Nice...

That's a nice mount Carl...I remember when you got him and how that picture looked...I think it's back in this post a little ways.

I'll have to say that it's almost as nice a picture as this one...

Dave had Yank and Slim out last night and I thought this picture was a good representation of the future...Slim and my grandson Cruz...

Dogs

Hey Carl, the dogs look good...sometimes it's nice to have things work out like that.

I went out last night with my grandson Cruz and we had an interesting night...

This is Cruz working on his training skills with Slim and Cherry...

Cherry and Slim...

Cherry did a nice job on this track and tree and Slim covered her nicely.

Sometimes it's the stuff that never makes it on camera that makes for a memorable night...Cruz and I were kind of like the keystone cops last night and although I didn't think it was so funny at the time...looking back this morning now...it makes me giggle almost hysterically...

I had Cherry collared up with the Garmin but noticed after I had Slim unloaded out of the Ranger, that Cherry's regular collar still had Woofter's name and number on it...I had forgotten to replace her collar with one with my own information on it. I had Cruz holding Slim while tried to remedy the situation with the collar...I figured that I couldn't let her go with that collar on and seeing as how she already had the Garmin collar on, I could take off the regular collar and let her run with just the Garmin...now...being the genius that I am...I made sure I had a firm grip on the lead and then I took the regular collar off...of course...the lead was attached to that regular collar so as soon as it dropped off her...she took off like a shot towards the woods with me standing there holding a lead with an empty collar hanging off it...at this point...Slim sees Cherry heading for the woods so he makes up his mind he's not gonna get left behind so he makes a break for it...Cruz is holding onto the end of his lead...so now you have to picture Slim with his head down...digging up turf like a bull getting ready to charge and Cruz hanging on for dear life doing the stutter step across the hay field...of course grandpa is hollering...DON'T LET HIM GO CRUZ and I'm chasing after both of them...doing my best imitation of a high speed sprinter (ya...right)...Cruz was trying to dig in his heals and Slim was gaining speed and I was gaining on the both of them...long story short...Cruz didn't let go...he was hanging on for all his might and I finally caught up and put the grabs on Slim to bring the situation to a happy ending.

It gets better...

Later on after we have made a good tree, I decide that I should let them go again and I turned them loose on another field to see what we could get cookin'. Cherry lit up in the woods and was going like she had a mouth full of fur but Slim never says a word...by this time, she's about 800 yards by the Garmin and I'm thinking that this coon has long legs and a flag tail...and I was right. I drove all the way around on the road with the Ranger because I could see that she had quit this high speed chase and I wanted to get as close as I could to get her caught...Slim was somewhere in between, probably following but not barking at all...It was about a mile and a half around but pretty soon I was close and I could tell by the Garmin that she was heading back towards where I had let her go. I drove down close to where she had crossed a small creek and I came across Slim...standing at a fence trying to figure out how he was going to get across. I coaxed him to me and got him loaded up in the back of the Ranger...sort of...You have to kind of be able to picture the Ranger after I put the tracks on it at this point...it's about a foot higher and the tracks on the back stick out about a foot past the back end...Slim doesn't know anything about jumping that high to get into the back of the Ranger so I kind of lift him up while standing at the side of the box...he struggles and scratches his way up onto the dump box bed and I'm moving over to get him hooked up and about that time...Cherry barks at something about 200 yards up the hill...Slim decides that he wants to join in again and I don't have him hooked up yet so he makes a break toward the end of the box...being the veteran coon hunter that I am...I tell him...Oh no you don't...and I move towards the back of the dump bed with the greatest of agility...one hand still firmly tangled in his collar...we both hit the back of the dump bed at the same time only both my feet are now firmly planted into the side of the back track...of course...I'm still moving forward and Slim is about to jump so...over I go to land uncerimoniously...THUD...flat on my back on the ground...directly under where Slim is going to plant himself...firmly on my chest with a big...umph....from both of us. My hand never left his collar and for at least a couple of seconds...I think Slim must have thought that the devil himself must have popped up out of the ground...right there at the back of that Ranger...good thing Cruz was fast asleep, buckled into the seat and slumped over where he couldn't see all this transpire...I think I might have lost some of the awe and mystery that surrounds grandpas all in one tangle of dogs and old farts...

Anyway, we got Cherry rounded up and I'll have to tell you...it felt pretty good to hit the shower and then the bed...I've got a couple of aches and pains this morning that I haven't felt for a long time...

Such is the other side of the story on some nights with our great sport of hunting with hounds...........eh?

Pups, you just gotta luv em. I had two 10 yr old girls, a 13 mos old pup and a 16 mos old pup out with me last night. We actually treed a coon! Tom Tom looked good for the first time in awhile.

Posted by topdog on 04-03-2011 08:55 PM:

Pups...

Yep, we sometimes forget that there's a lot to be learned for those youngsters, especially if we've had the pleasure of only following an older dog for awhile.

All in all...it's what makes the sport fun for me these days. Since I got the Ranger fixed up, there aren't too many places I can't get around to anymore back in these hills and although it was touch and go going up to that tree that we made, it was all good in the end...being as sure footed as I am and all...

Folks need to just lighten up sometimes and enjoy the ride...everything isn't going to work out just right every time we turn them loose but eventually, time passes, dogs learn and then we're back enjoying the fruits of our efforts again.

When male dogs reach about a year and a half of age, they start going through puberty and a lot of things are changing inside their bodies and also inside their heads...I call this period the "stupid phase" and I've seldom ever had a dog that didn't go through it. Lots of folks send real good prospects down the road at about that time but I always tell them that we have to just grit our teeth and hunt them through it because if they were good going in, they'll be even better coming out.

Females are different...they go through a "stupid phase" every 6 months or so. Based off how Cherry is acting...I'd say we'll be seeing her heat cycle about any day now. I can say one thing about Cherry though...she is a ball of fire, full of hunt, has a locate to die for and is a solid tree dog...we'll get her over her affliction to chase something other than a coon...right quick...and then she's gonna make a splash this spring and summer...I may even take the reigns on this little spirtfire and Dave can focus on Yank if we decide to try and finish him to Gr. Nite.

Dave took Yank to a hunt last night and he was treed split as time ran out...if he scores the coon, he wins the cast and gets a win...the tree was hollow. He said it was a good running track that went a good distance but...that's the way the chips fall sometime. He looked good, things just didn't work out.

Sound's like you had a great time. Our dogs done really well track was hot lasted about two minutes. All the dogs treed so hard you couldn't hear anything but dogs treeing. And i didn't have to walk very far from the truck.

Quick tree

Cherry treed that coon last night just about 100 yards from where I was able to drive the Ranger to but it was straight up and it was mud and ice covered so it was a little tricky...for me at least. Cruz didn't seem to think it was much of a challenge but then again...mud and ice have some kind of special appeal to a 6 year old...eh?

Good point...I didn't even think about it...all this talkin' about it and not one picture to show what I've been up to.

I fine tuned the track tension today and it's ready to rock & roll.

Pictures next time out...

LMAO. You spend all that money on tracks and you still end up running thru the woods.
I put a class and breed win on EZ yesterday. She lost to a real nice black pup. Real nice black pup. She was a looker.
I'll give you a call later this week. Watch for a new number. I washed my phone. Don't know if it survived or not. Bummer.

Yep Tom were or dogs treed was also up a steep hill but only went up about 100 yards and it was slippery and with back sore i wraped the leash around the chest of them and they walked out just perfect so i was happy. It was good getting out again. Dr. says i should walk but i don't think he means coonhunting. lol

Smile

Tom I hadn't Smiled in a while but I guess reading about the hunt brought a little smile to my face. Cherry has been laid up for a year I knew she would have plenty of fire when she came out of the box. Cherry is the type that needs hunt about 5 times a week. Have a great day. Thought in that one picture that was still her old collar she had on. Dave

Hunt...

If it made you smile to read about it...you should have been there...you'da busted a gut...

It's funny how we keep this image in our heads of how quick on our feet we used to be...and then we find ourselves on our back with a wild dog planted firmly on our chest...about that time...this vision of how it used to be kind of starts to fade.

I had a friend many years ago that was old as dirt and the stories he used to tell makes it clear that having these little events isn't anything new or just limited to me...he told me of the time he was out hunting with his old kerosene lantern...he said he had 3 dogs treed and he was having a heck of a time finding the coon so he raised the lantern and started backing up to get a wider view...he said the last thing he remembered was the lantern flying over his head as he stepped backwards off a steep embankment...he said that he let out a blood curdling yell that must have sounded like a coon scream because the next thing he remembers is all 3 dogs boiling over the side of the embankment and came charging down the side to get in on the fight...he said it was a heck of a sight as he watched it all unfold by the glow of the fire his lantern had started in the leaves...

He said that after he checked himself for broken bones and made sure he fended off the dogs before they decided that he was a wounded coon...he sat down and laughed his butt off...out there in the middle of nowhere...what the heck...what else was there to do...eh?

Hey Tom,
Heres something that might help with that traction problem.l...lol.

Grippers...

Yep...those look like they'd work Tim...I could have used them while crawling up that greasy hillside but I don't think they would have helped me while stumbling over those tracks...

It's gonna dry up over the next few days and the frost is about out of the ground so it can only get better...we'll hope for the best...eh?

Sobber slingin'

You guys are going to have to get you some safety glasses with little windshield wipers mounted on them to keep all that slobber slingin' from getting in your eyes...eh?

The dogs look real good...gotta love those Red dogs on the tree...nothin' better.

Dave went out last night with Yank and Slim so we'll see how it went later on today. It actually looks like Yank and Slim both are losing a couple of pounds...but they got a ways to go yet. It won't be long and they'll be hard and crankin'

More to come later when I'm able to find the camera...

Coon huntin' ride...

I'll have it cranked up this weekend Mat and I'll get some pictures of it in action...or getting ready to go into action anyway...

Dave got out last night for a little while...he had a truck load of kids and took Yank and Slim

This is a crew...

Sometimes...you gotta shake the vine...

Slim getting in on the action...

This was how the night ended...good looking bunch of boys and dogs...

The boys were Dave's two sons...Chase and Cruz and the other is a neighbor that's learning to enjoy the sport.

It's finally starting to warm up to the point where it stays above freezing all night and it showed on the dogs...they got warm fast. It's this way every year...the winter wools them up good and a little extra feed sticks to their ribs and then it takes some good time in the woods to harden them up again. We'll have them hardened up by May some time and after that, it will just be a good training season for these youngsters.

If the weather holds, tomorrow night will be Gun's first trip to the woods at night just so he can start to get used to the idea and to see what he thinks of the dark...I don't think I'm going to take him with company, I'll just spend the time with him out there and see what shapes up.
