One of the Nastiest Critters "Diamond" and I every Treed (Twice)
And Yea this thing Should be Concidered "Big Game"

This Story of mine ran in Full Cry but if you did'nt read it here it is..
Well, this all started one morning when I needed to make a quick 3 mile run into New Market, Va. I was getting into my truck to leave when two of my dogs ( a large Golden Retriever "Moe" and my Majestic Tree Hound "Di") begged with such sad faces to go with me, I had to load them up. We began riding down our gravel "Piney Woods Road" when I neared a corner where the previous night I had seen a coon sitting on a pile of brush to my right, I paused for just a moment there thinking I would let out my hound "Di" to check the old coon scent. As the thought went thru my mind, something shot out of the brush pile and was running straight down the road in front of me. What exactly was in front of me as I sped up wasn't clear? As "COYOTE" came slamming into my head my foot went into auto drive clean to the floor. I was getting closer to his tail with my bumper when he went to the right off the road and bounced right onto the hog wire fence along the road and then back into my path. I guess we were going about 35 mph at this time. As I came closer the second time the coyote went to the left that had hog wire fencing also. (My dogs in the truck by this time were barking and crying at this sight in front of them, besides flying from side to side in the back seat.) When the coyote hit the left side fence he stopped and began running down the road in the opposite direction behind us, this road being one lane wide forced me to stop and slam the truck into park. I jumped out, opened the rear door, and released the dogs. Not really knowing if they would give the chase, I ran with them back down the road. To my surprise my dogs caught up to the coyote and were biting at his heels and were headed for the brush pile where this whole thing started. The coyote jumped into the pile with both dogs on him. When I finally got there (after running ¼ mile) I found that the coyote had bayed up under the pile of brush. My two dogs were taking turns from both sides biting his flanks. I was in a real pickle now, my truck with my .22 was a ¼ mile back up the road, I was stuck in thought, I finally decided, I needed my gun! So up the road I ran back to truck, jumped in and backed down to the on going fight.
When I got there I found this brush pile to be 6 feet deep by 12 feet wide by 80 feet long, the road on one side and hog wire fence behind it. As I climbed into the pile I could hear the fight but not see to much of it. I finely saw the rear haunch of the coyote and had a clear shot, so three shots went into the brush, how many hits, who knows? Anyway the coyote took off down thru the pile rolling with two dogs on him with no signs of being injured. Well, I was in a pickle again! I only had three .22 rounds in the clip and they were gone. This means sticks and stones now because I'm worried about my dogs. I have never heard such growling and howling out of an animal in my life! I found a large stick and began hollering and poking at this fight trying to kill this thing before it kills my dogs. The fight had gone on for twenty minutes now and my dogs were tired, I was tired and I'm sure the coyote was tired, but he didn't show it. I began to think what a big mistake it was to start this chase. My dogs weren't going to stop fighting. This is when I remembered that my coat pocket had a small hole in it and once before I've had to go into this secret reserve ammo supply, and yes! There is two .22 s hidden there. I fished them out, got my gun and returned to the fight which at this time had turn into a stalemate with coyote and dogs against the fence and brush pile. This time I had a clear shot that finally finished this large male coyote. After checking both dogs, neither one had any bites or marks, which I couldn't believe after such a fight.

Our Pups (All) are imprinted to Coon Scent From Day One !! Fresh Coon Water is applied twice a day to the Bitches belly and nipples even when she is having the Pups. Later when the pups start teething they are given Frozen Coon Feet to chew on and Fresh Frozen Strips of Coon Hide.
Give it a try on your next litter

Mr. Morrow

Those are some wonderful looking hounds!! But, the black dog is take-your-breath away georgous. He doesn't even need to bark, just stand there and let us look at him -- However, when he does bark, I'll bet you can feel the buttons vibrating on your shirt!

Thanks for sharing,

Marc Price

Marc!

That was worded perfectly! I have been marveling at these hounds all along. I think they are just great looking and seem to love to work and play. Hope life is treating you well Marc!
Majestic tree H, I do really enjoy your pix. I may have been a bit quiet lately...been a tad under the weather...but I look at all the pix. That cartoon pic. is cool too. Is that a Fisher with "Diamond"? We got one here our greyhound tracked and thankfully did not tangle with... it's at the Tax. now, will be mos to mount but will be cool. Had to get a special tag from the state since we cannot hunt them and are not trappers. We can kill them if they go after our livestock(this one WAS killing our chickens).. so it is legal for us to kill them.. but then we have to just throw them away! We told the state it was sad to waste a beautiful thing like that and they allowed us a tag!
OK, sorry I went on a Heather babble... Been feeling so quiet it's just bursting out now!LOL... Love your houds and pix, keep posting them whenever you can!
Happy hunting! Heather

Thank You Heather

Thank You Soo much Heather for the Kind Words !!

Yep thats a Fisher !! Nasty Buggers they are !! Here in Va. their just coming in From a Stocking West Virginia had made about ten years ago, Virginia has Shoot on site on them, they just don't want them here.. That one in the pic was just a young Male.

Speaking of Grayhounds, I'am thinking of a breeding sim. of how the Org. English Coonhound was developed By Breeding My Female AKC Bloodhound to a Very Large Male Grayhound. I believe you must use sevrial Differnt Crosses before the "Ticking" comes out. But this is what we do. So why not. Their are lots of Site Hound X Bloodhound Crosses out their, Bloodhound X Very Large Triggs Running Walker, Ect. Heck I'am 48 and have lots of time to start at the at the Org. of Hound Strains

Ok Now you have me Babbling On and On..

I think my Hounds have Sucked ALL MY Brains OUT !!

Cool!

The cartoon is really cool...but I love that photo. The cartoons would work well for teeshirts I think!
Interested that you're thinking of the greyhound crosses. I'll be sure to check those out if you do it! Love to look at the Lurchers and other sitehound crosses. What atheletes! The prey drive in the racing greyhounds amazes most people. Our old guy Loves to "hunt" anything that moves. If he smells a deer or a yote he stands on his hind end(Or used to...he's sort of old and lame now)- it makes him look like an egyptian sculpture. He is 28"tall at the withers and 86lbs, I am 4'11" so when he would do this he'd be taller than me!LOL!If the prey is little he'll be nose to the ground but all eyes and ears. IF the prey goes up a tree...LOL... he is LOST! He smells it, he can hear it possibly and if he SEES it go up he'll watch it but once it's up he loses interest! He thinks our coonhounds are dumb and very noisy. He Really wanted the caged coon he saw...but if it had touched him he'd have needed a thousand staples and stitches...and gone to the emergency clinic. He IS a Dennis the Menace. I have seen some cool stuff about the crosses. Of course they will have thicker skin and hopefully a good coat, unlike the racing greys. They will have amazing preydrive, speed, size and I imagine the longevity and good health should be there as well! I think the greys are the ultimate athlete. SHould be great crosses with your houndie dudes! I imagine there are still some decent hunting greyhound lines still somewhere in the country. Those hounds would have better skin and coat if not bred for generations only for speed and drive. What amazes me the most is that the prey drive stays so strong after all these yrs of just racing generations. They are killing machines. They can and WILL kill things like pet chickens and kitties... WITH the kennel muzzles on! They find a way...so you do have to be careful. TopGun loved our indoor cats and would never harm them. A feral cat would have to run fast... unfortunately chickens are dumb... so we did lose a few when we had petsitters. Now we just never leave...LOL!
Well, I rambled again... Sorry. I've been stuck in the house for way too long. Am Stir crazy and the pix and such keep me going till I can get out in the woods. I look forward to meeting my working coonhound and following her thru the woods...till then this helps.
Have a good night, HappyHunting, Heather

Breeding the Greyhound back in...

Since I am not a Greyhound breeder, I'm on shakey turf... A much better reference would be Lori Coulson, from Canada. She has as many show, obedience and race titles on Greyhounds as anyone I know -- and, she's on this message board.

What little I know about Greyhounds:

They are an OLD breed (the only dog ref'd by breed in the Bible), and I think are in the lineage of most dogs who sport large, deep, chests, huge hearts and a strong kill sense.

If you're thinking of breeding back, I'd sure as myself "What am I going to get, that I don't have now?" and "what is it that I'm willing to sacrifice that I do have now?" When you pick up speed and a crazy kill drive, you could easily loose endurance and a cold nose. AND, sithounds are fragile -- they break.

I love all hounds, even sighthounds (the whippets who have shared my life for the last 25+ years could tell you) But, they are not scenthounds!!

thanks,
Marc Price
