Pups

The pups looked good and did a good job this last weekend, I'm looking forward to their next steps to see how they progress from here...I think they'll make dogs.

We got a winter storm through here yesterday afternoon and overnight and it dumped anywhere from 4-9" of snow on the area. We got about 4" right around here but it's already starting to sink into the ground because it never got below freezing last night...what a mess. I hate it when we get these April storms because it seems that just when we get a grip on decent spring weather, we'll get a blast and it sets us back.

On the bright side, it's supposed to improve temperature wise over the next week to ten days and back in the 60s so this is just a minor set back.

I've got my turkey hunting season in right now so I'll hope for a little better weather tomorrow through the weekend...it's snowing now and every branch in the woods hangs heavy with snow...it's a winter wonderland but no fun to be out and about in.

I'm hoping that things are going well with Buck on his trip to Indiana with Haze and Moose, I'll be glad when we've got some Moose on ice ....and I know Mike is hoping for another good draw on Haze also.

Dogs

The pup and dogs look good Carl. It's good to see you're able to get out and about and enjoy these spring days...between the snow and rain and wind...eh?

Dave did some hunting this last week and treed a few so the coons are out and about but it seemed some of the tracks were pretty long. The tracking is better than it was on frozen ground so now there is more track to follow compared to what they were used to just a few weeks ago.

Most of the pups are pretty much done with training so now it's just a matter of getting to the woods when and where ever we can.

We're enjoying a 60 degree day for a change and it feels pretty good.

Keep at it Carl, we'll be seeing you and a hunt or somewhere down the road.

Hunt

Dave got out the other night and took Gun along for the first time. Gun has never been in the box so I don't know how that all went but I see a couple of pictures on the camera so he must have had a decent hunt...

Yank...

Gun and Yank...

Yank pretty much does it like he always does it...sits down and trees...with the meat.

Gun is just learning the business but he's tree minded and is willing to participate from start to finish. He's just 10 months old but I like him a lot so he'll get some good reps over the next few weeks.

I'm looking forward to this training season with Slim and Gun and maybe one or two more and it will make for an interesting fall hunting season also.

She cries to go every night. It won't be long and she will be tagging along.

She named her puppy Winn Dixie, the problem is "Winn Dixie" is a different pup every time she sees them.

Holy cow...what a sweetheart. I'd say you'll have your hands full raising those youngsters all together.

It just can't get too much better than that Jason...she is priceless...and what an arm load of nice pups to boot.

Tom,

Thank you, she is the sparkle in my eye. I replaced her nursery rhymes with chapters from "Dog Talk".

Jason

"Dog Talk"

I can see that she already has the touch Jason...those chapters must be making for good bedtime stories...eh?

Dave went hunting last night with Yank and Gun...he was back in just over an hour and had made two trees with the meat...on the first tree, Yank pretty much had it run and treed before Gun got where he was going but on the second track, he got right up front with Yank nearly step for step and when he hit the tree, Dave said he had a great locate and rolled it over hard. He found him stuck up on the tree and looking and sounding like a big dog.

Yank is a sit down tree dog for the most part but Gun is showing some inclination to follow in his daddy's and great grand daddy's footsteps.

The pictures are kind of cool because these are of grand son and grand daddy. Yank is only 4 and Gun is 10 months old. Ace is Gun's sire and Cherry is his dam.

Ace is out of Yank and is under 2 years of age and yet he seems to be able to reproduce very nicely when he was made part of a good line cross.

Mr. Woofter did his homework on these crosses and mated a young hound before he is proven in the hunts but don't doubt for a minute that he can't track and tree a coon with style and that he has been doing it since 8 months of age.

There are lots of good hounds in the world but it always gives me a real kick when we find that special one that can make the crosses work and I'm real excited about the potential in Dave's Ace dog.

Young dogs

Hey Tom, I dont know about Gun( but i would say its the same ) if all young dogs were as easy to start as Hussler was , a person would just want to start them all the time. All you have to do is show them a coon and take them hunt'n. Losts of fun that way. Katie only has a single shot of T- Top and she was the same way. I love it when they come out treeing......eh!.

She sounds real good Tim and she's a good looker too. I've got a litter mate brother on the way to Wisconsin in the not too distant future and I'm excited to get him.

That last picture is a keeper...perfect ending to a perfect day...eh?

Pictures

Hey Carl, the dogs look good...it's nice to have a good chase and tree like that once in awhile...some nights can be long and even though the dogs work hard, they don't always come up with a good track and tree.

It looks like Chance is getting back into shape after that litter of pups and that's good to see. She should be fun to hunt this fall and by that time, who knows...maybe one of those pups might even be ready to tag along.

It's good to see Lucky getting in on the action...he looks in pretty good shape and seems to be doing good.

Ace Pup

Tim I am glad to see your female pup is doing good so far out of Ace. I have a choice Male out of that cross going up to Tom the first of June. Tom will have a problem in the end picking from Gun and Dagger. Good Luck with Hussler too. P.S. I haven't been on here much and just saw the picture of Gun treeing. He is beautiful and trees like his Sire. Ace will do the Redbone Bred proud if he breeds a few females. He has breeding,Looks,Great disposition, and loud mouth. After saying all of that his pups are doing good because of the people putting them in the woods. I have a lot of great reports on the pups out of Cherry but some of the guys don't post on here. I wish they did. Thanks to the guys hunting T-Top Show-Time Coon Stopper Ace pups. If you have a picture of an Ace pup post it here as the credit goes to my friend Tom. Spencer Smith's female from the Ace/Cherry cross treed 3 coon by herself before 6 months of Age her name is Baby Girl I believe he said. He said she was the best pup to her age he has seen to date. Dave

Posted by topdog on 05-03-2011 01:16 AM:

Looking forward...

I'm really looking forward to getting Dagger up here Dave, we'll put him to work as soon as we can. He sounds like a real nice acting pup and he sure has the goods piled up behind him...that's for sure.

You know how I like messing with these young dogs and if Dagger can make me think twice while measuring up to Gun...then he's something to be reckoned with for sure. I like Gun as good as any I've started and that's saying a lot. How they turn out in the end is a matter of how much talent they have and then it's a matter of opportunity and repetitions and he'll get both while he's in our hands.

The important thing to remember is that it's sometimes hard to determine if a young hound is going to have the ability to reproduce until you've made some crosses and then started and finished some of the pups. You did your homework and had the courage to make the crosses so now there are at least a couple of crosses on the ground to evaluate...from what I see so far, he's got something to offer.

It will be fun to see how it all shakes out in the end.

Spencer I am so sorry about baby girl. Maybe some day I will have something and be out that way where I can help. Right now all I have is Ace but I plan to buy a nice female up the road some day to once again raise a litter of good pups out of Ace. Dave
