This is just my opinion and that's all.
A dog has to be able to track and I dont mean boo hoo all night, and be accurate. I put track and accuracy in the same catagory.
Tree and stay tree'd. Dont need 120 a minute just a good steady chop will do.
Has to sound like a hound, loud enough to hear at a pretty good distance. Dont want no squeaking and squalking. I prefer the short bawl track that opens quick but dont want one too mouthy on the track. Will not own a silent hound. To me that goes against everything a coon hound is suppose to be. A good locate is a plus but not a deal breaker.
At some point after starting one I start looking at the want to in the hound, how much drive to go hunting and use the tools. At some point a decision has to be made to keep or cull after the singling out. If the dog does not show the drive when hunted alone and only hunts with others, well it's decision time...
Anything after that as far as color and such dont matter. Redtick, Bluetick, Black and White with ticks all looks good stretched up on the side of a tree.

No expert

But I feel brains and tracking ability are for most important. If they can run a track they will be more accurate. Like the above mentioned not no boo hooing around.. I like my pups to track way before treeing .

Well for me a dog must;

Hunt-400-800 yards-minimum

Strike on track, hot or cold

Move the track steady giving mouth- the faster the better

Tree with a chop mouth 75-120 BPM

Locate the tree without smelling the bark on the side of the tree. Locate coming in to the tree (is ideal)

Tree up on the tree or sitting just behind the dog on the wood. NO COMING TO MEET ME.

Be 75-90% accurate (counting dens neither for or against)

And sound like a hound.

Two things for me. I will not hunt a mean dog and any dog I hunt has to be 75 percent or better on having the coon. Just my opinion guys. Keep yours coming.

I guess the most important trait for me is either chop mouth tree dog or a dog that is pretty much straight at two years of age. I cannot stand a bawl mouth tree dog, or a dog that wants to run junk right when I get deep in the woods where the good coon hunting starts.

I have sold dogs because of both of these traits. And one of them went on to be a two time High Scoring English Female at the Winter Classic. LOL One mans trash is another mans treasure so to speak.

The one trait I guess would be tracking, without that all the others are mute. JMO

There's a lot of things a dog can irritate me on, and if 1 or more things are bad enough, I'll move on.

But if a dog goes hunting, I will go along with some other things to a point, that aren't ideal to me.

If a dog goes hunting I'll put up with a B grade in other areas.
