DNA Testing

I am wondering how the DNA testing works.. I have pure breed walker that i X-bred because he had no papers and i have a redbone walker cross. if i DNA test them does it give a percentage of what they are crossed with? Will it tell you there parents as long as the parents were registered and if so how far back?

Hi Aaron....DNA testing will only confirm parentage and only then if the two parents are also DNA profiled. That being said, it's still a good idea to get your dog DNA profiled. It's a starting point and can also be used to identify the dog as one you own should that ever be an issue.

Breed determination testing is just starting to gain some momentum. Last I knew they did not have enough samples on all of the many known breeds for it to be very accurate. I do believe someday we will see it perfected and also the ability to track inherited health issues.
