How did the surgery go? Did they decide what the lump was? Hope he is alright.

Surgery took a lot longer than they expected. There was a lot of scare tissue they had to remove and a pocket of puss about the size of an egg. They still aren't 100% on what it is. They sent everything in to ISU. They think it was a blocked duct in the salvary gland. He is doing good after the surgery but has an eight inch tube in his neck.

I only left my greyhound once before he died.. he was in critical care for a few days... I hated it. I aways stayed in recovery room with him etc... except that one time. I realized how truly awful it would be... to have a child hospitalized... I feel so fortunate.
I hope your guy is home SOON and out of the woods!

It can be very hard to love a "pet" or hunting partner etc... but it is SO worth it.
Thoughts and prayers Still, Heather

I Know...

..and what KILLS me is that alot of the people I have met thru rescue just think all hunters treat their dogs badly or don't care.... I know I've changed a few minds... I also know some people don't care and are bad in ALL areas of the animal world.... I have gotten to know more people with coonhounds who treat them like family...

When my blue pet Wyatt had a growth reomved from his leg I was so scared... ended up NOT being cancer... I decided that every day I DO have with him means that much more....they can go any day and so can we... each day on earth is a gift. When we share it with humans and animals we love it is just that much better.
I hope we get to see some good woods time shared with you and Dutch. Each trip out there will be that much better and every time you just sit and pat him will be that much more meaningful.
Nothing is quite like a hound...... Heather

Corey, are you comin up for zones on Sat.? I hear the coons are alot easier to tree in Iowa....LOL

Posted by Hawk32 on 09-04-2008 08:19 PM:

I don't think so. I was just up north last weekend. I promised amy I would take her out sat night. I wish I could. I wish I wouldn't of been such a dumba$$ and tried to qualify a dog. But dutch is out of commission anyway so I would be stuck not being able to hunt him. Mitch must have shown you that message. I think it was something like less dog power not easier coons. Really makes me want to guide and take them to the hills back home.

He's been going back in forth. One day the swelling down and it looks good the next day it looks like he has a baseball sticking out of his neck. That cross is doing well. Just talked to the guy that has the mother and 2 of the 4 pups. His male is running and treeing on his own and he just started with the female. She will run and tree his lead coon. the other 2 have not been worked much. I have seen one of those two run a and tree a turn loose coon so the ability is there. Just needs woods time.

He's doing ok. Had to take him back in yesterday though. His drain tubes aren't working properly and they put him on another antibiotic. It will be a while before his ready to go.

Posted by BULLET II on 09-11-2008 08:43 PM:

Hate to hear the ol dog has to go through all of that. The Rocket dog I us to own out of Bullet II had his whole head swell up one time and it started under his neck as just a knot. I let it go too long because it kept going away and then coming back until it finally became infected. He had a similar surgery as Dutch but not as extensive. The Doc said the same thing about the glands and gave me the same information your vet gave you except we didn't send anything off. At the origin of the infection which was on his neck they left about a two inch slit where I could stick a spray bottle filled with liquid antibiotics and squirt in there twice a day. Sounds like Dutch's is a bit more serious and I hope you can keep the infection down. Good luck.

Sounds good steve. I'm looking forward to this fall. Running the dogs and sitting in a tree. I got a couple stands hung up north but nothing down here yet. Not sure how many days I'll get to sit in a tree unless I head up north. I did go check out some public ground that looks good.
