Ehrlichia

Who can tell me about Ehrlichia ?

I have a friend who just found out his Nt. ch male dog has this disease.
I know it is a tick borne disease, and I have googled it.

What I am wondering is if anyone has had it, dealt with it, and who can tell me how dogs react after they have recovered.

I have a 3 year old plott that got it in November. Didn't really start effecting him until later in December but I could tell something was a little off. I noticed it was harder to keep weight on him and he wasn't near as up beat as usual. Real lethargic and kept laying around the kennel and wouldn't hunt hard. Doctor diagnosed him with Erlykia gave me the high dosage of doxycline for 2 weeks and he was back to his same self. I don't notice any effects of it lingering. Back to hunting hard and treeing coons.

I had a 4 year old male get it a couple years ago. He went from a hard hunting hound that never messed with opossums to not hardly hunting and treeing a lot of opossums. I noticed he was walking stiff legged and didn't want to gain weight. I got him treated for and he acted fine physically but could never get him to stop treeing opossums.

I have a gntch bluetick female that had it. She went from the best dog I've ever put a lead on, to just a pet. Can not take the heat what so ever. She's 8 yrs old now and got the disease when she was a 4 yr old. She'll stay in my kennel the remainder of her life though.

I went over last night to see for myself how he was doing.

The Vet drained 140cc of fluid off his lungs and the next day he was wheezing and having trouble breathing again. They have him on pills twice a day.

We are hoping for the best, but in my opinion it doesn't look good.

I've had to deal with it I had a male get it and it made him go sterile till I got him treated he also had lymes disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever all at the same time he also acted like he couldn't smell and his joints hurt him I've had 3 different dogs have the erlichia biggest thing I noticed is they couldn't smell as good as normal

Had one that came down with it, ended up treating him 4 times in that many years before i got rid of it, You treat them and it only kills the active stuff, but the inactive a can lay in the blood steam for up to two years! so it is hard stuff to get rid of! The dog seemed to lose some nose and some mouth out of it, he was never the same dog! Gene P.

The outcome doesn't look very promising. I hate to see it.. when this dog is hunted up he is a tough dog... Thanks for all the insight.. I had never been exposed to this... always heard of it, but never seen first hand how it affects a dog.

I hope they can come out with a vaccine soon so people don't have to go through this.
