fabulous five
who were the fab. 5 ? what kind of reproduction records did each of the 5 leave to impact the english breed ?
Fab 5
Someone will have to help me out but I know there was GRNTCH Wilcox Thunder Blue, GRNTCH Rockas Northridge Tazz and JOJO, JoJoe, and I think Loopy but I don’t know all of their full names. I owned a nice male out of Tazz. He was the coldest nosed English hound that I have ever had, huge bawl mouth and LOUD!!! He never could beat those fast feeder bucket dogs but he looked great in thin coon when conditions were tough. NTCH Floyd’s Tennessee Whiskey was his name had two or three wins towards GRNTCH before I sold him like an idiot.

i have a male whos out buckley creek botae and lems blue terry . botae was out of thunder tae bo x loopy . loopy had 32 pups .nc4 sc6 gs3 gr1 . i have heard that the botae dog wasnt worth killing but he did reproduce my male who im quite fond of . bet i could post a lipper thread on the walker page and it would get more views and responses .lol heck im still waiting for my english year book from 2016 when i joined united english breeders ass . at bone iowa sectional in 2016 . lol least a got a nice wall hanger for high scoring male friday night .lol if anyone from the ass. sees this they can send my book to thomas grimes po box 7 desha ark . 72527 . lol
Hounds
Sorry I wasn’t more help but it looks like I’m all you got. Lol. They tell me everybody went to Facebook. I don’t know
maybe i could go to face book to try and get my year book .lol thanks for your reply . i wonder if they will have any sectionals down south this year ? i hunted walkers for years .went back to english . got tired of looking up trees with nothing in them .lol
Thomasg
Yes Sir! I got my first English hound in 2008 and never looked back! The only reason I get out of bed in the mornings is to go to these hunts and beat as many walker dogs I can with an English. Lol!!!
Get up with Scott Jones of Bloomington IN. 812-327-1615 He owned Tazz and can probably answer your questions. May have to text him. Phone service is in and out at his house.
The fab 5 was Wilcox thunder blue, Wilcox thunder jo joe, rocka north ridge Tazz, north ridge loopy and one more gr nite called joe he was lost while hunting and never found

There was only one female and that was loopy. Jo joe was a male and nice coonhound. I raised a couple litters out of him but didn’t have much luck. Gr nite ch north ridge icky was out of joe jo and timber valley queen. Tazz I always heard good things out but never had anything out of him.

Jo joe
I raised a male off of Jo Joe and he was the best hound I've owned to date. He reproduced also. Made GRCH GRNTCH hunting and showing in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Montana. Had a huge mouth and cold nose. I hunt mt. lions, bobcat and bears also. He made seasoned biggame hounds look stupid more than once. Most of my hounds go back to the Fab 5. Many have multiple shots in their pedigree. I am a big fan of those type of hounds. So if you're keeping tabs I added a GRCH GRNTCH to Jo Joe's reproduction record.

Have always thought a lot of this line of dogs! Four of my current dogs go back to Jo Jo, three through Loopy! Currently hunting with a son of NITECH Northridge Loopy's Spike, who is out of Guido (Bingo X Jojo) and Loopy (St. Nick X Jojo)... He is a nice tree dog, accurate and one of the best track dogs I've hunted, but he can be inconsistent at times! Also hunting a two year old female that goes back to Loopy's Spike that I like a lot, this is her first season, but she has a big mouth and is also an above average track dog, when she decides to put it all together she has the potential to be a nice one! Really thinking about crossing the two at some point to keep some of this blood in my kennel!
think about this?
It's too bad more people didn't try those hounds... in my opinion more people should have tried breeding to them..
If they didn't have good reproducing numbers could it be because everyone was still on the ROOSTER band wagon?
A lot of nice dogs got overlooked because Rooster was the "go to" stud. When you have a stud of that era that reproduced over 3,000 pups its easy to forget the other nice dogs that lived in Rooster's shadow.
Now, years later its easy to look at numbers and think they weren't reproducers... but my question is this.. did they really get a fair shot when every english female seemed to make the trip to rooster?
I wish I would have bred to Blue... he was a nice nice hound.... probably one of the nicest Big Houndy dogs I watched go. Regardless of the reproducing facts.... the fab five was an awesome accomplishment by a bunch of dedicated english houndsmen.

Fab 5
I am new to hunting with English hounds. I have hunted walkers for years and have never really followed the English lines. I was just wondering what the "Fab 5" was. Why were they called that? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Dennis Steinhuaser produced a litter of 5 english pups.
All five finished into dual grand.

Chip,
Here's something to chew on. The Fab 5 were out of Nick and Jojo. The males were proven and starting to be offered at stud towards the end of Swamp Rooster's reign. If any stud was overlooked while Rooster was being promoted it was Nick he only threw 612. Rooster's grandsire is GRNTCH GRCH WILCOX THUNDER BINGO. Bingo is also Nick's Sire. Nick is an uncle to Rooster. I have in my kennel heavy concentrations of
GRNTCH NORTHRIDGE WILLY'S JOJO. I have all the big name crosses in my dogs from her but only the FAB 5 is the one people are still talking about and had an article written about them. I wish Jojo had been bred to Nick once or twice more. These are the crosses with Jojo that show up in my dogs.

I totally agree with you...
I have chewed on this for over 20 years... I owned Durango who was Rooster's half brother. They were both out of Raffle's Billie Jo who was out of Bingo... We were trying to stud him out at the same time Rooster.
You may feel that Nick was overlooked, but I watched everyone go to Rooster while my hound ended up producing 73 pups.
Yes, I know who Nick was out of.. he was the only pup in the litter and I was the SECOND person to hold him. He was born in my best friends kennel. He was born on Dec. 26. and we were all shocked that for the second litter in a row Blue Magic Gold had only 1 pup.
The first time she was bred to Bingo she only had one pup... and after waiting for several hours we loaded her up in my truck and headed to the vet.. an ultra sound revealed that Gold only had the one pup. I looked and Johnny and said, "well, your LUCKY you got one". The name stuck. ( and his favorite song happened to be , man I feel lucky tonight.)
Dennis Brought JO Jo over to my local club quite often. I hunted with her a LOT... drew her a lot... I also drew the DEETER dog several times. HE was one of my favorite dogs... nice looking and had a nice mouth.
Now I don't know exactly when Rooster was sold the last time , but I do remember him being studded out after I quit trying to stud Durango. Morris had him and ran some adds on him after Paul Taylor and Wyatt Wright.
I drew Rooster at English Days in 95 and it was after that when he became famous. Winning English Days was the beginning of the Wyatt Wright era and the end of the Paul Taylor era.
There is no doubt that JO JO and Nick crossed well.... I always told Dennis that Jo JO could be bred to a bicycle and produce a coondog. She was one of a kind. We have a video of her treeing behind the house with all the Timber Valley females... I still drive by that tree and smile.
I think the fab 5 is still talked about because it is very uncommon that every pup in a litter makes dual grand, and not because it was better than any other cross. Those pups just got into the hands of guys who worked TOGETHER to make it happen.

Hey Chip - Funny you mentioned that about ol Blue , I agree.... he was sure enuff a nice one ! Put on one heck of a clinic the night i hunted with him. Big mouth and Wow what a treedog !! Russ bred Rosie to Nick and as we left driving down the road we laughed about possibly breeding to the wrong dog LOL
Ol' Blue impressed me so much as young man i thought , one day i'll have some of that . For whatever reason I never followed through. I knew JoJo was one of the greatest reproducing females ever and i knew she had been gone too long to get anything close to her as i desired.
With the technology of Artificial breeding we have these days and with breeders like Del Hudson and Freddy Wells who take advantage of it I have once again been blessed with an opportunity of finally getting my hands on a pup not only close to Wilcox Thunder Blue but JoJo as well. She was the only blue pup in the litter . At 3 days old I KNEW she was the one I was picking.
