Looks and sounds like Bo is right back on top. Maybe you can find Rocket while Bo is so revved up.
ROCKET the RACOON
Chris, Mason wanted me to post this picture of Rocket the Racoon from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Now you know why Bo has such a tough time in Black Branch Swamp chasing Rocket!
I saw Wolf on Facebook and he sure was looking and sounding good!

STEVE I ENJOY READING ABOUT ALL YOUR HUNTS AND ADVENTURES , AND SEE THE PICS AND VIDS OF YOUR DOGS
YOU SURE HAVE SOME WILDERNESS DOWN THERE HOPE 2016 IS YOUR BEST YEAR EVER , AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOUR MOM . GOOD HUNTIN
Bam
Thanks Terry, I enjoy reading your thread also. That Lightning pup sure looks and sounds great! Looks like that cross is really going to click. Bam is just as natural as you could ask for. Friendly pup but he ain't looking to make friends with me. Just open that kennel gate and see how long he hangs around wanting to be petted, none. That pup was born with one thing on his mind, Go Hunting. Never seen one so young be so serious and all business like. Hard not to hunt him Every night, have to reign myself in. Thanks for the Prayers for Mom. She is still in hospital and starting to have complications from the surgery. They waiting on the final report on her cancer but they thinking it is only stage 2 and very curable so praying that's true. Happy New Year to you and wishing you the Best in 2016 also.
Took Bam tonight to Haunted House Bottom where I have a feeder but nothing is hitting it. Looks like squirrels or rats are eating a little but that's it. He didn't strike on the feeder but went on down the creek and struck at 285yds and bumped around on a track but couldn't do anything with it. Had traps set the past 3 nights trying to catch coon to cut after dark and let him get some more trailing on a good track but not a one was tripped all weekend. No possums but no coon either. I'm carrying the live traps to work. We by a lake and big swamp and coon tracks everywhere. I'm gonna bring home some of those Louisiana Swamp Runners for Bam to chase. Deer season will be over soon and I can get him in the better places I have so maybe we can get after some good tracks.
Mason is here again tonight and I showed him the short video of Bo with that first coon last night and when my light hit the trunk of that big tree he said, " Paw Paw why didn't you take your Ax and chop it down like the boy did in that movie Where The Red fern Grows? " I told him that I wasn't born during the time of the Ax, I was born during the time of the Rifle! Good Hunting!

It's no wonder Tommy and I can't find any coons to run. Somebody's been hauling 'em all to Mississippi.LOL
Trapping Coons
Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to help these pups out! lol! When Bo has to go 600 or more yards to get on a coon that's just to far for a pup just starting out so I gotta catch him a few so he has some good tracks to run or he will probably start running something easy to find and run. I ran into Sleepy on my way to work this morning and you should have seen his face when he saw those live traps in my truck. I assured him I wasn't trapping in his area catching his coon but at the Texas line. Its 15 million Illegals in our Country running free but I bet if they catch me hauling a coon back from work to my house for the pup to run they probably gonna lock me up. Using the words Restocking or Relocating probably won't work. When I cut him in Black Branch Swamp he will feel right at home, plus he won't have to worry about Gators.
I will be here at work all week so will not get to hunt this week at all. Having trouble getting some sheet pile down so gotta stay until done. Hopefully by Sunday or Monday we will wrap it up then I will get back to hunting and the next 6 jobs we have to do are in Baton Rogue or the surrounding area and that's only 1 1/2 hours from the house. To some that sounds like a long drive one way to work but for me anything 2 hours or less one way is just a hop and a skip.

I'm glad you like him and hope Bogey makes you a good one, When Bo was 7 weeks old and we brought him home a few days later I started cutting the grass and he came at the mower bawling at it and kept getting so close I had to go put him up. And I had the blades on so it was making plenty racket. He was as bold a pup as I have ever seen. Scared of nothing.

MASON GIVING
I know I have posted the picture of Mason getting the final 4 autographs at Miami back in November but today he just give his Teacher at School her Christmas present and it was one of these posters that we got autographed. When he had told her he was going to the Championship Race she told him that it was Jeff Gordons last race and if he could please get her his autograph. Well Mason being the Jimmie Johnson fan he is looked up at her and said, " Jeff Gordon?! What about Jimmie Johnson! " She said the way he said it so serious like he couldn't believe she was worried about a Jeff Gordon when there was Jimmie to cheer for! All 3 of us got a poster and had the final 4 sign it. I told Beverly that we were getting them framed and we would have one and Mason have one and that it would be a great Christmas Gift to let Mason give his teacher one who is a huge Jeff Gordon fan. So we had one framed for her and the top picture of Mason waiting on Jeff to sign it and Mason give those to her in class today. I'm so proud of my little Buddy as you can see the pride on his face waiting on her to open it. He loves Giving Gifts more than Receiving them and has such a good heart. May that stay with him always.

WORK WORK WORK
Picture of our job and my tripod setting out in the edge of the lake giving them line on the sheet pile we are driving. Hoping to be done by Saturday but the Crane quit swinging to the right this evening so have mechanic coming in the morning to take a look. Set my live trap last night but it stormed all night and didn't catch one so try to catch a couple tonight. We hit a pocket of Methane Gas today that boiled the water for 15 minutes and our water that was a foot deep became 4' quick as the sand blew out into the lake. Thought for a minute we had ruptured a gas pipe line but thank goodness that wasn't the case. Missing my hounds bad and can't wait to get off this job and get back to hunting.

YOUNG GUNS
Mason was over tonight and he said I WASN'T going hunting without him! So I loaded up the two Young Guns, Mason and Bam. Mason rode in the truck with Beverly while I was on the 4 wheeler until we got to the Haunted House Bottom then Mason got on with me and rode the couple hundred yards into the woods to the turnout spot while Beverly waited at the truck. We cut Bam and he opened one time at 90yds then got out to 257yds and fell treed. No locate just bawling. I knew it didn't sound quite right but off we went into the swamp. It was pretty bad for over a 100yds and Mason lost his boot in the mud as you can see in the picture. We got it back on and a few minutes after that we flushed some turkeys out of the trees and that was cool for Mason to hear the first time. This boy is tough and sure ain't scared of the dark. We got on in there and Bam hushed just as we got to him and was on side of a hill that rose up out of the swamp sniffing around but I found what he had been baying about. Fresh digging at a Dillar hole. Last time I caught him at a hole we went to school a little bit so I think he knew when he saw my light he better quit. I hooked him up and we slowly made our way out of there. Mason had a blast and Beverly said she heard all about the hunt on the way home. He told her, " Me Me, you wouldn't have made it in that Serious Swamp and Bam Bam was in a Stupid Hole! " If you have never carried a 5 year old to a swamp coon hunting with a 6 month old pup you haven't fully lived. It will be an Adventure you will never forget, A Great Adventure! Good Hunting!

Paw Paw
My grandson is seven months old, my daughter has moved back in her house, her husband went back to Georgia he is in the Army he got his orders Thursday he is going to Italy for nine months, he going to miss his first steps, the main thing is to come home safe, she is going to finish her college up, I really look up to you, that you spend a lot of time with your grandson, he will always remember his boot stuck in mud hole, and tell all his friends about it lol.. be safe and take care....
Good stuff, Steve. I was planning to take Wolf to his first competition hunt tonight, but the wind was howling so I stayed home, figuring the coons would be layed up and not much happening but Wolf picking up bad habits with me unable to handle him. I hunted him here and tried to give him a few lessons.
Grandkids
Roger, I hope the 9 months for your Son In Law goes by quickly and safely for him. Take those pictures of those Grandkids and the hounds or pups. Mason and I went back on my thread last night looking at pictures of him and Bo from the beginning and its amazing how fast they grow. Made me feel Real Old!, lol!
Chris, the wind was howling here too. Right after Mason and I got Bam out of the woods the other night it started howling. I was going to take Bo out but after it went to blowing about 25mph I changed my mind. Glad to hear Wolf is clicking. I knew the way you talked of him over the past year that he sounded like he was going to make you a good one.
I took my 4 wheeler this morning back to the shop to have that part put on for the 4 wheel drive and to get 4 new tires. The ones on it came with it when I bought it new 8 years ago and they were looking rough. I also bit the bullet and ordered me a new Flood Light for my Jet Boat before I get killed on the river trying to miss all the logs with the lights I had rigged up. This new light is a LED Go Light Remote Controlled that goes in the stanchion hole up front. Its 2,600 Lumens so it should Light the World Up! For 750 bucks it better! I'm going to glue some Velcro to the back of the remote and on top of my center console to right of and in front of steering wheel. That way if I need to adjust it up or down, left or right its just a push of the button away. Out of over 12,000 reviews it has a 9.1 rating out of 10 so it should be nice. 3 day shipping so I will know before the weekends out how I like it.

You can get a cree led light bar for $37 bucks on ebay ( 20 inch). Ive mounted a few of them on boats, usually wire in a plug so I can take it out.. Super bright. I've got a 18' welded aluminum w 60 mercury 4 stroke w/ jet foot- That dang jet foot clogs up with leaves and junk.. How do you keep that from happening? I love it for summer on my shallow rocky river, but for winter I use a regular foot

LIGHT
Casey that's kind of what I have now. It's not a bar but two round cree mounted side by side but not near bright enough. I have them mounted on a sinker cypress box I built that slips over the trolling motor plate up front and I plug it in to the spot for the trolling motor. I have a regular house light switch wired in top of box that I turn it on and off with. To dim for my older eyes! As for leaves as long as I stay away from the shallow dead water I'm good as we have enough current in the river that's not a problem except where water isn't moving. Logs are my problem but I usually keep a trail cut in the river where the boat runs but when it floods that all changes as it moves stuff around and more trees cave off into the river and the channel changes. You just have to get the saw out again and open it back up. Pebbles is doing good and growing. Still full of puppy and not ready to fool with yet but in a few months she should be. She is very loud and flies around the yard and woods. Hope she has a nose to match her speed, if so she will be super fast on track. Take Care.

BACK TO HUNTING!!!
These two sunrise pictures I took on our job at the Texas line yesterday morning and this morning. We finished driving the sheet pile today so no more having to stay over there in a hotel worrying with work. Might have to go back a time or two and give the cap crew grade but that won't take an hour and I can drive right back home. My light came in today for the Jet Boat and she is sitting in the river waiting on me to load Bo and Bam. Hunting stories coming soon!

ADVENTURE
What a night! Bo, Bam and I had quite an action packed night. Not all good action but these two hounds was making things happen. Went down river in the Jet Boat with the new light and it's nice. Lot better than the other I had rigged up. Cut them on west side of river first and it wasn't long and Bam was baying in a hole in the ground. I stopped at 50yds from him and cut out my light and used the collar to make him quit it. Bo had struck about 400 deep and got treed quick so I went on to him after looking at Garmin to make sure Bam had left hole and was moving on. Bo had a coon in a medium size water oak and it was looking at me coming in and was easy to find. When they are easy to find it is usually a sow so I left her alone and sent Bo on deeper. Bam was a couple hundred yards back behind me and I could tell he had his head in a hole again. I eased back his way and when I was sure I was right I used the collar again to make him leave it. He hunted around awhile without striking and when he came close I hooked him up and sat down by a big tree and listened to Bo start working a track over 500yds up river. He moved it over a quarter mile, located up once a few quivering bawls but moved on. When he turned south west going away from the river and getting pretty deep I took Bam back to the boat and we headed up river. I had brought a 5 gallon bucket full of dog feed to put in feeder on east side, across the river from Bo so I stopped to fill it up and when I did I cut Bam loose. About time I filled the feeder Bam struck 342yds further east from the river and started moving upriver and Bo fell treed Way to the west on other side of river. I took boat a quarter mile upriver and puled in on Bo's side and he was straight in 737yds treed. Bam was still bumping around trailing so I took off to Bo. I had went almost half way and Bam fell treed and lit it up. I listened for a few minutes thinking it might be another hole but after a while I had no doubt this was a tree not a hole. So there I stood in the swamp torn between my hounds knowing Bo would stay but wanting to go back to Bam but thinking he probably wouldn't stay hooked long enough for me to get back to boat and get back down river and get in to him. So I just listened to both of them hammer it for 15 minutes and didn't move. Bam never slacked up, not once. I finally broke and took off back to the boat. At the boat Bam was still 467yds from me on other side of river. I blasted out of there, down the river a little, then beached it and tied it up and off I ran through the river birch bottom headed to my pup. Boy he was sounding good, to good. You know what they say when it sounds to good to be true! He is in the top picture that I took coming in then looked on up the tree and there sat a Big, Fat..... Possum! My heart just dropped but proud he treed and stayed hooked a good 30 minutes. I just snapped him up and back to the boat and back upriver we went. Bo was still blowing the top out. Bam and I made our way slowly to him as it was bad thick in places and beaver ponds all over we had to keep hunting away around the deep water. Finally got to him and he was treed on a water oak in a bad thicket and I didn't think I had a chance to find him but I finally did and it took 4 solid hits to dislodge him and he was full of fight when this monster hit the ground. The picture don't do him justice, he is without a doubt the biggest coon I have ever treed around here. Looked dang near as big as that one that I knocked out in Illinois to Mr. Jacks hound. Bo had fun for a minute and I let my possum treeing pup get a little then we headed out of there. I thought after falling 3 times, my bump cap liner coming unsnapped when it flew off my head, getting the end of gun barrel plugged with mud, tore half my sleeve off a new flannel shirt on saw briars, caught bad muscle cramps in both legs, after All that getting back to the boat I thought I had seen the worse until I saw the river. It was after 11pm and the Fog was thick over the water and about 6' high. The trip back with that bright new light reflecting back off that fog until it just looked like a white out was an Adventure in itself. I got home by shining my hunting light on the bank to my right and knowing where I was and adjusting my steering to hopefully put me in my channel where I needed to run. I only bumped one log lightly with the backend of the boat but I was lucky. Fog was awful and I wouldn't want to have to try that run again. I have to run 3/4 throttle to be planned out so I can make it through all the shallows . I'm sitting here typing this still drinking pickle juice hoping when I go to bed the cramps don't catch me again. But I bet me and ole Possum tree'er will be after them again tonight! Good Hunting!

Training pups
Steve aint it Just the most fun in the world training pups. He trees in a hole a couple of times and you are a long way from him and up and across the river when he does tree and you figuring that if you go back to him, he probably wont stay until you get there and at the pups age, he probably shouldn't. You decide to go back to him and push yourself to hard to get there, tear your clothes and plug up the barrel of your gun in the process and you get there and he's got a possum. Ain't it just more fun than you can stand. AAAAH but one day soon If that's the right kind of pup and sounds like it is, there will be a coon in that tree and that'll make it all worth it. Take care Steve, I'm going to call you one day to help me run that 2 hr. coon. I think I ran him again last night, but he ran a different route.
Sounds like
Sounds like you fellas are still after it. And doing good! I haven't been for a while cant get anybody to help me chase this trash I got. My handler went back to school. But he is about to be a runaway, he said he was going this weekend regardless. Ha Ha its in the blood! Ed

Steve u need to come my way next week I got a place u can break him in less than 50 yards with out him ever making it to a hole . He will see enough of them she'll u may not need to shock him. Or we may need to do some swapping out for a week. Fly has seen so many the other night she just think it's just part of the woods. Just hasn't been around enough deer is what I'm afraid of even though she hasn't done nothing wrong yet but she acts like she is ready to go.

COON HUNTING AND POSSUMS
Mr. Jack there was a saying Mr. Frank Erwin would use in a situation like I had going on last night. He would always say, " Coon Hunters Must Love Misery! " One of the smartest things he ever said and I could almost hear him saying it last night when I staggered into Bams tree gasping for breath and my tongue hanging out and my back hurting from busting my tail coming down the bank in a hurry to get in that boat. I had Beverly take a couple pictures of what I looked like when I got home and I will post them just to show that Mr. Frank hit the nail on the head with that saying.
Mr. Ed that boy has the fever bad so he probably could miss a little school time to time until he gets well! I hope as Mason gets older he still loves it. We have to deal with pups trashing and our Grandchildren when they get the right age and start getting side tracked by those girls, lol!
Sleepy I'm glad Fly is coming around for you. That video you sent of her sounded a lot like Pebbles. Loud, deep male dog mouth. I'm just working on Bam a little for putting his head in a hole first. I don't want to do anything to him at this age around a tree even if it is a possum. Just snap him up and leave. He tree a dozen coons and he's broke from holes then I will worry about the possums.
I just got home from picking up my 4 wheeler so I'm fixed up with new tires and 4 wheel drive has a new part. As much as it cost I need to start walking everywhere I hunt. Those ITP Mud Lite Tires for it cost as much as truck tires. Looks like rain tonight but hoping it holds off until midnight or later so Bo and I can tree a couple more. Me and him got to whip ourselves into shape for the Winter Classic coming up.

Steve,
I started coon hunting, (as I called it back then) when I was around 13 or 14. I didn’t have anyone to teach me, just me and a friend or two. We hunted a little yellow dog named Skip, that would run a rabbit, and tree possums. But every now and then he would tree a coon. Treeing a coon was like killing a trophy buck. But we had so much fun with him. Competition hunting made treeing possums no more. (JMO) But there is a lot worse things than a puppy treeing possums. I love to see a puppy get on a tree. For a 6 month old pup Bam is sounding good.
