BIG ROUND
Took BO to Dry Black Branch Swamp tonight and first drop he got in there about 300yds opened a few times and fell treed, I went in and he was treed on a big Red Oak on the edge of a cow pasture. I got out into the field and found the coon pretty quick. I left him alone and petted BO up and we rode further up the swamp and cut him again. He left there like a shot and was soon over half a mile then over one mile, still no bark. I drove out and hit the little county road, Ginn Road and got up even with him and he was still 800yds in. He made this big loop and as you can see was starting back down the middle of it. He ended up coming all the way down the middle to the left edge and U turned back and went back to where I cut him so I had to ride back into the swamp and round him up. He was gone about 50 minutes and never struck. He was in fine woods with big oaks and on the far left there is some seep springs in there. But most of swamp is bone dry. If there was another coon in there he didn't come across him. We need rain soooo Bad. They say we have a good chance this weekend and I hope they are right.
MR. Ed, Bam Bam sure sounds good to me and I love the signs I see from this pup. Sure glad I talked myself into getting him even though I didn't need another pup but women buy another pair of shoes when they have a closet full. Never can have to much of a Good Thing!
Tommy, Bam is off Terry Tuckers Boomer hound and Mike Lovekamp's Hugger 11. She is littermate sister to the Stormy gyp I have that just had my BO pups.

SINKER CYPRESS
I was off work today and had found a Sinker last week while pulling that other one so I tackled getting it out of the river today. It was behind the house and stretched from my side of the river all the way to the other side. It was mostly buried in sand but the down stream side was exposed so I first set up the tractor further to the left than where it is in these pictures. I knew the big end was on my side of the river and the stump was completely buried so I pulled cable across river and hooked to that end. I was using all the leverage I could get and was set up down river so when I broke the suction I would have the river current helping me as I side pulled it and swung it all the way around. It worked like a charm, just had to move the tractor a few times going upriver each time so as to keep the leverage and side pull working for me. When I had it spun 180 degrees I cut 3- 10' logs off it and drug them to the house and the second picture is whats still left with the stump which was grooved up beautifully by the river current. It is all in the yard now. Going to be a lot of beautiful lumber come out of this one. A month ago I didn't have a log in the yard and now I have enough that will cut out close to 2,500 Board Feet. Gives me something to Sawmill on and stack for air drying. I always enjoy cutting here at the house with the river for a view and watching for deer as I cut.

SINKER CYPRESS
Picture of Freckles checking out our Sinker Cypress Stump today. That little dog is my daytime river dog. She makes every Jet Boat Ride, every Log Pulling, Rock Hunting Adventure that I go on. Those Blueticks love me but none as much as this dog does. She's my pal when I'm tromping the river.

PUPS
All pups are doing great and have been weaned and eating dry Victor puppy food now. They got their first round of shots today and wormed for the 5th time. Some will make their way to their new homes tomorrow and a few more next week. We are really looking forward to our trip to Indiana with all the Fall colors showing up and a coon setting in every tree, BO just needs to pick a tree to bark up! lol! I know its not that good but it will be a lot better than this Southern Swamp Man and Hound are used to. Bought me a couple new tires for my truck today and some Buck Busters Game Mix to plant tomorrow before the rain hits. We will go from drought to flooding they say in a few days. A Hurricane is hitting Mexico on the Pacific side with winds of 200mph, a Cat 5. They say it will drift along the coast after it crosses Mexico and get in the Gulf and drift east along the Coast Line dumping rain in buckets. That's just all I need. Seems like every time we take a road trip its something major going on at home to stress about. Last year when we went to Miami for the Nascar Race in November we had a frigid cold front hit here and it dropped into the mid 20's which is unheard of for us in November. I was at the race stressing that I might have pipes busting at home and when it thawed out water spewing everywhere. But I didn't. Now we possibly have a foot or more of heavy rain coming and even though its very dry if it comes down fast it will run off instead of soaking in and that means the river might flood. Hoping they have it wrong.

Indiana Trip
Steve How is coonhunting. I'm sure you are like me over here dry. They talk like we may get some rain over the next few days. You may be able to float those big Cyprus logs up in your yard. Just kidding I hope we don't get quite that much. I was just trying to remember when you were going up to Chris's place in Indiana. I hope you have a good trip and you and Chris have a great time. I got to meet Chris at the Fall Roundup. Chris is a great guy. I really enjoyed our visit. Take plenty of pictures and I want to read all about your hunts and anything else you do while there. Take care and be careful on your trip.
KADE AND HIS NEW PUP
This is a picture of Kade and his new pup, Pac-Man. Him and his brother and Dad came today and picked the pup up. That boy was some happy that I gave him a pup and his Dad said that's all he's been talking about. It did my Heart and Soul good to see the joy in his face with his new pup. There is nothing stronger than the bond between a young man and his hound pup and I guarantee those two are bonding right now. Wouldn't surprise me if after his parents go to bed Kade would go out and sneak that pup back into the house. I used to do that even though I knew I would get a whipping if caught. Always loved those pups and still do. Hoping Pac-Man grows up to be the finest Cooner the South has ever seen.

LOGS
This is a picture of the Sinker Cypress that I have pulled in the past week. I wasn't going to pull any this summer but the guy from Biloxi that bought that sinker give me the fever to pull some so I did. I hope I have the fever out of my system for a while because my ole body can't take it like I used to. I was up before daylight this morning and as soon as it was light enough to see I have been busy until 6pm this evening. I disc 5 food plots which total 3 acres and planted Buck Busters seed mix and put out 13-13-13 fertilizer on it. They say now that we aren't just getting some good rain they are talking the possibility of 8" to 12" of rain. I hope they are wrong as usual because as bad as we need rain we don't need a flood.
MR. Jack, I haven't hunted the past few nights. Tired of not hearing some good trailing or a good race. So dry that the coon BO is treeing just a few barks then treed. Waiting on the rain. Never thought I would miss my flooded swamp as bad as I miss Black Branch Swamp being full of water. We are going to be in Indiana Thursday and looking forward to the trip. Taking 2 of the pups with us, Chris is getting a male and another guy in Wisconsin is getting a female. BO better show me a half dozen coon a night while I'm there, lol! After that trip then its the State hunt in Brookhaven and I will see you there, then the next weekend we are headed to Destin, Orlando, and Miami for 8 days, back home for Thanksgiving and one other weekend then headed to Oklahoma to the Battle of The Breeds and to pick Briar up. Didn't travel much this summer because of that job on I-10 we had but we are about to make up for it. You and I will get together after this rain and when I get back from Indiana. See if we can't tree a couple, Take Care.

BO
Thanks Chris and yea, that's BO up there being Jealous. Any time I let the pups out and sit down on the ground talking to them and petting them up BO lets me know he's not happy that I'm sweet talking to any other dog. Otherwise he is quite unless someone pulls up at dark to go hunting but that's not very often. How is Wolf and the other pup doing? Are yaw getting a lot of this rain off that storm?

We had over 7" of rain yesterday and a little over 4" so far today.
It's been hard to hunt here because of the dry conditions. That should quickly change now. Wolf's treed about three coons in maybe ten tries over the last month. I have a five month old blue English male that's already splitting and hunting over half mile deep on his own. He made his first tree about five nights ago. Big mouth on that boy, and he trees at about 150 barks per minute.
PUPS
Thanks Tommy, I'm down to 5 pups now as the new owners came and picked theirs up and I'm hauling 2 of them north on Thursday. I have 3 females to sell if anyone is interested as a couple of the guys have not called me back so must have backed out. If any of yaw that knows a teenager that wants a pup he or she can get one of these females free. Congrats on Rhett getting another win on Case!
Chris, sounds like a real nice up and coming Blue English pup you got. Already splitting and hunting that deep on his on he will be nice sounds like. We got the rain Saturday night, All day yesterday and all night last night. Over 7" but we needed every drop and it came down steady so it was a soaking rain and the river is not up much now but they say upriver from me about 45 miles they got floods and flash flood warnings and that the river here at the house will start rising today and crest tomorrow evening above flood stage. They are predicting it to crest at 16.5' and flood stage is 15'. It don't get in the yard until its around 23' so it looks like I'm all good. The sun is out at the moment and while I'm on river watch I'm going to be washing my Black Truck and packing some things getting ready for our road trip. I will hunt BO tonight and tomorrow night and it should be some Good Hunting now that the swamps are flooded he should do his thing, Tree Coons!

ROAD TRIP
Well I didn't get to hunt last night because it rained until I give up and went to bed at 10pm. Just a steady sprinkle and heavy mist all last night and most of today. Decided not to go tonight because its muggy and warm and don't want to take the chance BO getting snake bit before we leave tomorrow after lunch on our trip to Indiana. We are packed and ready but Beverly has to work until lunch before we can leave. The guy that's taking care of the hounds and staying here while we are gone came by today and got his instructions and a key to the place. Chris said they were getting plenty rain today so BO should feel at home in the mud and water. Looking forward to treeing a few of those Big Coon in some open woods. We will stop in Tennessee tomorrow evening and finish the ride Thursday morning. Weather looks great for Thursday and Friday and we will head for home on Saturday.

INDIANA ROAD TRIP
We made it back home at 9pm last night from our trip to Indiana dropping off two pups and hunting with Chris Powell. First I want to thank Chris and his fine family for having us as guest at their Beautiful Home, taking BO and I hunting a couple nights and giving one of these pups a chance at becoming what he was bred to be, Coon Tree'er. We carried my Mom and Dad with us and on the way up give them a quick look inside of Mammoth Cave Park in Kentucky. From there on up to Chris the fall colors were putting on a brilliant show in those hills, cliffs and river and creek bottoms. We dropped my parents off at Cliffty Falls Inn on the Ohio River. What a beautiful place and they had a great time there as Beverly and I made our way about another hour north to Chris Home. We stayed in the Bunkhouse and it was a good setup and had an outdoor kitchen. After getting there Chris built up an outdoor fire that evening that we sat around talking about hounds, hunting and life. Carrie, Chris wife, cooked up a fine supper and we all ate together in their home. They have 3 fine children, Jake, Cora and Emma. You could feel the Love and Happiness that was present in this home with this fine family. It was Cora's Sweet Sixteenth Birthday and we had some Birthday Cake after supper. At dark Chris and I loaded BO up and made our way to a fine place to tree a few coon. He couldn't take Jazz as she was in heat. We pulled into a picked soybean field that had some standing corn left. As we eased down the side of the corn in the truck it was a basket racked buck to our left and out in front that moved with us. About time we were going to stop another bigger buck came from in front of us moving toward the other buck. We stopped the truck and I unloaded BO and asked which way to cut him and Chris said anywhere I want. The woods were still a 100yds away so I pointed BO toward them and off he went. He veered to the right and I saw some does in that direction then he came back around the corn then took off to the left and made a loop of several hundred yards down the edge of the field and came back near us so we went to the woods and cut him again and he took off down the left edge again but when he got a few hundred yards away he turned right into the woods and hit a good track and within a hundred yards or so he put that coon up a small tree. We went in and looked at that one, walked a little ways and cut him again. He opened a few times on a fair track and treed again. He was on a small beech that was beside a den tree. No coon in the small tree and he couldn't have crossed to the den unless it was a little coon so I would have to minus BO on this one. We cut him again but he went back to the little beech and I could tell this time he was winding a coon. I think it was one in the den or a lot of scent there he was treeing on. We cut him again and he got after another good track and treed a big coon quick. We looked at him and I took a few pictures and we went and put BO up and let Jazz go near the house. Jazz got deep in a hurry and after a while she started opening on a track that you could tell was an old feeder track. In just a little while she located and treed across the creek and she sure sounded good hammering that tree. She has a big bawl mouth that sounds like a hound should sound. Fast, hard chop on tree and she was really spitting them out. We made our way to her and she was treed on a big cedar with another that grew up right beside it making for tough shining. Reminded me of our Turkey Pines at home, very hard to find a coon in them. The next morning I was up at daylight listening to turkeys coming off the roost not a hundred yards from their house. Yelping, clucking, kee kee run and then what I was waiting on, the fly down cackle. Then, Gobble Gobble Gobble! An Ole Tom fired off on that cackle, October 30th in Indiana. I have heard them a few times in the fall gobble around here but its rare. We went into Madison shopping that day and had a great time. I bought a cypress wood bowl hand carved from a Burl off a cypress tree. It was signed on the bottom by the artist and numbered 001. It was in a antique shop and originally priced at 200 but I got it for 49. Thought it was cool that I pull a lot of Sinker Cypress but bought a cypress bowl in Indiana. That night Chris and I hooked up with Donnie Walston that owns a male off Bocephus and the Oxy gyp owned by Robert Shelton. He is a nice hound with a great mouth and when him and BO hit their first tree together it was like Heaven Opened Up the Perfect Treed Hound Sound Book and cast the sound out in front of us a few hundred yards. Those two males sounded great to me, treeing hard together on a huge tree. I made a short video coming into them that I will post later. We made 7 trees Friday night with them starting out treeing together and ending the night treeing split about 50 yards apart and looking at both coon. Chris saw another they treed that was in a nest up in a big beech and they treed several dens and Chris stuck his camera in one trying to see if we could see a coon and stuff was falling down on his hand as he had it in there so we pretty sure the coon was home. All in all a great night with some great guys. The hound work sounds great reading this but there were moments when I would have adjusted the fine tune button if they had one as we all know there is NO PERFECT HOUND. But in my mind it was a great hunt that I will always remember. We left early yesterday morning making our way home and by the time we hit Alabama it was raining hard the rest of the way home. I have 18 pictures from our trip that I am about to post, hope yaw enjoy looking at them. Chris is talking about coming down in February and I hope that works out for him. BO and I will introduce him and Jazz to the Southern Swamps.

Steve sounds like you and Chris had a great time. It was pretty dry when you left, but we have done caught up on the rain. Steve Those are some beautiful pictures.
It was great having you here Steve. Come anytime. You know the layout now. If I pull in one night and see that black Ford parked next to the bunkhouse, I'll know who it is.
Great pictures as always. Most people don't know this type of terrain is in Indiana. I don't know a houndsman anywhere that would cut a hound into that canyon and not think it was rough. I sure enjoyed your parents and wife too.
Bogey and Miss Wisconsin are doing great here.

Thanks Guys. Here is a video from Friday night of BO and a half brother of his named Bimbo, owned by Donnie, treed on the first tree of 7.When they hit the wood they sure sounded good together in that patch of woods. BO had tore his rear pad again and was hopping before the hunt and is hopping today but when we cut them he was picking them up and putting them down. Forgot for a couple hours all about that tore pad. Click on picture to see video.

Tree Bam Bam!!!
It rained all day today, nothing heavy just a steady light rain. It quit late this evening and after the NASCAR Race I went out and cut Bam and Pebbles loose. They tussled with each other a few minutes and I walked out to look at my grass coming up that I had planted last week. When I got up on the knoll Bam Bam came by me on the run headed for the cypress slough. I walked back down to the kennel to let the 5 little pups out to play and just as I did I heard Bam open upriver about a quarter mile. I had Beverly watch the little pups and I took off on the 4 wheeler. When I rode as far as I could go and stopped he was treed. I took out through the privet hedge headed upriver to him. He was treed on a big, dead oak that the top was broke out of and it was a shallow hollow in the top. How do I know it was shallow? Because I saw the back of the coon just above the top lip of the dead oak. I didn't have my rifle or phone for a video but plenty time for that. Bam has the Giddy Up his Grand Sire Jake had. I was hoping I could wait until February to start this pup but he ain't gonna wait that long. Will be filling up a few feeders this week for the first time in a long time. And that's just to put him on enough coon in the beginning that maybe he will leave the junk alone. Will hunt him just one or two short hunts a week by himself and ease him along and see how it goes. Looking good so far!

Congrats to little Bam Bam. Or maybe I should say big Bam Bam. It's great to see a young pup head out on his own and get it done. Looking forward to seeing some video of Bam Bam in action.
Man I love them young dogs and to see them tree their fist coon. Sounds like he is well on his way.
