"Projects" are what keeps it interesting. They may be small but they sure are scrappers. Those big lazy Wisconsin coons just fall out and lay there. These little Tennessee coons will actually climb down the tree and try to whup the dogs. You have to be tuff and in shape (dog or man) to coon hunt in Tennessee.

When the guys get back...ask them about these "lazy" Wisconsin coons. I'm thinking that Sam, Frog, Wilson and Wilber will never be the same after this week....but it's all good....

We had another good night last night...pictures later on....

Samantha, Wilbur and Mr Wilson are all sissies anyway. I have heard that a dog learns from it's owner. Frog is the only one with any "heart".

Thursday night...

We went again last night and once again, we had a great hunt with really good dog work and we got some good ones again.

This picture shows all the dogs that were on the hunt last night...

JJ, Yank, Samantha and Gun...in no particular order...

The object of their desire...

We got a bunch more pictures of the coons and some pup training this afternoon...more to come.

Tom, Dave, Buck, Mike and Wendal,
Just wanted to say thanks for an awsome time. It's just what this old soul needed. Been a while since I've been picked on and laughed that hard at the same time. Didn't think Mike had that in him.
You Va. boys have a SAFE and speedy trip back to Va.

This week

Mike, Buck and Wendell are on the road towards home as of early this morning. We went one last time last night and treed a couple more but we called it a night and turned in a little earlier because of the long trip ahead of them. Probably not early enough...but earlier...

I'll post a few more pictures from this last week as we go...
Wilson is the big dog treeing hard with the studded collar. He's just a green pup but has good potential...this was in the afternoon yesterday when we did some pup training...

This was last night...when his trigger tripped

It looked and sounded a lot better than the pictures can show...he connected the dots yesterday with just a little ground work and from what I saw and heard by the end of the night last night...he'll make is daddy proud.

More to come...

Scott...it was all in good fun...those guys were just relieved that it was someone else punching holes in the sky with a rifle...instead of them. Last night...I missed my share...which is...like...really rare...but...it happens I guess

All it really means is that you are now a proud alumni of the infamous...School of shooting...

Oh my goodness, he must be a littermate to Wendy. That sure was some cross. But why is his head always sticking up above the other dogs in the pictures? And what is that white foamy stuff all around his mouth? What a pedigree. Is there a dog in his pedigree that was not a top reproducer? It sounds/looks like Haze will be moving on up on that top reproducers list in 2013.

Last week...

I see that the guys are home safe and sound...that's all good!

I have a lot of photos from last week so will post a few here and there until all are represented here.

Mike and Frog...pretty unique perspective

Buck and Wilson...

Wendell and Samantha...

This is the gang that hunted on Thursday night...Wendell, Mike, Buck and Scott. It was a great night of hunting with real good dog work and good results...

We had a great time this last week. I was real happy that Scott was able to hunt with us on two different nights...it was a blast. Dave G. also got to come up and hunt one night and it also turned out to be a good night of hunting with good results.

Hunting with dogs is about more than harvesting coons...it's an avenue that allows good friends to get together and just enjoy the process. We had breakfast together, enjoyed hours of great conversation...did a little shopping and just enjoyed the time we had to spend together.

More to come...

It sure was good to see Scott and Dave G as well. Looking forward to it again.

I think Buck told me he was sore after lifting those coons.....

The dogs are looking much better today and are ready to get back at it.

I haven't had a chance to go through the pics on my camera but I will sometime this week.

Help Out

Us Old fellows are blessed with nice young friends and sometimes we have to crawl under a truck or anything else to help out. Great pictures and looks like you guys had a great time. Glad you had a safe trip. Your Buddy, Dave

Posted by topdog on 11-06-2012 01:47 AM:

Great time...

It was a great time Dave, we had good hunts, great dog work and we only climbed a couple of bluffs so all was good...

Richard...you're right...if there's anything better than seeing the pieces fall into place like this...I don't know what it is...

If your smile was as big as what Buck had on his face last Friday night...then it's something I wish I could have seen in person...gotta love it..

Here are a few more photos from last week...
JJ & Samantha

Gun & Samantha...

Gun & Yank..

Frog & Yank...

Samantha...

Samantha doesn't have a lot of red on her...but it was enough to be on this hunt. She's got a lot of heart and grit and she got plenty of chances to have both tested over last week. Like I said before...it's more than just the dogs or the hunt, it's about getting good people together to enjoy good times.

I have just a few more pictures left and all related to doing a short pup training session...folks have to use their imagination to really picture the sights and sounds but there are some consistent truths that are very obvious in those pictures and we see it again and again...and that's the way it should be...eh?

Training

I have a few more pictures from a short training session done with all the younger dogs that were in the pen...all at the same time. I suppose my philosophy is pretty well known to folks who have read my books or who have spent any time around me when messing with younger dogs...I usually end up apologizing up front for saying what I have on my mind and I always try to project the fact that it's "take it or leave it" when ever I talk training but, there are some simple truths about starting dogs and if they are followed, success rates go up.

Anyway...enough of that...here are some pictures of these pups in that short training session and there is something the same about all of them that tells us that these are good prospects and that they are showing small traits that will allow them to learn under any circumstance...

So...what's the secret?
Good foundation...education...opportunity...repetition....that's it.

Being a dog man or woman helps but that's something that either is or it isn't.

OK...here's two more...

This is how it starts...everything else above is how it turns out.

My point with this is that it takes a little effort but if the steps are in place, the success ratio goes up so dramatically that it's almost hard to believe. Give your good Red pups a chance...invest in them like we do and then enjoy the real pleasure of being in dogs.

In another year, some of these pups will be the stars of these stories...life is good...eh?

The pups all look like they are going to make nice adult dogs with a little woods time. They are lookers too. Good Job Tom. Dave
