FOG

This is a snapshot picture from a video I tried to make on the boat ride home in the fog but where I clipped my phone to me had it cocked at a bad angle as you can tell and video wasn't worth posting. But this picture gives you an idea of how heavy the fog was on the mile long ride back to the house. Looks like a wall of smoke in front of the light.

Tommy that's why I will 4 ever be a pleasure hunter at heart. Things that would drive you nuts in a competition hunt you can just shrug your shoulders and say oh well when your pleasure hunting. One thing about the hounds today versus yesterday. Very seldom do you sit around half the night waiting on something to happen. Hounds today are gonna make things exciting one way or another. I remember a few I had long ago I would have been proud for them to tree a Possum just so I could get my hands on them and go home after sitting in the dark listening to them Boo Hoo around on a track for an hour and go nowhere. Drove me crazy.

My post was suppose to say, "Competition hunting made treeing possums no more FUN." I don't like it now but back then, it sure was fun.

Possums

I agree. I don't mind a pup just getting started treeing one or a hound under 18 months treeing one from time to time. But after they are a good, solid coon tree'er they better leave those possums alone! Ole Bonnie treed enough all her life to last me a lifetime! Could not break her so just finally excepted that she was going to tree one every now and then and after I did that hunting became fun again and when she treed one I would just send her on without all the whipping and cussing.

SAWMILLING

Didn't get to hunt last night because a steady rain moved in right before dark and lasted most the night. So today feeling very rested I hooked to the sawmill and brought it from the shop over here to the River and set it up and started sawmilling the Sinker Cypress I pulled out of the river this past Summer and Fall. You can see my two helpers in the pictures, lol! Blade ain't scared of anything, he's just like his Daddy Bo. I fired up the sawmill and when I went to cutting he just walks along beside me trying to catch the saw dust and chips coming out the discharge chute. I cut one big one up and will stack in the shop tomorrow and cut another. Bo and I will hit Black Branch Swamp tonight and see if we can't get after Rocket The Racoon.

I agree with the pup teeing possums as a pup but going into holes will drive me crazy.

Took a day off to go squriel hunting with my boss and a salesman from the job took ace along for the walk since he needs to stretch out the legs we treed 8 kill 5 and we did a lot of shooting and ace is not gun shy and by the third one to hit the ground he was hunting and checking trees.
By the time he get big enough to hunt and I kill some coons on him it won't be long this pup will be a good dog
I won't be taking him on anymore hunts cause he will hunt what he is around.

WINTER CLASSIC

I looked at the entry list for the Winter Classic and Bo and I aren't on it. I called UKC and Corey is working on it but I don't think Bo will get to hunt. It's been over a month and maybe closer to two that I had went online and entered all my info but couldn't find a enter or submit prompt to click so I called the next day and talked to a lady about it and she said she could do it over the phone so we did and I give her my debit card number and she said I would be mailed confirmation before the hunt. I never thought another thing about it until I saw my name not on there. Well I have dug out my bank statements from Oct., Nov., and Dec. and there is No 70 dollar charge from UKC on them. Only thing I can figure is sometimes with certain places a debit card won't work for security reasons. When I booked the cabin on Sardis lake for this hunt I had to call my bank and have them loosen the security because the card was declined when I tried to book. I called them right back after I called my bank and it went. Same thing with Nascar Tickets I buy, have to call the bank first. So what I think happened is she took my info down and when she put it all in the computer and ran my card it declined it and they didn't call and let me know so I could call my bank. Beverly remembers all this also or I would think I was starting to lose my mind. I don't blame UKC, I should have followed up on this BEFORE the deadline to enter was past. I never look at my bank statements unless I think my checking balance doesn't seem right. I'm just sick about this. I really enjoyed hunting in that area last year as we were in some nice woods both nights and got in some coons Saturday night where the hound that one my cast won first place and finished to Nt. Ch. Corey is checking phone records to see when I called and will call me back but since I have no charge to my account me and Bo are out. Bummer.

ROCKET WINS AGAIN!

Picture of Tramp 11 in top picture and him, Mr. Jack and Bo in the bottom picture. Mr. Jack came over and we ate some supper out by the bonfire area that Beverly had fixed us then we headed to Black Branch Swamp to see if Rocket The Racoon was stirring. Bo blew up on the back of the 4 wheeler when we had just got started into the swamp and we cut them loose. I don't like to in that area because of 6' high and tight net wire hog fence but Bo made it sound like they would tree him quick so he talked me into cutting them. They did just what I feared, took him to the net wire 200yds away and hung up on the fence right beside a big deer feeder. We caught them up and moved on down the swamp and cut them again. They struck a track and trailed it right back to the deer feeder and net wire fence over 500yds away so back we went and rounded them up again. Took them even further this time and cut them one more time. They struck at a little over 400yds and opened a few times moving it North West. Mr. Jack noticed Tramp was the other way back at the net wire fence but the more we looked at it and talked about it we came to the conclusion that his collar had got pulled off somehow. So Mr. Jack went to find the collar while I road out to the little county road that the hounds were getting close to. When I got near them and killed the 4 wheeler they were right where Rockets Den Tree is by the Corner Fence Post. I feel like Rocket had made a rutting round earlier and came back home but must have just left because Bo and Tramp all of a sudden went from a trailing track to a hot track and left there screaming. They were headed right back toward Mr. Jack over 900yds away so I headed back to the swamp and caught up with him. He had found the collar right by the fence and we sat there a minute listening to those two hounds burn Rockets tail through that swamp. They were 0.75mi from us so we decided to get as close as we could. Rode all the way to the back and killed the 4 wheelers and they were burning him up at 680yds and going away. At a little over 900yds they hit the tree so we headed out to the road and went the 2 miles back up it to get closer. We were still over 600 when we ditched the 4 wheelers but we had over 400yds of it crossing a nice field so getting to them wasn't bad at all. Mr. Jack said just before we walked in to them he heard a big splash off to the side and we think Rocket tricked them by crossing out and then jumping when he saw our lights but they were blowing the top out so Bo and Tramp didn't hear the splash. Anyway Rocket sure wasn't in this tree but he dang sure went up it. No way they missed him pushing him that hard and that hot on his tail but he wins again. I told Mr. Jack I sure would hate to shoot the Legend but if they would have had him a new Legend would have to be born cause this one was coming down. But he whooped us again so the Legend of Rocket The Racoon lives on!!!

ROCKET

I was thinking the exact same thing last night Chris and when it gets decision time I probably won't do it but might rattle his cage with a few limb shots around him while squalling and try to get him to come out and run again. It sure is nice to hear a race like that.

BAM

Took Bam down the river in the Jet Boat tonight and cut him down a small drain. He struck within 100yds and went maybe 50yds and fell treed. He had a Double.... Possums. I hooked him up and led him a good ways and hooked him up and went back to the Possum tree and took care of business. If Coon are thin Possums are gonna be thinner. Went back to Bam and led him on down the drain and cut him again and right back toward the Possum tree he went. I headed his way but before I could get to him he fell treed on this big water oak about 50yds from where the possums were and he had a coon. I loved him up and let him tree about 10 minutes then brought him home. Just as I got the hounds fed up a light rain has set in here on the River Bottom. Good hunt for my pup. Coon Hound in the making.

Your right Steve, Coon Hound In The Making. Most will test your metal many times while there are in the making. I have been working two from the same cross from Gauge and Alice and boy I have had some moments of discontent, but then you just have to step back and look at all the good nights they have had compared to the very few rough nights they put you through. Maybe at my age two of the same age is a bit much but hey, I am getten it done buddy! Good luck with your young'un! We need to talk again sometime.. May go to Bluetick Days might see you there.

Lookin good!

Most folks reading this do not know how hard it is to tree a coon where you hunt. Terrain and coon population are really stack against a hound. This would be impressive with a 1 to 1and a half year old dog. Bam is 7 mo. old I believe. Great job!

ROCKET WINS AGAIN!!

Another good hunting tale to tell tonight! Took Bam down river in the Jet Boat first and cut him down that drain again. He struck at 125 and moved it out over 300yds pretty good but then bogged down. He located up a few times but didn't stick. I stayed within 100yds of him in case he treed but he never did and couldn't move it on so I caught him up and we came home and got Bo and went to Black Branch Swamp. About the same spot Bo struck off the 4 wheeler the other night Bam and Bo struck together and just came unglued so I cut'em. Bo went right as you can see in the picture the Blue Line and Bam went Left he is the Green Line. Where you see he is at in picture that was a little over 200yds and he was trying to find away through that hog wire. He finally did but was so far from where the coon went through the fence that on way back to pick up the trail he hit a dillar hot and ran it to a hole and he got the juice again. He quit it quick and after a bit found me and I hooked him up. Bo in the mean time had already ran his coon through the hog wire in two different spots and each time it took him a while to find away around and pick it back up. The coon took him in the Bad Stuff and that slowed him even more. Bam and I had been setting listening to him open here and there for a while and he was in a 20acre bad spot and I could tell on the Garmin he was looking for the tree. I said a Small Prayer as I was getting cold and have to work tomorrow. I said, " Lord Please put him on a tree, Wrong or Right! " I no sooner said it than he located and locked it down. I looked up at the sky and said my Thanks and Bam and I took off to him. He was on a Magnolia that you see in the picture. That Picture is the scene of the crime where Bam got attacked. The green broke magnolia limb and tore up ground are the evidence. Bam was hooked to the pine you see left in picture. I started looking for the coon and had both hounds hooked, Bam on one side and Bo on other side of tree. It wasn't a tall Magnolia but it was wide in the top and full of leaves. I looked and squalled a bit and Bam really got to treeing good and I could tell he was winding the coon. I found a tall sapling that grew up on the outer edges of the Magnolia limbs and I grabbed it and started swinging it against those limbs and squalling at the same time. I saw his eyes for a second and knew as red as they were and as wide that it was probably Rocket! Before I could get my rifle up he quit looking and next thing I knew Bam was fighting for his life. Rocket had bailed out right on top of Bam and the fur and hair was flying a few seconds. As I ran toward Bam to kick Rocket off his head he came loose and took off running within inches of Bo stretched out screaming trying to get to him. I cut Bam loose first and as soon as he was lined out screaming away I cut Bo. Then I just sat down and listened to those two hounds I love burn his tail up in that bad, thick, Swamp. I looked up at the sky again and told the Lord Thanks again, for helping Bo choose the right tree and for the race I was listening to. Sure wish Mr. Ed, Mr. Jack and Mr. Frank could have been with me as this is what we love to hear. A young pup strung out on a mean, running coon. Rocket couldn't stay in the thicket, they were to close so he took them to the 6' tall Hog Wire Fence to get the separation he needed. Took Bo a full minute to find a way through and took Bam twice that long because that puppy don't follow NO DOG. He does his on thing. Independent as you will find. Bo got him going again but Rocket went through the fence in another spot and this time Bo couldn't find his way around and I ended up catching him but about time I did Bam had found him a spot through and was trailing Ole Rocket at a good pace. Bo and I made our way back to the 4 wheeler and I was watching the Garmin and Rocket was taking Bam just about the same route as he had took Bo when they first struck him and his Girlfriend off the 4 wheeler. So I took off down the trail to where Bo had crossed it and waited and sure enough Bam was headed my way and had really got to moving him good but it was late so I caught him off Rocket. He wasn't happy at all and when I loaded him up he just kept looking out into the dark bawling that big, echoing bawl. Bam was still mad about getting jumped on, I could see the fire in that pups eyes. But he was to far behind Rocket and would have eventually got thrown off the trail when Rocket got tired of playing with him. It was a night to remember even if we came home without firing a shot. One thing is for Sure, Rocket is a jumper. From the first time I treed him last year in the huge Turkey Pine and popped a couple shots that hit the big limb he was on and he jumped then to the other night when Mr. Jack heard a splash and then tonight. He came out of that Magnolia fast. I never saw him trying to walk down it, just jumped. Rocket The Racoon Wins Again, Good Hunting!!

Ron I hope all is good up your way. I know yaw probably neck deep in Winter right now. Come on down to Bluetick Days it will be a great time. Come hunt with me a few days before the Hunt, would love to show you and your hounds some of these swamp runners. I've already booked my cabin at John Kyle State Park on Lake Sardis. Hope to see you there, Take Care.

Tommy the Boars are Rutting and its some great races happening. I saw yaw had a two hour Bandit race the other night, sounded like a great one and wish I could have been on the tailgate listening to those 3 burn it up. Take Care.

Mr. Ed it has been tough this year getting on a good track but it seems to be getting better since they started rutting. Bam turned 7 months last week. I should be ashamed taking him as much as I do as young as he is but I ain't. That pup is more mature than some 18 month old hounds and he has one thing on his mind, Go Hunting! He likes holes in the ground to much but we working on that. No fast game yet, just Dillars, Possums and Coons. Having fun with him and as much as I can't wait to see how he will be this time next year, I'm not going to push him to hard, just have fun and try and keep him in coon. Deer season will be over soon and all the deer hunters that have feed scattered out all over won't be filling the feeders No More. Then the Coon will hit my bucket feeders more regular and Bam will get some better tracks night after night. He's going to make a good one I believe, Take Care and hope to see yaw soon!

Rocket wins again

Steve, that suresounds like another good hunt. Since I have had the opportunity to hunt over there with you and know a little about where this hunt took place, reading about it was almost like I was sitting there listening to it all with you. Ole Rocket is a fast one and a smart one. I know that he was smart enough to know which dog to jump out on. I don't think he would have fared so well if he had jumped out on Bo. I sure would like for Mr. Ed to hear that race one night. I hadn't been hunting ole Tramp much in the last couple of months and after that race the other night, he is just today started coming out of his house regularly. He was a stove up dog when we got home the other night. Good hunting steve, sounds like Bam is getting better all the time.

BAM

Thanks Guys! I took Bam by himself tonight for just one drop over at Black Branch Swamp. I had put a new feeder in there with dog food in it the other night and wanted to see if the coon had found it yet. Still don't know if the Coon have found it but a possum sure had. I cut Bam and could tell by the way he acted he smelled something but didn't open. He made a small loop then crossed the creek and let out the prettiest locate you ever heard. I eased in to him and saw the possum against the moon. Hooked him up quick and got out of there and took him back to the 4 wheeler and came back with the rifle. I thought about going down river in the boat for one more drop but decided against it because the moon is high and bright and I didn't want him to tree another possum. One thing for sure he is the fastest 7 month old pup to come treed with the greasy meat I ever had! We will get him broke from them later down the road but right now just wish I could get him in some coon thick as these possums. At the rate we going the Possums won't be thick long, lol!! Got to get up at 3am and drive to the job at the Texas line so not cutting Bo again until tomorrow night. Good Hunting!

SAWMILLING

I haven't hunted in several nights because I've been sawmilling all the Sinker Cypress logs that you see in the picture. And stacking it to dry in my shop. I have pushed myself hard this week to get done with it and I finished up at 1pm today. I'm not as young as I used to be or I could have sawmilled and stacked lumber all day and Coon Hunted half the night but these days its One or the Other. My body has aches I forgot I could get but its done. Now I can concentrate on treeing a few coon with these hounds starting tonight. Sleepy sent me a Video of his Ace pup that's out of Bo and Stormy treeing on a hung up coon and he looked and sounded good. Sleepy said the pup just hates them and that's good to hear. Hoping that pup makes him a good one. Chris is coming down to hunt some after the Winter Classic and I'm sure he will be glad that I don't have any more logs to cut, lol! We going to have fun chasing these swamp coon and taking him on a Jet Boat ride and letting him see the sights along the Bogue Chitto River. Might even squeeze in a hog hunt and quail hunt too. Got a guy that offers quail hunts with pointers and has trails and golf carts to ride in as you hunt and he said I could coon hunt his place last year and I have never even went and checked it out. Figured we could Quail hunt it in the day and get the lay of the land and come back that night and thin his coon down. I'm sure they work on those Quail eggs in the spring so he should be happy to see us thin them out.

Big Buck Down

My Son, Shane, killed this nice buck this morning just before 8am. He killed a doe yesterday. These deer are the first he has killed in almost 10 years as he don't hunt like he used to. Always working whether offshore or at home doing sandblasting or welding jobs for people. I told him a while back I used to run around like I was trying to fight fires picking up odd jobs to make every dollar I could but also wasted a lot of money. As I got older I realized life is to short to be a Workaholic and not enjoy the things you love. Better to manage your money better and cut back on things you can live without and take the extra time to enjoy life and do the things you Love. I think he might have listened to me and I'm proud for him to have the Hunting Fever Again. Tomorrow is his 32nd Birthday so this is his Birthday Buck and he said he is mounting him.

DEER MOVING

Yea I think he said 17" inside spread. I had just took the sawmill back to the shop at 9am this morning and got it set back up and as I was leaving I saw 3 Doe's watching me. Well that should have been my clue to put my rifle in my truck when I came home and hooked to the trailer with the last of the Sinker Cypress I have to unload and stack. But being busy and in a hurry to get it all done I didn't take the time to come in the house and get the .280 out of the cabinet. Got back to the shop at 10:09am and there was a huge buck where the Doe's had been and if I would have had the rifle he stood looking at me plenty long enough to have rolled him. I will be in a stand this evening because it being a Full and Rising Moon yesterday evening and 23 degrees here this morning has them on the move.

FAMILY

Your right Mr. Ed, Time has flown by it seems. Just seems like yesterday that I ran off with Shane's Mama to get married. Two scared teenagers that thought they were in love. We went to Las Vegas Nevada thinking you could do anything there but found out you both had to be 18 to get married or have your parents consent. Well since her parents had some PI's trying to track me down that wasn't going to happen so we drifted up to Spokane Washington and came back down to Missoula Montana where we stayed a couple weeks then found out we could get married in Florida if we went before a Judge and told him our story. So we did. We went through over 20 States to get hitched. That was in 83. Now here it is 2016 and tomorrow Shane turns 32 and his Son, Levi, turned a year old in Sept. As you can see in the picture he is walking around fine on the Bogue Chitto River and it won't be long and he will be following the Hounds with Me and Mason in these bad swamps. Hope yaw aren't snowed in up there to bad. It was 23 here this morning but warmed up quick and is supposed to be in the mid 70's by the end of the week. Weather is crazy this year, Winter one day then 5 days of spring then back to Winter. Take Care and hope to see yaw soon.

I remember when you and his momma came up here and stayed and hunted a while, Mr. Frank and Mrs. Barbra were along on that trip. I think that was the time you took seal beam home. Memory not that good any more. Weathers good what snow we got will be gone by the end of the week. Caleb went Saturday night treed 2 singles behind the cabin. Bright as day last one was a boar gave her good run.

Bam and Bo

Took Bam and Bo to Black Branch Swamp and decided Not to cut Bam near the feeder as there has been to many Possums feeding and hardly no sign of Coon tracks around them. So cut them a couple hundred yards up the branch from the feeder and Bo shot out of there headed North but Bam swung wide and came back by me headed to the feeder. I hollered at him but it was just wasted breath. I headed his way and got off the 4 wheeler and was walking in there when I heard him growling some in a wild cane thicket and I knew right off what he was doing. Last week when he treed that Possum in there and I brought him out and loaded him up I went back and shot the Possum and toted it 50yds or so away from the feeder and tossed it in the wild cane thicket. So I knew tonight he had found it and was wooling that stinking thing. He found out Quick that dead Possums bite harder than live ones and he took out of there and went on down the branch. Hope it did him some good. Bo meanwhile had got to 3/4 of a mile but was making a big swing and headed back in my direction and hadn't opened yet. He was North East of me about a quarter mile and finally started opening. I headed his way on the 4 wheeler and in a bit Bam came in behind me so I stopped and loaded him up. Bo was treed then so I rode on close to him and walked the last little bit. He was treed on a big beech and had a big coon laid in the first big fork looking at me when I walked in. Since its so hard to strike a coon in this swamp this year I'm not shooting any more down unless Bam does a great job so I just petted Bo up and left it to run another day. Came on home after that little hunt because I had got up at 2am and drove a little over 4 hours one way to the job today then got back home about 3:30 this evening. Getting tired so called it a night.

Mr. Ed I believe your right, I think that was the trip I brought the pup Seal Beam home. That sucker grew into a big hound with a huge mouth and I still feel today that's one I might have give up on to soon. I just couldn't get his tree switch to throw but I think some of it was my fault as I didn't know back then near as much as I Thought I did. And still don't!

Bam and Bo

Took them to Haunted House Bottom and it was a pretty sorry hunt. Lots of water and they didn't get a strike the first drop so rode in a little further and cut them again. Bo got in there a few hundred yards and started trailing and so did Bam but they went different directions. Bo ended up treeing in a lot of water and I could tell the way he was treeing he wasn't liking it and I was right, slick. About that time Bam went to baying 85yds away and when I got where I could see him he had his head in a hole so he got bit again. He came out quick and came to me so I hooked him up and headed home. Black Branch Swamp needs to drain a day or so before I go in there. On way home at least 6 deer running in a herd like to jumped on the 4 wheeler with us just before we got home. And after I fed up and came inside there was a pack of coyote's in the yard that went to howling and screaming so close I thought they were coming up on the porch. I looked out under the security light thinking I might get to roll one with my Colt AR-15 but none were that stupid to show themselves. I'm pretty sure that's what was running those deer that about ran over us as they jumped out of the woods flying across the road. They have got bad around here in the last 5 years but are really bad this year. Me and the hounds will try again tomorrow and hopefully find a good track for Bam to run. He sure does his on thing and pays Bo No attention what so ever whether he has something going or not. Coon not hitting feeders and few and far between in these swamps is making it hard on me to get Bam focused on just coon. Might keep him penned up until Sunday night when deer season ends and I can go to Bo's Bottom that we haven't hunted in over 4 months. Conditions right now just stink for trying to get him on some coon in the swamps I hunt.
