Hunt

Paul and Daryl,
Weather hit a high of 50 today and melted almost all the snow. With deer season in full swing and the recent freeze on haven't hunted Samson in a week. Loaded him up early in hopes of beating the projected rain coming, I headed up to one of the highest points near me we call Jenkins Hill. Parked near the radio tower back in off the road on the access drive. Collared Samson up and started walking towards the distant woods along a locust hedgerow when he struck on the leash not 30 feet from the truck. I cut him and he lined it up down the hedgerow just a singing! It was a good 250 yrds. to the woods, he took the track the full length of the hedgerow and down into the woods a couple hundred yards further down into the large Norway spruces, located three times and come treed.

We have treed several nice big coon in this area over the years they sure do like to go up those big spruce trees where it is thick and hard to find them. I shined and squalled and walked around trying to get eyes with my red light but just couldn't get the coon to look. I finally using my white light scanned the tree and saw a dark spot in the thick upper branches.

I fired and heard that familiar thunk, then he looked and got him with a head shot, out he came a nice big boar with a great hide.

Wanted to weigh him so decided not to skin him in the woods.
Hung him up in a sugar maple to get on the way out and headed further down into the valley woods. I spooked a flock of Turkeys and had them flying out over my head in all directions. Samson ran a nice track and put one in a big brush pile made up from tops when they had done some logging. Moved farther North, Samson exploded on the creek and was really moving when he caught a second coon on the ground. First time he has ever caught one. It was another boar coon, he couldn't kill it (he is not a kill dog)but every time the coon tried to climb he grabbed it and pulled it down so I finished it for him. The wind was picking up so decided to make the climb up out of the valley back to the truck. Grabbed my big coon on the way up and took this pic on the tailgate. Samson didn't want to quit but headed home to weigh my coon.

The small boar weighed 14 3/4 lbs and the big boy tipped the scales just a hair under 24 lbs.

Fun night and it looks like there is going to be a few more above freezing.

Had a smooth talking Sammy dog out of a top gun litter mate. Merlyn was a natural. Did a few drags for him and let him loose. Didn't have a dog to run him with. Made a few mistakes but was tracking and treeing on his own. He was getting to be quite accurate also. Lost him almost a year ago. Not really sure what happened. Merlyn was also a varmint hound. Killed rabbits and groundhogs if they got in his area. He went off his feed made a vet appointment but he died before we could get there. Whatever it was took only a day and a half to kill him. No sign of bloat or anything like that. My son got a bluetick now from Dan downing. But he is hunting a walker dog we bought as a pup trainer.

I think I'm gonna breed storm to insane jive look him up breed almost the same as train. I like the idea of an x breed pup myself when lady comes in heat I'll let you know if your interested you can take her and breed her I think you will be happy with what you get I know she will be well taken care of. You and Paul keep up the good work breeding quality females.

A friendship was born (Brianna & Paul)

"The memory of my first encounter with sammy"

Brianna and I tagged along with a guy to a English sectional and anticipated a victory with a dog Called Rage. Paul the kind hearted soul that he is, asked my daughter about the up coming event. Brianna said she was there to watch a good dog run "Rage". Paul kept his composure and when the evening was over Brianna indeed got to see a good Hound run. "Sammy cleaned his clock" After walking many many miles and treeing many many coon with Sammy and Paul. Sammy is the best hound by far that I've had the pleasure to hunt with. A man could only hope to experience the bond that was formed with this hound. Paul and Daryl sorry for your loss
