Deaf dog

I have a leopard that just turned two who is deaf. My Vet said there is nothing wrong with her ears physically. She is not from a double merle breeding. Father is black and tan in color mother is leopard spotted. She is really coming along and turning into a really good tree dog. Anyone see this? advice?

I would guess, both dogs were double merles with out it being real noticable or something hard to say, might just be deaf also for no apparent reason, sort of like people

I'd bet the b&t sire was carrying the Merle gene and this perticular pup got it. Or like said above, she's deaf for no real reason

Who was the breeder?
This is what happens when people dont understand how the merle gene is passed. If the black and tan parent carried the merle gene as a recessive and is bred to a merle, 25% of the litter could be doubles. Was she deaf from birth?

Could it be from inbreeding?

I had a little black and tan colored female deaf. She was really coming on like gang busters, at 12 months old she got run over by a car crossing a road.

Thank you Mike(great info) and everyone you replied.
This dog is from my breeding, i sold her as a pup and bought her back last summer at about a year old. I spoke to the man who owned her last night and she took a bad fall off a cliff last summer about a month before I got her back. (Possible answer)
Sir is black and tan, he sired 3 litters of pups with 3 different leopard spotted females, no problems in any litters.
Dam is leopard spotted, this is her third litter, never had a problem with any pup.
All the other pups from that litter that I know of have no problems.
All pups had little to no white.
(Could it be from inbreeding?) Don't know, is this something that would come out in an inbred cross?

was she deaf before the fall, maybe she got knocked good and that did it, not sure if it could but worth a shot

They can be deaf for reasons other than double merle. Sometimes the dark ones are deaf too but it's rare. It's deaf now so there's only one decision to make.

I'd hunt her. Guess I just got a soft spot for handicapped dogs. As a side note my aunt is a professional sign language interpreter and she had a deaf dog when I was young that new over 30 different commands by sign language. It was a double Merle Australian Shepard.

I knew a man that won a lot of nite hunts with a deaf dog. She didnot ever leave a tree. Pressure did not exist.

Thanks again for the replies.
This dog is not a cull, she was on 4 lion trees last week and did great from track to tree. If there is a chance this is hereditary and she could pass it on I would spade her. That's what I'm trying to decide.

if you get one of those shock collars that vibrates and teach her to come to the vibrate you won't lose her either, it would work just fine, i think she'll make a fine dog
