night. This is the pup you hunted with in the spring that didn't do much. He averages 110-120bpm on the wood. He struck and treed ahead of my Grand Night Male two nights ago. That coon must've been on the ground feeding in a apple orchard. He was still climbing when I got to them. Would have been a good one to give to him. He was 130+ and belly tight

This is last nights hunt. Went up a hemlock, couldn't get him to look.

hunt

I have not been on computer much lately. Been hunting some, But haven't hit it hard yet. That is about to change. weather has cooled down, and I have finished most my projects that need to be done before winter. Coon seem to be moving early. Making most my trees early. Once that moon comes out tracks seam to go away, and dogs are falling treed with out a track. It wont be long before we get our first frost.

I haven't had dogs out in a while. I took a hard fall on one of my replaced hips, and had to stay off it. Doctor said everything looks good, and give me the ok to hunt. Kill Season starts in 8 days. I have 5 broke dogs, and 2 started dogs to hunt. I am going to farm two out for kill season. But still have too many to hunt myself. I might sell one of my males. I will decide this week if I want to sell one.

hunt

I hunted Chubbs and patches last night. I usually only hunt one dog at a time, But I wanted to get some fur out on both dogs. 1st drop. I cut dogs to the west. Both dogs broke on the run. Chubbs went south west, and Patches went North west. Both dogs hunted out 900+ yards and did a big horseshoe and joined up on a creek, and took it to the east. They went .6 miles and Chubbs fell treed, Patches backed him. I was able to drive 150 yards from them. they where treed in a small pine with the coon about 15 feet up. I rolled it out to them. It was a big 20 lb plus bore. 2nd drop Dogs struck a good track and run it almost 600 yards and treed. I was able to drive down the road 75 yards from them. They had the coon, but a didn't want to shoot that close to the rd. 3rd drop I went home and used the side by side to hunt off. Patches struck than Chubbs, at 790 yards. It was a older track that took them another 800 yards before they warmed it up in a big Beaver swamp. Patches treed, and Chubbs covered. I was able to drive the wheeler 200 yards from them. The tree was a big ash covered with grape vines, with leafed trees around it. I couldn't find the coon, but it was impossible to see most of the tree. As I was leading dogs out they both opened on the lead, so I cut them lose. Patches opened twice. Chubbs went 150 yards back toward the wheeler a threw a big locate and treed 50 yards from the wheeler. Patches covered. It took a while to find the coon. 9 shots later it was on the ground. I called it a night. Patches is out of GR. Nite Ch. Gauge and Nite Ch. Alice. Chubbs is out of Gr Nite Ch Thorn and Gr. Nite Ch. Rose. It will be back to one on one tonight.

Sounds like your night was a little more action packed than mine.

Crack drove a track 600+ yards in a horseshoe shape, what I would like to believe was a coon. He ended his screaming track on a 20ft tree. He either fell off on a coon, or he was hot on his tail. Either way he was smoking it. I had strong doubts at first looking at this thin leafed tree. But just before pulling him off, I got way back in the field and took another look. Sure enough he had a set of eyes looking back at me. I emptied the clip and never touched the coon. So today after work I'm going to see what happened to the scope on paper.

hunt

I hunted Chubbs last night. 1st drop chubbs struck a track at 150 yards. It wasn't much of a track. He opened about 3 times He worked a small area for about 5 minutes, and treed on a big cherry tree with a hole in it. 2nd drop Chubbs was out for about 15 minutes be fore he opened. He went left handed into a hard woods, then back to the right into a corn field. Chubbs struck the track at the end of the corn field. He took the track about 300 yards, and treed on a Big oak next to a big Maple covered with leafs. The oak tree had a hole about 3 feet up from the bottom of the tree. I spent about 15 minutes trying to find the coon. The coon could have been inside, or on the out side. The tree had a lot of spots for him to hide. 3rd drop. I cut lose along a creek. He followed the creek 900 + yards. When he was almost to the next road I hoped on the side by side, and drove to the next road. I pulled up to the bridge and waited for him to hit the road. He must have heard the wheeler pull up. He came to the wheeler and jumped into the front seat next to me. I told him nice try. But you ride in the box not the front seat. I put him in the box and called it a early night. Snow flakes were in the air, and the ground is white this am. Patches turn tonight.

I didn't hunt last night it was very windy and we had a light rain that turned into freezing rain then snow. I woke up six times to see if weather had changed any, only to hear the wind howling. When I got up this am. my wife said I cant believe you didn't go hunting last night, its your sons 22nd birthday. The story behind this is that 22 wears ago my good friend from Tnn. William Underwood was spending a week at my home to hunt with me. For 5 years in a row William came up the 1st week of our kill season stayed at the house with me and my family. We hunted from dark to daylight every night. 22 years ago my wife was due to have a baby that week. I asked her if she wanted me to cancel that week of hunting with William. She said no we would work something out. 22 years ago we didn't have cell phones, so my wife came up with the plan that she would turn the front porch light on if she came in labor. This was our 3rd child and my wife said she would know when it was time. William and I hunted close to my home, and after every drop we would drive by the house to check to see if the front porch light was on. We hunted 5 nights and everything was working great. On the 6th night we decided to only hunt for a short time. So we went a little farther from the house. At 10:30 as we pulled up to the driveway the front porch light was on. I went into the house and found a smiley note that said I had my friend Lorie take me to the hospital. Call as soon as you see my note. I called the hospital. they put Jackie on the phone and she told me to get their as soon as possible. She also told me to make sure I take a Shower 1st, But don't dilly dally. One hour after I arrived at the hospital she had our son Jordan. Iam very blessed to have the family that I have. It is hard to believe that was 22 years ago.

Fridays hunt

I hunted Patches by herself . 1st drop I cut her she went about 150 yards and started checking trees. She broke to the east into a cut corn field. She started back down the laneway that I had just drove up with the wheeler. When the Garmin hit 500 yards I started to her on the wheeler. when I got even with her, she had gone about 900 yards east, and another 200 yards North. I shut off the wheeler to listen. she was chopping ever breath. I knew it was junk. I shocked her twice and she stopped barking, But continued to run. she was heading west. I drove the wheeler until I was about 200 yards in front of her and headed north toward her along a ditch line. It worked great out popped the deer into the open field with Patches about 100 yards behind. This time she got the full treatment. I hit her on high with a 5 count 3 times. She ran as fast as she could back to the wheeler. I put her back in the box and we went back to the same spot and started over. When I cut her she was a little reluctant to go, so I walked with her for about 75 yards until she took off. Patches opened 2 or 3 times at about 400 yards and the Garmin showed that she checked 6 or 7 trees. after about 10 minutes I went to her and we moved to a different spot. Next drop Patches struck at about 400 yards and took a good track 560 yards in a horseshoe and treed on a small tree covered with grape vines that went into a big den tree. She did a nice job. She is a very classy tree dog. Next drop she opened twice at 475 yards went quiet for about 5 minutes then came treed about 50 yards from where she opened. I let her tee for 5 or 6 minutes then walked in to her. She was treed on a small tree that went up about 10 feet and did a 45 into another den tree. We headed back to the wheeler and called it a night.

hunt

last night. It was my grandsons birthday party in the early evening. then my wife and I went to the movies. I made one drop with Patches when I got home. She struck at 300 yards. and took a hot track 220 yards and had the coon. I rolled it out and we headed home. Patches is your typical young hound that looks good on good tracks, But struggle's on the older ones. Age and hunting should take care of that, along with a little fur in her mouth. She is a very good tree dog, But seams to want to have a coon when she trees. She is a little slow to get on the wood, But that's all right with me. I cant stand one that trees empties' all night.

hunt

I hunted Patches again by her self. 1st drop she struck at 550 yards and took the track into one of the worse hell holes I have been in for along time. I usually hunt this spot from the east to the west. I never get all the way to the west side. I started west to east this time and it was all multiflora thorn bushes. I tried 3 times to get in to patches. After the 3rd attempt, I hit the tone button and called her out. I toned twice and she didn't respond, so I tapped her with the collar on number one with the nick button. As soon as I did I watched the yards go from 500 to 250 in short order. At 250 she changed direction and started to go out again. As soon as she hit 270 yards I toned her again and she was back to clicking the yardage off. She was at my feet in about 3 minutes. 2nd drop The ground was already covered with a heavy frost. Patches struck at 475 yards and took a track another 450 yards, and give a killer locate rolled it over to a every breath chop. Patches was treed on a big maple with a coon on the out side. I rolled it out to her and let her chew on it for a couple of minutes before we headed back to the wheeler. 3rd drop patches struck at 650 yards . She took the track into a beaver swamp. After awhile she wasn't saying much on the track, so I eased in to see what she was doing. She was swimming around from one clump of marsh to the next. I watched her for a few minutes, then hit the tone button and called her in. She swam right to me. I hooked up the lead headed back to the wheeler and called it a night.

update

Nite ch Riely's and Ivans Blue Fancy arrived yesterday. This is a nice female that Riely Floyed and I own together. I purcheced my half from Ivan York. She is out of Ivan's Gr. nite ch. ugly Duck male. and a female out of Iron Will. Ivan sold me his half back in Aug. Ivan kept her till after the PKC world hunt. I would like to thank Ivan for selling me her, as well as hunting her in the PKC world hunt. She won her cast the 1st round and lost her cast in the 2nd round. I think she has won around 900 dollars in PKC. Iam looking forward to hunting her the rest of NY kill season. She will be Bred to Chief as soon as she comes in. The hauler also took a couple out of my kennel. Joe is headed to KS and Chubbs is headed to GA. And today another hauler will be taking Patches to IN. I have 3 more started females that I have been working with. All three are at 1 year old. I will give Fancy a couple of days to get use to me. then its off to the timber.
