If you are referring to Joe Maitlands ole Death Row Joe dog, he died of a twisted stomach if I remember correctly.

I spectated on a cast with him at southern days the year he won overall. He seemed to end up under a coon somewhere, I don't think he would always leave out running a coon but would get treed and stay til you got to him no matter how far he would be. Chris Snider had D.R.J first and sold him Joe. Nice dog anyone would be proud to hunt.

I always like a dog with some disability, leg gone, eye knocked out.... it makes you proud when they can still do it with the best. I tried to buy a one eyed pup and guy wouldnt sell him. He was the first to start. Just think they are special.

Joe

He was a hard going dog, liked to get by himself, an accurate hard tree dog with a good mouth. Being on three legs didn't slow him down at all. I'm pretty sure he had some Timber Jack blood and alot of Hayes Red Ace blood on back in his pedigree. Chris Snyder owned him when I hunted with him.

Wow Blacklabel, I haven't been on here for a few months. Don't even have a dog anymore, but it sure is fun to come on here and see something about an old dog I put so much time in following. I had a lot of adventures with that old mutt. Raised him from a pup. Sold him to Joe when he was 5 or 6. He was born in August of 1999. Big litter of pups. Dad was TJ and Ace, mom was nothing fancy but could tree a coon.

Joey could run and tree a coon at 10 mo. Lost him for a week and got hung in a fence by his back leg. Neighbor kids found him and took him to their place and called me. His leg was frozen solid. Doc amputated it that next morning and he was treeing coons again two months later.

I owned him for 5 or so years and sold him to Joe. Joe and Kelly Hyde were the only guys who ever believed in him enough to breed a female to him. I think all the stories scared a lot of Redbone guys away. He was trashy, but as lazy as most redbones were at the time, I didn't care. Joe would always fall off on a coon. And would tree one almost any night of the year. He was deep and lonely before it was cool. I saw that dog do some amazing things, but had a lot of nights I wanted to shoot him too. Hard headed and independent.

He's died from a twisted gut. He's buried in Joe's front yard with a set of worn out boots as his headstone. As it should be.

If I was 15 years younger, single and self employed or un-employed, I could hunt a dog like that again...lol Sorry for the novel.

Chris

Glad to see you are still around. You haven't been on here in a long time, so I was surprised when I saw your post. HAHA.
Should we try and find you something to hunt? Guy like you should have a dog. :-).

LOL. I know what you mean about liking the ones with a little kink in em. It's hard not to love the ones that don't know they shouldn't be able to do what they do.

That mating you referenced was one of the greatest "action" photos of all time. LOL. That mating produced two Nt.Ch. out of four or five pups. The female was Nt.Ch. Burkdolls Crook. Bone bred female.

Mr. Gher, sent you a PM. Hope you are well.

Tripod

I still hear Tripod treed deep sometimes on quiet nights. That was back before Garmins. He was a straight line dog. Like a rifle, you just point him in a direction and he was gone. He could hunt through a section as fast as you could drive around it. Always got treed, always had a coon. He had the nicest steadiest chop on a tree i ever heard. You could set your watch by it. I never took him out unless I was prepared for for a long or rough night.

I could tell so many crazy stories about that dog in the short time i had him. The craziest stuff happened every time out. I bred him to Crook and Reba. Kelly bred Fiddle to him and got one pup. I have a couple more breedings stored.

I had him and Pete at the same time. Man talk about a devastating combo! I think i exterminated the coon from southern Brown Co that year.

Ill never forget the time he treed a bear up in the Federal one summer bu himself when i let lay on the porch with no leash or tracker on. Logger found him treed late in the afternoon. Ill never forget that voice on my phone. "I got your dog! He got the bear! The bear got his leg! I got to book a pup off him! I got to get rid of my Plotts!!!
