Now I have treed on corn stalks before but has anyone ever treed on a poke berry bush??? LOL!!

And you know what, the danged thing looked empty from where I was standing, an I thought I had a coondog!!

OMG was that ever disheartening, LOL!! Oh well sometimes its better to just laugh at them than it is to thump on the from embarrassment!!

Guys it was kinda funny. When I went in to the ole gal she was on a rough hillside with lots of small brush and briars. when I finally got kicked into where I could see what she was treed on, all that was there was a half dozen polk berry bushes.

When she would try to stand on one it would fall over onto the ground. I watched here for a minute and when she finally got the last one wallered to the ground, she kinda stopped for a minute and looked at me as if to say, "where did he go"?? I said well come on dummy, you can now see he ain't up there. Even though that drop wasn't so profitable from a coon catching standpoint, but I did get to take a hunt with my Dad who is now 88 and can only sit in the truck these days.

Thanks Jay, sorry to hear your not going to be able to go to the Oaks. Glad you got that buggy, I will be ready to go just as soon as I get back from the Oaks. I will then have a couple weeks before the zones to continue to tune on Holly. LOL she will need all the miles we can put on her to compete at that level.

Are weekends best for you?? If so we will get hooked up real soon. Thanks for the good wishes and we will see ya soon!!

Well I have already won and I have not left the house yet, LOL!! I was packing thing into my truck last night, linking up & Calibrating my garmin. I decided to run into town to fill up my truck. Got up this morning to go back over everything I was taking and couldn't find my Garmin. I realized I may have left it lay on the hood of my truck from the night before.

Well I started walking from my house to town (which is about two miles. About 1 1/4 miles from my house, there the danged thing layed in the grass just off the side of the road, still in perfect working order, except for a few abbraisions on the rubber from sliding down the road. So the Good Lord has already blessed me with this find, everything else will just be icing on the cake!!!

Thanks Terry, I sure enjoy hunting against the best out there, as it gives me a better perspective as to where I need to improve. I hope Ole Hanna didn't get too shook up on her ride home. Best of luck to you with her.

Jerry Lee, Ole Holly pulled out her cast win at the very end of the hunt, LOL! She scored 400+ but that wasn't quite enough to get into the top 16. I think 500 was the cutoff.

She did have another split tree by herself, good track, just came popping treed, but I couldn't find the danged coon. I think I had second strike and 1st tree on that. I know that coon was there but I sure couldn't get it to look. If I had that one I was in the big dance, LOL!!

But all said and done, Holly looked pretty good. It was exceptionally hot, which seemed to be effecting her striking ability, but she sure was getting treed quick. I had a 3 dog cast and dogs were split on every drop so we burned a lot of time shining each tree.

The guys I drew were really great sportsmen, we had a great cast, great guide, and dogs were looking pretty good, so yes it was a blast. I got to hunt with Mark Looney and his very nice hound, Big River Dan. If you recall, Dan won the Grand American and Southern English Days in I think 2012. I also drew a pretty nice blue tick female that was very balanced as well. She was a great strike dog that got hooked quick and didn't pull, we just weren't able to score her coons. Dan was quick off the strap, and independent hunting dog, that had good track speed, and a nice tree dog. Holly and Dan treed together on one coon with Holly just barely getting 1st tree, then Dan was split from Holly on the next drop and we found Dan's coon but not Holly's. I then was congratulating Mark on winning the cast when our time keeper told us we still had 7 or 8 minutes left in the hunt. After determining that we had 8 minutes to hunt, we cut just Holly & Dan head to head. Dan struck 1st with about 4 minutes to go, then about 1 minute later Holly opened once, straight out in front of us away from Dan. Dan was picking on a tree down in the woods to our right, and I told Mark he was surely in a bad spot as I was gonna tree Holly if she even sneezed on a tree, LOL. Well a couple minutes of Holly being quiet and then BAM!!! Holly throws a triple chop locate (of which I call her treed) and settles into her steady chop. I asked the time keeper how much time was left in the hunt and he said 1:03. Dan never covered in that minute. We went to the tree right along the edge of the cornfield, I hit the squaller and that ole coon started running around in the top of that tree like a grey squirrel. He started coming down the tree, and I thought he was gonna jump right off. But he didn't. Congrats were said again for the second time in the cast, but this time they were directed toward Holly & I, LOL. This was one of the most enjoyable casts I have ever had at a major event. Mark and the other guy were two of the finest sportsmen I could have ever had the opportunity to hunt with, and they both made that cast win very special to me even though Holly missed the Top 16. Great Hunters, Great Guides, Great Hound work, and GREAT SPORTSMANSHIP. Man it was a blast. Thank You to ALL who made that possible for me!!!

Oh and by the way, Tackett you were right, I am just now waking up. I was set up right along Salisbury road and didn't sleep for two days, so I was a bit comatose yesterday LOL!!!

Dave, one of your hunting buddies was camped beside me late Friday afternoon. I cannot remember his name off the top of my head, but he was telling me about you treeing a coon and not going to put it down and he said go ahead my dog needs a coon. He was an older fellow, super nice guy to visit with.

Doug, I know what you mean. I'm sorry as well that I didn't get to talk with you. Gosh so many people there, no wonder we never bumped into one another. I did buy me a DC50 and will be trying it out this week. Hope to get to hunt with you again this fall & you know that is now just around the corner. Good Hunting to you!!

Eric, thank you for your kind words. I did see some nice pups there out of Rico and man he sure put his stamp on their markings. They were marked a lot like him. The guys told me you were on the grounds, but like Doug, I never ran into you either. Good Luck at the Zones, I'm heading to Pennsylvania for zone 3, gonna try something different this year, so I probably won't run into you unless we both make it through the zones. Congratulations Dave and Holly!
I know you are very proud of Holly and rightfully so. Ain't nothing like like getting big wins when all cast members are packing coondogs and you edge em out at the last minute! That had to be an exciting hunt as well as the last few minutes being a tad nerve racking. Mark is top notch as well as his Dan dog and I am sure they are already hopeing for another draw with ya. Lol!

Thank You David. You are absolutely right that Mark and Big River Dan are both Top Shelf. Mark is with out a doubt one of the most respectable guys I have had the privilege to hunt with at a major event. He treated me with total respect all night long and for anyone who has ever judged a cast (especially so at a major event) You know and can appreciate just how nice it is to have that kind of an experience at that level. Marks hound, Big River Dan is without a doubt, the type hound that can win any event, and will be hard to beat anywhere/anytime. I know a coondog when I hunt with one and this little hound is a very nice one. At least I liked him very well.

Winning that cast was not near as gratifying to me as the way all handlers treated each other while competing for that cast win. That is what I will remember for the rest of my life. Great sportsmanship AND Good Dogs coming together on one night to create a memorable moment for this Ole man, LOL!!!

Well one more night of final tune up, Prolly Monday or Tuesday, and it will be rest time till we hit the Timber Friday night in Blairsville, Pa.

Good Luck to all the english hounds headed to the zones this year. Lets bring that championship back home!!!
