Next week...

We're looking forward to it also Jason, it's always a good time when we get together and pound these hills around here.

It's too early to predict the long range weather yet but the trend is cooler so I'd bet we'll have some frosty nights and mornings...which is about as good as it gets.

We got some much needed rain over the last couple of days to build up the ground moisture again, otherwise it was looking like some tough tracking but should be good now.

Hopefully Dave will leave a few alive to chase over this next week so we don't have to go so far and wide to find one Nah...we'll find one without too much trouble I think...

We'll be starting the season this weekend so we'll keep everyone posted on how it's going and what the coon population looks like...it will be good to be able to share some good pictures and stories with folks again as we move into and through the season.

JJ did a great job tonight with this wind. She tree twice. 1 coon in one and 4 in the other.
She treed at 230 yards and had the meat. I put the coon in my pack and she was gone. Just like old blondie used to do. She flat out straight lined it and treed at 580 yards. Never heard her strike on either track. Gotta love a hot nosed dog.
Tater got one. Thats like Charlie Brown getting a rock for halloween. LOL

Last night

Dave had one nice big ol' boar...26 pounds, laying out by the kennel this morining. Pretty nice hide for so early and real nice color so worth keeping for sure.

We'll see what we can drum up tonight...I'm gonna drag these old aching bones out and see what happens.

I went walking up a valley and treed five. And thanks the vest works good carrying all those hides out.

Opening night

I loaded up these old bones and went out last night with Dave. We took Griz, Bo and Gun and had a good night. I have to pick my spots to get to some trees but I got to hear what I couldn't make it to so all was good.

We started out on a windy ridge and the dogs missed on the first two trees, about 5 minutes apart. There was a coon there somewhere but he wasn't in the trees they treed on.

We switched to some lower laying land and from there things turned.

Griz doing his thing...

Griz and Bo...gottal love the intensity Griz shows...

Bo getting into it...

Lovin' it...

Big ol' tree...eh?

The whole crew...

Gun was in on these trees too but the rest of the pictures have him blocked out...behind the tree or blocked out by one of the other dogs so just one showed up good.

The dogs did good, we treed 7 coons in 5 trees with a den thrown into the mix. It was a windy night on the ridges but later a shower or two came blowing through and down in the valley it was a little more calm. Overall, I thought the dogs did real good and they're starting to look the part...hard and in good shape.

More to come...

Great pics, Tom

That one tree would have taken a while for Griz to get sawed down. lol

Tree Hogs

Nice pics Tom , I didn't see but one tree that all those hogs could get on at the same time, and i bet that ole Griz thought he would never get dug into that big boy. (really nice).

Cotton wood

We have a lot of deep coulees and valleys and when one of those big ol' cotton woods takes root at the bottom and is protected from the wind...they can really grow big and this is a great example of it.

Here's another picture that kind of puts it in perspective...

I thought I'd share some fall colors...all the leaves are off these trees already but for a little while...it's amazing to wake up to these kinds of scene every day...

Only the hands of God could paint those pictures and I'm so lucky to have witnessed it yet again.

Just looking at it and taking a deep breath of chilled morning air is so good for the soul, how blessed we are to witness and be a part of it each fall.

Something special...

You guys don't need to bring something special...you just need to bring yourselves...

It looks like it should be a pretty good run of weather while you're here with decent days and cool nights so it won't get much better than that.

Dave went out Monday and Tuesday nights for a little while each night and bagged a few each night so we've got a little seed stock in the freezer.

We're looking forward to it...I like to visit with good friends and listen to good dog work and I'd say I'll have it both ways starting tomorrow night.

Updates

Don't worry Tim...if there's one thing we're never short on while those guys are visiting, it's good pictures and plenty of updates. You can live it vicariously through us all and I'll promise to be thinking about you while me and Buck are standing on the road listening to the action. Nah...we'll make it to most trees unless they get too far up the side of these bluffs but we'll give it a good try anyway.

I have lots of pictures from years past and some video also and those are something we can keep with us for a long time, even after we can't get through the woods anymore...we love to share so hopefully we'll keep you busy watching the action and reading the play by play.

Heading North

Jason is on his way to my house so we can get packed up. We'll pick up Buck a little before 3am in the morning and make our way north. Looking forward to the next week. We have a quick stop to make in Wabash, Indiana to drop off one of my females to be bred to Moose.....frozen style...

Tom, tell Dave to eat some carbs tomorrow because the extra energy will be needed. We are chomping at the bit to turn dogs loose.

Upcoming week

Nice buck Carl...seems like you do that pretty regular, year after year.

Mike should be on the road already quite a few hours by this time, seeing as how the time zone puts them an hour ahead of here. Just think, they can knock an hour off their trip just be crossing a line....somewhere....

Scott...that's a good night of hunting...not so easy to get up afterwards though. The coons look pretty nice too, some are carrying a real nice fur coat already and those seem to be close.

Dave came out for another drop or two last night...I don't know how he did. He came out a little later and I was out cold in bed by 9:30 PM so didn't see or hear when he got home. I'll check out the bench out by the kennel to see if he did any good and then I suppose I'll have some work cut out for me when I get off work tonight.

I'm hoping and praying that Pastor Mike, Buck and Jason have an uneventful and safe trip north as they move through today...we'll be looking forward to seeing them some time tonight.
