COON HUNTING

We have been hunting about every night since getting home from Florida. Some good hunting and some not so good. Last night was a good one so I will tell about that hunt. Took Bob and Bo to Black Branch Swamp. I had some company with me, Mason, his Dad Stoney, and my Doctor, Dr. Snow. You know you getting old and your health is bad when you start taking your Doctor with you Coon Hunting, Lol! He went the night before in the Jet Boat with me. Must have a Death Wish, lol! They struck a good track deep and rolled it. They were North of us over 500yds but sounded like they were just a 100. They had the swamp echoing with one continues roar as they drove that track through the thickets of the Swamp. When they treed it was the hardest I have heard Bob tree thus far. He was spitting them out and they were Split 50 yards apart and both had a Coon. We put Bobs down and after he finished with it I toted it to Bo and give him his taste of a Job Well Done. Mason and I both fell in the Mud on the way to the tree but as you can tell by his expression on his Face it didn't bother us a bit. That boy loves Coon Hunting with his Pawpaw! Coon is on right side of tree on 4th limb up 5' from the trunk. You can see his tail in the picture. No leaves on the tree but still tough to find if they don't look.

CUSTOM CLOCK

I had a guy in Florida Custom make this Clock for me with his Plasma Cutter. I sent him a picture of the hound treeing the coon and he made a template and went from there. Today I finished the Sinker Cypress Background Frame and mounted the Clock to it and got it hung on the wall. I love it. It represents me and my Life. The Saw Blade is my Love and Passion for the Sawmill and sawing the Sinker Cypress Logs into lumber that I pull from the River. The Sinker Cypress Boards that are the Background are a finished product from that Passion. The Coonhound treed with a Coon in the top of the tree is my other Love and Passion for Coon Hunting and the Love of Dogs. The Clock represents my Time here on Earth and Reminds me that Every Second is Precious and to Live Life to the Fullest like that Second is your Last Second. Don't let the Battery of your Life go Dead without doing all the things you Love to Do. The saying, " Don't put off tomorrow what you can get done Today" is not just about Work. It is about Life. Go Live It!!

Mr. Jack is right. I love it and what you wrote is also the truth. That's why I went to WI this year to see my Friends. Dave

Hunting

Thanks Mr. Jack and Dave. I didn't need another clock but when I saw one this guy had done with a deer in the center I got the idea about the Coonhound and he said he could do it. He did a great job. Mr. Jack the Hounds are doing ok and look pretty good one trip then not so good the next. Been bad dry but we got a couple inches of rain last week so should be better. Me and Dr. Snow was out there last night with Bob down river in the boat and had made one tree then the rain moved in. Rained all night slow and steady and still going off and on today. Hoping it quits by dark so we can go again. My back is better than it was but has reached a point that it don't seem its going to get Any better than it is now. I can hunt slowly but fall every night. The other night I fell face first in the River when my right hip lit up in pain and buckled. All I could do was go down. Dr. said I have a Compression Fracture and Hernuatied Disc but when your unemployed and no insurance ain't much you can do but just suck it up and move on best you can. I'm looking into options now and might have surgery in the near future. They say they make a small cut and cut the part of the Disc that's pressing on the nerve and it is better right then. said you wake up knowing you have been fixed. Its just paying for it is the problem but I'm working on that and hope to know something Soon. Hope you hitting the woods regular and treeing a few. Give me a shout when you want to make a round. I'm slow walking but that makes you get to hear them tree Longer, Take Care.

Dave that's the way I try to live, if its something I want to do I try not to put it off because we don't know if we will be here tomorrow. Mr. Jack and I made that trip a couple weeks ago to Mr. Ed's to hunt and people that knew I was hurting bad tried to talk me out of going but like I told them, My Pain today my be twice as bad next week and if I don't go now things may happen and I may never get to go again. Time Ticks on and we never know what the next Second holds for us. Hope all is good up your way and the weather is good to you and Lou so yaw can get a few more treed, Take Care.

RAIN OUT

Light, steady rain all day today but right at dark the heavy stuff moved in and its coming down in buckets now. Supposed to rain all night and all day tomorrow into tomorrow night. From drought to floods, never seems to be an in between anymore. Couple of pictures from this past week of hunting. Me and Bob. Snow was along one night so I got a chance to be in a picture. Probably be awhile before that happens again. I'm kind of like Bam, a Loner.

RAIN and COLD

Thanks Tommy. Missed two nights of hunting due to the rain but its moved out for now and the next 3 nights look good. But Friday and Saturday we supposed to get in the low to mid 20's. Might make a quick hunt each night before it gets to far below freezing but that will be it. Heard that Bob's littermate brother won another first place in a hunt. That's 2 first place out of 3 hunts. Another brother in Wisconsin is treeing coons by the wagon loads I hear. Looking like this cross Mr. Ed made is the right kind for sure. I need Bob to get a little more consistent but I will take most of the blame on that. Being hobbled like I am I'm not staying out long each night so therefore not putting in the time required to get him clicking each and every night. Started taking more steroids and feeling a little better so hoping I'm getting past the worst of it and we will be back close to normal soon. Picked up another job of closing in some of a screened in porch and making into a Pantry. Start that this morning. Hoping to be done by mid next week and slip in another trip to Mr. Ed's if the weather will cooperate. We will have to wait and see. Don't like it below 25.

Getting Better!

Not much to report about hunting. Haven't been in almost a week because of rain or just hurting to bad. Finished up that Pantry job yesterday and finally took the advise of several people and went to a Chiropractor today. This woman knows her business and I was impressed and already in less pain. She measured my hip height on each side and the right side where I'm hurting was 6" higher than the left. She said a Force such as falling had it knocked back and locked up and it would take a Force to get it back right. Told her to Get'er Done. She had me lay face down on a table that had moveable sections and I felt it moving then she said this is gonna hurt and, BAM! She had her hand pressing on the SI Joint then pushed a lever with her foot that dropped the table and popped my hip back in. Yes it hurt and Yes I hollered out like a Girl, lol! Man the Stars popped out in my eyes but then she had me get up and I could walk better and stand straight up instead of stooped over. She checked my hip height again and they are within an inch of each other and I'm going back Friday for another round. I'm icing my back now and she said rest until Friday but after that she believes I will be good to go. Almost 6 weeks of constant pain is about to be gone, Praise the Lord. I shouldn't have waited so long but kept thinking it would get better on its on. Will be glad to be back hunting my hounds like they deserve.

Steve

I sure enjoy reading your post during these cold winter months up here. Looks as though we are froze up for awhile and calling for 10 more inches of snow on Friday. Wind chills tomorrow to 25 below. I have the hounds in nice insulated boxes with plenty of bedding and flaps on the doors. They get the best feed I can give them and heated water pails so it don't seem to bother them. Tramp II is getting along well here and don't seem to mind the cold. Take care and keep the post going.

Great looking Clock

Hunting pics & stories as always. Glad the chiro might have you back to feeling better. Makes it tough when the mind says it's time to hit the woods, BUT the body says no because it hurts too much. Been that way for years with a bum knee, but still hunt alot. Just takes a guy a little longer to get there, but that's why you have a good tree dog- they'll wait till you get there!!!

If you ever decide to make any more of those clocks, I'd really be interested in having one for my trophy/tv room. Just let me know what you would need for it. Take care, Ron.

On the Couch

Thanks Scott and Ron. Still no hunting stories to tell as I'm still sidelined on the couch. Went back Friday to the Chiropractor and she said she didn't want me doing Anything for a while yet. Said I have to give it time to heal. I go back Monday, Wednesday and Friday and after that she said 80 percent of my pain should be gone and I should be able to get back to living life. Sitting on the couch with ice on my back has got real old quick. Going to have to retrain Bob and Bam by the time we crank back up. Probably going to be a few nights at first that I won't talk about, lol. Bob's brother, Crash, won another 1st place to make him Nt. Champion with 3 first at 17 months old. Congrats to him and Rocky on their wins. And to Mr. Ed for making this great cross.
Ron those clocks were 94 bucks to make plus shipping to get them here then I made the Sinker Cypress background for it. If you want I can put you in touch with the guy that did them and you could pay him and get him to ship you one. Get you some old heart pine barn wood and that would look great for a background. Hope all is going good with that litter of pups you have and good luck with them. Should be some dandies. Take Care.

Back to Hunting

Thanks Ron, yaw have a Merry Christmas. Took Bo and Bam out Tuesday night for the first time in a while and they got treed 710 yards deep. Black Branch Swamp was flooded and I liked to have Rolled the Rhino getting to them but somehow managed to get all 4 tires back in the mud and get within 75yds of them. But Bam had left and was trailing off a couple hundred yards away. Bo stayed and it was a big den took him back to Rhino and Bam fell treed 340yds deeper. Got to him and it was a huge oak and I didn't find the coon. Came on home. Snow came out last night and we took Bob down river in the boat. He got in the Country Quick, opened about a dozen times and fell treed. He was on a big oak up on top of a bluff about 15' high that used to be the old River Bank many years ago. We were a Quarter Mile from the River and the Boat and all I could think about was how many Sinker Cypress were buried under our feet as we walked to Bob Treed. We found 2 coons and the one highest up to the left looked like the Ghost Coon, Albino. The more I shined his eyes then would hit him with the bright the Whiter his face and neck looked to me and Snow but could never get to where we could see him good or get good pictures. The one lower down on right side of tree was For Sure a Regular Coon so that's the one I knocked out to Bob. We came on home trying to not push my luck to far with this nerve pain as I'm still hurting just not as bad.

BO and BOB

Snow and I took Bo and Bob downriver in the boat last night. Still trying to tree the Albino Ghost Coon and get a good Video and Pictures of him but last night wasn't the night. Started off they did a Lot of hunting, covered a lot of ground but nothing until they looped back and was .63 miles downriver from us. They hit a raggedy track and worked it for a while and Bo treed first then Bob. We took boat on down and got close then walked in from there. They were in an awful thicket treed up a medium size tree but we couldn't see higher than 10' because of the canopy of privet hedge. We rode upriver and cut them again even though my Sciatic Nerve was killing me. They ended up in the River with Bo getting across but Bob hung up in and oak top in swift water and we tried a Rescue but he got himself loose before I got to him. He ended up bayed in a hole in the ground and got the Full Treatment from me when I got there and Bo ended up treed on other side 311yds in with a Big Coon. He was mad with me for leaving Coon to run again but I didn't bring the gun, left it at boat with Snow keeping Bob quite because I was hurting bad and didn't feel like toting it. On couch tonight because last night and today were bad with this pain. I'm praying for a Christmas Miracle because nothing else has worked. Probably a Surgery in my near future. Merry Christmas Everyone. Enjoy your Hounds and the Thrill of the Hunt Every Night you can.

Not a creature was stirring except Rocket the Racoon.
The light of the Moon had other critters scared to move about,
But I ain't no coward Rocket would Shout!
As he made his way down Black Branch Swamp,
He thought of the years that had passed and miles he had tromped.
Since he was just a little kitten coon born in a hollow corner fence post,
He was the Sow's favorite and she fed him the most.
Rocket grew and grew until he was the biggest coon in the woods,
Learned every trick to outwit the hounds and tree him they never could.
But there was a man and his hounds that lived on the Bogue Chitto River,
That had a hound that located with a Bawling Quiver.
Word on the Street and in the woods was he could tree Any Coon,
I'm to smart for that Ole Bluetick thought Rocket the Racoon.
Off in the distance he heard the 4 wheeler then silence as the Hunter parked,
Not long after came the Raging Bawls as Mr. Bojangles barked.
He had picked up Rockets trail the coon knew for sure,
Because where Bo opened Rocket had searched for food but only found a fishing lure.
Not really scared but out of respect for the reputation of this hound,
Rocket picked up the pace heading for a tree where he had never been found.
Reaching the Huge Turkey Pine he sank his sharp claws deep in the bark,
Up he went to his hiding place as he listened to the hounds bawls off in the dark.
Closer and Closer they came until he heard why all other coons were hid in fear,
That Long, Quivering Bawl that let the Hunter know the Coon is Here!
Rocket listened to the hounds Raging Bawls from way down below,
Then shut his eyes as the Hunters light lit up the tree with a Glow.
It wasn't a few minutes but seemed like a long time,
Rocket heard a Click, Pop, then close to his head a Whine.
He knew he was found so swung down on a limb and hung, looking straight into the Hunters Eyes,
Then dropped to the ground far below before the Hunter got another try.
Off he ran in the darkness feeling fear from his toes to his cheeks,
Racing through the Swamp under Briars and across creeks.
Headed home to a hollow tree near the hollow fence post,
Knowing if he didn't make it he would only be a Ghost.
One mile of running faster than he had ever been,
He reached the safety of his big old Den.
Mr. Bojangles wasn't far behind and slammed the tree with that Quivering Bawl,
Roaring his Rage so loud that a half mile away it echoed off a barn wall.
The Hunter reached the tree on this night before Christmas under the Full Moon,
And knew that him and his favorite hound had been beat by Rocket the Racoon.
As he pulled Bo off the Old Den Tree,
I heard him say, " Merry Christmas! " and knew he was talking to me!

Ho, Ho, Ho!!

BO, Bo, Bo!!

Can't believe a Year has come and gone. Here's my Christmas Poem, Merry Christmas All.

Coon Hunting Again

Been Coon Hunting the past few nights in a row. Dr changed my Medicine and I am getting some relief and able to Enjoy being out with the Hounds instead of hurting and being in a bad mood before I even leave the house. Been hunting out of my boat with the Jet Foot and having a good time. Bob treed a couple the other night and last night him and Bo double teamed one and it was a Big Boar. Even with the leaves off the trees it still took some time to find him in the viney tree he was in. I shook vines then backed out to the only spot I could see up the tree and blew the fire out of the squaller hoping he would come down and fight or go to top of tree. I did this twice and the second time I backed out to look he was at top of tree looking at me with a wide set of eyes. Haven't treed the White Coon I call the Ghost Coon yet but keep dumping them for a drop in his area every night. Sooner or later we going to get him treed.

Thanks Mr. Jack and I hope you had a Great Christmas and have a Happy New Year.

Smilin Bob. .

Took Bob down river in the boat last night and he got struck around 250yds in and started working a bad track. after a couple hundred yards it picked up and he started moving it out at a good pace. He hit the tree hard way in there and started treeing hard and had the swamp echoing with Hound Music. Half way to him the sound of his treeing was Echoing all around and if it weren't for the Garmin it would have been hard to tell the direction he was in. I sat down a few minutes and just soaked in the Beautiful sound of his treeing as he was really spitting them out and in the cool, clear night air it sure sounded wonderful. Got to him and he was treed on a Tall Popular Tree without a leaf on it and easy to shine. Found the coon quick and went back in to Bob and Loved him up good, took a few videos then knocked the coon out to him. He looked Outstanding on that track from start to finish. Since I'm back at it he had fur in his mouth last week, night before last and last night. He's starting to hit his stride again and hope I continue to feel good so I can keep him and Bam in the woods. Happy New Year to All.

Hello Steve

Sounds like you had a good night of hunting. I bet Bob sounded great spittin' that chin music out. If you don't mind me asking, in the picture of you leaning against the tree a few posts up........what is that on the barrel of your gun? I'm assuming it is a light. How does it work out for you when shooting?

Gun Setup

Nick that is a Streamlite Tactical light. That gun has a laser on end of forearm and a small picatinny rail on each side. Once I find the coon with my hat light I then turn on laser and the tactical light and its lights out for the coon. No more twisting the head light sideways on your head as you try to get your sights on the coon. I love the setup and the tactical light is Very bright and lights up the whole tree. Weighs almost nothing and it don't unbalance the feel of the rifle. Happy New Year!

NEW YEAR 2017

Happy New Year to you and your Family Scott and Good Luck with your Hounds in 2017 also. We have had Spring weather around here for so long that the Oaks have buds on them about ready to pop open but cold weather is on the way. We supposed to have 3 nights this week in the mid 20's with highs in the upper 30's. Freezing rain and some Snow maybe Friday night. Last week the hounds looked pretty good with Bob treeing some and Bo also. Then the rain started Saturday and didn't quit until late last night with us getting close to 5" of rain and had a Tornado on the ground just a few miles west and north of here. I rode there today and it was lots of trees down and power lines and poles still on the ground. River is up about 5 feet and I took the boat out yesterday and Black Branch Swamp is Flooded and will be several days before it drains out. I will take Bam tonight and cut him down the Cypress Slough across the road from the house. Hopefully he can get after one.

BAM

I took Bam night before last and cut him down Cypress Slough and he didn't go very far and struck a decent track and started moving it Up the Slough, back toward the road. I usually catch them if I can when they head toward the road but traffic has been very light lately so I let him work it out. He ended up crossing the slough that was deep with water because of the rains and the river being up. He treed less than 100 feet from the road on a big oak that leaned out over the slough. I saw the Coon peep at me with one eye on the way in. He was on a big limb that was over the slough so I knew when I shot him he would hit the water. I left Bam loose so he could get him quick I hoped but didn't happen quick enough. I knocked him out and Bam swam by him and then realized the Coon was behind him and when he turned around to grab the Coon it sunk to the bottom before he could get ahold of him. I got Bam and hooked him back and found a long heavy limb that I raked the bottom with trying to pull the Coon into shallow water but after 30 minutes of it I gave up. I hate to waste a Coon like this but things happen that we can't control. I give Bam plenty petting and we went to the house. Took Bob out last night and he got on a track in a lot of water and couldn't make it happen. My back and leg was killing me and swamp still flooded so we came home. Should be drained out some by tonight and Bo and Bob will get their chance to tree Rocket the Raccoon in Black Branch Swamp. We will see what happens when it gets dark. Haven't killed a deer yet this year. Looks like I will have to set in the Deer Stand to get one. So many acorns this year they haven't come to the yard for the grass I have planted. Going to set on the stand this evening and see if we can get lucky.
