BO

Took BO to Black Branch Swamp, although its not a swamp right now, its bone dry. Cut him loose and he got 233yds quick opened one time and slammed the tree with this coon in the top. Quick pop up. I petted him up and left the coon to run again. I was thinking that as fast as that happened we would tree a few more but it didn't happen. We moved to the cypress slough across road from the house and I cut him down it. He went 889yds down the west side, crossed the beaver dam and came back up the east side to within 230yds of me then went back down the slough but further east than he came up it, hit a side drain and turned due east for almost a thousand yards as he worked his way up this spring fed drain. I caught him up as he came to the little county road where the water goes through the culverts. Not a bark, not one. All those fine woods and didn't hit a track. Made one more drop at Haunted House Bottom and the same thing, nothing. We have a chance of rain on Monday as another cool front comes through and I sure hope we get it. BO don't look so hot in this drought we having. Supposed to be 95 on Saturday and 96 on Sunday then we cool back down. Crazy Weather.

Indiana Trip and Mr. Jack

After reading the posts above, I just wanted to extend the invitation for you to bring Mr. Jack along Steve. I have plenty of hunting in flat corn field country so that would eliminate the need for the quads. Being that we will be hunting on the weekend, the hill country will be full of deer hunters and camps. Too much drama. We go west and it is cornfields and "patch woods" and most importantly good walking.

If you all can get it worked out, load up your swampland blues and get yourselves up here. I got plenty of room.

ROAD TRIP

Thanks Chris. Well MR. Jack you heard the man, pack your bags! I would love to have MR. Jack make that trip with me, all you have to do is set back and ride.

Road Trip

Chris And Steve I really thank you guys for the invitation, and the thought of getting to come up there and hunt with a couple of guys like you two, with a couple of great hounds it almost makes me say yes, but I imagine with the trip to Kansas next week and then turn around and head to the Fall Round-up in Missouri as soon as we get back from Kansas is probably about all the traveling this ole home boy can handle for a while, but it was truly nice of you guys to invite me.(Thank You)

LITTLE LEVI

It was my Grandsons first Birthday Party today. He turned one year old on Thursday the 17th and Jimmie Johnson turned 40 that day and Mason turned 5 Friday the 18th.

This picture is my favorite, I'm holding Levi, my Dad is beside me and MR. Perry, my ex Father in law but still family in my heart and Shane my son behind us. In this picture is a proud Dad, a proud Paw Paw and two proud Great Grand Paws.

September 17 is Constitution day, Steve. Maybe your grandson will grow up to be a lawyer or politician.

LEVI

Dad never watched any racing until my brother and I got into it 10 years ago. He never hunted much either, he was always working trying to raise the 5 hard headed kids him and mom just had to have. If he wasn't at work at the Illinois Central Gulf RR he was in the garden, splitting wood or cutting grass, always busy. Quite man and hard worker.

I was thinking since Levi was born on Jimmie's BD he would be a race car driver But he's going to be to big to get through the window. Already 30lbs at 1 year old.

MR. Perry is also a quite, hard working man who served our country 3 tours as a chopper pilot. He then flew choppers for Chevron and PHI offshore for many years but like my Dad he is retired and enjoys the Great Grandkids.

BOGUE CHITTO PEBBLES

We went to Casey's in Florida yesterday and picked up Pebbles. Left just before lunch and got home at 3am. I told Beverly, I PROMISED Beverly that this was the last pup for a long time. I'm keeping a female off BO and Stormy so out of the two young females I hope one comes on like I like and will replace Stormy when she is gone. She is a good looking pup with good color and a huge pup mouth on her. It raining lightly here this morning so can't get a picture of her but will in the next few days and get it posted. The one from BO and Stormy will be named Bogue Chitto Blue Rose.

Got another update from Troy on Briar. Ups and downs, about the same as he was doing here. Getting under a few coon but also opening on tracks that don't end up under trees. Running a little trash. Hopefully with some collar discouragement and steady being put in coons he will get it out of his system and come around and get serious on treeing coon. Troy said he hunted with someone else the other night and Briar treed the only coon they looked at. Hopefully get some more rain out his way as he said they have just had enough to settle the dust and like us they need a lot more.

PUPS

The 10 pups are growing good. I gave them their first worming today and will worm them each week until 6 weeks old then every other week. There is a couple of huge ones that are the Bull Dozers of the pile. If another pup is on a tit and they want it, they get it. All the rest are nice size its just these two really stand out. They are starting to " Blue UP " as you can see. When you run your hand against the grain it is really dark down at the base so I feel they will all look good in another few weeks. Took BO to Black Branch Swamp last night but didn't make a tree. Well it was 2am so I should have said this morning. Saw one crossing the road at 5am as I was headed home so they moved right before daylight and BO just didn't have a track he could work. Very boring 2 1/2 hours. We got a little shower of rain yesterday evening but not near enough. Its sunny and dry again but it is cooler. It was 60 this morning and felt good.

Hunting

Took BO up past the Haunted House Bottom. The little gravel road winds for miles through the swamp and its a huge block of land with no houses up that stretch of road so I took BO further up than I usually do to cut him loose. Pointed him west down a little creek and he got in 766yds before he struck, trailed it a few hundred yards and fell treed. I got into him and he was on a big post oak surrounded by young pines and it was tough to find a spot to shine. I finally give up and we came on out. Cut him one more time and didn't get a bark. Tracks are few and far between right now. Need some rain and a little wind to knock the acorns to the ground. Try again tomorrow night.

COON SPOTTED!

Took BO back to Haunted House Bottom and he got on a track, finally. He opened 4 times, drifted a couple hundred yards and opened a few more times, drifted another couple hundred opened a few more times and fell treed. I rode 4 wheeler around and got within 80yds of him. He was treed on a medium size Beech and had a big coon in the top. Didn't see any young ones setting up anywhere around so I put this one down to him. Been wanting a coon to lay a drag for Bam Bam and now I got it and will lay him a track in the morning. It was a big boar. Loaded up and went to Black Branch Swamp and drove in about a half mile and cut him loose. He went in 155yds, opened off and on and treed at 267. Went in and he was on a medium size oak covered in vines but I found the coon after shaking a vine then backing out and looking again. We left this one to run again and came on home. I did some bush hogging in the swamp today and saw the US Forestry Service that oversees the 16th section land we lease. The guy said a timber company was supposed to be moving in soon and cutting timber. That news was a bummer to hear. I hope they are just cutting log size pine and not hardwood. Still probably going to make a mess and tear up our trail system. Wish I would hit the Powerball so I could buy a huge chunk of mature hardwood bottoms along the river. I wouldn't ever cut one tree unless it was dead. Big woods is getting so hard to find here in the south. I'm going to put Jet Boat in river tomorrow and do a little fishing and hunt out of it tomorrow night. Rain next week they say, looking forward to some better Hunting!

Glad you're getting under them Steve. This dry stuff we are both getting will benefit these dogs. When we finally get the rain, they'll look like they're loaded with rocket fuel.

BAM BAM TREED!!

At daylight this morning I took the coon BO treed last night and laid a track through the woods and down the 4 wheeler trail about a hundred yards and hung it in a small Beech. I rode 4 wheeler back to the house and put it up then cut Bam Bam loose and walked in the direction of the track. As soon as he hit it he took off but didn't say anything as he trailed up this new scent. He went by the tree once, spun around with his head in the air and fell treed. I just could see him up the trail from where I waited. I let him tree about a minute, turned my video on my phone on and walked on down to him. He was serious about wanting that coon and I will post video later this evening. I petted him up, picked him up and toted him about 100yds and put him down and called him as I headed on back to the house. Before I got back in the yard he was under the coon treed again so had to go back and tote him all the way back to his pen and put him up. He is going to Love Hating Coon! February can't get here quick enough! He is only 3 months old but acts as mature as most do at 6 months.

BAM BAM VIDEO

Video of Bam Bam treed on drag this morning. This is first and last drag he will work. Several months from now we will start with the real thing, but for now I'm loving what I'm seeing! Click on picture to see video.

Bam Bam looks like he'll be an early starter for you, Steve. What a mouth on the little guy!

Posted by Gary Napier II on 09-26-2015 03:29 AM:

Good luck with him Steve. He has a nice mouth.

Posted by JHannack on 09-26-2015 04:01 AM:

Nice

I bet that put a heck of a smile on your face. It's so exciting when you see a young pup showing potential early. He's showing the must have qualities that you want, he's got the looks and mouth for sure. Good luck with him.

BAM BAM

Thanks Guys! Yea, he had a smile on my face. I love to see the signs of one with natural ability at such a young age. That's a credit to all the breeders in his background. Terry Tucker has two of these pups and on his thread he is describing them as nice and natural pups as he has seen. This cross looks like it clicked and I'm looking for great things from this pup later on down the road. He has a good mouth and that is a must for me to put my time in one. I have a 2 month old female here out of Zero, BO's half brother, and that little girl has a whale of a mouth also. Will get pictures of her up sometime today.

Stormy and her pups are doing good. I hunted BO this morning at 4am and when I checked on pups 4 of the were out of the swimming pool. They just turned 2 weeks old Thursday but they are getting up on their feet walking around pretty good. Eyes are all open and we have been handling them some. Will start giving them some milk replacer and blended up feed into a mush starting this next week. BO treed one in deep this morning up a big oak that went into an even bigger Turkey Pine. NO Track, just felled treed.

BAM BAM

I kept the tail from that coon and had it in a bag in the fridge because I wanted to tease Pebbles with it this morning. I took some trot line string about 6' and tied to the tail and tied the other end to a long Bamboo pole. I couldn't get her fired up so I turned Bam Bam loose. I got dizzy from spinning with that pole as fast as I could with Bam Bam almost catching that tail a few times, Bawling his head off. I swung around and slapped it into this Turkey Pine in the yard then propped it up against the tree. He Lit It Up! I let him tree a minute or two then put him up. That pup would run the hair off a coon right now. Lot to do before that happens, going to be hard to wait until he's seven months or so old before I start him But I have to wait. BO better tighten up, the competition is looking tough!
