Minnesota Bear Hunting

how is bear hunting in minnesota? i have a few friends that bear hunt up north and i think i might take it up with them. i was just wondering if its hard to bear hunt up there with no population, easy with plenty of population, using dogs, can still run dogs through out the season, etc... who knows, if i enjoy it enough, i might start doing that with dogs!!! thanks for all replys.

Nope ya can't use hounds here. Don't know if we will ever see it again. Sure hope so. You can bait, however there is getting to be so many baiters it can be tough unless you can get on some private land. Plenty of bear.

The reason we cant run hounds on bear has a lot I think but not sure has a lot to do with the Antis. The bobcat hunting is pretty good though. You can also run coon, fox, and coyote.

Dana,

I don't know how far from Wisconsin you are but you can run bear there. The training season opened July 1 and run thru August. I try to get up there every year and it is a blast.

Dana,
Usually there is a week or two of dead time then the harvest season opens around the middle of September.

Dana,
Of course my answer is Plotts are best but any of the breeds work if they are trained and bred for bear.

Plotts...

You might try and get ahold of Rick Anderson. He has a very nice line of Plotts. He usually has some pups and maybe a started dog for sale. He is always trying to make a better dog and has been successful. Here is his contact info:

Rick Anderson
Four County Corners Plotts
715-263-2897 (or 2879...I can't remember which)

Hope this is helpful.

Dan
