BAM BAM

Thanks Guys, MR. Ed I just got back from setting some live traps over on my place where my shop is. Its to close to a black top that is pretty busy at times but it has a lot of coon and I have caught a lot the past 2 years and brought them over here or Black Branch Swamp to work the pups with. I'm going to show Bam One and only One then cut it loose and let him run it. After that the ones I catch I will get cut loose at night and go get Bam and let him trail them up and tree them if he can. I'm excited about this pup.

Bam Bam

Steve sounds like you gave Bam Bam The right name. Looks like a lot of natural stuff there. He may be what we are all looking for. Good luck with him. How is Bo's foot, will he be ready for the state hunt. I sure would like to see a blue dog win it,and there is no one that I have more confidence in than you and Bo.

INDIANA

Thanks MR. Jack. I'm resting BO tonight and giving the swamp a day to drain out. We had 4" total rain from Saturday, Sunday and last night. That's on top of the over 7" we had last weekend. I will hunt him hard tomorrow and see how he responds with his foot but I think he will be fine. Been on this computer looking for land in Indiana, Illinois or Kentucky. Got the fever to buy me a small piece near a National Forest to go to for a few weeks a year and tree some of those BIG COON. When I hunted with MR. ED years ago and saw almost 30 coon in one night I always wanted a place to come to and hunt that kind of coon population. The trip and hunting with Chris has that fire burning again. I found 10 acres and a cabin bordered on 2 sides by a forest that I am calling about tomorrow. I told Chris I have 15 more years to work and I could finance something for that length of time and it would be paid for when I retire. I'm going to quit following NASCAR and use that money to pay the note. The hills looked pretty steep so I might have to buy a sure footed mule or I could take a bunch of cable and pull it tight with my winch and put some zip lines from hill top to hill top. Hounds get treed on the next hill just clip off to the line and enjoy the ride!!!

Illinois

MR. Ed Thanks so much and I hated I didn't have the time to come hunt with you a couple nights on my trip to Indiana, BUT, work is slow until first of year and even though I have road trip to Florida coming up next weekend then its Thanksgiving,if this weather stays warmer than normal and decent I might head your way the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and hunt with you 3 nights. So do like Motel 6 and keep the light on for me!

WATER EVERY WHERE

Went to Black Branch Swamp tonight and its still flooded and draining out but I cut BO anyway. He left in one foot of water and when he finally treed it was 6" every where. He covered a big area cutting and slashing back and forth. He located once the first 20 minutes I cut him but didn't settle. He knew a coon was in there somewhere and he kept busy trying to find the right tree and he finally did. It was a little frustrating setting on 4 wheeler watching him work that area over and over but when he found the right tree and lit it up and I went in walking in water the whole 447yds to him and saw the coon it made it all worth while. One thing for sure is he got his exercise tonight in all that water. We have missed the flooded swamp. Two months from now we will be ready for it to dry back up but right now it was fun listening to him bust the water all night.

PUPS

This is a couple pictures and a video of some of the pups off BO and Stormy. Click on bottom picture to see video of pups around my tractor while its running. They could care less as they have no fear and are the boldest pups you will see. BO was same way at 8 weeks old. The first time I fired up the mower and turned on the blades he came closer instead of tucking tail and running. I love BOLD. Just got off the phone with JR. Willis and he bought one of the females so I only have two left to sell. He is the man that sold Thunder to Roger Murdock. Corky will be delivering his pup soon. Proud he gave one of these a chance.

That bottom picture is the video, it didn't space it from the pup walking the log picture. Its in bottom left corner.

That pup with his feet on the log is a nice one! They were all good looking but he's always caught my eye. Are you keeping him?

MALE PUP

His name is Bogue Chitto Blade, Mason named him and said WE are keeping him, lol! I give Chris first pick of all males like I did you with the females and I took 2nd choice. They were all nice and I like the ones we kept but to tell you the truth it was hard leaving Bogey and Miss Wisconsin in Indiana. I had done got attached to them. I guess I'm still a kid at heart and have a soft spot for all the little pups.

Pups

It can be very hard to let them go, when your a dog man it's just in the blood. I'm glad your holding on to him, I think he's going to be special. Miss Wisconsin will be in good hands, she'll be well taken care of and she'll get her shot. She'll return home one day for a hunt! Next winter when it's -20 up here would be a good time.

MISS WISCONSIN

JHannack, your welcome to come for a hunt here anytime. A year or so from now Miss Wisconsin should be well started and on her way to making a Coon Hound and when its to cold to hunt up there just load her up and come on south. I hope you made it home safe with her and thanks again for giving one of these pups a chance.

Likewise

You are welcome up here anytime. We made it home around 2 this morning and at 6:30 my son was jumping on me to go bring her in before school. I got to say that I didn't need another and the Mrs wasn't super happy about it. But I'm sure glad I did. When you say bold, it's Bold with a capitol B and a couple !!!!!!
She came in the house like she owned it, while wrestling with my sons coon skin cap an alarm started going off in the bedroom, she shot down the hall to go check it out. Now the naming game has begun, the wife and son are fully involved and hopefully we can come to an agreement. Thanks again.

Anyone thinking about a pup should jump on one of these before there gone. I think you'd be very pleased.

Bogey

Jeremy, Bogey is some kind of tore up. He is missing his sissy. What a baby! He walks around outside looking for her, he thinks she's in the house so he whines at the door. When he comes in he looks for her. It pathetic.

Bam Bam's Coon

About 30 minutes before this picture was took there was a big, mean boar coon in this trap. I caught one last night over on my other place and brought it here behind the house for some Bam Bam training. I walked into the trap after I had it in place with Bam and he went nuts. I let him get worked up for a minute, hooked him back and cut the coon loose. I give him about 3 minutes then cut Bam. He didn't open the first 50 yards but after that he gave plenty mouth and rolled that coon hard down river where the coon went out across the rock bar and hit the river with Bam right behind him. The current carried him a little ways down and he got out on the other side and didn't pick him right up so back in the river he went and came out on my side and I caught him up much to his disappointment. He did NOT want to be caught. He did great for his first running coon. The one he came up on the other evening just went right back home and climbed but I could tell this one was gonna be a Runner and he was.

When I walked to get the trap and bring it back to the house I let the little ones out to follow me. Look at their body language while checking out the heavy coon sent on this trap. ALL tails are up and proud and bold. None of them shied away or acted spooked in any kind of way. I like that. The one on this side is the one headed to MR. JR. Willis. I think he will be well pleased. He wanted one because he knows Stormy's side are Reproducers. The Thunder dog was off one of her sisters, Bam Bam is off another sister and Bob Gleason has one of Stormy's sisters and a fine female from her. If BO did his share these should make some fine Cooners. Two pups left, both females. One has a blue eye. She can see fine and is as good looking as the one headed to JR. The other pup is a little lighter but still plenty dark enough.

Chris don't be so hard on Bogey because he misses his sister and sounds like she could care less that shes away from him, lol! Typical male and female, lol! I was hoping he would whine a bit because I was gone but Cora took my place babying him so I guess he was fine with that. But now he don't have a sister to dust roll so my guess is he will try one of your cats. Let me know when he does and how bad he gets it!

Jeremy I'm glad you made it home fine and sounds like she has settled in. Keep me updated on her. About time yaw start thawing out this spring and those ole coon come out of their dens stinking and looking for food you and Chris gonna have some fun with those two pups. They should be just about the right age to get cranking before it gets to hot this summer.

MISSISSIPPI STATE HUNT

Thanks Josh, we proud of them.

Went to the State Hunt tonight at Brookhaven and drew out with a great group of guys. We went to the National Forest over near Bude. I always remember MR. Frank Erwin talking about the terrain over there. He said it is some steep hills, straight up then back down then up for a couple hundred feet then back down. Said if you didn't know how to get around in there those hills would kill you, he was right. My legs have never burned so bad and my body was having severe muscle spasms. Big, open woods but the hills are KILLER. 3 Walkers and Ole BO. We cut them and two of the Walkers got struck pretty quick and smoked it out of hearing straight away from us pretty quick. They were over a Mile from the truck and out of hearing. The other walker was ahead of us and a little left and BO was hard left at around 500yds. We started walking to split the difference and finally got the other two within hearing. The other walker was bumping around on a cold track and BO was going up bottoms about 600yds, making a loop then coming by us on the run to the next bottom and doing it again. I just knew any minute he was going to strike a good track and have the tree to himself but it never happened, until Timeout. Yes, it happened AGAIN. They called their two walkers treed and when we got in there they were split 80yds apart, one on a pine that we circled and the other on a oak and she had a coon so plus her up. BO had finally struck while we were shining the trees and blowing squallers. He never came into the trees yet he was only 60yds away. We got them off the tree and Judge was talking about a timeout so we could walk closer to trucks and cast again. I reminded him I had a dog struck in working a track so we waited BO bumped around a couple minutes and was only 36 yards from us. I honestly thought he was working the feeder track of the coon that the walker had already treed and I talked myself into agreeing to call timeout and I would catch him up and we could get to walking. BIG MISTAKE by me. As soon as I started to walk his way to catch him he drifted off and I told the guys lets go, I will call time to time and he will catch up and I will handle him. We hadn't walked 50yds and BO fell treed back behind us. You guessed it, Coon Seen. Medium size oak and he was sitting in the top swaying in the breeze looking with both eyes. I almost laughed just to keep from crying I guess. Forgot to mention also we were hunting in a steady rain, all night. We had about 35 minutes left to hunt and by the time we got to where we were going to cut them my legs were screaming. I withdrew as I knew if BO went back in there deep I would have a hard time walking to him and was worried I wouldn't make it back to the truck. They cut their two and they struck quick again and headed right back from where we had just came from and about then the bottom fell out. It rained buckets of water. I sure was glad I had BO snapped up. The other walker was treed and he was in the direction of the truck so we went to him and circled him up and the other two had treed but they circled them up also. Hunt was over. Congrats to the man and hound that won the cast. Good guys, good hounds but I need to get in better shape. 4 wheeler has spoiled me. I hunt some bad, thick swamps and sometimes walk a long way but its flat. Those hills will make or break ya and tonight they broke me. Sitting here typing this and drinking pickle juice so when I lay down maybe the cramps won't be so bad. I remember I didn't hunt last year at Charlie Brown Park that Thursday night because it rained like 8" in a few hours and was storming. MR. Jack called me a CANDY APPLE or something close to that, I'm sure yaw know what he was talking about. Anyway tonight I saw him and told him it could rain sideways and me and Ole Bo was hunting. I couldn't get the reputation of a CANDY APPLE! He said, well I haven't called you any names in a while. Well MR. Jack I want you to know that when I had walked all those hills for over a mile and BO treed that coon in timeout, Again, if you had been there and called me a CANDY APPLE I would have took that as a compliment because at that moment I knew as out of shape as I have got over the years what I was thinking of myself was a lot worse than CANDY APPLE! Glad BO can't read the score cards he would be plum disgusted with me. See you tonight!!

Another tough break for Bo during a hunt. Hang in there, Steve. The tide will turn and you and Bo will show what he's made of.

STATE HUNT

The heavy rain has settled in over south Mississippi this evening. We been in a gap most of the day but no more and it extends back into Texas. I will not be hunting tonight as I had enough of a drenching last night and the radar for tonight is looking way worse. Mason is here and we will be watching LSU go kick Bama's Butt!!!

Mr. Jack, your right, Candy to the Core, lol!!

Chris, I think your right but honestly BO isn't where he needs to be to go kick some butt. The lack of hunting this summer due to that nightmare of a job we had and then the drought and me not hitting the woods as hard as last year really shows. He trees coons for sure but the speed that he used to hunt with isn't there yet. He's just out of shape like me but we will hit it hard this week then will miss a week while we are gone to the races then BO and I will hit it hard and get him back to hitting on all cylinders. I take the blame because until I do my part and get him tuned up and in hunting shape I can't fuss about him without feeling guilty. We gonna get there.

Candy

Steve, some time I pick at my best friends about things like that, but you know there is a difference in being candy and having good sence. I'm not out there tonight either. My dog is, but I'm not. Chris handled Gin last night. they didn't win, but they both did a good job and I was proud of both of them. Chris is handling her again tonight. I went with them last night, but I didn't figure he needed me getting in his way so I didn't go tonight. Gin is a nice hound and I really like her. She wont always win, but she is capable of winning anywhere she goes. It didn't rain on us last night. It started raining about the time we were leaving the woods. I don't think Chris is going to be that lucky tonight.

Posted by steve bankston on 11-08-2015 11:29 AM:

RAIN

Well the rain has finally moved on East this morning so we will start to dry out some. No big rain chances this week so should be some good hunting. LSU got beat last night by Alabama with a score of 30 to 16. Alabama looked tough. MR. Jack sounds like Ginn came close to getting her a win to GR. Nt. She will get them I have no doubt. As I was watching that game last night and listening to the rain come down I was thinking of her and Chris and hoping it was going their way. I will give you a call this week and we will get together and run the 2 mile bandit and see if we can get a look at him.

BO AND BAM BAM

Took BO and Bam tonight to Haunted House Bottom. Bam made every step with BO and they struck at 500yds and BO moved the track a couple hundred up the swamp and treed at 721yds. Bam treed a little but wasn't treeing time I got there but was at the tree. I caught him up and hooked him back and hooked BO back to another tree, found the big coon and put 2 in him and out he came. Hit the ground with a little left and went by Bam wobbling. Bam went nuts so I cut him and he caught him quick but let go pretty quick and bayed. I cut BO to finish business then hooked him back and worked with Bam some then we came home. This pup has the GIDDY UP I was hoping they would and I sure am loving what I'm seeing so far. I will hunt him one drop once a week with BO and one drop a few nights later by himself. We will do this rotation until he can get it done on an easy coon by himself fairly consistent then he will be hunted alone. Never started taking one at night this young and don't want to mess this pup up but can't let him out in the day because he hits the woods and there are a lot of deer stay close to this house and it would only be a matter of time before he was bumping them and liking it. So he will get his fun at night a little at the time. He never babbled once and stayed right with BO. That's why I like BO so much. He don't blow through the country but hunts down the creek or slough you send him or hunting through the wood lot. Fast enough for me but not so fast a determined pup can't hang with him. They went through a lot of swamp water and he never shook Bam. Swimming in the summer with these pups pays off come hunting time. He will be 5 months old this Friday. Not bad for a pup!
