cut them loose
Well I have hunted this line of English since 1970 or a little before. This line of English that I hunt, are colder nosed than most lines but having said that are not as cold nosed today as the foundation dogs of the 70's that I have had to bury over the years. Over time the two hour competition hunts has made it harder and harder to maintain that extra cold nose that can still push a cold track up and get it running as was needed when the hunts were 3 hours long.
My line usually open according to track. Cold track they are bawl mouth, here and there opening on track. Medium track they are bawl & chop, usually pulling 50 to 75 yards between barks when bawling. Hot track they are chop all the way. The male dogs usually hit the tree with one to two big long locate bawls and then flip to a steady machine gun chop. Usually 100 to 120 barks per minute.
A few years back I added some Billy Blue (Junior blood over Boyds Little Joe blood) that seemed to make the females a little more chop mouthed on the ground. And this trait came off this one particular female and she was a very dominate reproducer of her likeness. Especially so with the track bark and locate of my female pups.
Back in the 70's these dogs would open 5-10-20 minutes on a cold track before other good dogs would be able to open. They don't seem to do that quite as often today as they did back then but they still open ahead of a lot of hounds on bad nights and cold tracks. Very very seldom does the 8 minutes ever get them between barks on a bad track but they do know how to shut up and drift on a bad track when they get about 2 1/2 years of age.
I still have one old Grand Night Male dog that is a great grand pup of the dogs I had in the late 70's early eighties. He is coming 12 this fall and may still be able to produce pups if you have a female worthy of breeding. I raised a litter out of him last summer and am currently training a 10 month old female out of that cross that I am really liking, but again she has more of the female traits than she does of my male dog. I do know where there is a full brother to her in Indiana that operates just like his daddy.
This line may not be for you, but I have had great success for the past 40+ years and can still compete with the best of them. Good Luck in your search.
