MoeJoe, what a pair. I hope that Moe is a "smiler". He has some pretty good Uncles and Aunts that "smile". I hate to have to break it to y'all but I sold Slam for $1,500 when he was 8 wks old. I don't actually own him. He belongs to Mr Charles Robbins and his son in Mississippi. I just "claim" all of the dogs that I have raised/bred/hunted. I am going to start "claiming" Moose before long if you don't watch out.

Thanks for taking me. As soon as Moe gets some more time under his belt, I will have to bring he up so he can see what his Daddy has to hunt in. I think they always keep a dozen of eggs saved for Buck.
Story...
Every once in awhile, we have an experience in life that has all the components to create a story worth telling...action...drama...sorrow...fear... ...and of course...a happy ending.
The other night, Dave came to load the dogs for a mid week hunt. On these work nights, he has to plan for an early start and is always hopeful of an early end to the night...on this night, it wasn't to be, there were circumstances written in the stars that would mark this night as one to be remembered, perhaps for a life time...
Tonight, it was Leinie's turn to lead our young pup called Slim, through the woods in quest of wily ol' ring tail. After a couple of dumps and tough going, a track was started and both dogs worked pretty hard to make a tree out of it. At first, it didn't sound exactly right but they treed so he started to them with the same anticipation he always has...Mr Coon will be in the tree...
They had the meat so considering that it was a work week night, he thought it was good enough and loaded the dogs and headed home. Upon arriving back home, he started unloading the dogs like he always does...always a struggle it seems...On this occasion, the gate was stretched tight so he had to let go of Leinie's collar to get it unsnapped and in a heart beat...she was gone...The pup was also running around loose but he's easy to catch so he got him rounded up in short order and penned but now...where is Leinie?
The last he saw of her, she was heading around the truck and maybe down the driveway towards the woods...a bad feeling starts to well up inside him as he searches the yard and walks down the drive calling her name...nothing...just the silence of the night in response to his calls. He waits and calls at least 40 minutes, hoping for a sound or some indication of where she could be...he watches down the drive, fearful that a vehicle will come racing down the road...not knowing where she is or even where she might be. The first thing we do when we get ready to pen the dogs is to remove the tracking collars so even with all this new technology, a simple routine we have always followed has created a situation where there is no hope to be able to use it to find her.
Eventually, the reality of a work night hits home and he decides he can't wait any longer so he jumps in the truck puts it back in the garage and then jumps in his truck and drives home.
In the morning when I get up for work, I always check my emails and there in my inbox is a message I dread...Leinie is lost...I couldn't find her and I had to get home to bed with morning coming quickly. He goes on with few words to explain the situation and hopes that I find her in the yard waiting to be put back in the pen...
I get ready and out the door I go to search for her...I also have limited time to be able to find her before I also must answer the call to get to work...I walked to the kennel area and called her name...nothing...not a sound...no rustling of the leaves to indicate she might be curled up along the building or under a bush somewhere close by. I checked the kennel runs that were open, looking in each of the 3 empty runs to see if she had crawled inside to find warmth and refuge...nothing...I walked down the drive and called her name, I looked in the shed and in the garage, under the deck and steps...nothing...
Finally...I had to accept the fact that she wasn't going to be found in any of the usual places, she wasn't out there...I had to get to work...I got my stuff organized to leave with a heavy heart, worried sick that something bad has happened to her...
I have a two car garage and my work truck is parked next to my regular truck, the one that Dave uses to go hunting with all the time. I had to work my way between them to get into my truck and even though this routine is so normal and everything else seems so normal...today...there's no comfort in this routine...things aren't normal today...As I got into my truck to start the engine, my mind is deep in thought wondering how I'm going to arrange for the time to come back and expand my search...neighbors will need to be visted, ads put in the papers...on and on my thoughts race...
I put the truck in gear to back out and as I turned to make sure I didn't hit the side of the garage...a movement catches my eye...not in the drive...not in the yard but right next to me...in the other truck As my eyes focus a little more...it finally becomes apparent what it was that caught my attention...it was Leinie's smiling face...looking through the passenger side window at me...from inside the other truck...HAPPY DAYS!!!
Evidently, as she raced around the truck...instead of charging down the driveway with wild abandon...she simply hopped into the truck and curled up in the back seat. Even when Dave got into the truck to back it down the driveway 50 yards or so and then parked it in the garage...she laid motionless in the back...hoping that she wouldn't be discovered...after all...this was a pretty cozy place to spend the night from a dog's perspective.
Two emotions hit me at the same time...one was great elation and joy at finding her...the other was even more great emotion and joy...because I was going to have some fun with this story...it's way to good to not share with my good friends.
Just goes to show that even in the darkest of times, we should not lose hope because an opportunity to share a story like this could be right around the next corner Old as I am...this is one of the best memory makers I've had the wonderful opportunity to share...these kinds of little events are what makes our sport worth experiencing...priceless...

OHHHHHHH you had me. I was thinking the worst...
You have to wonder about her sometimes. Here's one when I was watching one of my treeing vids of her. She came flying in and up she jumped looking for the coon. Too funny.
Good stuff Tom.
Dave don't you watch horror flicks. The red headed demon is always in the back seat.

Happy ending
Yep, it was a happy...and funny...ending to a tense situation for sure. I can remember about 30 years ago, losing a dog long before bells and tracking systems...I went back the next day and the sight of that dog coming down between huge oaks on a pastured hillside, will stay burned in my brain forever...it was the fist time I had experienced that emotion...like in a story book...
Leinie is one of my favorites Scott, just like she's one of yours. Her and Yank have that certain something special that goes beyond ability in the woods...they're good enough coon dogs but...they're more than that. Some folks are driven in this sport by the competition or harvesting coons...I'm driven by the training and development and having a special relationship with the dogs. Some dogs don't have it...these dogs do.
Anyway, the story was meant to relay all the emotions a person can feel in a situation like that...and then the relief of having it all work out...and of course, it was pretty funny that she was laying in the back seat the whole time, even when he backed the truck up to put it back in the garage...gotta love it!

Now that right there is funny great story Tom. Pastor Mike and I went to our buddy Bud's place and hunted tonight. We had Da moose , The Frog Dawg, and Hurnie. Had a good hunt and man I love this Garmin.
Moose and Frog with the meat.........Moose was like this is a small tree...lol.
This next drop Hurnie split treed about 40 yard's or so from Frog and Moose. Moose and Frog had a good size den and Hurnie with the meat.

The dogs look good Buck, Hurnie has a little grey in the face already...doesn't seem like it should be that way yet...time flies.
The Garmin system is about as good as it gets Buck, it takes a bit of learning but nothing better as far as I'm concerned...it will save a lot of steps and that sure helps these days.
Dave was out again last night and he has a real nice coon laying in the kennel...he's been getting one treed and back home before 10:00 PM most nights and Slim is making most of those trips so he's getting a good foundation laid this fall that will pay a lot of dividends by spring.
Got a new wood splitter...I don't know what the heck I was waiting for...swinging that 9 pound maul is a thing of the past as far as I'm concerned...what a great tool!

Weather
The weather has changed for real...lots of wind and rain with a little sleet mixed in for good measure. Lots of snow not to far to the north and west but that's a good place for it. There's a chance for light snow here overnight but nothing too serious...
Updated our store but don't want to advertise anything in this forum so check out this thread http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthrea...threadid=386634 to find out more.
Dave had another big coon out in the kennel from the other night so he continues to find something each time he goes even though the conditions were real dry up until yesterday and today...won't have to worry about good moisture anymore this fall. Starting tomorrow night, we'll be in the low to mid 20s for overnight lows so any moisture we have now will stay in the ground.
With deer hunting starting next weekend on Saturday, coon hunting will be on the back burner for awhile...hopefully winter won't settle in all of a sudden so we can still hunt a few good nights before it turns to crap.

Saturday night
Dave came out to go hunting tonight and I thought he was losing it...wind was blowing, rain was falling but...perfect night I guess.
He had Cruz along so it's looking like there's another hard hunter on the way up and he was willing to brave the elements as long as Dad was gonna do it. He was wet and tired when they got home but he hung in there and had lots of action to enjoy tonight.
They were back home before 10:00 PM and had to come in the house and get me so I could take some pictures...they had a pretty good night.
Here's two hard hunters, Dave and his son Cruz and 3 nice hounds...The dogs from left to right are Leinie, Yank and Slim
Slim is Cruz's dog and he's a handful to handle...
Nice night of hunting...
It has been very dry up around these parts and Dave says most nights are a struggle to get a track up and running. He tells me that he's making a few trees and a hole now and then before he gets a coon to knock out but after rain all day yesterday and today...it's looking like the conditions have improved.
He takes Slim along just about every time out and he's tracking and treeing on most tracks. He's at that stage where he's just really discovered that it's fun to run that track so he's a little loose on the tough tracks, but he's on the wood pounding like a big dog on the good tracks. For an 7 month old pup, he's doing what we like to see. It won't be long and he'll be carrying his own weight and probably well before he's a year old. Tonight, Dave knocked out one of the coons and it took off running with Yank in hot pursuit...he cut Slim loose and Leinie got in on it too and the coon treed again about 60 yards away...Slim was on the wood and giving it all he had...that's a pretty good outcome for a pup to experience...good stuff!
Slim is by way of
Nt. Ch. PR T-Top Dark Timber Moose
and
Nt. Ch. PR Brown's Leinie Red Ryder
This is a double Rabble Rouser cross that puts old Rat in the 3 generation pedigree, 3 times and that's making for good stuff.
Yank is looking real good and Leinie is just about back in hard shape so the coons will catch heck now that the moisture is back in the ground.
I'd expect Slim to be tracking and treeing his own coons before fall is out but we've got deer hunting season starting next weekend and then for 9 days so we'll have to hope that the snow holds off or doesn't get too deep so we can keep him going just a little longer before winter shuts us down. He's only 7 months old and won't be 8 months until November 29 so he's on a real good pace to make a real nice hound.

Iwould like one just like any one of the three in the last pic.
Great Pic's Tom;
Brought back memories! I have pic's like that of my Son's with me! Brought a smile to my face! Thanks, John

Good stuff
Yep, it's the kind of memory that will stick with us for a long time John, I let too many years go by without documenting like that but we sure want to take advantage now and make sure we have these kinds of moments frozen in time for all to look back on.
Tim, I've got a couple in the works so we'll see how it all plays out. I like the actions of these other young dogs I have here in the yard and they react real well to seeing a coon already so it's just a matter of time before the rest falls into place. I've got one in mind for you, we'll just see how well he comes along...I'd bet it isn't going to take too long.
There's a little bit of snow coming down this morning but nothing sticking just yet, except on top the deck and dead logs and heavy brush up in the woods...winter is just around the corner but I hope it holds off for another month before it sets in for good. I wouldn't mind a couple of inches on the ground for next week deer hunting but I guess we'll take it as it comes...eh?

This is a great pix Tom.
You have Father and son, full brother and sister and Leinie's son.
Like a great old country singer said "It's a family tradition."

Hey Scott, you're right about the picture, it's a memory maker for sure. It's hard for folks to know and understand the unique history and background of that kind of picture but there is so much history both past and for the future in that photo...it makes a feeling inside that can't be described, especially the older I get...
Hey Buck, that picture with Moose outside the structure is great...it's what magazine covers are made of...It's one you'll be able to look back on in 20 years and it will take you away to a different place and time...it's one to frame and put on the wall or mantle for sure.
Our deer season will shut us down for awhile but we're sure hoping ol' man winter stays away for a little longer so we can enjoy some late season hunting and maybe bag a few more turdy pounders...eh? Hopefully we'll be back at it during the first week in December...weather permitting.

Good night
You must have made it out alive Buck...I was worried about you
Any night that you can make a tree or two and come out in good shape with all the dogs on the end of the lead...is a good night. Hopefully you didn't have to trek too far through National Forest or Public Hunting ground to get to the dogs...
Great pictures by the way...
