Pup

That has to be a Willow and Haze pup...eh?

It's good to see a another young hound learning his business like that and starting to get with the program at just about the right time of year...

We are seeing some rain again and only 73 for a high today and down into the mid 40s tonight...what a blessing! I love this time of year when the days and nights start to cool down and dark comes just a little quicker every day...I can't wait for frosty mornings and the hunting season right around the corner.

Thanks for sharing the picture of the pup...I love to see that stuff.

Guess who this pup is out of

Well this pup did a good job last night. She split and had 2 coons and is only just over 7 months old. Hope she turns out just as good as her daddy or maybe even better.

Nice

What you're experiencing with those young dogs isn't exactly an every day occurrence BB...it's pretty special. There are lots of folks who talk about how well young dogs are doing but when they do what Autumn and Summer are doing at that age, you can rest assured that you have something really good going on.

I've seen lots of good ones come and go over all these years but one thing is pretty much always the same...when you find a good young prospect that is willing to track and tree at that age, they always go on to be top dogs. There will be a stretch of time when they go through puberty where they'll make you crazy but I have never seen one that starts like that, not turn out to be a really good hound.

You should be excited about what's happening with those young dogs and you should have a lot of fun for a long time going forward. I'm always interested to see and hear how it's going...it sounds so familiar...

I have a few little surprises stashed away around here also and it won't be long and the leaves will be shaking again.

Tom

Just got in a little drop tonight with Griz and Caleb's pup out of Gun and Leinie he calls Nate. Treed a couple and Nate got up on the tree and let a few barks go. I think he will flip the switch come kill season.

Pup...

Hey Tim...it's good to hear that the pup is getting a chance to grow into being a coon hound. The timing is right with season just around the corner and I'd bet that his pup will turn into somethingd worth following by the end of the season.

We had a wonderful morning here in Wisconsin...cool...clear and heavy dew on the ground...it has the feel of fall for sure. The older dogs are getting restless as the days get shorter and I'm looking forward to cool nights in the woods as we start to wear some of the fat off these nice hounds here in the yard.

I'll look forward to more updates and to sharing our adventures and pictures of good hounds simply doing their jobs in these hills and bluffs of west central Wisconsin.

Training day 1

Had some action around the place today...

Stretched...to pieces...that's some real fearce action..

Can't get at the real deal...than attack the source...eh?

These pups are 10 weeks old and are getting to be a handful already...pretty nice crew to this point.

The weather is turning...cooler days...cooler nights...it won't be long now and we'll have some action around here.

By the end of this week, we're supposed to see low 40s over night..and that will be a blessing for sure...

It will be fun to track the action from here on out through the fall and winter...I'm looking forward to it.

Tom looks like you will have your hands full pretty soon, the little guy is not gonna let the bigger ones get the best of the exercise.

Pups

Yep...she's a little pistol Scott...all the makin's of a good one and with a great attitude.

Those pups are piled up as strong as it gets and it will be interesting to see how they act going forward...they've got the foundation, now we'll have to see how well they'll be willing to be built into something special...

The weather is moderating and the time is right to start messing with these pups and dogs...I'm looking forward to it.

Dagger is ready and will see the woods every night we go. My guess is that he'll be a full blown coon dog but the time the snow flies and then we'll see what we can do with him. His biggest test is that he has to convince me that he's got what I'm looking for...I think he does.

Jr

That's good to hear Carl..it's always fun to watch those youngsters learn their business and especially when they show something good now and then.

Education...Opportunity...Repetitions...that's the formula for success with young dogs. Honest evaluation of progress is also a necessity because if a dog progresses when given good opportunity, then it's easier and easier to keep giving them the repetitions they need to finish into a good dog.

I'm glad you're enjoying the process Carl, that's what it's really all about.

Do You Know This Hound

I noticed you have been guessing Hounds lately. Do You Know This One. Picture was taken on 8/14/2012. Your Friend, Dave

Posted by topdog on 08-16-2012 01:34 AM:

Dog?

I even saw the other half of that pair

That's gotta be Ace...it's the tree style that gives him away...eh?

The rest of those pictures look real good too, that's a nice young Blue dog you've got there Dave and that young dog is something special by the looks of it. It takes good stock and then a good touch with young dogs to have them turn out like that so a credit to you and how you mess with them.

I kept a male back out of the litter I have now...we'll see who he takes after and then see how it all ends up...I love the process Dave...nothing better that seeing it happen.

Hussler

Hey Tom thought i would give you a update on Hussler. He got a 1st and 2 wins on the bench. Very nice cross.

Tim

Posted by topdog on 08-19-2012 05:39 PM:

Cross

Yes, that was a real nice cross Tim and hopefully...if Cherry cooperates...we'll have that done again before winter. She would usually come in right around the end of October, when we really wanted to hunt her hard but...I'd rather see that cross made again while we can so we'll get it done when she comes around.

It has been dry as a bone around here...the night time temperature is pretty good but we need some moisture if we expect to have good nights in the woods with these young dogs. Gun and Dagger are in good physical shape so it shouldn't take too much time to get them back into hunting shape. Yank is a little thick at the moment but he's one of those dogs that gets himself into shape quick once he gets woods time.

I hope to get Gun into a couple of competition hunts this fall but I need to get my old self into shape if I expect to keep up with him. I've been walking the road up the hill so I'm working on it

I appreciate the updates Tim, Katie is doing a real nice job in the woods and will get a lot of woods time this fall. I hope to get a good bunch of pictures starting next weekend...if we get some rain...but that will make the beginning of the new season for me...and I'm looking forward to it.
