BLACK BRANCH SWAMP DOUBLE

Business picked up tonight for me and the Potlickers. Took Bo and Bam to Black Branch Swamp. Bam ended up in a hole first drop and I turned the heat up and got him out Quick. He went on hunting instead of coming back in to me so that was a good thing. Bo by then had struck at almost 500yds but was working his way back toward me and to the left. Bam struck out in front of me and to my right about time Bo came treed. I rode 4 wheeler and got within 50yds of him. He was treed on this double and blowing the top out. They are facing each other and looked like they were hugging. I hooked him up and took some pictures and a video I will post later. Bam ended up trailing within 30yds of us and kept on going on his track with Bo treeing every breath. I took Bo back to 4 wheeler and we rode to within 200yds of Bam and I sent Bo to check him. Bo went to him but never opened and made a big loop and went back to the tree with the double. They were in a small tree that forked off a big trunk that was hollow and had sheared off about 15' up. Well, after we had left they left that little tree and when he got back there he left on a red hot track screaming through that swamp. Bam's track had played out on him and I sure wish he would have picked up and went to Bo but he didn't. Really need him on some good tracks like that. Bo treed over 600yds away and I went and got him and he had one of those coon up a Bay tree. I left it alone and Bo and I came back toward Bam. Well he had got another track going and about time I was thinking of sending Bo to check him again he fell treed so I cut Bo for backup. Bo went in there and backed him and they blew the top out. I got in there and he was treed up in a big mess. Magnolia trees, oaks and cottonwoods with vines everywhere. The Cottonwood was a den but they were on the Magnolia beside it. I looked for 15 minutes probably and give Bam a bunch of Love because I didn't see a Possum and he wasn't in a hole and Bo said he was RIGHT! But I never found him and I sure hated that. This Pup needs something positive, BAD! I set more traps today so hopefully I can give him a hot coon track to run tomorrow night. It was a Fun night all in all and I enjoyed my two hounds, Good Hunting!

BAM

Couple pictures of Bam from tonight's River Hunt. We went down river to where he treed a coon last trip and I cut him up the drain headed North East. He went in almost 300yds and struck and when he did I knew it was a Coon. He really puts the volume to the Bawls when he hits a coon. With junk its not the same Bawl. He moved it into a swampy, boggy area just below a beaver pond and locked it down. He let out 3 of the prettiest locates you will hear on a pup. I took off to him and he was treed on a big River Birch. It went up about 20' and split into 2 big trunks and one was broke off and looked hollow in the end of it. No coon seen but wasn't a possum setting around looking at me either so I loved ole Bam up good for a few minutes then we came on home. It did his pride a lot of good and he was one happy pup after me petting him up and telling him good boy. Felt like even if it wasn't a coon in that hollow broke off limb with all the juice Bam has been getting from being in holes he needed a little love. No coon in the traps this morning, maybe tomorrow we will have one. Trapping places I don't hunt and coon are hard to come by there too. Mason is here spending the night so I just made the one drop and put Bam up. We will hit it hard tomorrow night after the Crawfish Boil. Deer season ends at dark tomorrow so that opens 3 more places up to Coon Hunting that we haven't hit in over 4 months. Should be able to get Bam on some coon and get some fur in his mouth. Good Hunting!

BO and Big Country

Chris made it down yesterday morning and we boiled up some Crawfish here on the River and took a little Jet Boat ride and Mason and I give him a tour on the 4 wheelers. Then after dark Bo and I introduced him, Jazz and Big Country to Black Branch Swamp. All the talk he's heard about how bad and thick the Swamp is and look at the picture of how Open it is around that tree, no briars or privet hedge in sight! Maybe one time out of a hundred do I tree in such a nice place in the Swamp but last night Bo and Big Country did just that on our first tree. They struck around 400yds and trailed it out good through the bad stuff and went close to 800yds from where they struck and locked it down. We were able to walk a good trail All the way to them and Chris found the coon laying flat out on a limb. We made one more tree in the Swamp, a Den, then went to Bo's Bottom with Jazz, Bo and Bam. Bo and Jazz worked a good track up the slough for 450yds and treed on a big water oak but couldn't find him and while they were doing that Bam was doing his on thing trailing the opposite way. He sounded like he had bayed so I headed in to him and when I got close he left so I think he was in a hole but knew he better git before I saw it. He struck deeper and trailed on and we caught him in a holler about to cross the little county road where a big culvert went under it. Maybe a Coon, Maybe Not. We will get after them again tonight. Good Hunting!

NASCAR

Thanks Bobby. If JJ wins his 7th title he will do it without me looking at him run one race this year. Done with Nascar. They trying to hard to attract a different Fan Base. The good ole country boys ain't good enough for them anymore. To politically correct and full of Bull. Tired of hearing more about Bubba Wallace if he finishes 10th than the guy that wins the race. Tired of hearing about Suarez the same way. Both are in the xfinity series but you get the picture. My money won't support Nascar any more. Also the rule changes, sick of the mess they have made with that. Not just year to year or race to race but just making them up as they go. Mason, Beverly and I had some great times cheering for Jimmie and Mason and I picking on her about Slow Poke Harvick. We got to see Jimmie Win his 6th Championship and Beverly got to see Harvick win his 1st. Great memories but its the past now, not the future. I pulled the plug on DIRECTV a couple months ago. No Football, No Nascar. Don't miss any of it. More time for Hunting and more money stays in my pocket.

I'm with you Steve. I never was big into NASCAR but football I rarely missed. Monday, Thursday, Sunday, whenever, I'd be watching. This year was it! The Bengals game put me over the edge. There is no more love or integrity for the game. It's filled with murderers, drug dealers, rapists, women and child abusers with no punishments for their crimes. The league has lost control and have chose money over character. Even when the league tries to give a punishment the players union steps in and finds the most liberal judge they can to overturn it. It's gone too far and it's completely out of control. I know I can't fix it but I will no longer support it!

I agree with y'all. Especially about the fan base nascar is trying to pull from. I still like junior, Harvick, JJ, and kenseth. But it's not the same anymore. I don't watch the NFL anymore. But college football is getting just as bad. I'll watch the 500 and rooting for junior. But I'll probably be right behind you Steve. Too much politically correctness in our whole society! Its total madness if you ask me!

Swamp Hunting

Chris left Early this morning headed back to better coon hunting country. Wish I was going with him. We had a tough night of hunting Monday night and didn't hunt last night because of rain and storms. Went to the Coast yesterday and looked around and Chris saw how much it had recovered since Katrina. Nice little day trip that I enjoyed.

Jeremy, how's Miss Wisconsin doing? Won't be long and she will be ready to start chasing some of those Big Coon yaw have up there. I saw you had a thread talking about coming to Bluetick Days in May. It would be great to meet you so hope yaw get to make it. I already have our cabin booked at John Kyle State Park which is to me the best place to stay. Only 20 minutes from the Civic Center and set on Sardis Lake.

Bobby it does seem a lot of folks in this country have gone slap mad. Lost their minds. Greed and quest for Control and Power is Ruining this Country. People need to live their ON Lives Do what they love to do and leave other people and their lives alone. Live and Let Live.

Miss Wisconsin is doing well. I'll get you some updated pics. I think she's going to be a very nice looking hound. She don't care much for all this snow and cold but I guess I don't either. We got blasted again yesterday, around 12". When spring hits we will start working with her more. I showed her one hide and she grabbed right on and pulled fur, she's not afraid of anything. Anything new or out of place she's going to investigate! I am planning on making the trip to Bluetick Days. Although I won't have a dog far enough along to hunt, I want to get out and support the hunts and the breed. I will stay in touch as it gets closer. I would like to meet you and others and see some good hounds!

Back Home Again in Indiana...

Made it back to Southfork Creek in under 12 hours. Thanks Steve and Beverly for a great time. It was great to spend time with you and your family. I will have a whole new perspective now when I read about Bo's Bottom, Blackbranch Swamp, and Haunted House Bottom.

Thanks again.

Quail Hunt and Jeppers Creepers

Chris, Glad you made it home and we enjoyed your visit. I Really Hate you missed this Redneck Quail Hunt we had booked this morning, an Adventure Shane and I will remember a Long time! Now for that Story.

I had booked a local Quail Hunt for this morning trying to have plenty of fun things to do while Chris was down visiting. I figured after a night of coon hunting around here he would need some fun during the daytime or he might not stay long. Well, I should have booked it for Monday because he left early this morning, done had all the fun hunting these swamps he could stand, lol! Mr. Jack was also supposed to make this hunt but he called Monday and was very sick so he missed out on this great Adventure. Hope your getting better Mr. Jack. Shane and I pulled up at 8am and the owner and guide were waiting out on the blacktop. He pointed to a little drive going off down into a dark hollow lined by thick brush and told us to pull on down to the camp, they would be there in a bit. So we pulled on down the drive a couple hundred yards and as we got further in there it was junk everywhere. old washer and dryer's, junk iron, garbage, broke chairs, junk tractors, ect. We dead ended at a camper that had the front door wide open, was up off the blocks in the front with the back bumper touching the ground and a ole mangy dog was coming out the front door of it with a Quail in his mouth. I looked at Shane and He looked at me and I said, " The Movie Deliverance didn't look as spooky as this Place ". Shane said, " You ever heard of the Movie Jeepers Creepers? " I said, No, But I think we about to be the Stars of Part II !!!! I'm not one to back out on a deal but I'm here to tell you I was real tempted to throw my truck in reverse and come out of that hollow and show them how good I could drive, Backwards!! But we sucked it up, shot 17 Quail and missed a lot, and will look back on this Redneck Adventure and laugh many times knowing we made it out of that Dark Hollow, Alive! We had a dog they called Little Bit and the name fit because she pointed birds under a Little Bit of everything, Junk Cars, Tractors, Drill Stem Pipe, Rotten Picnic Tables, Old Roll of Net Wire in the Briars, ect. There was a couple Horses in the place and I think they were for kicking the birds out of the extra tough places the dog couldn't get into. The best part was at the end of the day when it got bird cleaning time. Our Guide took us back to " The Camp " and pulled 3 pair of nasty cutters out of a 5 gallon bucket that used to contain Hydraulic Oil and that was setting out in the open full of rain water and leaves. Blades still had old feathers on them. When he got done cleaning the birds he tossed the rain water out of the bucket and tossed the meat in the Hydraulic Oil Bucket then ran some water in there and sloshed the meat around. I told Shane, " Looky There, We won't even have to use Grease in the Frying Pan, They should just slide around and fry up good with that coat of Hydraulic Oil on them !!! "

Bird Huntin and Coonhuntin

Now what could be more fun than that. Steve I'm sure sorry that I missed all the fun and didn't get to hunt with Chris while he was down. I have not been out of the house since Monday. I have been taking some pills and stuff, you know how it is when something wrong with you everybody has got a remedy. If I'm not feeling better by tomorrow I'm going to the Dr.

Can't stop laughing.

I look at you and Shane, the looks on your faces, the algae covered table, trash laying all around, it's too much. You look like you just ate a lemon!

BO

Tonight it was just me and Bo. River Bottoms and Swamp around here are still flooded from Tuesdays rain so I loaded him in the truck and drove West to Amite County, about 35 minutes to the Old Roberts Place. One hour from when I pulled up out there I was back in the truck headed for home. Bo was 2 for 2. Cut him on West side of little county road first drop. Pointed him down a bush hogged lane that had 20 year old pine to the left and big oaks to the right. He ran the trail to 0.62 mi then turned and came back to within 400yds, struck and smoked it 100yds and fell treed on a big water oak. Coon was looking at me coming down the lane so I just hooked Bo up told him good job and led him back to where the truck was parked on East side of road and fired him East. He left out fast, slammed the brakes on the Garmin at 203yds, threw a locate and fell treed on the vine going up into this big oak. He located a dozen times before he settled and treed hard. Took a couple minutes but I found him on other side of tree by spotting his tail hanging out of a big fork that had a wad of small vines in it and had that coon hid good. I took a few pictures and a video and then knocked him out to BO. We left headed home and a coon ran across the road not a mile from where I was hunting. So there's Coon in them there Hills! Glad to finally see a good number of them as they are thin in these swamps. Bam will be making the trip back out there with me tomorrow night. Hoping to get him on one.

Guys I hope yaw enjoyed the Quail Hunt Story and got a good laugh because Shane and I are still laughing about it. It wasn't funny when I pulled up looking at that junk yard and knowing I was paying 250 bucks for 3 hours and a chance to shoot 15 quail each. But the Memory and Time spent with my Son are now Priceless. One thing I find hard to believe is the Owner told me they shoot 23,000 Quail a year for the past 5 years. You pick up your hulls as you go or the place would be just empty shells everywhere with that kind of shooting. I had been thinking of going into business for myself and quitting my job but always scared to lose the security of a steady check. But the driving has got old and I don't want to finish the last 15 years of my working life and have regrets I never rolled the dice. After seeing this Quail setup, as nasty and poorly run as it was and to know they have that many desperate people just wanting to have fun throwing lead at some birds, Well, I have about decided the time is Now to go into business for myself. This setup was on 25 acres of an old field with some clumps of briars and privet hedge here and there for cover. I have 30 acres of mixed pine and hardwood with broom sage and briars so no reason I couldn't have a Quail Preserve. Already have kennels over there and a Cottage for Hunters to stay the night if they like. Dogs? I got them to, Blueticks! I know yaw have heard of a combination hound, Coon and Squirrel. Well, Coon and Quail will work I think, lol! Bo could retrieve before he treed his first Coon and Pebbles is doing it now every time I toss a stick. Yaw do the math cause I darn sure did yesterday looking at that mess. 23,000 birds, 15 per hunter, so you need at least 1,500 Hunters. That's 125.00 Bucks per Hunter. I don't know what they paying for those pen raised birds that they release before the hunter arrives but I will find out even if it means a trip back into Dark Hollow! That is 7 months of the year and the other 5 months I will Sawmill, pull Sinker Cypress and travel to Fall Festivals, Home and Garden Shows, Taxidermy Shows ect. Wherever I can peddle some Driftwood and Sinker Cypress Lumber. I'm dreaming big right now but if Jeepers Creepers Quail Preserve can make enough money to have been in business for 11 years I sure feel like I can. I located a nice enclosed Cargo Trailer in Texas today on EBAY that I will bid on and try to get. It will be for hauling our Sinker and display tables to different events. Not going to quit my job just yet but I'm getting all my ducks in a row and when I feel the time is right, I'm rolling the Dice. I don't want to look back and wonder what might have been. Sorry about the rambling, just dreaming out loud.

River

The river is up pretty good this morning. More so than yesterday as all the rain that fell Tuesday upriver from here has finally made its way down. It usually takes 36 to 48 hours After the rain quits to crest here at the house. The picture is of the pier and the water is 4' over it so its about an 8 or 9' rise. Should be washing some more Sinker Cypress out of a bank somewhere close.

Glad you pulled the boat.

SINKER HOOK UP

Bought my new Continental Cargo Trailer today off eBay. I am committed to making my business, " Sinker Hook Up " a bigger success than just selling a few boards here and there. The trailer is in Round Rock Texas near Austin so I will be leaving out this evening headed that way to pick up in the morning. Funny thing when I got back into coon hunting I bought my Bitter Creek dog box off eBay from a guy in Austin and drove by myself none stop round trip to pick it up, Here I go Again! I'm hoping to get a Vendor spot for Bluetick Days and have some of my Sinker Projects on display and for sale. I will have Shane use Plasma Cutter to cut me out hounds treeing and running Coon and lay template over Sinker Slabs and use his Sand Blaster to cut the print into the wood. Hoping to have a bunch of Beautiful things so yaw don't buy the first World Champ Potlicker you see, save a little for Me!

Trailer

We just made it home from our trip to Texas to pick up the trailer. Here is a picture of it from earlier in the day. Made the 17 hour round trip without any problems what so ever and the trailer pulled like a Dream. You could easily forget it was back there. Speed limit in Texas in places was 80mph and we were rocking on along staying ahead of the pack or keeping pace with them. I really am glad I decided to get it because it is a super nice trailer with lots of recessed lights inside, loading lights out the back, recessed tie down rings in the floor and cabinets in the front in the V. Going to be fun putting our projects together and seeing how there received by the Customer. Lots of ideas were talked about by Beverly and I and Shane sending text from work with some of his ideas. Hoping to have lots of different things by the time Bluetick Days rolls around. Need to get my Vendor spot reserved before they are all gone. Jeremy I'm hoping you get to make it down so we can meet and you can look at what we have and we will talk about the projects that's on your mind. Take Care.

Picture of a coffee table made out of a Sinker Slab I sold a friend of Shane's. We will have one of these at Bluetick Days for sure.

Steve, glad you and Mrs. Beverly made the trip back home safe. I like your new trailer, but I don't think it will be long before you will have to buy a bigger Trailer and Truck. I love what Ideas you have already discussed and showed. I don't think it will be long until you are going to have to give ole Bo to me, Because you and Mrs. Beverly aint even going to have time to feed him.LOL. I hope all your dreams and plans come true. Let some of this water go down and I get to hitting on all cylinders again and we'll see if ole Bo and Tramp can still tree a coon.

BO and BAM

Thanks Mr. Jack and Scott.

Took Bo and Bam to Bo's Bottom tonight and as I got to the Beaver Lake they both blew up on back of the 4 wheeler so I cut'em. They left there screaming and I listened to a good race until he took to the water and that slowed them down but Bam surprised me and picked him back up on the other side and got ahead of Bo almost 200yds before Bo got out of that water and joined him. They pushed him hard to the river then broke down again. I think he crossed but the hounds kept hunting him on my side and Bam found something he shouldn't, A Possum. He locked up treed and blew the top out and was over 600yds from where I had to leave the 4 wheeler. On the way to him Bo met me and I hooked him up and knew for sure then that Bam was in trouble. I have got on this pup so much for holing that when he sees my light he leaves the hole so I have eased up some until we get some more coon treed and have some good times but that just isn't falling into place right now. He treed hard and I just hooked him up and led them back to 4 wheeler. Not going to punish him for treeing no matter what it is. Not now, to young. But I will work with him next possum I catch. Break him from trailing them so hopefully he will leave them alone when they climb. Went up in the bottom a little further and cut them again and it wasn't long and Bam struck and was burning it up but nothing out of Bo. He swung around and headed my way and I heard something coming and lit it up with the light, Diller. I cut the light out as it ran on by and put the juice to Bam and he quit it and came to me and I loaded him up. Bo was deep by then and was trailing a bad track in a bunch of water so I just held Bam on the 4 wheeler. Bo got it below the beaver dam and in shallow water and better woods and moved it on out and treed 733yds in. I headed to him and he was treed on a big water oak and had a double. He deserved one but not knowing which was the Sow and as hard as coon are to get after around here I left them both up. Petted him up good and came on out. I still haven't caught a coon in the trap for Bam to run at night. I have had two baited for over a week and only caught one possum. One is on the river and other is in woods by my shop. Baited with dog food, marshmellows and gummy bears. Never had such a run of bad luck trying to catch a coon. Going to start souring some corn tomorrow and see if that helps. I know one thing about Bam, he is a hunting fool. Nothing stops his desire to get gone and make something happen. In good coon this pup would be well started and on his way to making a fine coonhound. I was really impressed that he got out of that Beaver Pond and got back on that coon before Bo did instead of wallowing around in all that water wasting time. The breaks start going his way he is gonna make me proud. Good Hunting!
