You old tight wad you can’t take that old cankered money with ya. Lol. Bad thing is folks is asking them prices for common dogs. Have driven hundreds of miles to only be disappointed after the first cut. Then u hear well he ain’t never done that before.

Guess the only way I am goin to get Bob down here is to tell him I have the real deal here for half price.

Thanks

She had her holes like all of them. You have had better dogs than I have. I just got lucky to own her. She taught me more about coon Hunting than anything. I guess we just too hard to please. I can remember u and a few more tell me to enjoy her because you don’t have many come along like that. Guess u were right. Anyway I will shut up I am too lazy and sorry to do it again. Land that once was big timber is gone and we’re there is big timber it’s posted guess I am making excuses for not having a young one that I like. Bob find us two of em. Heck I will even buy yours if u find one in 30 days but has to be the real deal. Perry and Bob approved. That’s how sure I am u ain’t goin to find one.

Perry and Bob

Alright you two outlaws, you’ve both stated reasons why why you are looking to buy one vs. trying to train one. Keeping the theme of this post in mind, what needs to change in the blue dog world in order to have several decent young prospects to choose from for a baby stakes contender? Not talking about that once in a lifetime hound, just one you can compete with and have a real chance at getting in the money. Talk to me

We need to raise dogs that leave and hunt hard, know how to work a track. and stay treed no matter what and have there coon when you get there. If you have a dog that trees coons you might not win them all but you will win your share. if I was guarantied one coon per cast I could win most of the cast I enter where I live.

Vic

Mickey is right same goes around here but when u get to some areas that have a lot of coon u better have one that is looking to tree another. Here is were a lot of folks in the Bluedog world doesn’t like what I am about to describe. You have to have a dog that has his own way of treeing coon. Not stopping and listening for a dog to open on track or tree and breaking its neck to get there. And from what I have seen that’s the majority of blue dogs. Before u get all mad at me I don’t condemn anyone that likes that style of dog but it is just not what wins for me. I here folks say I want one to be with dogs but be first to tree and strike. Well if they winning a lot with that dog they are pitching him a awful lot of the time because u are not always goin to get first tree at the top level of competition. I don’t mind mine with a dog right out of the truck but after that they better be doin their own thing. With or with out hitch hikers. Alright Vic Most blue dog folks want pack dogs because they don’t want to Have to walk in three different directions to dogs treed. They are pleasure hunters nothing wrong with that. I get that and they want honest strike dogs. I don’t care if mine opens on a field rat as long as it changes over on to a coon when it crosses its track. This dog I am describing is hard to find born that way independent. Yea there is some man made dogs. Don’t want that either but the biggest problem I see is we are a dying sport not many Hunting anymore. So that leaves u less folks with culls that I like not being a smart tail but most consider the loner as a inferior dog. Vic I don’t have the answer but something has to change. When everyone is breeding their gyp to ole so and so and not getting better dogs we need to look at what is goin on.

DOGS

I like one to be deep and alone myself. They are hard to find and when one has that independence bred in them very few people will hunt one alone to bring that independence to the surface. I hunt a young dog right by itself once it can tree a coon alone. Let them hone those coon treeing skills. If you don't hunt a dog alone , then how do you even know what you have? I have seen those blow down tree dogs not tree so hard alone. I've seen those first tree dogs not look so sharp when they have to do all the work to get to that tree. Those hard going, kick dirt in your face dogs don't spin them tires when cut right by themselves. How many will go hunting with a dog whining in the dog box? How can you evaluate breeding stock if you hunt every night with your buddies dog.No one around me that still coonhunts will hunt a dog right by itself. I don't mind hunting by myself at all but I am lucky that my son hunts with me a lot. I don't have that young prospect ready to be hunted alone yet but may be getting close. Does that mean he will be a coondog? NO but I will know what he can and can't do in the woods. Just my country boy opinion and its not worth much!! Darren

Amen and Perry me and you can hunt the same dog. I don't want a hitch hiker I want a leader. I don't mind him treeing with another dog but they better be backing him. I know its not always going work this way but it better most of the time.

Vic

Micky pretty much covered what I’m looking for but I sure don’t know how we get there. I can’t totally agree with all the talk about how the right crosses aren’t being made. I been at this a long time and I know for a fact that many many many of the best have been bred to the best over the years. Yeah I’m sure there where lots of great opportunities missed also but that’s going to always happen. I think one of our big problems is simply we don’t have enough of the top owners and handlers in the country interested enough in pushing the blue dogs in the big hunts. We have some that are very dedicated and win quite a bit but we fail greatly in numbers when compared. For example I myself believe back in my hay day had a dog or two that could compete with the best but I was content to grand them out win a few blue hunts and start on another. I qualified a few but never even went to zones or whatever and I’m sure there were many like me. Now I have the money handlers and desire and don’t have the dog power to try. One more thing about the dog I want and micky touched on this. I first and foremost want a straight honest cooner that suits me pleasure hunting. If I find what I want he will win his or her share in the hunts

I have enjoyed reading all the post and appreciate all the opinions! If u make or find one of these type hounds luck still has to be on your side: keeping it healthy, not getting ran over, & etc.... I got pretty close to what I am lookin for except two big issues. (1) low end strike dog ever time, but to his defense he is always the opposite direction. (2) That dad gum tick disease, but almost have it under control with medication. I guess what I am starting to think is even if you do find the right hound it is almost like the stars and the moon all have to line up, lol. Thanks for listening to my rants!!!

Posted by recon on 05-03-2018 02:17 PM:

Just finding a dog that will go hunt alone and tree a coon is near impossible anymore. I don't care how good one is with other dogs, if they won't hunt alone, I won't own them.

Guys

Mickey it takes.a honest man to say what u just said.about judge and reproducing. If we had more in the blue world that would take blinders off and see it might be different. I ain’t no breeder and wins don’t reproduce wins. Sally the same way. Yea there was pups that treed coon but not that extra in it. As Rance Winn used to say didn’t have a that ump or extra in it Jeff you exactly right. I hunt one dog and one dog only. Has to go hunting and better not come back Most wont get out of your light without help. Bob u right I never had the money to push one until now. I didn’t have it when I had Sally or she would have had a lot more wins. Now that I can afford to I don’t have the blue power. You take stone with tyree handling he is the right kind and has money behind him to make it possible. Elliot knows what wins and has more than one but just one in a blue skin. His stone dogs gets to his self. Just read the play by plays they don’t lie

Jeremy it’s like a needle in a hay stack. Rare to find it and I guarantee u won’t find it in here cause if it that good somebody knows about it and it never gets on the net. Jmo

Winners

Smokey river hemi was a winner but she was not a loner i owned her for about a yr and a half and sold her to bobby fairchild and ryan crowson because i knew i couldnt afford to haul her like i knew they could. I wanted her to prove what she could do and she did. When she placed 2nd in $kc world she had just left my house. She was a wild crazy bitch that barked everytime her heart pumped but she had a heart of gold she had bad nites and could look like a idiot at times. I can guarantee u 99% of bluetick guys wouldnt own her and push her to her limits. I hunted that bitch to death and couldnt wear her out i tried. I finished her to grand easy and won a little $kc money with her. She was never pushed in ukc zones and i regret not giving it a shot because i feel she could make a hard push at it. Most that hunted with her hated her and thats ok cause i did too but i knew what she possessed and that was strike power get some of yours and all of hers 😁

I think Perry has given us a start!

Number 1) Identify/find people who will hunt a blue dog alone

Number 2) Check in with these folks you have found who hunt their blue dog alone on a regular basis, & be ready to take advantage of an opportunity to own one.

Number 3) Ties in directly with #2, planning & groundwork with $$ people (like Elliot), or multiple folks going in together with $$ to have a purchase plan set to go into action should a young blue dog become known of that hunts good on its own & shows some decent coon treeing ability.

All that rambling just for the possibility of getting one bought. Then there needs to be a plan for hunting through the week & on weekends .... a whole different can of worms

all this reading of what you guys are looking for, you need to go haul a bitch up and breed her to Jake appels Jet dog. He is putting exactly what is described in his pups!!

Trey if I remember right hemi should have won the world that year. She was a wild crazy bitch. You sold her before I could tell you I wanted her. Joe Gramlich was telling me about her. Crowson did a good job with her. Not many ever breathed a breath of air that had her stamina no doubt she would have been hard to handle in any cast. Ukc Pkc Akc Chkc u name it.

Very good point, & one that has been lingering in my mind as of late.
The Stone Dog, the Silver Creek Rock dog, & their litter-mates are living proof of this. I'm sure there are more from other litters I'm not aware of as well. Jake & Joel let their dogs do the talking, never seen them blowing their own horn about their hounds.

perry your right joe was the one that told me about her too and i bought her sight unseen she was one of the best buys i ever made and would do it all over again. I still hunt 4-5 nites a week although since the reunion i have slacked off a little but fixin to get fired back up. Hemi should have won from what ive heard but for a bluedog to win it they are gonna have to do it in dominating fashion because the panel on that last cast prefers a different breed to win imo

A piece of information from our Redbone friends

From the Redbone Breeds forum, the measuring stick thread. This quote is directly from a Redbone owner who recently just competed in the $KC Spring SS. They’re having a very similar conversation on that thread

No BS honest statement, and one of many interesting responses on that thread.

In my opinion, Start earlier by themselves, be deaf (natural independence), hunt harder, be faster. Most of the Redbones I’ve hunted have tools to tree a coon, most have decent noses and the smarts. They tend to not have the natural “want to” at a young enough age to do it alone. The guys I have talked said that some of these off breeds are treeing Coons alone and hunting by themselves at 6 to 10 months old. The 18 month old Walker female I own half of was hunting and treeing Coons alone at 9 months old. The 17 months old female redbone I have currently is comparable in treeing Coons to the walker, except the confidence to stick trees that tracks are not as good on. The walker was sticking trees at 9 months old and the Redbone wanted to “make sure” before she settled in and sometimes didn’t. I would say starting wise the walker really started at least 3 to 4 months earlier than the tebobwThese females have been hunting together a lot since a young age but the walker is definetly more confident when it comes to staying and being treed by herself when conditions are not good. The walker has always had a little more natural independence and the “want to” to learn faster. Like I say this is just my opinion but it’s just the stuff I have seen the last 3 to 4 years. I think with the right combination of lines/dogs we can acheive some of this. [/QUOTE]
