What Type Big Game Dogs Should The Forum Be Open To?

Let's follow our last controversial thread with another one because, we don't dodge the tough questions here...right? My question now is, what type of big game hunting would you like to see discussed on this forum?

When we started it, I guess I assumed it would be for tree game big game, basically bear, lion and bobs. Now I don't have anything against hog hunting, deer dogging or running coyotes I'm just wondering do you want to include it all here or not? I've got to believe that the UKC hounds are more popular in the tree game world. I know that some are also used on the running game but so are a wider variety of breeds including running dogs, catch dogs, terriers, etc.

Do you want to include it all here or limit to tree game and think about another forum for running dogs? Just asking.

Its not the hogs fault it cant climb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the south alot of dogs are used on bear and hogs, we have just always considered hogs big game.

They can get big and they dam sure are game!!!!

Posted by Bear on 08-02-2007 04:19 PM:

I can live with the hogs, but the deer yotes fox ect come under running dogs

I don't know... I don't run anythin but bear, bob, and coon...

But I know a few that run bear and hog. And a few that run bear and fox, or bear and coyote.... The west has lots of multi-purpose dogs.

If you wanna get technical... Fox would be acceptable, as out here Grey fox climb trees. Not what I'd call BIG game, but it takes a tougher dog to tree one than even a Cat, from what I've seen... I don't know.

I actually like hearing about Coyote running. I'd like to go sometime. I had a person wanting a pup from us to train to be ran on Yotes (but she didn't have any pups) I was all for it.

Let me add,if we are gonna let the hog dog disscussions on here it be limited to hounds.Pits and pit crosses ect have no place on a hound board.

Posted by Redwood Hounds on 08-02-2007 05:47 PM:

Yeah I agree with that... Hounds is what we all come here for... So long as it pertains to Hounds running something other than a coon let em be.

He looks pretty big to me... he's deffinately tree game!

I'm glad someone added that before I got done reading. LOL

I do consider Hogs big game , but am only interested in hounds.
If I get a chance to get to my buddies house in Oklahoma this fall , I plan on trying my dog on them.
You think bear , coon , cat , and hogs would be too much for 1 dog?
I'm gonna try it anyways. LOL

Kinds of splittting hairs aint ya? Shouldnt we promote hunting with all dogs? I just dont see where it hurts anything if someone wants to talk about catch dogs. They are usually used with hounds anyway. Just part of the hunt.

If your gonna split hairs It's a big game forum not a big game with hounds only forum.

Maybe I am but Im sure there are hoggers out there that "catch" without using pits. I could care less about pits.As far as that goes they arent a hunting breed. They were bred for fighting other dogs, were they not?

Will heck lets just add elk grizz bison and everything else bigger than a bread box.

Posted by Rockcreek on 08-02-2007 09:27 PM:

I think the big game forum should be open to all dogs that hunt big game. Why would you say one breed can't be included when in fact the dog hunts....? I think you have a personal vendetta against the pit bull breed and what it was bred for means nothing about how it is being used today. If someone trees a bear or a lion with a freaking poodle...... they should be able to share the story here and I for one would love to see the pics. Big game means big game....... and big game dogs. Take care. Mason

I agree, big game is big game. I may not like what someone else runs or what they run it with but it is not up to any of us to say they can or can't. If it doesn't interest you skip over it. I don't think that we need anymore division amongst hunting people. We should all support each other, even if it is not our cup of tea. The people that hunt other things spend just as much time as you do or should to get quality dogs.

Posted by Grub on 08-02-2007 10:35 PM:

I hate to be the one who brings it up, but bobcats are not big game. Why would you exclude lynx if you include bobcat? And what about leopards or polar bears. Even though white bears are man tracked and bayed by sled dogs it is pretty cool to watch. No one has mentioned curs. Are they in or out. I think anything you tree or bayup with anything that barks should be open for discussion. Ok maybe limit the terrier task force.

Last time I checked this was the UKC message board. UKC registers American pit bull terriers..... so? The old Bloodlines magazine(before it was Coonhound Bloodlines) used to have match reports..... find out for yourself if you don't believe me. I am all for any big game dog being talked about under the big game forum. I don't hunt Walkers, B&T's, Redbones and several breeds of curs but I still like to see pics of them under a tree and read the story, after all that is what these message boards are for. I say if someone is hunting big game with any breed they should be able to talk about it here. Take care. Mason

On the ukc site We have a coonhound section, we have a cur and fiest section. I believe this is big game, it says nothing about hounds.

Does any one know what dog was the FIRST dog to be registered under ukc ? I think a lot of folks will be surprised.

I am not trying to start nothing but if a dog hunts big game and does a good job at it why discriminate against it?

An American Pit Bull Terrier by the name of Bennett's Ring, holds UKC #1.

this is a united KENNEL club site, the forum title is UKC BIG GAME HUNTING. IT DOES NOT SAY tree game only, hounds only, game that bites back only or egocentric pansy only. therefore ALL big game hunted WITH DOGS should be fair game for discussion by ANYONE. JMO
