UKC HUNT

We had a dead cast tonight. Hunted with a couple of nice guys in some nice woods but couldn't come up with a coon. First couple trees their Redtick and Walker fell treed and Bo located on first one but didn't stick and we didn't find their coon so they recut to BO trailing and their two fell treed again and BO came in to them and backed them but no coon seen. I was disappointed with BO at this point as half the hunt was over and was waiting on him to quit packing and me tooing and do his thing. Third cut he did. Their two fell treed again followed by Bo a little later but he was 50yds deeper. They had two hounds that would flat blow the top out but BO wasn't budging and he was doing his share of blowing the top out. We didn't find their coon and I really thought at this point that this was our break and we would find BO's coon and start some winning, didn't happen. He was on a huge gum that went into an even bigger Beach loaded with limbs and leaves. I walked myself to death around those trees blowing that dang squaller but couldn't get him to look. So, Time Out and moved to recut. There was 23 minutes and 15 seconds left. We cut them near a road that had no traffic. BO struck on other side of road on the creek for first strike followed by the Red Tick. Good track and Bo started rolling it going right up the road just inside the woods. The Red Tick grabbed a tree and was called but he kept going with Bo so he took minus. In a couple minutes they broke down a few seconds and I was thinking this is it, either the coon crossed the road or climbed. Red Tick grabbed a tree and Bo backed him so I treed him, still nothing from the Walker. One minute left on tree and Walker opened on the OTHER SIDE of the road from BO and Red then he treed. Bo and Red were on a persimmon that went into a big gum and I thought, uh oh, they pulled up to quick and the Walker has the coon. We looked and didn't find a coon on either tree on either side of the blacktop road. Circled them up but I feel they pulled up short because of that road and the steep embankment and silt fence at the toe of the road bed. We saw SPIDER EYES that would make your heart jump with hope that it was a coon but it wasn't. Had a good time and look forward to the Slam hunt tonight. Bo will start doing his thing more and more as he gets used to these hunts and I feel we will get our share. Until then we just donating to a good cause, lol! Good Hunting!!!

Chris, yes he is off Boomer and Dual Grand Hugger 11. She is Stormy sister and they are littermates to the Home Brew Dan dog in that pedigree above. The litter Stormy is from out of my old Jake dog there was 6 pups, 3 made Gr. Nt. and another had 4 wins toward Grand as a two year old but was ran over and killed. So 3 Gr. Nt. and 3 Nt. Ch. out of those 6 pups. I will post a little video of Bam Bam bawling at me from the pen, he is going to be loud. I hate to say this and he not make a coon hound but I like his actions and attitude better than BO's or Briars when they were 3 months old too. Of course I'm not showing him a coon for months but I feel if you showed him one right now he would try to get it. He just has that swagger and attitude I love to see in a pup. February can't get here quick enough. That's when I plan on flipping his switch and seeing how bright he can shine.

Bojangles

Sounds like you had a good hunt Steve. The coons just were not cooperating. I know what kind of hound Bo is. Just keep turning him loose and he will win his share. Good luck tomorrow night.

Good luck tonight, Steve. Just a matter of time until Bo settles down and starts doing his thing.

Sounds like Bam Bam has some breeding. Boomer is a great reproducer, and Bam Bam's dam comes from some winners too. I know what you mean about that feeling. I have a Blue English female pup now that I'd bet a truck would get on a coon and try to tree if I let her, but I'm not willing to risk anything while she's real young.

Good luck with your new pup and the litter Steve. Hope they make some nice ones. It has cooled down here pretty nice and I hope some of that gets down that way. Hunted last night in low 50 degree weather and it sure was nice.
Take Care,
Scott

PUPS and BRIAR UPDATE

Stormy lost one this morning so down to 10. They all look good and feed a while and sleep a lot and not much whining at all so I think they are getting full. Stormy is eating great and all is well with her. I have 5 males and 5 females so about as balanced a litter as you could ask for.

Thanks MR. Jack, Chris and Scott, Bo and I will give it another go tonight.

Got a Briar update from Troy this morning. He said some boys came by for a hunt so he took Briar out to see what he would do. He said Briar worked up a bad track and treed with the meat while one dog was off split treed and another was still trailing. Said he looked good. Maybe I should have left BO and be hauling Briar to town instead, lol! I have seen enough out of Briar to know he has the potential to be more than just an average coon hound so hoping he keeps making progress at Troy's and if he gets to where he needs to be Troy can have some fun with him in the hunts next spring.

Slam Hunt

Another dead cast. First cut Bo split treed 50yds to left of two male Walkers and the Walker gyp covered BO. Found a suspicious form in both trees that looked like the side of a coon looking straight up but leaves and limbs so thick and bad we couldn't positively say it was coon so circled them up and moved on. 2nd drop they hadn't been gone a minute when some 4 wheelers pulled up out by our trucks. We were hunting a 7,000 acre chunk of company land that had little gravel roads on it, all private. Well the 4 wheelers turned around and left and Judge looked at his Garmin and his hound was following the 4 wheelers home. BO was about 400 yards deep at that time going down a creek looking for a coon and Judge wanted to call time out to get his hound and we all agreed. You guessed it, 2 minutes after the time out was called BO treed and I went to get him. Coming into the tree I blew the squaller at the huge oak he was on and 2 sets of eyes looked at me. Big coon in the very top and a young one lower down. I hooked him up and came on out. We cut again down a 4 wheeler trail toward a feeder the guide put us on. They struck hot and BO got first strike. They swung left into the 12 year old planted pines that hadn't been thinned. They were all 4 screaming on that track but two of the Walkers were a bit deeper and swung back right as BO and a male Walker stayed left. The Walker with BO came treed but BO didn't but track had just broke down so I knew he had climbed. The other two hounds were gone, I'm talking WAY gone still burning up something. Bo started locating in there over and over like he was winding the coon but wouldn't settle on the tree so I didn't tree him. Time up on tree we headed in and BO came into tree treeing as we did so I handled him. We looked and looked but no coon found so Judge minused us even though all the trees were in rows and all touching. I have seen this situation get circled every other time this happened but I also felt they weren't under the coon but he was up in there somewhere. Judge is like a Cop that pulls you over for speeding, up to him if you get a ticket or get away with one and up to the Judge if you get minused or get away with it. I have no problem with the call as long as next time if his hound is in that situation he gives him the same minus we got. I feel the minus is deserved because I don't believe that a coon is going to go up a young pine then cross out on several and get far enough away from where they are treeing to not be found. Possible but not likely. Their two hounds were almost out of hearing running something so we recut our two hounds. Just go back and read the pine tree story again because this is what happened, AGAIN. But BO was split a few trees over but I didn't tree him again because he just didn't sound right and wouldn't settle until we came in. Minus again and I withdrew. Had Enough. We have work to do, BO and I. Hunt ended a few minutes later and they called their two RUNNING HOUNDS out and we turned in another sorry looking score card at the club. BO is going to break the bank if he don't straighten out, my wallet can't keep taking this without a return every now and then. He will have a few nights off as I will have to stay near job on Monday and Tuesday but on Wednesday we will practice some more.

Pups all look good this morning and are getting a little bigger. A couple are real hunkers. Stormy is doing great and eating really good and full of milk so got my fingers crossed the 10 make it.

Competition Hunts

Steve,
Sounds like you are frustrated. It goes with the territory. Believe it or not I have a little apprehension about putting Jazz in the hunts because I don't want to deal with the nonsense. I have found that there is really only one way to compete. Go by the rules all the way around. I have tried being a " good sport" and give dogs and handlers the benefit of the doubt, but rarely is that benefit returned. It is much less stressful to just call it right down the line for your dog and everyone else's dog in the cast. I have found that sportsmanship is for times like catching a seniors dog for them during a time out, finding other people's coons if I can, etc. but when it comes to scores and judgement calls I call it according to the rules or how I truly see it.
In the case of the time out, that may have seemed like the sportsman type thing to do. However, it was not witching the rules to justify a time out. No roads, no danger, not moving moving to find new ground. It was a situation that was not good for the judge or to his dogs advantage. I bet if his dog would have located and locked down while you were discussing, he would have changed his tune.
I have guided, judged, spectated or hunted (just a couple) of some of the biggest hunts where a truck was on the line. They are run by the book, right down the line, in a way that is respectful and there are no problems.
Know the rules and insist they be followed for you and everyone on the cast.
Just my opinion.

RULES

Mason and I did what we like best about our hounds today and that's just tromping around with Bam Bam. We walked the cypress slough and Hooks Island as Mason calls one of our rock bars. Bam Bam found out that not all the river starts out shallow and gradually gets deeper as he stepped off into a deep whirlpool spot and got sucked down. Thought for a second I was going to have to get wet, boots and all but he popped up and swam out of it. No Fear, I like him.

Chris and Chris, I was thinking same thing when he said he wanted to call time out, no danger just round up your hound quick and recast back where we had turned them loose BUT, I know how I love and worry about BO and even though I wouldn't have requested a time out I would sure have been going to get my dog, with or without permission. What happened at Fall Roundup came to my mind. Dogs trailing, BO in the corn the other hounds trailing different coon on far end of field. Coyotes went to yipping came into the corn and got after BO. We had parked on the shoulder of a BUSY Blacktop road and when they got after him he headed to the truck like shot out of a cannon. Judge asked if I wanted a timeout and I told him NO, if their hounds treed their coon while I was getting BO away from danger then they couldn't score it. Didn't matter to me if I got scratched but I was running to get my dog before he got hit on the highway. The whole time running I was getting sicker in my stomach picturing BO dead on the road. BO came running back to me before I made it to the truck and jumped up on me and I dropped to the ground hugging my hound. The other hounds did tree but missed the coon and we continued hunting, no harm done. I could have requested a timeout but it could have cost someone a win and he could have scratched me for handling my hound but he didn't so I feel we BOTH handled that situation correctly. But if BO would quit letting strange hounds influence the way he works then he had plenty time to tree more coons and win a cast. I hunt so much by myself and he's not around any other hound unless MR. Jack hunts with me or MR. B. H. then its only one hound. Hoping the more hunts I hit that the strange hounds will be old news to BO and he will do his thing. Time will tell.

BO X STORMY PUPS

All 10 are looking good as of this morning. There are 7 that are spoke for so that leaves one male and two females available. And all that depends on the ones spoke for don't change their mind as I know that happens. Price on pups will be 200. They will be paid up certified SS PKC and perm. Performance with UKC. All you have to do is get papers in your name. I have spent 1,017 bucks on paper work for this litter. 200 to performance BO with UKC and 170 to register litter and pay them up. PKC to register BO and Stormy and DNA was 130 plus 200 to SS litter, 25 bucks per pup to pay them up plus 6 bucks per pup to register. Then I have the feed, worming's and shots. I feel at 200 per pup I can break even and keep a pup for myself and that's the reason I bred her to begin with. Someone wanting a well bred pup, paid up in both registries with just as good a chance to make a World Champ as any litter out there should get you one of these cheap pups. I will be delivering one to Indiana the last weekend of October and if you want one and can meet me along the route I will deliver it for FREE.

BO

Thanks Tommy, I know what it feels like to be pup poor, I stay that way but we enjoy them.

Took BO to BO's bottom and he trailed one a long ways and then treed at over 700yds but kept throwing locates. When I finally got in there I saw why. He was down in a deep ravine with pools of spring water here and there but banks straight up for almost 20'. Lot of hills run off their rain water down this ravine and over the years it has gouged it out deep and steep. I liked to never found a way to get down to him and when I did he was treed on a small dead log that had fell off the top into the ravine. The coon had climbed out but BO hung up not being able to find a way up. I was disappointed that he didn't go further and find a way up. Hooked him up and made my way through the thickets and briars back to the 4 wheeler and rode and made a drop near the beaver lake. He went over 400 before striking, opened a dozen times and fell treed. Drove around and he was treeing on a small trees loaded with vines that went into a big oak and the coon was in the oak. Left him to run another day, to easy of a coon and if he wants fur in his mouth he should have found a way out of that gully and treed that rambling coon.

PUPPY PEN

I had the Concrete Finishers come out today and we poured 7 yards under my kennel houses. Two of the runs will be pup pen and this is where Stormy will finish raising pups to weaning age after they leave the building they are in now in a couple weeks. The other 4 runs will be for the other hounds, they can come under here in the summer and I believe it will be cooler for them. I will build each one a small wood deck for them to lay on under there because a lot of hounds won't lay on concrete. I will wreck forms tomorrow and start putting up the horse panels so it will be ready for pups.

Coonhound Condo

Steve you come as close to having a Coonhound Condo as I have ever seen. Every time I bring Tramp or one my other dogs over there to hunt and they see how your dogs are living, my dogs want to go on strike on me for better living conditions. Steve after me saying this I will probably have some trash problems. You know how it goes if you say a dog wont do something, he's fixing to make a believer out of you, but its been a long time since I have had any trash problems out of these dogs and we all know that anytime you have to start breaking a dog off trash you are going to set him back in his training. It's nice when they don't give you problems with trash. I guess they will get the UKC world started this weekend, would have sure like to have went, but it just didn't work out this year. Are you going to try to make the Fall Round-up. I don't know wheather or not I'll get to go or not. The trip to Kansas next week may knock me out of it, we'll see. How is Briar doing, do you have any more updates on him.

Posted by steve bankston on 09-18-2015 02:04 AM:

ROUNDUP

Thanks MR. Jack, I always wanted to have a nice Kennel and I'm proud of it but it don't make them a bit better in the woods when it comes to treeing coons and that's the only way one is going to stay checked in around here.
I wish you could have made the Zone hunts and got on to the final 100 and had a shot at the world. Tramp or Sheba are fine enough hounds as any out there and if it all came together you might have hung the moon with one of them. I won't be making the Roundup as I have to much on my plate, getting these pups up to weaning age then a trip to Indiana to hunt with Chris a few nights until he runs me off because I know I will be in coon heaven up there. Then we have the NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP RACES the weekend before Thanksgiving in Miami and first weekend of December the Battle of the Breeds in Oklahoma and I will also pick up Briar while there and bring him home for the winter. He might go back to Troy in the spring and run some hunts if he's ready but we will have to wait and see. Troy only sent the one update and I told him when I left I wouldn't bother him every other day as we all know you can't wave a magic wand and make a Coonhound overnight so I'm giving him the time he needs to make a difference in ole Briar's life. That little rain we all got helped for a week but its bad dry and hot again so I feel until Troy gets some more rain and cooler weather there probably isn't a lot to brag about on Briar but its coming, he's got it all its just a matter of putting it all together. Have a great time on your Kansas trip and when it cools down some we will get together and tree a few.

Round-up

Thank you Steve for the kind words on the hounds. It does sound like you have a full plate coming up. When you get up there tell Chris I said hello, and I hope you guys have some great hunts and with a pair of hounds like Bo and Jazz
I know you will. I know that Briar has a lot of good stuff in him and I am sure that Troy knows those dogs and what makes them tic and briar will be the dog that you know he can be when you get him back. Take care Steve and be careful on your trips and we'll get togeather soon and tree a couple.
