SINKER CYPRESS HOPE CHEST

Pictures of a Sinker Cypress Blanket Chest made out of my wood. Guy in Baltimore Maryland wanted one so I picked out some Pecky Sinker Cypress for Front, Sides and Back and some 2" thick slabs with live edge for top. I had a local cabinet shop build them as I don't have enough confidence in myself to do a project like this for someone else that's looking for heirloom quality. Had them build two, one to sale to the guy in Maryland and one for Beverly. Now I have a Smiling Bob and a Smiling Beverly, Everybody's Happy!

Thanks Scott. It's a lot of work and if I kept up with all my hours I'm probably making about a Buck Fifty an hour with this Sinker Cypress but it's a Passion and I love doing it and it's part of the Joy of my Life so you can't put a price on that. Coon Hunting is the same way, You have to Love it to Do it and there is no short cut to making money or getting rich. Take Care.

Coon Hunter Puppy Prayer

Took Bam and Blade tonight. Went to Haunted House Bottom first. Bam got on a cold track that he moved steady back toward the gravel road and since there is Never any traffic I let him go. He crossed the road and treed about 200yds in. I got to him and he was on a Turkey Pine and you couldn't get anywhere to see the top 3rd of the tree. I finally found a spot where I could see the most and hit the squaller and he looked with both eyes but started moving up as I was getting the clip for the rifle out of my pocket. He got out of my sight and I never saw him again. Very frustrating when you have a good pup that has done a good job and you can't do yours. I loaded them up and went to Black Branch Swamp and cut them loose down the creek. Blade went a little ways but came back and Bam went to working another cold track. He moved it a little ways then hit some water and scribbled that big dot you see in the picture. I knew he was checking trees but after a few minutes he moved on out but didn't pick the track up so circled back. Then he drifted out to the right and got out of that water and found the track and went to moving it again. You can see he was at the top right of the screen when I took picture. 10 minutes later he had moved another 200yds and fell treed. He sounded good so I felt confident he had this one too. He was treed on the medium size tree behind him in the picture with all the vines. Only place you could shine it was where Bam is, Straight Up. I shook vines, blew the squaller, beat on the tree and slapped my hands together. Nothing. I went to the other side and there was a tall sapling that grew up close to the tree and went way up near the top. I got to thinking about the same type situation where BO treed Rocket in a Magnolia one night and I rocked a sapling against the limbs and Rocket jumped out on Bam. So with that in mind I went to rocking that sapling and Prayed to the Lord to PLEASE HELP me get this dang Coon out to this Deserving Pup. I quit rocking the sapling and shined what I could, Nothing. Walked around the base of the tree beside Bam and looked up...... Into a wide set of mean eyes 10' above my head! He was coming down and yea, the clip was in my pocket. I got it out just as he turned around and started back up and I popped two rounds in him. He dropped like a rock right beside me and Bam. You talk about a happy pup and Coon Hunter. No doubt the Lord is a Coon Hunter and smiled on my pup tonight! Blade was raising some cane so I give him a taste and found a spot off in the dark to hang him up. Cut Blade lose and he found him quick and lit it up. I took Bam back through the thickets to the 4 wheeler calling Blade but he never left that coon. Had to go back and get him. Coon was a Big Boar so I was proud to see it wasn't a sow. Bam really looked good tonight on both those tracks and parking under the coon. We haven't been getting the breaks lately and I knew he needed one down to him to build that confidence up on those tougher tracks and glad we had a little help from Above tonight. When all else fails, say a Prayer, It Works. Good Hunting!

Bam, Hope Chest

Thanks Tommy. Seeing something like this chest built out of the wood I pull out of the river makes all the work worth while. I got hot at the shop yesterday moving lumber around but we got lucky yesterday evening and got a storm that popped up and rained a little and dropped the temps so hunting wasn't as bad last night as it could have been.

Mr. Jack I was starting to wonder about Bam the past few weeks. He look good one night then not so good for a few. To big a gap between the bad nights and good nights. But he just turned a year old and BO and others have went through the same ups and downs especially this time of year. Bam struggled in one spot last night that had a little water but it was also a big mud flat where there used to be water but its drying up a little but still boggy. They seem to struggle when they come across those mud flats. But he picked it up after about 10 minutes and moved on out good and picked the right tree. If we had the coons and good woods like they do up in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and could put one down a night to a pup like we can do here I believe we could make a young hound a Coon Dog a lot quicker. But then look at all the fun in these thickets we would be missing out on, and the snakes too!

WE picked up the SINKER CHEST today and put ours in our Home and Beverly got some pretty's setting on it and Loves it and so do I. The Cypress this came out of was pulled right behind the house and had over 1,000 growth rings. This Cypress lived over 1,000 years was Buried in the River over 150 years to Rise again when I hooked my winch to it. It was a Towering Giant Virgin Cypress admired by Indians, Home to Eagles and Coons. Now it lives a New Live in Projects like this Chest to be Admired and Loved by Me and My Family for many more generations to come. Cypress is THE WOOD ETERNAL, Get You Some!!! This Chest weighs over 100 pounds, Empty, you don't get this at a Furniture Store!!

HUNTING

Thanks Mr. Ed, we proud of it. Lot of hard work to get that wood where it is today. Glad to hear you and Caleb got Bobbie out and treed a few the other night. Be glad when it cools off and I'm headed yaws way. Take Care.

Took Bob the other night and made two drops but didn't get a strike. He hunted out good the second drop and we were in a great place but coon just wasn't moving yet. Came home and put him up and got BO and Pebbles. Took them past Haunted House Bottom to a big chunk of swamp land. They struck a decent track and moved out up the creek. Pebbles opening good and she has a good mouth, sure was nice to hear it. She has been a little later getting started but she is coming on like a freight train. I feel she is going to make a fine coon hound in a short time now that she's ready to. They got in a thick spot and Pebbles fell treed. BO located in there with her but wouldn't settle. He scribbled a dot on the Garmin for a couple minutes locating up but not hooking it then trailed out of there and Pebbles went with him. I feel it was a Sow with little ones as BO trees the last coon up. They trailed over 300yds and fell treed on a tree that went into a big beech that had the top broke out years ago and was hollow in the top. I could see the back of a coon and figured it was the sow so we left her alone. Pebbles was doing more winding treeing than smelling on the tree treeing. She is the kind of hound that goes through the woods with her head up winding and I feel she will tree a lot of layups when they start hitting the muscadines and are laid up in the vines getting full. BAM and BOB better keep progressing or Pebbles will be the NEW FAVORITE!!

HUNTING

Took BO and Pebbles to Bo's Bottom last night and BO got deep and under one in a hurry. He treed on a big cypress beside a drive going to some camps. It's a big chunk of land but on this one side near the river they are developing it and that's where he treed. Made it nice to be able to shine the whole tree and find the Coon quick but it was moving around a lot and I figured it was a Sow and also that near the camps and not knowing what kind of folks stayed there I decided not to put it down to BO and Pebbles. BO really deserves one as its been a while but I did the right thing leaving this one up. Moved on back into the middle of the place and cut them again. Bo got gone quick but didn't have to go far and fell treed. He was on a tree with tons of Vines loaded with Green Muscadine's as you can see in the picture. It wrapped around a tall pine that I couldn't see to the top and I figure that's where the Coon was. Hooked them up and made our way home. The frequent rains we have had really made the Blackberries put on like never before but they are gone now but looks like the rain has the Muscadine's doing the same thing. Proud to see it because the coons will have plenty to eat for a while when they start getting ripe. We have had some wind with a few of these storms and they blew down some green water oak limbs and I'm not seeing any acorns on them which isn't good. Hopefully the White Oaks will be loaded.

You are more of a trooper than me.. I can't remember the last time I took the young dogs out. I'm saving myself some misery till cooler weather in the fall- Fall will let us know what these young dogs are made of. Just got off the phone w/ Phillip from NC, he has a littermate to pebbles that he says is progressing nicely. I have two in the pen at home that are waiting for me and fall to be ready.. HAHAH.

I cut Zero the other night in Ohio. Five drops, five trees, five coon... Had a great time. Hunted with a 6 mth old Zero x Alice pup up there owned by Jensen Poole. I really liked her..

I wish I lived a little closer to you.. I'd like to see more of that cypress stuff first hand! I used a lot of rough cut stuff when I built my office. 18" wide pine heart boards w stain look sweet.

Keep those doge in the woods, I like reading your updates!

MISERY and YOUNG DOGS

You are right about Misery and young dogs Casey. Anytime but especially now with the heat. Last night and tonight both hunts were rough. Bad tracks that they can't handle yet and a couple Dillars in the ground. But BO made a Coon Hound when I pounded him 2 Summers ago at 13 months old and put 10 Coon down to him over a few months. When it got cool I had a nice hound that I could tree coon with most nights and enjoy every night. Trying to have one of these young ones treeing pretty regular by the time it cools off or maybe all of them. It's up to them. I try to hunt one a couple drops then the other a couple drops each night then about every third night take BO and Pebbles or Bo and Blade. Those two are younger so not taking them as much but really want BAM and BOB looking good by Fall. Usually I get One Good night for ever Three of Misery. Just enough to keep me going back out there. Zero sounds like he's hitting on all Cylinders. I really like Pebbles and hope she makes it because she would be my Female for the Future. I have to many and will have to cut back come Fall so tough choices to be made down the road. Our season is open now and we can put one down a night if we want so Pebbles will have one put down to her before long. I'm proud she is going every step with BO and opening some and starting to want to tree so its just a matter of time til she parks under one. I will keep you updated, Take Care.

RIDGE RUNNER DIDN'T MAKE IT

Took BO and Blade tonight to Haunted House Bottom where BO and Bob had got after one early one morning that took them out of the swamp and into the hills but he give them the slip and they didn't get him treed. BO shot South East almost 900yds before he struck the Ridge Runner then the race for the hills was on. They came back North East and BO was screaming like he was looking at him. Blade had went a few hundred yards then came back before BO struck. Sure wish he could have been on this hot track. Bo got to close after about a 400 yard run for the hills and the Ole Ridge Runner had to climb or get caught. I was 538yds from him and that was close as I could get so I grabbed the Rifle and took off. Blade headed out ahead of me to him but before he got there he struck something and left there rolling. Got to Bo and found the Big Coon Quick as you can see his big eye in the center of the Red Picture. I shot a couple times and down he came just as Blade came strolling in. I caught him and hooked him back and let him watch BO have fun. He wasn't happy but he's gonna have to go an be at the tree or he ain't getting in on the Fun. He sure sounded good running whatever he was running. Not the same mouth he uses in the pen. Roaring like a Lion! We made our way home now I'm about to go hunt BOB some. Even being unemployed I've about got to old to hunt like this. 3 hours in this heat is about all I want. I went this morning also with Bam but nothing to brag on except he did go 800yds fast to get struck. His Grand Pappy IL. Mighty Blue Jake's Giddy Up is starting to show up!!! He hunt like that every drop and he will be running up on those hot tracks like BO did tonight and have a better chance of treeing them up something I can find them in. After seeing how far BO went tonight to strike a Coon in the finest hunting ground I have it's no wonder the pups haven't looked to good this week.

Awful what happened in France. It will be bad in this Country starting tomorrow evening and lasting until after the GOP Convention in OHIO. If we aren't at War in our on Country against each other then we MIGHT make it until Election time. And the real Enemy is taking advantage of the big distractions Idiots are causing. We better come together or we are lost as a Country. Pray, Prepare, Keep your Bible close and your Guns Closer!!

BAD NIGHT

Before and After, Alive and Dead pictures of a Cottonmouth Moccasin on a Beaver Dam I was crossing while Coon Hunting last night. His head in first picture is just behind the leave on the weed to the right. Him picking it up is what caught my eye from two steps away. They are MEAN and seldom run when your this close they just bow up and throw that mouth open and prepare to strike. I put a Bullet in his head for even thinking about it.

BAD NIGHT CONTINUED

Took BO and Pebbles to BO's Bottom last night and he covered over 500 acres of Prime River Bottom making loops and following sloughs and creeks and finally the River headed south back towards the house to strike one poor track. Over 3 miles on the Garmin and I cut loose after 9pm and he treed just before 1am across the River from the house. Over a mile South of the place I was hunting. He treed on a Big Beech Den Tree on the bluff just up from where I swim them. This is the den and Coon or Family of Coons they wind sometimes when swimming in the daytime and come unglued. Never has this hound had to search so far for so long and cover that kind of ground to find a sorry track. No wonder I been fussing about Bob and Bam this week. Moon was up and bright and I took the picture of it behind this big oak across the River. Tree looked like a Cross to me lit up by the Moon. Had to go get BO off the tree in the Jet Boat. Glad I had it in the river or I would have had to get wet to get him. Not hunting tonight, going to wait until the morning and see if I can catch them moving at a different time. I sure envy yaw up North with NO SNAKES and a Coon up Every Tree!

Tough Going

Steve it sounds like we are very lucky to be hunting in the part on the country that we do. We have a lot of good high ground and drive a couple miles we have low ground and every thing in between. We even have a spot or two that a hound will have to stretch out couple thousand yards or so to hit a track. I have been hunting Hook and Speck on the weekends all summer long and am having a great time with them. Both are looking not too sorry in my humble opinion. Hooks winding abilities and accuracy are starting to impress me more and more. And he doesn't take all night to get something done either. And Speck is one of the best I have ever had. That little female has it all going for her. Hope your enjoying your early retirement. I am 57 and plan to be done at 63. Maybe we will have a chance to get you up here on some OHIO coon after that. Happy Hunting!

CRAZY

To hunt down that way with the gators & snakes this time of year. Sure glad I don't have to put up with those 'critters' around here. Killed several rattlesnakes through the years in the daytime, but have never ran into one at night. If you need a vacation, come to Iowa. The only things that bite around here are 'skeeters'. Take care, Ron

FISHING

Mason and I did a little fishing this morning catching some little bream and Catfish. The rain we have been getting has the river a little cloudy and up about 6" and the Catfish were biting. Going down river in the Jet Boat tonight while its a little up as it makes it a lot safer with more wiggle room in the tight places when you have that extra water.

Ohio Ron, I'm really glad you still have those two and that they are doing a fine job treeing coon. I regret selling Rain. Knowing she had the makings of a fine Cooner and with great breeding I should have given her more time for her mouth to develop. You could hear her over a mile but I felt she was to high pitched for the kind of mouth I like. Should have held on to her. I'm not retired, don't know what you call it, maybe catching my 2nd breath. I will run the sawmill and sell lumber and do odd jobs and take it one day at the time and let God lead the way. I doubt I will EVER join the Rat Race of working Construction again. The road is to long, taxes to high and not enough Gratification anymore. Hope to one day meet you and cast our hounds together, Take Care.

Iowa Ron, Snakes just come with it down here. Can't look for them every step you just have to giddy up and not think about them until you are forced to. That's the 2nd close call I have had this year. Hope to one day get your way and enjoy treeing a few with you also, Take Care.

Hell no, he will use this to come after our GUNS, the very thing we need to stop terror if we are ever in the situation to do so. Why then? Because they know that even a mouse will bite when cornered and had enough kicks in and they know we, like the 13 states years ago will get enough of this out of control government abuse of power one day and decide to do something about it. That's why they want the Confederate Flag down, the State Flag and your GUNS, Period. It stands for HAD ENOUGH of LYING POLITICIAN'S!!!!!!!
I better talk about coon hunting now before I get deleted. I decided as bad as the heat is to not hunt the past couple days. The coolest days are 98 with heat index at 105 and we are hitting 101 by Tuesday coming with index of 110. When it gets dark its just to hot to take them so we have been swimming them in the river. Headed back to work at 3pm this evening for our big weekend of work. The type fast track job we have is brutal on the guys in this heat. Will get back to hunting after the heat backs off a few degrees. I think I was putting Briar in the woods to many nights in a row in this heat and may have been doing more harm than good. Good Hunting when it gets under 95, no more until then.

BO and BOB

Picture of Smiling Bob treed with Bo tonight in Black Branch Swamp. We had some rain before dark and it cooled it off some so I took them before the bright moon could rise in the sky. First drop they blew through the swamp and I cut them off at the County Road. Bo never opened and Bob was babbling some. I bumped him a couple times and got him to hush a little. Next drop only had to bump him once and he got the message. They got on in there and hit a hot track and for 10 to 15 minutes I listened to a fine race in those thickets with those 2 big mouth hounds pouring it to him. He climbed up a medium size Tupelo Gum in a thick stand of them surrounded by a thicket. I took a Video I will try to post tomorrow. Bob sounding and looking good. Hope we get more rain each evening to keep these temps down, it has been Hot.
