Typical Cartel Hunt

Jason and I got together for a hunt tonight. Treed a hot one right to start....about a 200 yard track, nice boar coon. Went across the road and cut loose, struck a good track, dogs went down towards a house and all the sudden a lady started yelling at the dogs. Jason went over to talk to her since it was her nephews land and the lady stood in her house robe and proceeded to tell Jason she had four cats that she was feeding and one 3 legged cripple coon so when Jason told her we were coon hunting she got mad and stormed in the house. So we left there and dropped again and struck and ran a good track that ended in a hemlock tree. We moved up the hollow and cut and struck a cold track and they worked and worked and ended up slick....we sent them on and ended up treeing a possum. Finally when we got to the truck...we got stuck in the mud and had to roll out a whole round bale of hay to get out. Just a typical cartel hunt....alot of fun.

Maybe that is why Mike sold her. I hope that they don't have any possums in Cedar Grove.

I just wish Danny Barrett would have been with us last night. He would have been in there drinking coffee with the ticked off, robed lady and Mike and I could have finished hunting that spot.
When he says stuck, I mean stuck. Could not go forward and would no go backwards, just sideways. Must say, I was impressed with our ability to think in a tight spot and come up with a plan. The pallets didn't work, but the hay was the ticket.

I am glad to see/hear that two of our members are out getting their dogs ready for Southern Days. We used to have a leader named Buck Ratliff but I guess that he has resigned. Has anyone seen or heard from him? Pastor Mike, it looks like you are going to have to take over the reins of the Va Cartel. I guess that I am going to have to give Carlos a phone call since he isn't replying on the board. BB must still be out hog/bear hunting.

Well I have been busy. Been playing with some bear dog puppies on a hog and been trying to get Beamer ready to go. I have a Moose x Autumn female that is starting. What a mouth, I cant wait to hear her lock down on a tree. Made a den and treed a coon last night.

I did 3 drops with Walter Addy and Bull last night first drop they come up treed we had a pack of coyotes come in and run the dogs off the tree rite out into the field we cut loose from they arent a big fan of coyotes I guess that is the second time it happened this year. Second drop they worked a cold track Bull located and treed Addy and Walter treed but never set in with a locate they were unsure but the coon was there at the top of a big pine . Third drop Walter struck the track and all 3 chimed in and slammed this one in a big hollow maple never got to see that coon but Im sure he was in the tree. Bull looked real good last night
Gonna get back out tonight it snowed today and its suppose to be chilly tonight we will see what they can do.

I think Mike was out and about in the mountains last night. Shannon and I made a few drops. We started off with a good track and tree with at least 2 coons in a big white pine. Did not knock one out at that spot. Went across the road and made a drop but no track. Made a third drop, did a little training and made another tree in a big pine. Could not get this one to look.

I found the Buckster. He said that he "has had a lot going on". He doesn't know if he can make it to SRD or not. I guess that we will have to go without our fearless leader. I don't think that he is as fearless now that he is getting older. I/we treed a possum on the first drop, treed in a log jam on the second drop, ran a deer but pulled off and treed a coon on the third drop.

I only did two drops last night didnt get a peep out of the dogs either time they hunted hard Nothing was moving in the fresh snow

Had bull and Addy out last night cut loose on a small brook surrounded by old apple orchards slammed one up in about 5 min I praised the dogs went up the brook 100 yds sent them again they struck went about 400 yds treed on a den praised them went another 100 yds or so from the tree sent them back in toward the brook they hit the brook struck and treed fast not much of a track but they had the coon in a small hemlock. I should have called it quits but I just had to try for one more well bull strikes and heads over a hill out of hearing Addy strikes and heads out another direction Bull was headed towards the rd so we went to him he went about 1.5 miles and ended at a rock pile on the river bank. Now I look at the gps and last time I had addy on the gps she was 2 miles from where I was. I went grabbed my car drove to the other end of the woods by my parents house and she is treed across from there house on a big hollow maple. I started at 6 left the woods at 11:30 it was a good night and we found alot of coon. I took some video I will post later.

My Southern Redbone Days prospect list just got narrowed down. The female that I was going to hunt just started bleeding. She was doing so good too. That takes her and Boone out of contention. I went out to check on Wilma and she has ballooned up to basketball size so she is out also. Oh well, back to the drawing board (or back yard).

Dont feel bad Richard my co-pilot/handler backed out last minute so Im only not gonna be able to hunt both dogs now its time to decide which one Im gonna hunt they have both been doing good but Addys quicker at finding a track and striking than bull not much but some so I think I will hunt her. Then Ill be bringing one to show.I was gonna show my little moonlight female she was doing great on the bench and leading but I took her out last night and she put a thorn apple thorn clean through her foot shes pretty lame I hope shes is back to normal by then. If not Hazel does well on the bench just not for me LOL If Im holding her lead she just wants to go go go

Trip was limping something terrible a couple of years ago but Linkous still won BOS with him. I found out that he had Blasto and he died just a week after we got back home.

Getting treed first with a coon is the name of the game down at SRD, not getting struck first.

There pretty close on the getting to the tree first but I think I can call Bull faster on a tree sometimes Addy will hold back on locking down on a colder track. I just havent had Addy in a hunt yet and I want to maybe Ill save her for the B&T sectional here in April. Ill probably decide which to hunt the day I leave. Gonna get out tonight then its gonna be -15 degrees here this weekend so I wont be able to get out Sat or Sun night. gonna have a porch covered in Redbones this weekend LOL

So Ill probably bring the moonlight bred dog then maybe Ill put her in the treeing contest to for something to do she starting to spit em out pretty good wont win but she is LOUD and I just like to here it.

I take 2-3 dogs to a hunt a lot of times and don't decide which one to hunt until right before the deadline. When I go pleasure hunting, I don't know which dogs that I will take until I pull out of my driveway. If I go up to them and they aren't barking and jumping around wanting to go, then I just move on to the next one and load him/her up.

Lambert, I should know about a handler for Copper this weekend. It will have to be one of the boys. The other one we talked about has to work and will not be there.
You may have to handle her. See if Jared can mail me her card this week.
