How many have a dog that will run and tree but not a competition dog?

Coon dog

I want a competition hound but usually only end up with a decent pleasure dog.

I agree that top level comp dogs are often not a pleasure to hunt but a real pleasure dog will be competitive in most hunts. A true pleasure dog trees a lot of coon and a dog that trees coon can win hunts.

If it re-cuts like it fires in there on the first drop, if it doesn't return to trees, if it doesn't have to go check out what strange dogs are doing and if it doesn't check back in then a pleasure dog can be a successful comp dog too.

You have just pointed the difference in a truly good comp dog and a pleasure dog. And for me the hardest of the things you mentioned to come up with is the dog that will recut like he should. Guess that's one reason I mostly just pleasure hunt.

Part of the secret is to hunt sections big enough to re-cut in. Many pleasure hunters turn loose tree a coon and move spots. Making a habit of treeing that coon and re-cutting from that tree. Another is tree habits. Tie the dog back the moment you get to a tree not leaving it loose while shining a tree. Dogs begin to know what to expect and what's expected of them.

The more I think about it, I really had no business commenting on this thread since most of my competition hunts were 30 years ago when dogs mostly stayed together. Also I have never owned a truly good competition dog. My thoughts came from the fact that when I did take my pleasure dog to a local hunt they usually did pretty well. But the playing field has changed a bunch since then and I am sure what it takes to win has changed also. Another thing is that local hunts are not all equal. If you go to a local hunt around Seneca MO where Cheyenne and Team Mafia and Lane Denny and others show up, this local hunt can have some of the best competition dogs in the country in it. My hats off to you guys who train and hunt the true competition dog. Us pleasure hunters can and do put up with some things you guys won't and don't.

Coon dog

Jennifer hit the nail on the head, she listed some must haves if you want a competition dog vs pleasure dog. I have hunted coon dogs for over 60 years and have only owned 4 to 5 dogs that were both competition and pleasure dogs in one package. I have owned a bunch that were a pleasure to hunt, but lacked the tools to be a competition dog. I have owned several really good competition dogs that were NOT a pleasure to hunt. Finding a dog that is both is a real challenge or at least for me. Dave

Kinda like finding a winning racehorse that can plow your garden.

Cheyenne pleasure hunts alot and enjoys his dogs and anyone that knows him very well know that if there was never another comp hunt he would still hunt. So for him ours are dual purpose. The difference for him in pleasure hunting is we can walk at a pace attainable for our 3 year old grandson and myself and we can drive closer when possible, my favorite!!
Tom, pleasure hunters and those that have been out of the game for 30 years are welcome at our club! I'm sure your dogs would do just fine.

Coon dog

I only have one coon dog at the present time, she is a Dual Grandnite Champion and excels in competition. Hunts a little to wide just for pleasure hunting. I enjoy a real good competition dog, but my true love is a cold nosed trailing hound that's deadly accurate when it trees. I just love to be in the woods with this type of dog, just me and the dog. Listening to the dog cold trailing, with a bawl mouth ringing up and down these mountain hollows, giving that distinct locate bark, then rolling over into a steady chop tree mouth. Folks, it just does not get any better than this, at least to me. Dave
