dose anyone have a picture or a web site showing the vitals of a bear and best shots and stuff....my mom drew a tag and i want to make shure she understands everything before she pulls the trigger....

be sure of the caliber of gun also , have known of several types of bullets just bouncing off the head . just like vance said put 2 rounds in its head to be sure ... happy hunting

My cousin just got bit last week by a bear after it was shot. He was going up to see if it was dead and it clamped onto his upper leg. 30 stitches later and he was back out 2 days later. The only thing that stopped the bear from puncturing his main artery was a can of snuff. You have to love the metal lids of copenhagen, lol.

The best spot all depends on the situation.

Sitting over a bait, I would not suggest a neck or head shot. You've got a good chance at blowing apart the skull and possibly not hitting a vital. The chest cavity is big target and easier to hit. Almost anything in the upper part of the chest cavity is a quick clean kill shot.

On a treed bear, I still like a chest cavity shot. Bigger target, better chance for a good shot. The neck vitals are about as big around as a pop can, if you miss that you are in for one pissed off bear. I've seen it happen numerous times. You hit it, it's over. My suggestion is a good shot to the chest and when it hits the ground, walk up and place one at the middle of the back of the neck.

On a bayed bear there are a lot of variables. How tight the dogs are to the bear, is it really chasing dogs or staying back more, etc. First and foremost, DON'T hit a dog. Second make a shot on the vitals that are clear, and then walk up to point blank range to make another finishing shot. If it get's dicey at all, shoot it in the head and end it. Don't worry about the skull. It's more important for everyone(dogs included) to walk away then to have something in the record book.

It all depends on the situation. In a bad bay up is the only time to head shoot to save your dogs. If you head shoot the bear kiss your rug good bye, because its pretty hard to fix the hide with short face hair and the skull will be ruined. Shoot the bear in the vitals, a good placed shot stops them very well and you don't destroy the trophy keepsakes of your hunt.

i killed a bear two years ago....but i never asked where the vitals were...i just assumed they were the same as a deer...we just were wondering if they were diffrent....we are just trying to update our knowlage alittle before we hit the woods....we will be sitting on a bait in the eveing and runnen hounds in the morning.......

my dad went to canada hunting bear and on the first day he all of the sudden heard breathing looked down and there he stood the bear took off on a run and my dad shot it in the back shoulder blade area and it dropped at about one hundred yards then it got up and took off lol needless to say he waited till the next day and waited for company for the search lol he wasnt going by himself lol and the next day they found it wasnt a real big bear though maybe 170

well here ya go...another big game web site helped me out with in 24 hours..... thought id pass this along



The coat on a black bear can be very puffy and make it difficult to know exactly where to aim. The vitals on a black bear sit a little higher than the vitals on a whitetail. If you are used to shooting deer be sure and pay close attention to the diagram above. If you aim in the middle of the chest cavity on a bear you should be right in the middle of the vitals. If you have never hunted bear before it would be wise to invest in a 3D bear target to get in some practice on actually shooting at a bear. Know your targets kill zone and you will have a successful hunt!
