crossbreed
I am curious , if you were going to cross breed your leopards ,what would you breed with. I would hope we could discuss this in a friendly manner as there is no wrong answer. I am just interested in every ones thoughts on the matter . I in no way want to cause a ruckus so if it turns into that i would hope it is deleted right away.

I would cross them with whatever I thought would improve what I was looking to improve. But before I went to another breed I would search pretty hard within the breed to find what I was looking for. I'm not planning on cross breeding right now but that would be the reason why I would do it.

Crossbreeding for me has produced dogs that are better than both parents. That for me, is the whole point........ Have the Leopards been getting better over the years? I'll be the first to admit I haven't been around long enough to know the answer to that. I do think that Jug had a dramatic effect and in my opinion improved the breed, and we all know he was a mixed up mutt. So it worked there..... And it has worked in my yard..... So why shouldn't I keep messing around with that, while at the same time working on my "purebred" breeding program too. I have nothing against anybody trying to accomplish the same thing within the breed, I've been trying to do it too! Lol!

David i understand what your saying and i guess my reply is simply we are looking for a different type dog. I am 64 years old and ran the hunts for many, many, years and just have no interest in that now. If you and others want to raise and breed that type dog ,MORE POWER TO YA. I'm not saying you shouldn't . Funny thing is you and shine are one of the ones i was thinking of as good breeder and dog . If you want to mix other hound blood into your line and i may be wrong but sounds like you want to ,that's your business. As i said i was just giving my opinion. I can always breed what i want and like ,no matter what the breed as a whole does. Again i say to each his own.

I bet if you hunted with some of my dogs in my terrain you wouldn't say we are looking for two different things.... People get all worked up when you say you are trying to breed leopards that can be competitive in the hunts. They think you will breed out the things that make Leopards... Well.... Leopards. To me the things that make the Leopards special are their natural handle, brains, accuracy, and they are just plain easy to live with. My goal as a breeder is to not loose ANY of that stuff. That stuff to me is the most important. I have to live with the dogs I keep exponentially more than I get to hunt with them. Meaning: I detest wound up, yard barking, pen running, yank you around on the leash type of dogs. Even if a dog is top notch in the woods, if they cause me aggravation in my day to day they are not gonna last long. I will sell them in a heartbeat. I HATE, HATE, HATE, dogs that have to be hunted down. Anybody who has spent any amount of time around Shine knows that he is as about as mellow of a dog as ever lived, until the sun goes down and the boots come on. Here is a picture of one of my typical hunting spots.

Now ask yourself do you wanna walk hunt through that or do you wanna cut the dog, drive a four wheeler or truck along the ridges, and drive as close as you can to every tree. I absolutely NEED a dog that will GO. I also hunt small farm groves from time to time and I don't need dogs that will just blow out of that 5 acres of trees I just dumped them in either. I have found that many of my Leopards can do both. I have also found that when I crossed leopards and hounds I got the best of both worlds. I got smart dogs that hunt super fast, deep, and hard when needed and will handle like a border collie and hunt a farm grove out like a cur dog. It's not that I am breeding for dogs that you wouldn't enjoy, it's that I am trying to breed dogs that can hunt both ways. I think that is a fairly new idea. It doesn't have to be one or the other. I have proven that much to myself. NONE of my dogs that I consider broke, need a leash ever. They can be called in from anywhere regardless if they are treeing, trailing, or just farting around. My dogs may not be the best that ever walked the earth but if they are gonna live here, they had better HANDLE.

Man i see what you mean . I've never coon hunted in that kind of place. I would sure need a four wheeler. I can see why you would need a dog that would get out and go.I agree the leopards are super, super ,smart. I have had a few real exceptional dogs over the years that could flat tree a coon ,but they were not a pleasure to hunt and were dumb as a rock. None were leopards either. That,s what i like about my Jake dog , he is a pleasure to hunt, super fast on track, solid treedog, and is super accurate. He is also the most personable dog i have ever owned.Just a real pleasure to be around. Maybe our dogs aren't so different after all. And i'm not against the Jug dog either as he is in Jakes pedigree on his dads side.lol
