New faces

Hope to break out a couple of new faces tomorrow morning...I've got a couple of little girls here in the yard that are about ready to see some action so I'll hope to introduce them tomorrow.

Gonna make a run out from the house tonight and see what me and Bo can dig up.

Richard...is Slam by way of Haze and Sally or did you have something else stashed away behind the shed?

Hunt

I took Bo out by himself tonight and had a pretty good hunt. I took the Ranger from the house and dropped him down a long wooded ditch bordered by a corn field. He didn't seem to want to just run the corn edge so he dove into the woods and made his way across before he struck...he tracked, located and treed good in about 20 minutes. I started heading back to the Ranger to get the camera and I had forgotten it so I didn't get pictures of that tree. He had the meat and did a nice job so I walked him back to the Ranger, headed home and got the camera.

I dropped him again, down the next ditch and I could see that he could hear Leinie barking back at the house...she's loud and sounds like she's treed. He headed that way, taking the long way around so I couldn't get in front of him. I figured it was OK anyway...he was gonna learn to not pay attention to other dogs when he got back there and realized they were in the pen. I got back in the Ranger and headed all the way back thinking I was going to have to overhaul every dog in the yard because they were really raising heck. When I got to the yard and shut the Ranger off...Bo was treed way on top the ridge above my house right along the fence...which was all downed trees and rough as a cob. Anyway, I shined the ridge from the house and I could see the coon so I headed up with gun in hand and the camera...it was on my land

It was so thick, it must have taken me a half hour to make it up that 200 yards of hillside...lucky me on my first night out in two months...I got up to where he was and there were down trees all around him but I could get up to him half ways decent to get a couple of shots.

Bo...belly rubbing and giving it his all..

Bo is a real nice young hound owned by Dave Savage from Ohio and he's out of Rabble Rouser and Annie. I like Bo a lot, he's extremely personable, has a real nice mouth and is an outstanding tree dog...can't help but like him. Dave has done a real good job with Bo because he listens real good too...

Now...I'll tell you what...it was so thick around that tree that I could not for the life of me find that coon. I know for sure he was up there because I could see his eyes from the house but I could not find him...and believe me...I looked...and looked.

Anyway, I praised him up good and made my way back down to the house which was another absolute nightmare on that hillside.

It was fun...

I feel good after getting over my bout with Lymes. I enjoyed being out but I remember again why I hate summer hunting. Thick brush, bugs, steep hillsides where you can't see the ground because of...thick brush...and bugs in your eyes...

It was still fun.

Good to see your back up and going Tom. Being down and out like that just makes you feel anxious. At least for me. I go stir crazy and make vids to pass the time.
I fired JJ and Fatboy Tater up Fri. night. Corn field chases are on. First drop I caught them at the river where coon have crossed on me before. Blondie used to swim this spot. Got the hell out of dodge.
Next drop boom treed. Tater popped a layup with JJ right behind him. Like you, I could see it way off, but not at the tree. Big red oak. I searched quite a while for it. The corn field chase lasted about 45 minutes and pounding on the tree wore them down.. They both walked behind me one the way out. LOL They both were a little sore yesterday. We'll be back at it tonight. Time to start conditioning for hyde season. Let the fun begin.

Scott

Good to see your feeling better and getting out Tom. I am finally back out and hunting once again after a year and a half now. A lot of people are more generous about coon hunting on their lands now with the price of diesel and corn at an all time high. Plus the kids are older now and can tag along for a couple of hours now. It felt really good to be out again!

Training day

Thanks for the well wishes, there's no doubt that it helps relieve the strain of not feeling well when a guy can get out and do things somewhat like we're used to doing it. Of course, I felt kind of stiff this morning but it's a good kind of pain, not like how it feels with being ill.

I have a couple of 4 month old females here that I thought were ready to see a coon for the first time. My rule of thumb is to have very low expectations and then be happy with any interest I see at this age. I've done this a lot and what I saw with these two is pretty similar to what I always see...hesitation...curiosity...anxiety and then slowly building aggression.

It should be fun to track their progress over the next couple of months or so before they go down the road.

Pups first exposure.

Both of them barked pretty good, it's just hard to get them both doing it at the same time. It's like I said, you shouldn't expect much from pups but if they show some interest early on like this, they will usually progress fairly quickly up to around 8 months of age. If they're willing to tag along with older dogs and if they contribute...that's a good situation.

I would have done more drag training this morning but I can't handle it by myself so giving these pups some exposure was a perfect way to spend a morning.

Getting back to Bo and Griz...it won't be long and folks will be seeing their names in the winner's circle and we'll have lots to share and talk about as we move forward into the fall competition season.

History

Pastor Mike posted these pictures on his Haze thread but it's historical in significance for me because there was a time when I didn't think we'd ever see Moose back in action like this.

This is what I was referring to as having Historical implications.

Dual Gr. Ch. PR T-Top Dark Timber Moose & Dual Gr. Ch. PR Soggy Bottom T-Top Midnight Haze.

I have a picture with Shaker, Shadow and Yank all on the same tree and that also is one for remembering...how often is it in our life times where we are so lucky to have that kind of dog power all in the same photo? At some point down the road, these dogs could have a huge positve impact on our breed so these kinds of memories are priceless.

Cats

I got another picture from a friend, not too far away from me. He got this on his game cam and it's kind of an interesting picture. I believe it's a female and cub from this year.

More trash to chase...eh?

This part of the country has a pretty good variety of game. Bobcats are not legal right around here but a couple hours north you can take one per season. I've got them right here around the house so more and more seem to be migrating into these big sections. The deer hunters buy out big leases and tie up a lot of land and it seems that since that has started happening and since the land has gone back more to the wild, we see more game like these cats moving in. We never used to see a bear around here but now it's not uncommon...and there are more coyotes than we need too...not to mention the odd wolf now and then.

Darn, had to take a phone call here at work and distract me. lol Talked to Tom over the weekend, finalizing the partnership on Griz. As soon as Dave puts the last cast win on him, Griz will be co-owned by Tom and me. This has been a hard decision for me. Do I keep him home and be just another nice red dog or let Tom and Dave bring him to the level he is capable of being? So with mixed emotions, I offered them the opportunity.

Remember

Yep, I remember those two Mike, I've got a lot of good memories like that stashed away in this old head.

For those of you who don't recognize those pups, that's Sid on the tree and Haze providing back up on the ground directly behind her.

I have a bunch of pictures from some old training sessions...I'll have to share some of them somewhere down the road.

I let a lot of years go by without ever taking pictures to document some of those good ol' hounds from back then...I don't make that kind of mistake these days, I have a lot of pictures and video to remind me of those good ol' days and good ol' hounds...more to come...eh?

Moose

Considering these last few months...you really gotta love it that Da Moose is back in action and helping us all enjoy this hunting game again.

Great picture Mike, that's Moose just like he used to be.

Back in action...

Dave came out last night and got back in action with Bo and Griz. It has been awhile since he has been out so I'd bet he feels it this morning but fall is just around the corner so the time is right.

He had some pretty good pictures on the camera this morning so looks like he had a pretty good night.

Bo and Griz...Gotta love the expression on Bo's face...

Griz..

Bo..

Got the meat...

This little guy has to practice his hiding skills...eh?

The dogs are a little thick but in excellent condition and ready for action. I was brush hogging all day yesterday and I could barely walk with my knees hurting so bad last night so I stayed home. Working that clutch and brake kills me when I over do it. I'll be back at it next weekend weather conditions permitting.

Summer isn't done yet so although the mornings are wonderful this time of year, the days and early evenings are warm and humid until late but you can sense it in the air that those cool, frosty nights of fall are just around the corner.

I really like these dogs, they've got great coon getting skills and wonderful personalities...nothing better!

Re: Back in action...

The boys are looking good Tom. We're having near perfect conditioning weather here.
I've fired JJ and Tater up the last few weekends. Had some struggles early. But we've worked thru most of them. I just needed to remember to run JJ by herself. Doh
I've done that the last two nights and she is looking real good. She even had a great track thru the beans last night. Them things are deep and a tangled mess. She ended it at a den tree. I still petted the hell out her for it. She ended up 630 yards from the truck. 300 plus yards thru them beans. I have a bright led lights on their collars and I could see her leap out of the beans once in a while. All I could was smile.
I need a new camera. I wore anther one out. Hope to get one soon.
Good to see your up and about. Now you need to get them knee's fixed. You've been talking about that for a while.
Take care. I need to work on the honey to do list. But a nap sounds WAY better. Them beans are killing me. Scott

Lookin' good

They're all lookin' good Buck...it won't be long and the steam will be blowing out of those wide open mouths...I can't wait.

Scott, if I would have had to walk through those beans last night...I would have had to call someone to come and get me

I feel pretty good today, the ache goes pretty quick since I got over my bout with Lymes. Thinking back now, I was probably battling it since around January. I'd go, bad knees or not, if the brush was off and the ground open but when I'm already sore, they like to give out if I mis-step so not worth the risk. I can take it pretty good if everything feels good to start with and it seems that I feel like that more and more so it's looking good for later this summer and fall.

It looks like we'll have a couple of real warm days later this week but then back to cooler weather both days and nights so the season is changing...and that's good.
