Fifty Years Ago At The Nite Hunts

Fifty years, ago i was 16 years old on my first night hunt, i drew a couple, of local hunters, by the name of Bill Knab, and Carl Hanselman, Bill passed on a couple of years ago, but i still call, Carl, every other night or so. Use to be, it was fun, to go out on a nite hunt, with someone you had heard of but never met. Now the rules won't let you visit, it's not really a hunt, no more, it's all about winning no matter what, if you can hear an old wind water pump, squeak, you say strick my dog. Use to be you met your next friend, at a night hunt, you have more in common with him, than you do your own family. Night hunt numbers, are down and they ain't no wonder, part of coon hunting, is visiting, shareing, your time with a stranger. Those guys 50 years ago, were not interested, in winning, at all costs, they were haveing fun. They would, just as soon, as give you the win, in fact, they'ed preferr, that the new kid, got the win, they got a big kick out of that.

Thanks Mr. Brooks. I was discussing this same thing yesterday with a young man. We also concluded that knowing the pedigrees of these dogs today like the old timers did. Doesn't seem as important to many.

The hardest thing for an old guy to realize is it’s not his game no more. We came from a time when there were hunts every weekend all within driving distance to were it is now I got one that’s thirty miles the others are about an hour drive or more about 3 of them. They say start a club well all the shakers and movers that kept a club running have passed away here. The young folks never seen it like it was most just want to walk in hunt and go home. I came to the conclusion there is nothing else I can do to make it better and really I would just asoon go fishen.

Yes it may have been better days. When you walked in to the club house there was a long table that had a Gr. nite trophy and a Nite ch. trophy then 10 places for reg. and 10 places for grade and then 6 high scoring breed trophies all for just a regular UKC 3 hour hunt. Parking lot was full, had big bench show and treeing contest. Deadline would be 4 or 5am. But life goes on and things change, we will never see those days again.

While I am waiting on the rain to quit lol. Just a thought us old doggies can have a difference of opinion on things and still be friends. If you are an old doggie and you have a difference of opinion with the young folks O.M.G !! They just don’t know because they never seen the ( back in the day ) it was a lot of crappen hard long hours and work but you felt good about it afterwards. Many old doggies would still love to help but many have figured out they are not appreciated and many times laughed at behind the scenes. Wasent nobody laughing when that old man was laying in a foxhole in a foreign country away from his family so you could have the freedom to enjoy this sport.

That also was a day when professional handlers were pretty much nonexistent. It was also a day when the night hunts was a means of getting together during the off season to enjoy seeing what other folks had for hounds and how they compared to what you brought to the show. There was no internet, you had to wait for most photos to be developed unless you had a Polaroid, no video cameras,.......etc.,etc. Most people entered the dogs they hunted with in the fall and winter.

Some new technology that I enjoy now too. Some of which I'd not want to give up. I don't want to go back to the days of no tracking collars or "training" collars.

Time marches on. There's some sadness from things left behind but hopefully some of that is offset by the joy of new equipment/technology that makes it more enjoyable. Been into the hounds since 1977 and hopefully can have a few years of retirement with a body that lets me enjoy going when I want to go unencumbered by the work harness.

No matter what lies ahead they can't take what I've already had!😉

Old days are gone

I used to enjoy it back in the day. Not anymore. Used to be you drew out with some pretty good guys. Not so much anymore. The camaraderie is what I enjoyed most. And if I put a win on my hound, well that was icing on the cake. And the rest of the cast congratulated you. Not so much anymore. Think I will just keep pleasure hunting. ROB

All is not lost.

Guys I want to share with ya a recent hunt I was on. I traveled up to Michigan to the Dave Dean tribute hunt and had a good experience. I have been comp hunting the better part of 30 years now, so I'm no spring chicken but I haven't been put out to pasture just yet. I've seen the bad and enjoyed the good. On Sat. night we had a 3 dog cast and it was one of those that everyone wanted to see how it would end up. Good dogs, good men plenty of coon. We had all traveled quite a ways to attend so we were all there to go home with " all the marbles". Steve Wilson from Ms., Mike Trammel from OK. and myself. It was a nail biter and a blood and guts hunt, LoL... All 3 dogs were clicking and we had a great time. It was anyone's hunt right down to the last 30 seconds. It was one of the more memorable comp hunts I have been on in a long time because even as competitive as it could of been and was for that matter it was flat out a great time. We laughed, we joked , congratulated, complimented, picked at each other, flipped each other crap along the way. There was only one winning dog but we all walked away with smiles and the respect for each other and their hounds. So... There still can be the good hunts that we all remember and cherish. It all boils down to; The only one who controls your happiness is YOU. Good luck and happy hunting.

Your post brought back some fond memories for me, I enjoyed those hunts and the fellowship that went along with those hunts. Some mentioned the pleasure hunts after the Hunt and I liked going pleasure hunting after the Hunt was over. Good times and good memories, yes those trophies meant something back then, I still have a bunch left from back in the day. Things change that's for sure, time marches on and we all age, but we still have our memories of yesteryear and the memories we are still making. Dave

Remember them well. going to AO at Greencastle In. All the stud dogs were there. Dog owners hung around selling pups and bs'n. The crock pots were hot, plenty of food around the barns. Miss it. Another great outing was SW Treeing Walker Days at Ada OK. Getting old is not pretty

I'm older, if I wanna visit I do it at the club or go pleasure hunting. If I pay an entry, I'm going to pay attention to my dog and that's it, call them how they go right or wrong.

There's no need to complain about starring at a cell phones. It's just a different way of socializing. Things change.

The hunts are not same as even 10 years ago! But at our club in Bussey, IA we still try to make it about the fun. Usually we can be found d at the club house 4 to 5 hrs before deadline cooking and bs'n. Most times after the hunt we are still there till 3 4 sometimes 5 shooting the bull. But that is what it is about for us the friendship ships. Yes we all like to win our casts but congratulate who ever happens to win that night. If kids show up we love it if they win the cast it makes our night!!

There are two types of hunters. The one has or thinks he has a coondog and comes to the hunts to show it off. The other type is the guy that simply sees it as competition. No different than a ball game for him, he doesn't care if he has a coondog as long as he can win and he will do it however it takes to get it done. There are getting to be way more of those than the guy showing off his coondog and those guys are not normally enjoyable to be around.

So what percentage of the Gr. Nt. Ch.'s that get advertised at stud are of the for real coondog class vs. the ones whose handlers have done whatever was necessary to win even though the dog isn't reflective of the title he carries?

No one could answer that question with an honest answer. Always and I mean always judge a dog on performance and not by any title. Hunt the dog or take your chance. Any breeder that won't show their dogs in the woods should be by passed. Dave

I agree!

Sadly, my guess is there are many who are satisfied to breed their females to advertised studs based on titles and heresay knowing that it will likely make the pups more saleable. I'm sure it's possible to find some really nice hounds
that would suit me were I presently in the market. Not sure I have enough years left though to find one were I to be in pursuit of such a beast!
