Look good

The dogs look good Mark and Jeff seems to be holding up OK. That's a great picture of him and the cat way up in that tree and the mountain as a backdrop...good stuff.

It's good to see Maggie getting with the program, I would think that once she gets used to the excitement around a tree and settles in and focuses on the cat, she's going to be a good one. She has good tree instincts and a lot of intensity so a few repetitions will make a good hound out of her. She's got the good rigging to stand those long chases and deep snow so it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

We're getting ready for a blast of snow and cold weather over the next few days and from what I'm hearing, there are a few cats showing up in northern and western Wisconsin these days so...who knows, maybe we'll tree one too

I sure enjoy the pictures and that's a good looking bunch of Red dogs...it's good to see another generation or two getting with the program. It will be interesting to see how Cuz develops, I think he's going to be a good one for a long time to come...eh?

hey Tom we took Reba out last night in the snow to the Brillion Wildlife area. Rage, Ipod, & Rip got treed 1.1 miles in from the truck. They threw young Reba out of pocket and when we finally got out to the truck we drove back around and followed her tracks down the road in the snow to the nearest farm where she was curled up on the front porch. It was kind of cute. She is a looker. At least she's smart enough to backtrack to the truck when she gets lost.

Posted by topdog on 12-11-2010 12:07 AM:

Reba..

It is kind of funny...considering that she's never seen snow before, I suppose she figured there had to be something wrong with that picture. She's got a great disposition and is a pistol I think so I'd guess that on a good track or at least one she can handle on ground she can handle, she'll probably be in the mix track and tree. I don't know that for a fact but when they've got her outgoing kind of mind set, it usually doesn't take much to get the gears turning.

It's really too bad that winter has decided to set in the way it's going to do here over the next few days but...what the heck...we'll just wait it out like we always do and spring is just around the corner.

Come to think about it...that was a pretty rough crew to toss her out with...lots of "go huntin'" in that crew...

Nice...

Great pictures Buck...the dogs must have known they were in front of the camera...

I noticed a few spots in the picture where it looked like snow on the ground...if you're feeling bad about that...take a look at these pictures and you'll feel a lot better about it

Winter wonderland????

We had about 8" of snow on the ground already and this storm is expected to dump another 10-14" or more on top so we're shut down for the moment. The wind is blowing 20-30 MPH and the temperature will drop to below zero by tomorrow morning...ahhhhhh...winter in Wisconsin.

Good luck with your hunting, think of me when you guys are treeing those coons...I'll be with you in spirit...that's for sure.

You could use the same picture here, but you wouldn't see your shed it's snowing that hard right now. Wind is picking up and with the falling temps--we're going to hit -35 wind chills and lower tonight. Cleaned out all the dog boxes last night and gave them a good 2 to 3 inches of wood shaving and than fill them with good wild hay so they should be ready for what's coming this weekend.
Hope you got a good blend of fuel in them chick trucks for next week??? I filled the live haul and feed trucks with a 40/60 blend + an additive so they should make it down to -40. Been out there myself in the 70's and nothing worst than to have one jell and they guy that bought the fuel is home in a nice warm bed and your out there with no heat.
I suppose you've got the fireplace going, a bottle of wine being chill and you and the little lady going to watch a movie this afternoon??
Take care and only 13 more days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O T

Brrrrr! It got all of the way down to 35 here last night and is only going to get up to 55 today. We only treed 2 last night. I wish that I was still in Arkansas. Fuel blend??? Jell??? What does all of that mean? Are you talking some kind of foreign language?

Richard ---

Just a true meaning of "cold nose" !!

Just got off the phone with Mr. Ron Erickson of KS, he called from the Battle of the Breeds in OK. Said he had a really fun hunt last night and was getting ready for the Show. Said he's going to give it another try tonight.

Said he got to hunt with a "Spotted" hound that the guy paid $50,000.00 for and said he treed really good on a "slick tail" last night---said he won't feel to bad anymore with one of his does it next time.

55 degrees ??? Maybe we'll see that next May, but as we say up here----"She's making ice."

Snow....................

I just got in from taking the drifts down a bit and it's as bad as it can get right now...it's snowing so hard that I couldn't see the shed like I could this morning but at least I've got it opened up a little bit so if we had an emergency, we could at least make the hard road and get it aimed down the hill. The wind is howling and the snow going sideways and it's thick and looking like it's going to hang on for a few more hours at least.

Jell? Blend? Geez Richard...you've gotta spend more time in the north so you can learn the language...when it gets down in the 20-30 below zero range, it will jell up diesel fuel like pudding so it won't flow...we gotta put additives in it just to keep it from freezing solid...it sure won't be any fun to be out on the road when it's that cold and then have your engine quit...eh?

It's not so bad if a person stays out of the wind and dresses for the cold...nothing new...same old crap...different year.

When you're out there treeing those coons...think of me and enjoy doing what you're doing...you could be in the middle of something worse...

Looks like winter hit southern Iowa today. Got our first tracking snow this morning. Just got the ground white and that is it. We got the wind though. lol Had a nice hunt last night. Griz treed one right out of the box. Had to drive the Gator about 50 yards to the tree. Clifford is shaping up nicely. He is not machine gun treeing, but he is treeing. Griz put the second one up on down the wood ditch and got it. Turned them on and they went on down to Fox River and went across. I called Griz back, because the Gator couldn't go through the brush and across the creek. lol He came back and I loaded him and waited for Clifford and my young Leopard to decide to look me up. Clifford opened and barked a few times before he had a questioning locate and then the other youngun backed him. Was able to cross on the ice without breaking. At first, I thought they were slicking, but upon closer inspection, it was down in a crotch as tight as it could get. Going to be pretty cold for a few days, so it looks like we're laid up for now.

Sounds like a decent hunt Tim, at least you're still able to get out and about...

We're shut down for maybe the season after this storm, it's dumping a lot of snow and it's blowing hard so it makes it just about impossible to get around the woods because of how it drifts into the edges. We'll see what the final tally is but I'm thinking it's going to be 16-18" before it's done and on top of the 8" we already had, it will make it pretty hard for shot legged guys like me to get around and even harder for the dogs. We'll need real warm weather for several days to knock it down to where we could even think about getting out but...never know how the season can change these days.

I hope it doesn't get too miserable for you folks down there, you've still got a lot of season left to go if the weather holds.

It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner and then the New Year...winter will be done and spring on the horizon before we know it...eh?

Well, winter finally hit here in Tennessee tonight. It is supposed to get down to 20 degrees tonight. There is a blinding snowstorm right now. I took Tom out by himself in his first snow. It didn't seem to faze him as he treed one in about 30 min. I took a couple of pictures but everything was real blurry because of the snow. The weatherman said that we should get about 1/4 inch of snow tonight and that it will not get above 35 degrees tomorrow. Oh well, I have plenty of firewood and my wife went to the grocery store today. It looks like I will have to lay in until all of this snow melts (about 2 days).

Weather

Hey Tom,

Not getting to hunt much,to much snow and ice.
Got to hunt pups last fri. night they got a hold of a couple
that they helped run and tree on. Took some pics but they
were s------y so i didnt bother putting them on here. They
are all three going with the dogs, running tracks and locating
the tree and treeing some. Almost 8mo. now, so i guess they
are doing pretty good.

Tim

Pups

Hey Tim, it sounds like those pups are getting with the program. You can't really ask too much more from pups that age so I'd say you've got some nice prospects there.

Ice and snow...tell me about it...we got 22" of snow with 30 MPH wind and then cold...15 below zero this morning and with wind making it feel like 30 below zero. It's supposed to be 20 below zero tomorrow morning but at least not much wind so not so bad. I had 3-5' drifts right down the middle of the driveway and all around the house so it's going to take a bit before we're dug out completely...that's for sure. Oh well...it's winter so I guess we'll have to make the best of it for a few months yet and then things will be lookin' up again.

I don't mind laying up dogs for awhile when it's like this. One of the hardest things for folks to do is to wait for pups to mature and grow up a little bit...winter in Wisconsin helps us with that. When spring breaks again, these pups will be ready for the final stage and then the woods so it's something to look forward too. Every one of them is looking good now, fat and sassy and a good, heavy winter coat to keep them warm.

Take care, enjoy the good days when they come back...I'm sure you'll see some good hunting yet this winter.

"""Waiting"""", tell me about it!!! What is the difference between 15 below zero and 30 below zero? At what point do they quit counting and say it's just too darn cold?

Posted by topdog on 12-14-2010 11:30 PM:

Cold is cold...

Yep, doesn't much matter if it's 20 below zero or 30 below zero...once your froze dead...dead is dead...eh?

It was 27 below zero this morning on the way to work and warmed up to 7 above today. Not quite so cold tomorrow morning and a little warmer during the days after that so...things are looking up.

What is it like at 27-30 below zero? When you spit...it bounces when it hits the ground and when you take a deep breath in through your nose...it freezes shut in a snap...that pretty much sums it up...

What the heck...there's lots to do when it's like that...like...stay warm, stay inside and...stay warm...or...cut wood and then...stay warm...

Up side :)

This weather does have its upside though...No disrespect intended to the really nice Bulgarian born DirecTV guy who came to check my system...but he sure brought a smile to my face the other day...

He was a really nice young man who spoke pretty good English but with that strong foreign accent...he needed to get some equipment out of his van and I was plowing so stopped to help if I could...as he walked towards his van...in his really nice...slick bottom work boots...he made kind of a two step slip but steadied himself after a bit of arm swinging...he took another step and another wild gyration of motion and...once again steady...kinda...one more step towards the van and one arm swung one way, the other the other way and next thing you know...his feet were looking down at his face and he landed with an unceremonious thud...right there at the back of his van. He looked around and of course, I was standing right there...trying to choke back wild laughter...without much success but he scrambled to his feet and said..."I'm good" and went about his business. He slipped and slid his way back to the house so I followed him in to see what else he was going to do. He was scratching his head a bit trying to figure out the problem and then...I could see a revelation on his face and he said "I know what the problem is". At that point he started explaining to me in a combination of Bulgarian and English and the best I could make of it was that he needed to do something to the dish. At this point, I was already trembling in my gut...in anticipation of what was going to happen next. You have to understand that my driveway is about 30' up from a steep bank leading down to my yard and my drain field...which is where my dish is mounted on its own little pole. His footwear...like I said...was fit for walking on floors and not on ice and snow...the bottoms were slicker than a possum's tail. Anyway, I watched as he started down the bank paying no heed whatsoever to the fact that I had pushed about 20' of snow over the edge. He waded in and immediately sunk to his arm pits but...luckily for him...he had some momentum heading down the hill. After a couple of tense moments, he landed safely in about 2 feet of snow at the bottom of the hill, by this time completely covered in snow...right up to the collar on his DirecTV jacket...which was a fine looking set of winter gear...just like his boots. I couldn't take it anymore by this time and I was laughing out loud and just about hysterically because he had left the piece he needed to change sitting on the back of the van. At this point, it finally dawned on him that he had to climb back up that bank...through all the snow...in his slick bottom boots and even at that distance...I could see the realization set in. With a little shake of his head...he started back up. Of course, he figured the best way up had to be the way he came down...completely ignoring the fact that if he simply walked out the bottom to the driveway, he could at least walk on level ground with no snow, back to his van...although a bit longer of a walk. Anyway, I was leaning against the side of the window at this point because I didn't think I could stand all bent over with laughter like I was...He was literally on his hands and knees crawling back up that hill and his nice black...long hair was wearing the snow like a stocking cap held up by the collar on his nice DirecTV jacket He made it up to his truck and after a few minutes of rest...just like the trooper he was, he headed back down the bank to finish his task, slipping...sliding, falling, crawling and eventually and after several minutes...back up he came. He came in the house to finish testing and set up and I was trying my hardest to hide the tears running down my face from laughter and then...with the most serious of expressions he asked "how in the heck do you get out of that valley" I choked back more giggles and asked him...what valley? He pointed out the window at the bottom of the bank where the dish was and said "that valley". I pointed to his boots and asked to see the grips he had on that fine pair of work boots and he then lifted a leg and looked at the bottom of his boots and I did the same. I pointed to the slick bottoms he was wearing and the heavy lugs on my hunting boots and told him...you gotta do a better job of gearing up if you're gonna fix TVs in Wisconsin son...he looked at me for a moment...shook his head and went about his business.

Now...I try to be a respectful person and treat everyone as right as I can...but that was just about the funniest thing I had ever seen.....and he was Bulgarian to boot....emmigrated here when he was 20...what are the odds of something like that happening to an old country boy like me? I must have done something right because it sure made my entire week...

I just had to share it...dam...it was funny.

my latest tale

This one we treed this weekend.I was not going to go because I have a herniated disc in my back and thought I shouldn’t press my luck anymore than I had.but I could not sleep and went for a ride and cut this track. My friend was looking for a tom for his son so we hooked up before daylight. We had a few more buddies with so we had quite a pile of dogs even some off colored dogs. They took the track a short way and jumped the cat out of an old mine.We took the stairs of the mine just about to the tree.Congrats to Regan on his lion.
