Help

I have a 8 month blue tick female she is not interested in a cage coon. She will find drags pretty good but when she gets to the tree she is clueless . What should I do to get her to start treeing ?

Take her on walks where theres squirrels.Started lots of pups that way.

Barking at a cage coon is not necessary to make a coondog. Some pups are overwhelmed by that hissing animal in a cage. Expose your pup to the woods and let it explore. Try a turned loose coon it didn't see go or a drag. The huge majority of pups these days will eventually have what we call the light bulb moment. It's like you flip a switch and they figure out their purpose. Yours is much to young to panic patience is key.

Stay patient and keep messing with her. The more you mess with her the more confidence she'll get. 8 months is pretty young, I wouldn't expect too much too soon. If she were mine, I'd lay off the caged coons and start taking her for walks in the woods. Start out in the daytime and work towards going at night. Sometimes all it takes is one hot track to get them going. That mean ol coon isn't as scary when they're not looking at it trying to eat them up through that cage!

At this age I would say bonding with you as the owner/handler out in the woods at night would be a better focus for your hound. Let that pup learn that when you come to get her she is going to hit the woods! While she's exploring you just set back at a distance and watch what natural traits crop out, then when that light bulb moment happens you'll be very pleased. All my mentors have told me that good dogs are born not made. They have also told me more good dogs were set back or ruined by impatience and unpractical expectations.
