Road hunting

Does road hunting hurt how dogs hunt.

Had hounds we only rigg hunted for coon and wouldn't free cast, but they were what I would call true rig dogs. If they struck off the rig and start the track on the ground they would come back and jump back up on the box, they wouldn't go off hunting. I have a cur right now I only road hunt for coon and he does a good job and will still get out and hunt for squirrels.

I've had dogs that were road hunted a lot and wouldn't walk hunt hardly at all.......I walk hunt 99.9% of the time so they were useless to me.

I would agree with the last post, if you want to walk hunt or free cast I wouldn't road or rig a dog. I have access to large hunt clubs (thousands off acres) and big tracts of state land. Don't hunt small patch woods so rig or roading works for me.

road hunting

I like my dogs to be all around...I will rig them and I will road them...I will also free cast them...it is very easy to train if the dogs have it in them...

I think first the dogs should be natural free cast type dogs and the rest can be trained easily...

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

All of my dogs free cast hunt but we have been road hunting for the last three or four years haven't had a problem but some of the guys around here thought it would make them lazy. Most of our dogs are cur that we road hunt but they seem to range out plenty far enough to coon hunt free casting and maybe sometimes a little to far squirrel hunting.

I have seen it go both ways. If you break it up and free cast them and road hunt them you most likely won't have an issue. If they were brought up just road hunting and that is all they were used to most likely you try to free cast them and they won't have a clue what to do and what you want them to do.

I have a dog that just don't hunt out far enough for this country but she's a real nice dog so I started road huntin her and rig hunt hunt her and ill walk small patches. If you have a dog that cast good I wouldn't road hunt it

Here is my Mt Cur, took him out today, hadn't been out since 1st of Nov because of deer season going on here. Treed 5 squirrels in about 1 hour walk hunting him. Coon hunted all fall with good success. Road him for coon. Road and walk hunt him on squirrel. Now 3 1/2 years old

I road hunt my dogs at night. I have two hounds and two curs. The curs always lead on the road and seem to be the strike dogs. But the hounds will strike too. All of them will stay on the track until they either tree or loose the game. It's interesting to see how sometimes one dog will pick up a scent while the other dogs go on and then have to double back to go with the first dog. Also, the dogs seem to know which one is better or more accurate. They will wait a while to see how it works out before honoring the strike.

You can road hunt squirrels too.

This dog will also road for squirrels, when roading for coon will typically go 10-12 miles a night in front of the truck (when he gets in condition).

I limit my roading to 5 miles, if they do some running in the woods. If they do very little woods running I'll let them go 6 miles. I don't want to put too much wear and tear on their joints just running.

had a nt ch that I let a young guy hunt to train his pup they started rd hunting and when I got him back and tried hunting him he would hunt until he came to a rd. and then run the rd that was when I found out what a good tool my Alpha was just a fyi on things that could go wrong
