NHBA

Does the hound also receive championship points? Will they be hunting amongst other youth or will they hunt against adults also? Are they just keeping track of the youth as they go out to hunt. The youth has to join the NHBA?

This will only be at NHBA Sectional hunts. If a youth handles the dog through the entire hunt then that's how they get points. The dog still receives it's championship points like any other hunt. The youth does not have to be a member of NHBA nor does the parents but we would encourage the parent to become an NHBA member if they aren't already. If a club wants to schedule an NHBA sectional then I'm the one to get ahold of

The kids will have to hunt against the adults just like any other hunter. I understand the argument about a kid having a disadvantage hunting against adults but we as sportsmen should look out for the youth in these hunts also. Don't let someone take advantage of them just cuz they're a kid. Let this be about what the dog(s) do. I'd like to think this won't happen from anyone in a cast. The youth will still get participation points for handling a dog even if they don't win

Always great to hear of new youth programs!

Are points awarded for participation and category wins in the bench shows?

Posted by MIKE CARDER on 12-20-2014 06:54 PM:

Youth program.

Its really not just for the youth. Its just they are allowed to participate and receive points. Now in coonhounds I think they have what's called YEP for the youth.

What points do the get if they scratch or their dog is scratched, maybe for nor being able to catch them.

We aren't doing points for the show Dan.
If for some reason the dog gets scratched in the cast then the kid will still get 5 participation points

Pretty bad I don't trust the adults down here joe , and you know the few people I'm talkin about! They would screw anybody and I mean anybody for a cast win ! Takes the fun out of it , I love the youth hunts and watchin the kids have fun . Very good idea for the kids as long as the club has a trustworthy judge to make sure they get treated fair . And not expectin the others to just give it to them but not take advantage of them

Ok I feel like I need to clear up some things. When we put this together and we put in there no help to the youth, what we meant was the kid must know the dog well enough to strike it in, and be part of the cast by themselves. If the parent wants to go along and help catch the dog then fine that's acceptable. Although I would expect the other cast members to help also. The kid also must know enough to be able to vote in any question that would come up. The NHBA board is who came up with these rules and we thought this would be a great way to get kids involved. It seems that there's a lot of negative responses coming out about this. We are looking at adding the show as part of this too. Guys and gals I'm sorry if you don't agree with everything we decided. This was not Joe Brown's decision to make these rules. This was a panel of beaglers, myself included. We thought we had a good thing going here. This is our first year of trying something like this. Give it a chance and if we need to tweak it a bit next year we will. I appreciate all of the input I've gotten from everyone whether it's texts, calls or PM's on here. Whether they are good or bad I still listen to them but let's give this a chance folks!

Joe, It's great to have a program for juniors. I do agree that the child should learn the rules in case of a voting situation. It is good to allow the parent or someone to help the child if a rule needs explained or to help catch the dog. I would expect every handler on the cast to make it a great experience for the junior. The juniors that I have ran with have been proficient handlers with excellent and fair attitudes. It is best for them to understand the scoring as the cast goes along. With 4 dog casts, and by choosing fair judges, the youth of our sport will very likely be treated with respect and fairness. Zero tolerance for anything to the contrary will guarantee a great youth program.
